This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Please do not shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means avoiding tripfag drama or discussion about subjects such as 'make a board for quests'.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/p43nAY7b
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/tgquestlist/lists/quest-master-directory (UPDATED LIST)
These are two directories containing the tweets of many current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. To get added to the second list, tweet @tgQuestList. Spamming tweets unrelated to your quest may result in its removal.

Do you aspire to becoming a fully fledged writer after ending your current Quest?

Do you aspire to become a QM someday?

My notes on the quest I'm making are 1/3 of the way done, so yes.

>Do you aspire to becoming a fully fledged writer after ending your current Quest?
Writing stories and being a QM are totally different things.
>>
>>46564529
Probably just weekends still
>>
>>46564552
How so?
>>
> QM question
I tried that once. It didn't work out. Fuck, even QM'ing I feel like E.L. James and Stephanie Mayer are better than the shit I put out.
>>
>>46564606
Story = total narrative control, you can play with a metric tonne of stuff you can't in quests 'cause you railroad harder than a Victorian on steroids, and you don't have to give a shit about your audience.

Quest = less than total narrative control, you have to play with other stuff -- that relies on audience participation, and you have to give a shit about your audience because your medium relies on them to work.
>>
how do you deal with people samefagging responses?
>>
>>46564665
This guy gets it. Being a good QM and being a good writer looks similar at first , but in reality they require different skillsets.

They are like a rouge and warrior. Sure they are both martial, and for while can pretend to be the other class, but on the long run they cannot keep up like the other would.
>>
>>46564815
And also one of them is a dirty fucking rogue.
>>
>>46564529
Just weekends, thank god.
>>
>>46564917
Fucking sucks if you're an "aspiring" QM who has no idea what the shit they're meant to do, though. You've got to wait until the weekends to ask anything.
>>
>>46564776

If it gets too bad or too obvious, just do Final Destination or something.

Any aspiring QM should have at least the patients to wait 5 days.
>>
>>46565078
That's essentially what I do. Final destination is incredibly easy to get around and if anything it just encurages more samefaging instead of discussion.

Usually, I find that if you just let the players hash it out, they will tend to come to some level of agreement eventually.

I always wanted to run Warhammer Dwarf Hold quest.

My Idea was you'd start small in a mine your clan found, rolling for minerals and then slowly build it into a mighty hold .

You'd start as the son of a thane, following your father to find more prosperous regions and it would be a civ builder type thing as well as character centric, you control the son for day to day things but anons would vote as the father for Hold matters (Until he died or is killed).

I'd throw in the occasional green skin attack for fun as well as taking the son on adventures, however if you took the son on said adventures then you no longer get to roll on Hold matters till you return, I'd roll some dice secretly while we were off to determine what happened or got done.

Memes are like animals, boards are like ecosystems. And they all play the natural selection game.

The strong thrive, and beat down the weak. They flourish, propagate, fall behind the times, and new memes wrest their places from their control.

Hot /r9k/ memes deserve to be used. They deserve to disturb the stagnation of this backwater board, and their disturbance keeps us turning toxic. Memes, and crossboard culture, are what keep us alive.

What is, in your opinion, the best rules system for quests? The best system for rolling?
>>
>>46579014
There isn't one, for either question. Use what works for your quest.
>>
>>46579096
Fair enough. A better question I suppose would be: what systems have you used for your quests, and how did they turn out?

I'm trying to start discussion, not fishing for specific answers.
>>
>>46579252
Good luck getting anything other than a vague, strictly non-helpful response. I asked a similar question yesterday about what a healthy amount of game mechanics to include, and how much people liked aspects of the game being strictly down to game-related rules or DM creative discretion, and I got "Use what works for your quest" which is super helpful because if I knew what worked for my quest why the fuck would I even ask
>>
>>46580107
The reason no one will give you a "good" answer is because we have no fucking idea what your quest needs. If it's not covered in the OP pastebin, chances are it's something you need to go with your gut feeling on. If you really hate the idea of mechanics, don't have any. If you love mechanics, go and make something civ-like. You'll probably get players no matter which you pick.
>>
>>46580200
I wasn't even asking for any specific quest. I was looking for an answer like "I used X system for Y quest, and it did or didnt work, and here's why I think why"

