So, okay. You pick a troll if you want to be strong enough to just tank bullets.
What do you pick if you want to never, ever get hit?
>>
Argh, just missed last thread, astral Q:

So, astral perception: I get the living stuff = aura, nonliving/cybered=hazy, in my head it looks a bit like Predator thermal vision but trippier. Also, I get that mundane stuff in astral takes a -2 DP, but is there mundane info I could glean in astral from the physical world?

Eg if I were in an office projecting, could I read an email on paper or a trid screen, or make out the model of a commlink on a table?

Probably a shifter adept.

Here's a shell that gets 20 base dice to dodge, 25 on Full Defense.

With 17 + 5d6 initiative, for good measure.

Priorities are Attributes, Metatype, Skills, Magic, Resources.
>>
>>46429093
Depends on what you mean by "never get hit". Are you talking stats-wise, or being smart?

Obviously the best way is to not put yourself into situations where you're going to get shot at /get shot back at - invisibility spells, hacking lights and using thermo, locking areas after throwing in knockout gas grenades, mage goggles and rigger cocoons. Personally I think those ways of not getting shot are more fun and allow for more creative roleplay, but I guess pumping nuyen into bioware/cyberware/adept skills works too.
>>
>>46429379
like, dodgyness-wise.
Or dodgyness and fastness wise.
Or dodgyness and fastness and wearing camo wise.
>>
I asked last thread, but got only one response, and appeared to not be very clear.

What can happen in-setting that is at least semi-realistic to get to the point of something like I Am Legend, or various other post apocalyptic stories for a setting with a constant threat over it besides just "Random dickhead survivors, food, and water" with meat space having issues, as well as the matrix and magic all having issues that need to be worked around?

I'm not too well versed in the more weird manastorm type things, so I'm not sure what's already established and what isn't for this kind of thing.
>>
>>46429361
Is it stats in hawk form? I don't really remember how shifters work.
>>
>>46429463
that sounds like that one city where there was a bug spirit outbreak.
>>
>>46429481
Yeah, this whole Manhattan thing is buggin' me out.
>>
>>46429128

I'm doubtful. I mean, sure you can see the lines of objects because otherwise the urban sprawl would be a huge mess of nothing except for people, but it would be extremely difficult to read anything, since the text doesn't really have edges (goes double for text on screen). I'd let you try to figure out a commlink, since it's an actual physical thing. But you wouldn't be reading the model markings or anything, just trying to figure it by looking at the physical shape of it.

Unless you manifest, of course.
>>
>>46429466

At chargen, both forms have the same Attributes, but you improve those attributes separately.

I was also able to get to the same 25 dice range on full defense with a cyber/bio ware Elf. Reaction Enhancers, Wired Reflexes, and Muscle Toner plus Agile Defender can get you up there as well.
>>
>>46429361

Where does the last 1d6 in init come from?
>>
>>46429564

Some shifters (like falcons) have a base initiative of 2d6, rather than the usual metahuman 1d6.
>>
>>46429579

That's gay and not very balanced.
>>
>>46429590

Well, they're limited in other ways, like only being able to use deltaware and having lower maximums for other important stats. Like Magic.
>>
>>46429664

I still reserve the right to call them gay.
>>
>>46429466
Uhh....Chicago, I want to say. Is that the one?
>>
>>46429505
Isn't manifesting more or less just for the benefit of those on the physical plane though? Like, I project out of body to your room, recognize your aura, manifest and say "hi anon". You can see me as a ghost, but aren't I still astrally perceiving?
>>
>>46429806
I don't know dammit, stop asking so hard questions.
>>
I'm planning on playing a character with pretty heavy cyberware, including both reaction enhancers and wired reflexes. Is running them on silent the best way to easily protect myself from would-be-hackers when I want the wireless compatibility bonuses? Or should I add them into the PAN under my RCC (if that's even possible)?
>>
>>46429904

Generally, you'll want them running silent and slaved to your decker's deck, which should be the best line of defense in your group.

Alternatively, get an Internal Router and you don't have to worry about it anymore.
>>
>>46429463
Like a few people have said, Chicago/containment zone are good options. People moving back into previously lived in areas, trying to rebuild society - I like to think the reoccupation of England in 28 weeks later, but Shadowrun style.

Another option is the Australian outback. SR canon has water shortages and go-gangers that call for some Mad Max action, also the mana storms around Sydney could allow for some interesting meatspace/cyber/mana foolery on the outskirts.

I wouldn't worry about being well versed in manastorms - thing is, almost NOBODY in shadowrun universe is really. You could decide a rule-breaking force eight billion lightning bolt shoots upwards from the ground and it'd be like "yep, manastorm, sorry, lol random."

Complex Action on youtube have a recording of a playthrough of season SR5 missions set in Chicago for an inspiration point. Or for Australia, 4E's Awakened Lands has a good deal of fluff usable for 5E; someone also wrote up a custom outline for an outback campaign in Australia: http://lizardmandiaries.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/western-australia-circa-2070-runners.html

hope that kinda helps?

Depends, do you have some combat drones and/or combat training to keep gangers from pushing you around?
>>
>>46430584
Like, sorta?
I feel like a couple trolls with bats could neutralize them, and am hoping the value of doctoring and the worry about taking a gunshot or two would prevent them from making a move.

Could any of the trolls pull off being a Troll Bow, adept or otherwise?

I mean yes, I do have drones, but they're not like super GOOD drones. A couple trolls with bats could probably take them out.
>>
>>46430635
I'm just saying that if you have a troll that looks like he can pull a rating ten bow, that's going to be scarier to most than a bat.

