I've always wondered how the fuck can a person see through those small slits.
>>46415896
>>46415910
You have a better view then you think, but it does restrict vision quite a bit.
You could use a helmet like this, and infantry more often used such designs.
>>46415910
usually with their eyes.
>>46415910
Usually helmets with very restricted vision didn't have the visor down when in melee. It's more for protecting against arrows AFAIK.
>>46415910
Have you never worn shutter shades or something?
Like nigga just take two seconds to hold a couple fingers up close to your face
Then take another two seconds to put "helmet eye slits" into a search engine or something
Fuck it I'll even do that for you:

Aside from has already been said, an important thing to bear in mind is the difference between original helmets meant for combat and reproductions.
An awful lot of the myths about the restrictions and clumsiness of armour are based on taking crappy knock-offs and treating them as representative of the originals.
Anybody can order an ill-fitting breastplate or helmet made in India from recycled cars and then make a youtube video proving how you can't see anything in a greathelm or whatever. Most reproduction armour, whether it is marketed towards LARPers or 19thC museums or collectors is not made by people who understand how historical armour functions or who closely replicate the design of the originals they pretend to ape. Bashford Dean has a hell of a lot to answer for.
The helmet in the picture is a dodgy reconstruction of a spangenhelm made in the 1920s. Pretty much any spagenhelm copy you will see today ultimately takes it's cue from this one guys interpretation of what a viking helmet might have looked like. We've now got good reason to believe this is wide-off the mark but I don't see the popular image of what these helmets look like shifting anytime soon.
With some notable exceptions; historical armours tended to work and if there is critical flaw in the preformance of your reconstruction then it might be an idea to check that if the issue is on your end before deciding that knights were drooling morons who had to be winched onto their horses.

>>46421195
yeah it was shit. I've got a new helmet since then, and did a few "tests" on the old one. That is, we put it on a concrete column and hit it with blunt swords.
>>46419862
HA xD good one. Read a book and get gud. That is far from truth, there bud.
>>46415859
>>46422011
what was this used for, historically? Actually curious.
>>46422753
It's later period tournament armor/footmen armor. It actually provides a very very good field of vision as the tiny scattered breathes function like a fencing visor. Only fault in it is that all the breathes reduce structural integrity.
>>46422827
Cool, thanks!
>>46418251
That looks like a repurposed welding mask. I like it!
I kind of have a massive obscured face fetish so this is relevant to my interests.

Try Japan, gaijin-san.
Everyone packed like sardines in busses and trains in flu season made surgical masks popular and even expected, which opened the floodgates for allergy masks and fashion masks

Given how easy it is to stab someone's face I doubt this is true.
It's not even too hard to get a sword through some of the larger eye slots.
At a certain point you're reasonably invulnerable in full gothic or a few prcursors so vision isn't as fully important as not having an open spot to aim easily at.
My bacinet for reenactnent is like pic related. Vision is still surprisingly good against guy your fighting but not as great in periferals. But that's what your buddies are for in a line fight.
>>46424364
When you charge forward with a spear/lance or whatever you lean forward. So you want your vision area to favour upwards a little so you can see other cav.
Look at a frog mouth helm for another example. Granted it is a tournament piece so you'd not need to worry about ground guys.
But also I don't see many cav charges happening during gas attacks so maybe this one was just ill fitting for still fighting in.
