I'm sorry for the obvious beginner question that probably belongs in a FAQ, but I need to have expert opinion on how dice work.
I think it's good practice to hold your dice 20/10/6/whatever up, but what exactly does it cause? My group was of the opinion that it charges up the desired result, but I myself think it's more about conditioning the die to show the number.
Or is it something else? Can it actually be detrimental? Could it drain the energy of that result, increasing the chance of other results instead?

DIce are actually not solid, but very slow, viscous liquids. Having them with the 20 side facing up has the dice slowly, slowly flow towards the bottom, making the 1 side heavier. Since the heavier side wants to end up on the bottom, it results in more crits.

Also don't forget, those same people do it because their regular lives are so sad they want to win at something, anything, and so they cheat in a game of make-believe to feel any semblance of control over their life, like it's worth living in the slightest. They're in denial.

Your group is making the assumption that by touching the die you are changing it to be a more favorable number. If they really want to know what you rolled they will just look over and see what it is. There is completely no reason to pick up and display the number.
I have a habit of straightening my dice to have the number be right side up because I find it easier then identifying a number upside down, autism or something i'm sure. I have on at least two different occasions been accused of changing the dice when they see me straightening it. So people can get really paranoid about dice touching.
It's comparable to holding your cards under the table when you play a card game, people just can't trust that you are not fucking with it to cheat.