You know, conversation.
>>
>>46580200
So what sort of things do YOU enjoy? Have you been a part of a quest where there were just too many mechanics to remember? Do you like narrative-based combat or numbers-based combat more? Do you think major decisions coming down to dice rolls feel like sort of a let-down? Have you ever followed a quest that handle dice rolls really well, and if so, what quest was it? Have you ever been a part of a quest where there was basically no tension because the way the narrative was driven, it felt like you couldn't fail no matter what you did?

These are the sort of responses I'm looking for. I know there's no absolutes in...basically fucking anything ever but if you're not willing to at least talk about past quest experience then why the fuck does this thread even exist?

Want to try my hand at playing a quest, but..how exactly do these things work? The OP gives options, various players choose but how does the OP decide on which one? Whichever one gets the most votes? Do OPs give themselves a set time before tallying the votes?
>>
>>46581493

In the game I play, the OP gives the options, we vote on them, he choses the most voted on option or options (sometimes he combines multiple) and sometimes (for things like combat) there is a time limit.

Really, it depands on the QM running the story, there's no set standard.
>>
>>46581493
Most do "most votes in a time period wins". Some try to wait for a consensus. A few pick really stupid things like "first post ending with a 5 wins".
>>
>>46581493
Lurk the fuck more.
>>
>>46581702
S-s-sorry ;_;
>>
>>46580227
>>46580200

Personally, I always try to stick to one rule: As few mechanics as possible. If something can be done without introducing a mechanic and numbers, I'll probably do that, because on a design-level I feel that mechanics without a direct and clear purpose for existing are just holding back the quest needlessly. Most things do not need anything more complicated than rolling dice against a check scaled by difficulty, and then improvising the result based on the difference and write-ins.
>>
What quest has worst mechanics?
>>
>>46581493
Honestly, just read some quests, either ongoing ones here or on the archive. There are numerous different ways voting works. Just as long as you don't do one of the retarded "first post ending in X" or "first reply" ones, you'll do fine.

tl;dr: Lurk moar.

Which plot is more interesting to play through in a quest if you're a sort-of special forces agent? It's the first "chapter" of the quest.
>Hunt down several individuals who has proven to be a danger by the virtue of what they know and what they've done to the ones you're loyal to. Each of these individuals are connected to each other by their employer and they each carry a puzzle piece to the location of said employer who you've been tasked with either eliminating or capturing. Each kill brings you a step closer to the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. There might even be a special forces agent from another organization who's after the one you hunt for different reasons and in the end they might obtain one of the puzzle pieces as well. [Search and Destroy]
or
>Several key figures of the organization you work for has been kidnapped and is held for ransom, both for money and political gains. It's up to you to find them with the help of Intelligence agents. Each individual is protected by something different and it will take all your wit and skill to find them and and overcome them to do your job. [Search and Rescue]

I feel like I'm missing out on a lot by having not really been into Star Wars enough to appreciate the differences in clone types and mech designations, but it's been interesting. If it isn't done before this weekend's thread wraps up, I'll try and have it wrapped up with Badge and Bullet next weekend (Which I noticed in an earlier thread might be having a sequel soon? Figured I'd take a look at it before the QM starts their next quest endeavor).