Bat could be a ganger or an adept, but bows are pretty much just adepts and some really cybered up street sams.

oh, okay.
I am not sure if hypothetical barrens guys will be trollbowing it. If they do, I'll worry.
>>

Oh, duh. I mangled things mentally.

For some reason I got it into my head that you had drones, but had also hired some trolls and were worried about both being attacked and betrayal (because the drones wouldn't take out the trolls).
>>
>>46430759
oh, no.
I have some drones, and am worried they will be taken out by some trolls, who don't care about the gunshots they would take when destroying the drones.
>>
Hello chummers,
I recently got into a Shadowrun group, and they're running the 20th Anniversary book. I'm hoping to make a stealth/talky character to fill in the blanks of their group.

Was wondering if there's any pitfalls or useless things I should avoid, or anything that's an absolute must-have?
>>
>>46430540
Valuable enough to keep you alive and unhurt. You might become the prize of some gang wars, but hey... Life's unfair, omae.

The 'easy' way out is to declare your butcher's shop neutral ground and to treat anyone who can "pay" (read: get you medical supplies/grant you favors).
>>
>>46431078
Get yourself a sneaky stealth suit with thermal camo.
Get yourself stuff which boosts your agility and social skills.
Get yourself some minor method of getting additional initiative passes, even just some Jazz is sufficient, though you'll probably want something you can rely upon.

If you want more advice, grab Runner's Companion, there's a FANTASTIC section at the beginning which talks about the kind of stuff different roles will want.

Plus it's a damn good book.

astral projection is your meatbody going limp and you flying around as a ghost.

AR gloves, sure, but I don't think trodes work with machines.

>>46430540
There's a bit of 5e fluff (might be in Chrome Flesh, or Bullets and Bandages) about a doc with two rival gangs in her waiting room, trying to make them respect her neutrality. Being a good doctor has value, but people are going to want to co-opt you so having some decent security beyond a couple drones would be good (offer your sammy a room upstairs for reduced rent). As well, people are going to have different expectations if you do cyberware vs. emergency care. If you're never around because you're a runner, operating an emerg clinic is hard, especially if people think you're not really neutral because they came by at 3 with Jimmy, you weren't there and he bled out, but the Hellhounds dropped by at 3:30 and you saw them right away.
>>
>>46432328
Trodes and gloves would be unnecessary; since you're already jumped in to the Matrix via VR you can just do the Matrix shit in your own head. Trodes wouldn't do anything for a drone.

>>46429806
Correct. Manifestation just means that your astral form becomes visible on the material plane, allowing you to communicate or otherwise get in people's way. You are otherwise still in the astral plane, and still perceive using your astral sight.

Hey /srg/. Over the course of the last few in-game game months, our team was contracted by the same Mr. Johnson representing Renraku for three different runs. They went well, and he was pretty impressed with our work. He seemed pretty friendly with us, since for the last run he held the meet at a really upscale restaurant in the Seattle Space Needle, and covered the expenses of eating there for us.

After finishing the last run for him, he sent us a message saying that he wants to meet to discuss the potential of keeping us on retainer for long-term employment. Basically, he says that Renraku sees us a a valuable acquisition and he wants us to take jobs from him, exclusively, indefinitely. We wouldn't be getting Renraku SIN and would still basically be Shadowrunners since he specifically says Renreaku is interested in taking us on as deniable assets, but instead of having a fixer filter contracts from Mr. Johnsons for us, this particular Mr. Johnson wants to be the one directly giving us all our jobs. He's even willing to pay off our fixer for the acquisition.

Is this a good idea or a bad idea? What are the pros and cons of taking this sort of deal?

Pros:
Potentially more money?
Basically nothing.

Cons:
You don't have a fixer anymore.
You only get jobs from Renraku.
You're tied down to Renraku.
You have nowhere to go but Renraku.

There's no reason you can't have a good working relationship with this Johnson while not being exclusive. Even if you do want to take his offer, you should start negotiations from this baseline. If he really wants to convince you, he'll have to pony up a lot of scratch.

You can do far worse than Renraku for steady gigs; of all the Japanacorps, they're the best at moving in and keeping the locals relatively intact, and they have a long tradition of hiring extensively in the shadows, especially employing house runners.

That said, don't be a corporate bitch, fight the power, this deck kills fascists, etc. Unless you're really hurting for a steady paycheck, tell him you appreciate the offer and would love to continue with the current arrangement.

I'm thinking about a scenario. I love Shadowrun's setting, but I'm not too familiar with the lore. For my scenario(s), I'm using song lyrics as inspiration. Below is the lyrics of Apoptygma Berzerk's song Eclipse. Do you have any ideas if I could tie the lyrics to some specific event in the Shadowrun world/timeline? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfAoFIQnyl8

As we dwell inside the safe zones that we've made
Where nothing but earthly pleasures seems to matter
The only light we see is from the screens
No will to feel or explore the forgotten dimensions

Some day we'll catch a glimpse of eternity
As the world stands still for a moment
And I guess we will be making history
When we all join hands just to watch the sky
(For a moment)

Our selfish lives have made us all go blind
One day we'll awake by a bright light on the horizon
In one second every eye will see the same
And this blinding light will draw all our attention

Some day we'll catch a glimpse of eternity
As the world stands still for a moment
For the very first time and it's meant to be
We'll forget about ourselves and share the moment
(For a moment)

Assuming standard 5e start date of 2075, there's a few options.

Following Crash 2.0 in 2064, there were plenty of rogue military units and terrorist operating in the UCAS. The teams of shadowrunners that attacked Mt. Shasta in 2074 still had the Surtr nano-weapon, so it's still out there. The UCAS military is carrying out operations against any of these elements they can find.

