I REALLY REALLY don't care about standard at all.

Man, Todd misplayed that one turn super hard. If he'd killed the Thopter Engineer at the beginning of the combat phase, he doesn't eat an extra three damage.

Shoot the Smasher with the Axe, discard the Fall of the Titans. Discard Fiery Temper for Smasher trigger, cast it via Madness to fire off damage at the Engineer and the thopter token.

Next turn he can just draw and eat damage for a bit, then try to claw his way back into the game.

I get what he was trying to do/look at (seeing if he could nova the RW Eldrazi player down w/ a Goggled, Surged Fall of the Titans) but he was 1 card short of it.

By intro packs do you mean the intro decks that they sell? Because of so then those rarely, if ever contain any value in them.

Packs are largely hit or miss, mostly because they are not exactly designed with pulling value in mind. Best advice I can give you is if you plan to build a deck just buy the cards that you need and nothing else.

If you want to know if a deck is viable, just ask yourself about it's key cards
>Does the card work on it's own?
>Does it alter the board state
>Does it have a useful effect on cast or ETB?
>Does the card have a high CMC:power/toughness ratio?
>Does is generate value? How often does it 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 the opponent?

You'll notice that with the top decks most of the cards are good in most of the categories.

Zada sucks because none of those apply to her except the last sometimes; in which case you're already winning and it's not because of her effect.

In my second box I got Arlin as well. Neither were even in the rare slot, but the flip slot. First box I got Siguarda and Arlin in the same pack and second box Sorin was in the same pack as Arlin, so I suspect she'll have a fairly high pull rate. My friend also got a box and pulled her. I would invest in a playset. They arent seeing much interesting play right now in Standard but thats because theres a whole lot of ways to get rid of it before it flips and blue isnt particularily doing well right now. White is dominating.

Short answer: no, it's not worth it.

Long answer: playing on a severe handicap or low budget is easier to do if you have a large advantage in experience over your opponents, but if you have to ask, that doesn't apply to you. You can sleeve up 60 mountains if that gets you off, but you will only have a Standard deck by a strict technicality.

If you want casual play then get an Event Deck, Duel Deck or an Intro Pack. They have some valuable cards and are ready to play.

You don't need a bajillion random worthless cards and try to assemble something for your casual games. You get a premade deck, play with it, have fun with your friends, then trade cards with people and make your own decks while building a collection.

If you like the game enough you can jump into a cheap format ( Budget Standard, Pauper ) and play against similarily matched decks.

You can buy a Deckbuilder's Toolkit for about $15
For that you get 125 somewhat relevant cards suitable for building casual decks and 4 booster packs from recent sets.
A couple of those, an intro pack or two, a duel deck and a few boosters will give you much better bang for your $85 and give you a pretty decent pool of cards if you just want to play some Magic with your m8s. And a lot of the cards won't be complete trash if you decide to move into competitive play later.

As much as I'd like to disagree, I've found this too during solitaire magic and playtesting. Gorger doesn't come up too often so alot of the time I'm hardcasting my vamps out. I'd have a good board presence (4 vamps on turn 4, for example) which is rendered null by a board wipe.

Thing is this kind of deck used to have cards like Hardened Scales and Abzan Falconer, which pumped up your guys and made them evade in the mid-game.Without these cards I can't really see a path forward for counters being as good as some of the more obvious aggro choices in G/W. There is a human deck that is White with a bit of green in it that is floating around. It honestly just boils down to the fact that there used to be cards that rewarded you for having counters on your guys, but now the only reward is bigger guys.

In terms of your idea currently I would suggest adding in some Hangarback Walkers, Avatars of the Resolute, and Managorger Hydras. Maybe Anafenza Kin-Tree Spirit, but she doesn't work well with Avatar, so it might be clunky.
Try and have at least 23 creatures. Make Servant of the Scale and Dromoka's Command a playset, and throw in 3x of Nissa, Voice of Zendikar if this isn't too pricey. Add in a playset of Silkwrap. add two more lands, and use a playset of battlelands and the new shadowlands, but keep land count around 22. Always watching is nice for this idea, but I would honestly just recommend switching to something less focused on counters, and more focused on straight beatdown.

As a general tip for the future most cards in a deck that make up the core idea will usually be playsets or 3x. More niche cards usually go in as 1x or 2x. There are a lot of nice deckbuilding tips on the Internet that give more insight into how a deck should be built.


Some easy unincludes for me would be Explosive Vegetation, Reclaim, Might of the Masses, Weirding Wood, Veteran Warleader, Serene Steward, Odirc, War Cleric, and Makindi Aeronaut.