The big "reveal" was basically that LOL U NOT A REAL BOY, and that to become a real boy we had to give up the only power that made us special with no recompense, so we'd literally turn into a generic mook shinigami.
>>
A direct translation of the way Dark Souls does lore to a Quest would be shit-tier though. That kind of stuff doesn't work in a Quest or indeed, any medium where the main character is not a complete mute unable to ask NPC's pertinent questions.
>>
May as well talk about my idea

Want to do a game based on the Atelier series, but it won't have anything to do with pre-existing story/characters. Story takes place in a border town after a really bad war, and you're an Alchemist that got sent by the central government to help the place get back on it's feet. It'd be more focused on "gamey" aspects, where you have to go out into the world to find synthesis materials so you can craft shit to help out the town, and in turn you'll gain influence and eventually have a say in what facilities to build, on top of expanding your own workshop. There will be a final challenge at the end of the three year timer that you need to prep for, but otherwise I want it to be a comfy time - I've been collecting books with edible plant and wildlife illustrations to make it feel more like you're actually going out and discovering cool shit
>>
>>46596355
Why not just run a "Souls-Like" quest in a setting of your own creation?

Decaying ancient kingdom because of even more ancient fuckery, humanity possibility in danger because of their origins and creation, gameplay requiring observation and attention with knights/clerics/mage/pyromancer options, description of what world you're getting into coming from scrawlings in the world or from items you find that are hints to areas or characters that help you if you assess them right, meaningfully placed items/corpses/chests etc.

I mean the mechanics of the games themselves can be applied to most well though out settings, so why not just have your own?
>>
>>46596387
Look, Dark Souls lore is hazy at best, always been. The creative imagining of the player takes huge part in it. and what people imagine changes from player to player.

Like >>46596424 says, since the Quest won't feature a mute guy it is evident players will ask about things that have never been covered in the game. I cannot not invent stuff here.
>>
>>46596418
It's even worse than that, it's that becoming a human could literally kill us. Though it is true that getting stronger seems to make us more of a sociopath
>>
>>46596424
Each of the MC's of Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls II could talk and ask questions and share their opinions and tell other characters what to do as well as acquiesce to joining covenants.

They just didn't have a voiceover, they weren't mute in a complete sense.
>>
>>46596508
True, but I've been looking forward to breathing life into certain NPC's, and I think most of the other players would too.

But you might be right, that could be the way that I could still get something similar to what I wanted without making fans butthurt.
>>
>>46596424
You could talk to other characters in Dark Souls.
>>
>>46596569
Alright true, what I mean is that the Souls style is keeping things vague and mysterious at first glance to the player themselves. This helps build atmosphere and lets you piece together what happened yourself.

Only here's the problem. Most people don't piece together what happened. They go watch a lore video on youtube instead. That is the way people want to learn. If the players in your Quest are interested in the lore then they're going to vote for interrogating the fuck out of the first NPC they can spend extended lengths of time with. Because an atmosphere is great and all but to be honest? Most people just want to know what's going on in straightforward terms.
>>
>>46596598
>breathing life into certain NPC's

Not only is that fanfiction tier.

But I'm also gonna hella judge you depending on who you're talking about.

Solaire, Siegmeyer, Lautrec, Laurentius all are super filled with life.

Maybe if you want to set it WAY in the past when Gwyn was still king nigga or something and have Havel and a still sane Seathe as characters it could be cool
>>
>>46596639
Yes, that is what they'd want.

Alright, I have an idea.

REFUSE THEM THAT LUXURY.

The other character's don't know what's going on entirely, because honestly who does? They each have contradictory tales that carry shades of their perspective and insistent interrogation just leads to them saying "That's also something I'd like to know."/"I haven't discovered yet."/"Let us search for that knowledge in jolly co-operation!" and more besides.

I mean, fucking A, that's what normal QMs/DMs do when they don't want to write text walls of lore.

So I am going to do a trapped in a large house with a group of people and people are getting murdered short quest.

Do you think /tg/ would rather try to stop the murders or commit them.

The more I think about this the more this sounds fucking awesome

>Dragon Hunting
>Hitting on Gwynevere when big poppa ain't watching
>Hitting on witches of Izalith when big momma ain't watching
>Banging firekeepers
>Havel and Seathe calling each other fuckbois
>Broing it up with Gwyns 4 knights and Sif
>Shittalking Smough
>Trying to move up the ranks so Gwyn gives you a piece of his lord soul
>Hitting on Gwyn's qtpi daughteru Gwyndolin
>Talking to the Firstborn of Gwyn before he loses the annals
>Giant Blacksmith upgrades your shit still
>>
>>46596647
>Maybe if you want to set it WAY in the past
Nope sorry, dying world is a must.