In October 2074 (the Storm Front book, IIRC), Denver had a bunch of riots that threatened to turn into a multi-state war. Any soldier stationed there in the UCAS zone would have had his hands full.

And of course, the Boston Quarantine and Dragon Civil War are still options. The Quarantine is an easy excuse for why you would leave a comfortable military job and go work the shadows (either disgusted by what you saw, or considered infected and wanted by those in power), and while I'm not sure the UCAS military officially did anything in the civil war, they definitely were involved.

Confused newbie here.

I've got my first game coming up soonish. 5e. 800 Karma and 12 availability. I'm trying to pull together a decker. Possibly with a little bit of a rigger-work on the side, though not anything like a main focus. Just figured being able to tinker around with modifying this or that might come in handy.

I think I've got skills and attributes to a reasonable level, and some decent qualities but the availability of options for actual gear to buy is leaving me a bit dazed for where to start. At this point I have about 200,000 nuyen to burn and only some vague ideas about what sort of items I need to pick up other than the basics of armor, gun(probably a shotgun? I took longarms) and cyberdeck(The Renraku Tsurugi looks like good value for cost...I think.)

Anyone know any items which should immediately grab the attention of a starting decker?

the best starter decks are the little hornet and hermes chariot. either will be good enough

just, make sure you take the overclocker quality.

beyond that youll want a good commlink so you can do some stuff without ricking your brick of gold, and gear and chrome to help you do stuff besides hacking.

assuming you want to be at least decently capable in combat, your first priority is some kind of initiative enhancement. wire reflexes 1, reaction enhancers 2, and muscle replacement 2 will cost you under 100k and give you a big leg up in meatspace. you can supplement the wired reflexes with edge or combat drugs when you really need to.

if you have the money, a cerebral booster is a good deal

On the Modules front go buy a Vectored Signal Filter and a Program Carrier with Virtual Machine. Hardening Modules and their 5 boxes of Matrix Damage would be a somewhat distant 3rd.

As for programs, take at least Decrypt, Hammer, Fly on the Wall, Stealth, Exploit and all of the Common Programs. After that choose your remaining programs based on your skill distribution and how you desire to play your decker.

>One specific artifact, or more specifically, a set of them, has been a major focus recently. Current rumors put MCT in a race with Wuxing to recover components of a powerful tarot deck, thought to have been created on another metaplane and brought here through a spike during the last downcycle of magic. Cards are rumored to exist around the world, with one rumor even putting a card in the icecap within the Arctic circle. No consistent information has come out about this collection or the specific value, benefit, or location of the various cards. The wildest rumors allow a person with the entire deck to weave a person’s fate, while individual cards provide valuable divination insights or cause sudden and dramatic shifts in the possessor’s life. Mitsuhama will certainly have any cards they currently possess deep in their labs being studied by the best magical technicians in their employ.

So when will the Deck of Many Things be showing up in your campaign, /srg/?

Generally speaking, not that much. Remember that corps consider employees replaceable and have plans of how to get rid of them effectively from the day they're hired. A mid-level exec who is disgruntled would probably get noticed and have his security clearance revoked really fast if he started messing around. His best choice would probably be to hire runners and give them inside info, or to sell corporate secrets to a rival and pray it's valuable enough they'll extract him before he's made an example of. And that they won't consider him expendable after they have what he stole.
>>
>>46440139

Let me clarify, hes not betraying his own corp beyond using what he has sway over as a weapon instead of running it as a for-profit enterprise. Rival corps in the local market have crossed his line and hes suicide bombing them on a grand scale, more or less.

Hot VR or not? I'm asspulling here but in hot VR you don't feel your body cause all the sensory functions are tied up by VR. In cold VR you probably still feel your body just fine, but a bit out of focus. On the other hand any sane decker has a bio-monitor slaved to his deck at all times.

Newbie questions here!

Must technomancers purchase a lifestyle to have a higher default grid rating? (I know about the transcendent grid complex form and the hop grid action)

Is there a way to make a "car adept" that is, someone who excels at driving with use of adept powers? Or would a mystic adept be more effective?

Is there a restriction in the RAW against using a shield in tandem with unarmed attack? (I know that shields can lower your physical limit and I know about the cumulative -1 for every 2 ranks of AP over strength rating)

And finally, why is this game so amazing?

https://youtu.be/ONKi2S6YBSU
>>
>>46444644
Oh yes, also the critical strike Adept power. It upgrades unarmed to physical damage. Now, does that still apply if you do less modified DV than modified AP? Or is it always physical damage (if the player chooses?)
>>
>>46444880
Sorry, that should be 'killing hands'
>>
>>46444644
1. Yes, but you can purchase grid subscriptions separately.
2. Improved Reflexes, Increased Attribute (REA), and Adept Ability (Pilot Ground Craft) will do it.
3. Shields are an Exotic Melee Weapon so RAW you cannot use it as an Unarmed attack.
4. Because its wizard.
5. If you choose to do lethal with Killing Hands, and the Modified DV < Modified Armor Rating, then it would deal Stun.

Ares poured tons of money into advertising it, deals to get it into the hands of mercs and armies, and their name was on every bit of marketing. When it turned out to be hot garbage, Ares itself got all the splashback onto their own brand.

>>46445614
It didn't tank them economically, but it was a hit to the wallet and a huge loss of face for the corp. From Market Panic:
>Movie studio makes a bad movie, people forget about it a few weeks later. Hell, sometimes the movie is so bad that it in and of itself becomes a conversation piece or even a cultural touchstone. If a weapon manufacturer makes a gun that literally gets its users killed, that’s not something the public is bound to forget. Do you remember when the last Chrysler-Nissan recall was? That one where the Fargo’s brakes wouldn’t work? That defect that caused so many accidents that C-N ended up retiring that model outright. Well, why did people keep buying C-N Jackrabbits after that point? Because the Fargo was a less-popular model that only people who owned one really knew about. Jackrabbits, on the other hand are ubiquitous: everyone has one—or has a one of the many knockoffs. Had the recall affected Jackrabbits, C-N would’ve understood what Ares is going through now.

>Worse still is the idea that the Excalibur’s terrible reputation spilled over into everything with an Ares logo slapped on it. People became hesitant to pick up another Predator, for fear that it had been machined on the same assembly lines as the Excalibur. Others were leery of flying on AresSpace-manufactured airliners. Sales of Ares Consumer Products took a nosedive. Clients fired their Ares military advisors and hired from other concerns. Even the UCAS Armed Forces, one of Ares’s most profitable business centers, opted to let a good many of their defense contracts expire and then awarded them to other contractors. The only major subsidiary largely unaffected by consumer confidence was Knight Errant. (con't)

The tl;dr is that the gun may have been designed to fight bug spirits and was marketed as the next evolution in weaponry. In practice, dozens of shadowruns and corporate sabotage attacks were staged to prevent higher-ups from seeing progress reports, raw materials were corrupted or stolen, members of the design teams were assassinated or extracted, etc. etc. On the upside the gun technically has a 1-in-6 chance of always hitting due to the way the rules are worded. Actual rules for the gun are in 4e's campaign book Sacrificial Lamb, page 18.

So right now they've done worse than hurt the bottom line- they hurt the brand. It's so bad that they hired Horizon to pull their ass out of the fire, mainly by stripping the Ares name off of everything they make and redesigning products to be less obviously Ares Faux-Military Chic.

How many skill points do I drop into a language skill for it to count as native?
>>
>>46445770
None.
>>
>>46445815
I don't mean in that program, I mean per rules.

>>46445835
Still none. You get one native language, have to buy the others, though 4 points is good enough to cover obscure subjects, so you might pass if you don't have an accent.
>>
>>46445222
> ever splitting 10 group points 5/5, when you can go 6/4
>>
>>46445903
No it's not.
You need four hits to cover specific knowledge, not four points.

>>46445770
You only get one language at native unless you take bilingual, all over languages you need to put points into and roll like any other skill, when trying to speak a language you roll (LOG + Language Skill Ranks)
For basic things (such as "I'm hungry", "where is the bathroom" you need one hit, so the average joe with 3LOG and 1 point in a language can just buy hits for those tests and not need to roll
For complex subjects "limited interest topics" you need two, so your average Joe with 3LOG needs 5 ranks in the language to buy hits, or 3 points to get it most of the time
Intricate subjects (such as technical specifications/engineering) require three hits, so average Joe needs 9 ranks to buy hits, or 6 ranks to usually meet the threshold
Obscure subjects ("very rare knowledge") need four hits, so average Joe needs 13 ranks to buy the hits, or 9 ranks to make it "most of the time"

Basically, to be "native" you need at least a dicepool of 12 so you can buy hits on all but the most obscure shit.

>>
>>46445835
I tend to tell my players to treat a pool of 4-8 as functionally fluent. Given that Bilingual is only a 5 Karma quality, I wouldn't cost it much higher than buying up to 4 skill points or so.
>>46445860
Quick and dirty way should jut be replacing the armorcapacity values with how much they should be consuming, but I'm not sure that would last. It's on all the cyberdeck gear for some reason, probably a bug with the commlink class. Busy atm, give me a couple of hours and I'll fix it up for you.
>>
>>46446144
It's also fucking stupid because for the cost of getting a language to rank 4 (1+2+3+4 = 10 karma) you can buy the Bilingual quality, and list another language as native.
>>
>>46445736
But that's not how fucking products or companies work at all. The US Military wouldn't dump Colt because it made a trashy weapon, nor would they dump Fabrique Nationale or Heckler und Koch. All three have made atrocious weapons that were panned, all three are still massive military suppliers.

>>46445747
I don't think they understand anything, really. The geopolitics in Shadowrun 4th and 5th are all fucked up (As if they weren't enough already in the editions of old). The economy and how corporations work makes no sense (I think CGL fails to understand that the big 10 have GDPs equal to a large country). Nothing makes sense.
>>
>>46445530
>>46445611
The short of it is that they took a mothballed manatech project and attempted to use it for something else.

Numerous successful shadowruns, pre-emptive marketing, internal disputes from CEO level down - the Excalibur wasn't allowed to die quietly or rebuild into a functional product, and consumers only found out after it was in their hands. At every single stage there were people (corps, runners, etc) pushing it ahead unready, talking it up, faking performance, and ensuring bugs were never fixed properly.
>>
>>46446048
I believe that the rules state that your rank in a language acts as a limit to social skills. So if you have 6 ranks of Con and only 3 ranks in russian, you can only use 3 ranks of Con.
>>
>>46446058

>>46449735
also that, but i don't quite understand how you upgrade bioware like that.

like. IRL bone density exists. you basically stand on a micro vibrating plate that tricks your body into thinking that you're at a much higher gravity than you are.

i've actually got 12 thousand nuyen to fuck around with, but our run involves capturing a giant tasmanian devil that has data chips in it. Which, i'm honestly half tempted to just shoot with the SVD 20 times until it stops twitching.

i was kinda thinking chameleonic skin (dynamic), as my ghoul has a DV of 12 in sneaking, i'm planning on dumping all karma into that really...
>>
>>46449525
Yeah, sorry omae, but you're not going to find any good combat bioware for under 5k. Orthoskin at rating 1 is 6k to give you 1 more armor, while a rating 1 bone density aug is 5k and gives you +1Bod for resisting damage. Those are pretty much the best you can get with that limited a budget.

i really do like SVD's. especially the round 7.62x54r itself. as its an intermediary between 30-06 and .308.

i just feel that the SVD is one of the perfect weapons from the 20th century to survive into shadowrun. durable, hard hitting round, just as good as the m14, and sexy with that dirty romanian wood finish

Romanians never made SVDs to my knowledge, only PSLs. Look at where the magazine sits in relation to the trigger, that usually is a surefire way to tell them apart.