Seath would be sane, and a lot of other things would be mixed up, so meta knowledge wouldn't be so useful. Like Gwyndolin wouldn't hide behind Gwynevere's illusion. Heck, maybe Gwynevere would be alive and well.

>>46596690
I like the sound of that. I mean come on, most of the people wounding up in the game are there looking for something, and their whole motivation is that they are lost as fuck
>>
>>46596811
>>46596647
So technically everyone who was just a trashing boss, or a mini-boss would posses some semblance of intractable intelligence and personality. Looking at you Havel

What's important to include in a quest about an operator operating operatively in a war-themed quest? What should you not touch with a ten-foot long pole?

Interested, but I just woke up so I'm concerned about what time you'd be running this.

That said, a lot of the gamey aspects don't translate well to questing. Spreadsheets end badly more often than not.

My 2 cents is to never put "gather stuff" as an option. It happens, and there's no way to do more or less of it unless in extreme scenarios. Things need to regrow everyday, and one person can only do so much walking before getting sick of it.

Rather, do your rolls behind the screen and display it at the start of the thread as a kind of "allowance". If you go as far as to have different locations supply different materials, I guess you could put up whether prioritizing materials for government jobs is more important than seasonal/unique resources.

The only Atelier series I'm really familiar with is the Iris one, though, and as I recall there's not really any Mana or overtly magical stuff in the regular titles?

Jedi Knight quest, yay or nay? Which era is best for it?
>Rise of the Empire
>Old Republic
>>
>>46598312
We currently have a padawan one that seems to take place during the Old Republic, so not Rise of the Empire might be better to keep from too much overlapping, but I'm not 100% sure I'm right guessing the era.
>>
>>46598312
Yay
Depends on what kind of story you want.

Rise if you want to be a fugitive.

Old if you want to be part of the Jedi Community and interact with them on a daily basis. Also in a war.

Come on in long time players, returning players who've let slide because I suck, and new players who may or may choose not to go slogging through the archive.

I feel like the Old Republic era gives me more freedom than the Rise of the Empire since then it's either clone wars (which is pre determined and all its battles) and then you're a fugitive and it's all about running and hiding until you're inevitably hunted down by an Inquisitor or Lord Vader.

Since there's already a quest about a Jedi Padawan, I'll start the MC off as either a fresh knight or a seasoned knight.

Jedi Quests always seem to get a good bit of initial traffic

Do what you want im bound to pop in and have a flick through regardless and so will many others im sure

But they are really easy to just lose interest and sadly thats all player side with what they want from a character so nothing you can do if your unlucky
>>
>>46599235
That's Rise of the Empire era.

>>46599320
I think the main reason some Jedi Knight quests lose players is because it has more character/moral restrictions than a Sith or a Bounty Hunter for an example.
>>
>>46599630
A lot of the jedi quests in the first few threads do have a lot of people asking when they can go bad

Its odd
>>
>>46599658
That's just stupid though. If they want to be bad, go play a Sith quest. As far as I see it, Jedi Knight quests are for players who like Paladins. Lawful good.

Now if the MC is a Jedi Knight that would rather execute a Sith he just defeated who was going to do something horrible instead of sparing him and arresting him etc. that would at least be an interesting character. He's good, but he's willing to go to great lengths to bring hard and cold justice to his enemies.
>>
>>46599658
That's not how you play a Jedi quest. A Jedi wins by repeatedly resisting temptation. You get offered hundreds of easy solutions, refuse them all and earn your [Good End] as a result.

Nothing good happens to Dark Siders. Not even by accident. They're powerful, but never happy.
>>
>>46599876
>A Jedi wins by repeatedly resisting temptation.
This is the downfall of many a jedi quest though.