I haven't had much experience with 54R, only 53R. But I guess they're more or less the same thing.

one of the SVD clones is romanian, it had better wood work, being a deeper, richer color due to the heavy staining. the actual designation is under some weird providential one.

Also if anybody when they show up can answer my question about the culture Bio-ware would be nice.
>>
>>46451815
What's the actual question? Cultured bioware isn't a grade like alpha-delta, it's a category like headware.
>>
>>46451825
I'm trying to get ahold of Orthoskin but essence drop is .25 per rating, But...didn't it say cultured bioware drops that essence RATING?
>>
>>46451856
No, nobody said cultured bioware drops essence rating (what the heck is essence rating?)
Cultured bioware usually have relatively low essence cost because it's have to be tailored to you personally anyway. It also means there is no second-hand cultured bioware. And that's all about cultured bioware.
You want reduce essence cost of this particular 'ware - buy alphaware (or higher) version of it. It's explained somewhere in the beginning of augmentation section.
>>
>>46451856
Mm, I think you've misunderstood something here. Cultured bioware doesn't reduce or change the essence cost of your bioware, it's a specific TYPE of bioware. Assuming you're playing 5th, what you want is the 'ware grades table on page 451 or the core book. So you select the rating of Orthoskin you want (We'll call it Rating 4 for this example, so 1 Essence), then choose the grade you want to purchase it at. Alphaware increases the cost and availability, but reduces the Essence cost by 20%. So you wind up with orthoskin that costs 28,800Â¥ and costs you 0.8 Essence.
I would recommend you get the bone density augmentation instead, because AP from weapons can't reduce your toughness and you get to hit people harder.
>>
>>46451960
Well I planned on getting Orthoskin and then the dragon hide upgrade to it. Is Bone density augmentation better then Orthoskin + Dragon hide?

I'm really confused, sorry. First time doing all this.
>>
>>46452006
It's not what you'd call mechanically optimal, since the dragon hide only protects against fire damage. Handy if you wanna be the guy with the flamer though. Bone Density is slightly more Essence-costly, but has more general applicability.

If you're joining an existing group, I'd suggest asking the GM how large the other players' dicepools are for things like attack and defence. That way you've got a yardstick for how good your character needs to be.
>>
>>46452006
Get the Titanium Bone Lacing cyberware upgrade instead, unless you really want to go full bioware. It is one of the few upgrades where the cybernetic version is arguably superior.
>>
>>46452085
not the guy you are giving advice to, but I am always leery of cyberware when bioware is applicable because it's easier for purely biological things to heal naturally in most GM rulings.

Or, more specifically, I've been dicked over by bone lacing being unable to heal without a cyberdoc.
>>
>>46452079
well we are actually all new to this, We just got it earlier today.

Orthoskin (Rating 3) .75 essence drop ( 3x4)R = 3 extra armor rating for my skin + Dragon hide that gives me +2 Heat restance

Is that good good, sense it also stacks with whatever armor I'm wearing or should I go with the Titanium bone lacing cyberware/ Bone Density?

I have no issue going to like .05 essence, I'm just kinda flailing my arms here.
>>
>>46452135
Who is explicitly breaking your bone lacing, anyway?
>>
>>46452171
Lacing/Bone Density stack with Orthoskin. Get both.
>>
Okay, I've been staring at a PDF of the 4th ed rulebook for hours, and I can't make heads or tails of it.

The other players don't seem to know the system either, they just gave up and grabbed archetypes from the core book, but bugger that.

I want to be able to actually understand this game system. Is there any good explanations of how things work outside of the core book itself? (Which really isn't explaining jack shit for me).
>>
>>46452085
Arguably superior? I mean, yeah, there's still the essence issue, but if you have the essence to spare bone lacing is just better since it gives more bonuses for less nuyen.

Well, there's also the issue of cyberware being easier to detect, particularly when it is explicitly metallic, but bone density is pretty meh all things considered.
>>
>>46452171
Orthoskin & Dermal Plating are niche armour options. You can get a decent executive suit or armoured jacket and hit AV:12, +2 for a helmet/ballistic mask, and that's not going to pass 3k¥ before you get the requisite nonconductivity & chemical protection mods.

Unless your archetype is "tank", then I don't recommend it.
>>
>>46452379
Dermal plating is especially iffy since it's blatantly obvious and less effective than just going full chrome and replacing your limbs. At least orthoskin or smartskin is almost possible to detect until you're deflecting bullets with your bare hands, so it's great for a sneaky dude who can't walk around wearing any armor heavier than armored clothing. I once had a guy in my group play JC Denton by adding bioware and nanoware to a guy until he was a virtually undetectable murder machine even naked and unarmed in an area that disabled cyberware.
>>
>>46452379
you seem like you have a good head for rules.

Assume they're a primary combat role, but do not intend to take rounds like a troll would.
>>
>>46452438
>>46452379
See I plan on playing the Face, and want protection but nothing that will set off metal detectors or things like that. Hence why I was asking about the Decrease via Cultured Biowares. Our GM has been known to fuck us hard in other systems because of that.
>>
>>46452453
I would honestly look into the upper scale armored clothing from Run & Gun. Not only are some of the outfits better than Auctioneer suits in terms of armor, but they generally add benefits in social situations too. Hell, Mortimer of London even offers a greatcoat that helps with concealing weapons.
>>
>>46452368
Bone Lacing costs less (essence- and nuyen-wise), cannot be partially ignored by AP and is hard to detect. Depends on what exactly you plan to play. Hence the 'arguably' instead of 'arguably'.

>pretty meh
I disagree. It's a decent option to discreetly boost soak and turn your fists into a weapon. There are better ways to do this, but they are a lot more obvious.

>Our GM has been known to fuck us hard in other systems because of that.
He can't do anything to you for having metal bones (if you have license of course) unless either you are trying to impersonate someone who is known to not have it or he is completely retarded (which I see eerily often because people hate cyberware for some reason).
>>
>>46452601
we need a license for metal bones? Fuck me, Where does it say that?

He is a Human-purist if that makes sense, So I plan on him fucking over anybody in the long run with cyberware. Hence the organic thing
>>
>>46452444
The average gangland cowboy can wear some relatively heavy armour without it being unusual ... just don't wear an armoured jacket when you want to impress someone with how civilised you are.

Take an average of 1 hit (5 or 6 result on a d6) per 3 dice rolled. You can expect your average mook to get 2-3 hits on their attack, which is added to weapon damage. Let's go with 8 + 2 = 10; if this is less than your total armour, it's going to fill your KO (Stun) track, otherwise it's lethal (physical).

With 5 Body, AV:12 executive suit (Run & Gun) and armour accessories, you're probably close to 20 dice in damage soak, so you can expect some of that damage to go away, but not all of it. Wearing a wireless medkit underneath (req: 5 armour capacity - again, see Run & Gun) will help mop up the rest, or keep you alive when a lucky shot puts you on the ground.

I didn't go into dodging, burst/auto fire (reduce dodge pool), or armour penetration (reduce soak pool), but you can read up on those.
>>
>>46452617
You need a license for everything with an availability marked "R". Anything marked "F" means the cops will need a bribe and may take it anyway - don't let them see it.

Having legit metal items on your person can get your frisked when passing through metal detector security points (aka MAD scanners), but also allow you to pretend your combined cyber arm / SMG is just a cyber arm.
>>
>>46452617
It's a restricted gear - R in availability rating. Same with orthoskin, but it doesn't matter much for bioware unless it something obvious. Bone density isn't restricted, though.
Depending on how asshole your gm is, you may just have Fake License for restricted cyberware or he may require to buy separate license for each item.
Kill him and all his family. Call it practical application of evolution theory
>>
>>46452665
In addition to this - stay in the cover. You are not combat optimized soak/dodge monster, so your best job in this situation is probably suppressive fire (if you have full auto weapon) or using leadership to boost your teammates' rolls.
>>
>>46452705
>>46452719
Okay, I have a License for EACH of my Sins [3] and my real one [taken as a draw-back] He only said we needed one for Firearms/everything else to get R marked.

Anything else important I'm missing?

Berwick Suit -Armor 9
...How does the coat stacking armor work?
>>
>>46452588
The +3 stacks with any suit from the same manufacturer, but not the coat itself. So the 9, for a total of 12. I don't quite remember the rules for a Second Skin, but that might also help.

>>46452444
Unfortunately armor 12 seems to be roughly the limit without going full combat gear, wearing a helmet, bringing a ballistic shield, strapping on gel packs, or taking other "I'm going into a fucking warzone" precautions. Just wear an armored jacket or armored clothes and stash away a few gel packs or one of those extra armor kits for when shit hits the fan and subtlety is no longer an option.
>>
>>46452840
13. Take the forearm guards and strap them on underneath your jacket/suit.
Some DMs might let you wear a helmet AND a ballistic mask.
>>
>>46452771
>stacking
First, only armor from the same manufacturer stack. Accessories (helmet from corebook, mask, handguards, etc) stack with everything.
When it stack, you add the +value (after slash) to your armor rating. Otherwise you just use the highest value of all your armor. For example with armored clothing and armor jacket you will only use 12 for jacket. But with Berwick Suit and Argentum Coat you get 9+4=13.
Because of how encumbrance works, you usually want to use the best base armor before adding any accessories, but as face you may want berwick suit and coat for social bonus.
>>
>>46452840
Start with an Executive Suite.

Depending on your STR take a pick from: PPP Vitals, Arms and Legs kits(+1 each), vambraces (+1), a classy Ballistic Mask (+2), Snake Mesh Socks (+2) and/or a goddamn Ballistic Shield (+6).

All these extras will kinda ruin the 'harmless guy in a nice suit' effect (except for the vambraces), but all of them can be added/removed quickly when necessary.
>>
>>46452887
I got the Berwick suit/Argentum [13 Armor, GM will hate me].

How does the Social bonus help me anyway? Also with all this is it a -2 Social bonus or just a 1?

Also thanks everybody so far whoses helped me in this thread! Your all god-sends.
>>
>>46452913

>>
>>46452444
Sleeping Tiger with longcoat is 16 and it's not heavy armor, but still doesn't fit high society. Or even middle.
>>46452840
Second Skin was mentioned in missions faq, it stacks with executive suit, heritage and moonsilver.
On the other hand I heard they changed it again to make everything stack with everything, but who knows.
>>
>>46452913
13 armor is not that big, you cybersam will have more with 'ware, plus higher body.
>-2
It's +2 (+1 from suit, +1 from coat).
It's added to your dicepool on any social roll.
>>
>>46452943
>On the other hand I heard they changed it again to make everything stack with everything, but who knows.

That's what our GM did as well, with the caveat you had to pay for a re-fit for all the pieces if they came from different manufacturers, even if brand-new.
>>
>>46452974
Does that also give us a +5 concealment for hidden weapons? Or just whatever we are using, even if its under our suit/coat?
>>
>>46452913
13 armor is nothing, especially in situations where bullets are expected to start flying.
>>
>>46452913
Oh, and note, it always increases social limit, but provides dice pool bonus only when wireless, but you may don't worry about matrix much stuff for first session, probably.
>>
>>46452997
Not sure about that. Logically, pistol in your suit's pocket under coat should benefit from both.
>>
>>46452912
Snake mesh socks only work against attacks aimed at the feet, which will presumably be fairly rare in a firefight. A ballistic mask, even when it looks good, is fairly obviously a piece of armor.

So 12-13 seems to be the limit if you want to be inconspicuous.

>>46452913
13 armor is surprisingly flimsy in a fight. And given a sammy could pretty much get the same for a considerably lower price before he started stacking ware, helmets, shields and whatnot, he'll be far tougher than you anyway. But you're about as tough you're going to get while still being a dashing and non-threatening man about town.
>>
>>46453112
>Snake mesh socks only work against attacks aimed at the feet, which will presumably be fairly rare in a firefight
Potentially RAI, but RAW (IIRC, AFB) is that they're +2 armour accessories with a special rule that states another +2 gain for attacks aimed at the legs.
>>
So, I think that -21 is the best defense pool minus I can get on a single attack without edge getting involved.

And frankly, that last seven bits of penalty really needs a lot of edge to happen anyway.

Or the luck of several dozen gods.

>>
>>46454576
The only thing that still really need to be fixed right now are Technomancers. The rest is workable/easily tuned with a bit of house-/ad-hoc ruling from the GM.
>>
>>46455351

>enemy deckers
>on site instead of connected to the squad via a secure location

Most of the time when I GM the NPC deckers are working with a security commander in a secure control room or monitoring the response via the HTR APC kinda like the Lieutenant does in Aliens (just in VR).

Yeah occasionally you'll have an actual combat decker show up but in reality they are typically cybered gunners who also do support functions.
>>
>>46455422
One day, I want to take Dwarf Technomancer tank into something and brick somebody's deck by virtue of 29-33 dice of defense against their attack actions.
>>
>>46455422

The other key advantage of this method is that you can equip the NPCs with non-mobile cyber-workstation equivalents of cyberdecks so that when the PCs ice the opposition they don't net some retardedly expensive decks.
>>
>>46455557
Well, if it's a corp owned deck and the team doesn't know how to make quick and simple Faraday cages, remember that the owner can always find it on the matrix and from there do a trace icon to find the thing.

Until you manage to use a hardware kit to change the owner.
>>
>>46455623

I assume that you can always power the device off and then change the owner. The reality is that Decks are so expensive that they make looting the bodies well worth it even if you are only fencing the materials.

Vehicles, Foci and other sorts of equipment have similar problems but you rarely are going to have the PCs drive off in a Ares Mobmaster that they stole from Knight Errant.

Cost of decks are a serious meta-issue in 5e. I understand why they made decks be so expensive (to avoid the 4e everyone can be a decker issue) but it's created a weird situation where there are gamist reasons for doing something that lead to bad game results.
>>
>>46455623
>the team doesn't know how to make quick and simple Faraday cages

>he doesn't have a sheet lined with copper mesh with him at all times

Get punk, son.
>>
>>46455694
I felt that it was more of a 4e thing. Admittedly I haven't touched 2e in forever, but I seem to recall in 3e that decks were pretty expensive gear.

Other than, of course, a few budget options. (I want to say that the core had a budget option of 14k, and then everything was 80k+.)

>>46455741
Aluminum is probably cheaper.
>>
>>46455849
You'd think aluminium would be cheaper, wouldn't you? And, in modern times, it is, by a factor of about two. But you have to account for the fact that aluminium is a really valuable material for aircraft construction, and is probably used in drones and guns and damned near everything. Plus, with the ubiquity and reducing price of gold wiring, copper would be mostly phased out from the electronics industry, reducing the value of it. This means that aluminium would go up in price and copper would come down, leading to copper probably ending up cheaper.
>>
>>46455959
>This means that aluminium would go up in price and copper would come down, leading to copper probably ending up cheaper.
not other anon, but isn't electricity use the only factor limiting aluminium production? electricity is cheap as fuark in the near-dystopic future, so i would imagine aluminium is cheap as fuark too.
>>
>>46455959
I was honestly thinking a little pouch or bag with aluminum foil lining.

Definitely not the safest option, but it was what I was thinking of.
>>
>>46456056

Aluminum foil really isn't that great at blocking signal m8.

Actually most people are really clueless when it comes to faraday cages. Solid steel is better than copper mesh, etc. The other thing is that attentuation is highly dependent on the wave length of the transmission.

So you can block wireless pretty well but not other sorts of transmissions. For a security feature like an anti-theft tracking device they'd probably try to set it to transmit on a really small wave-length so that blocking the signal is minimal.
>>
>>46456052
That's a complicated one. Strictly speaking, yes, but you also have to take into demand and internal versus external material production needs, as companies will certainly sell on their surplus at a premium if they think they can get away with it. Also, if some other method for the removal of oxygen from the initial mix has been developed in the dystopian future, then electricity might be less needed. Finally, it's worth noting that even if electricity becomes cheap as fuck, the limiting factor will become mining, which will become more and more difficult as time goes on due to there being less and less aluminium in deposits close to the surface. Plus, with the whole "magic means the world is sacred" bullshit going on, mining rights will be a bitch to acquire.

>>46456056
Yeah, that'd work and be cheap as fuck. You'd probably want to give it a few layers of foil to make sure, stick some form of rivets or glue or whatever in there to keep it from slipping down, and use a full-size 70-odd litre backpack as opposed to a little pouch, but that'd definately work. Hell, my crew got a full-on crate and lined it with a few layers of the cheapest electrically conductive matrial we could find , specifically to stick the kit we wanted to rob off with in.
>>
>>46456215
Get a bag made of high-grade Universal Mirror Material and stuff whatever you just heisted into it.

You'll have to take it out to change ownership anyway, but that's enough to at least get the hell out of dodge.
>>
>Be an Edgy Human Mage

Have I made a reasoning mistake/ haven't heard of an errata/ rule change in Street Grimoire ? Because this seems way too overpowered.

>>46456244
good point about the market, i didn't think that far ahead.
with it being the future and all, has an mention been made about mining asteroids? i can't recall.

No thats exactly how it works. You get fucked by Background Counts though.

Also you've made it easy to counterspell.

You roll 7 dice to resist each attempt and they've got 2S drain to resist each time.

Don't think so, but I don't have my copy of the Sixth World Almanac with me. Maybe wherever they discuss the disaster that is the Mars base?

Sixth World Almanac, as with most things. Other than that, I can't think of anything. Maybe some stuff from the really old editions?
>>
>>46456572
i'll check out the Almanac when i have some time, thanks.
>Maybe some stuff from the really old editions?
i can't think of anything and i doubt 1st ed would have anything about outer space at all, let alone mining asteroids.
2e masterrace reporting in

i've always liked the idea of humanity's appetites outgrowing this planet and wish SR would embrace the idea in a some new and different ways besides SURGE and CFD.
>>
Space Shit really didn't show up until the Comet book in 2e.

Back in the day the intention was to basically have Mages die when they left the manasphere.

This why people like Mina Graff-Beloit were safe on orbital stations because there was no way for a dragon like Lofwyr to actually go off planet or cast ritual magic on them.

wouldn't the big L just need a ritual (or even a sympathetic) link to Mina to cast the spells'o'doom?

If you've got good die pools to resist addiction, also take a look at some of those CF custom drugs.
>>
>>46456823
Not his style.

He plundered her hoard anyway, and when she tried to get at hiw with a bunch of runners, Golden Snout just laughed. Then he ate the runners. Then he laughed again.

It was good enough of a joke he let her slip of the hook just once.
>>
>>46456823

Without a manasphere there is no way for magic to manifest.

At least that was the intention in 1e-2e when I went to convention and people like Tom Dowd were talking.

Catalyst obviously likes the space shit so most of the weird manasphere stuff has been discontinued.

god damn; dragons really are on another level from metahumanity. makes me really wonder what the horrors they were hiding from were all about.

some of the best SR material i've read had his name on the cover.

Look at Earthdawn stuff for some info.

Alternatively, look at a blood nation in Dominions.

Anyone have any good advice for GM's running Shadowrun?

The way I see it so far is that I should probably always have pertinent host information on a 3x5 card, a fully fleshed out map on graph paper with a plastic sheet overlay for devices slaved to the hosts WAN and direct jack points, skeleton stat blocks that can be given to NPC's on the fly and encounter stat blocks all on the mighty 3x5 card. A good city map for the players to place markers (Seattle in this case) and a bookmarked core rulebook. Anything else that could be useful?
>>
>>46457366
>Anything else that could be useful?
it sounds like you have the right idea so far. do you know what characters your players are running yet? no need to spend hours on the matrix when your group is 2 street sams and an acoustic guitar playing adept.
>>
>>46457366
A spreadsheet to keep track of everything in combat.

Yeah, I got a technomancer, a hermetic mage, a rigger and a brawling adept.
>>
>>46457476
Please let your Technomancer set up a PAN.

Yes, thank you! As someone who prioritizes and collates data with these for a living, I appreciate its simplicity and functionality.
>>
Rate my concept:

Race: Skeleton
Class: Druid
Backstory: A young lumberjack, blasphemous and rude, stumbled into a sacred moonwell and pissed into it. A single vine shifted to tripe him, and, inebriated as he was, he drowned in it. He was resurrected by the spirits of the grove to serve as it's warden as punishment for his evils. He is now just called The Warden, and he specializes in druidic healing spells(that he cant benefit from, thematically)
>>
>>46457493
Also optionally give them skinlink at gamestart.
>>
>>46457493
B.B.But the rules! The Rigger is willing to slave devices under his RCC PAN, he's got a good one.
>>
>>46457476
that's essentially 4 different rulebooks you'll need to have covered. it'll be crunchtastic but with tabletop props you can make it work.

them grove spirits gave you a second chance, best you make the most of it, eh?
>>
>>46457534
I've found that despite this, there are striking similarities between similar functions with a few exceptions, for example how one calculates "fading" or drain for technomancers compiling sprites and shamans summoning spirits. The function of an RCC versus a Cyberdeck, I find that the differences are tangible enough to help me remember the subsets of rules about them.

I'm also using the Hayek sheets for dice pool actions, and these will help both myself and my players.
>>
>>46457520
there's other reasons why a Techno would set up a PAN and the Rigger and the Techno won't always be together.
>>
>>46457502
No problem anon.
I made it because fucking combat is really slow without all the numbers right in front of you, so I made a bigol spreadsheet for most things in combat.
>>
>>46457688
What has your experience taught you in this manner? I'm curious.
