>Marcus McMahon
Born to a family of stewards in Whiterun, Marcus was truly a man of the North.
He learned horse riding in his childhood and developed quite a name for himself. His then small stature and the blind dare of youth made him the swiftest of couriers.
One day, he was ambushed on the road to Blacklight. Filthy Dark Elves were as violent as always. But Marcus did not yield. He smacked them down with raw power, crushed them under his elbow for the people of Skyrim.

His name would live on for ages to come, resounding in the halls of Arenas all across Tamriel.

Can someone pls explain some of the lore regarding magic in the ES universe.

I only get the fact that its source is either the remains of the Aedra or starlight/sunlight.

Also someone explain how geomancy (earth magic) spells work in the setting.
>>
>>46390693
Magic comes from Aetherius, the realm of magic. Mundus only has access to magic due to the sun and the stars, which are holes in the firmament of oblivion torn by Magnus and the Magna Ge when they escaped from Mundus. Lorkhan tricked/convinced the Aedra to give up themselves into Mundus to create Nirn and the laws of physicality. Magnus and his kin were on board with this, and then changed their minds. The violence of their escape created the holes and allowed magic to be available to the inhabitants of Nirn. It permeates everything since it simply saturates the air in the form of light.

Geomancy? Going by lore and not gameplay restrictions: Just craft a spell that affects the earth, probably gonna use elements of alteration and destruction.
>>
>>46390693
Okay so when aedra said fuck this and left, it tore open the holes in reality you see as stars/sun (they're more like balls instead of circular holes except not really but whatever).
This causes leakage of Creatia, the raw power of creation and that stuff, which is transformed into magicka as it passes through.

Of course, souls also have stars in them but that's not really relevant.

Geomancy? That... is not a thing, as in there's nothing called geomancy as far as I remember.
They'd probably fall under alteration or destruction, depending on if you're using shit to make something/just change it, or throwing rock spears or something at people, I dunno.

Mysticism is the only true school of magic
>>
>>46390781
Goddamn Psjiic asshole, go back to being obscure and take your functionless magic with you and shove it where the the dwemer went.
>>
>>46390759
>>46390781

So Earth-magic is mainly Alteration magic with Destruction magic used to create the material for the spell if it's unavailable like in the air or on high seas but is so far not present in any of the games.

The schools of magic is a division to simplify magic disciplines to make the easier to learn.
All in all they aren't separate as a mage-light spell for example is both Alteration and Illusion and Healing Wind is only Restoration+Alteration.

Think Anthropology and its sub-divisions IRL.

Anthropology encompasses: Archaeology, History, Literature, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy etc.
>>

>All in all they aren't separate as a mage-light spell for example is both Alteration and Illusion

Alteration actually makes a glowing floating lightbulg, Illusion gives you the illusion that there's a glowing floating lightbulg.

Mushrooms have a high moisture content genius. Most of them are 70-90% water. For someone with +5, you don't seem to be doing much with it. Maybe you should stop wandering around pretending to be a hero because you can beat up some drunks and get a real job, you glorified murderhobo.
>>
Do you guys like the Renrijra Krin? I wish they'd get a little more attention in the games.

>>46392600
The problem is that a lot of other games have re-established it, which are easier to get access to and thus most people don't know the lore was there in Daggerfall, and that several ideas - like the Sage - were never brought up again.

When most people think of the Alik'r, they don't think of the Daggerfall book describing a traveller going there. They probably think of ESO, and it's blurb about the Alik'r with the poem that the Daggerfall story was supposedly inspired by.
>>
>>46392752
+5 what? If you're referring to intelligence, it's +10.
Also, lava don't care about moisture content.
I'll stop adventuring and questing when Dunmer women close their legs and bandits stop existing.
>>
>>46392847
+5 to Alchemy. Sorry, I was too busy raiding your coast for new slaves to notice.
>>
>>46392787
It seems like the Renrijra might be a bit of an artifact considering that their manifesto hasn't been updated in 200 years, and still describes the Elsweyr Confederacy as being a vassal state of the Empire. Still, if they were to pop up as a rebel sect encouraging a return to traditional Khajiit practices rather than joining the Dominion's Aldmeri-centric culture, maybe like the Restless League or a more radical version of the Stormcloaks, I'd love to see it.
>>

Yeah, pal. Just remember, if you hit a frozen guy, you sailed too far North.

Arquebuses in Elder Scrolls when?

A plot about the mages being butthurt over rulers replacing expensive battlemages with peasants with firearms could be fun.

I admit I just want more Arcanum ;_;
>>
>>46393453
Well, the point kinda was that I wasn't old enough to understand it either. When you read Sermons as teenager you only see them as religious mumbo jumbo and sex jokes, so you won't figure out why Dunmer are indeed the best race until you grow up.

One quest in Skyrim had ships that bombards you with cannons, so cannons are kinda confirmed to exist. Not to mention few references to them even before Skyrim.

I also keep hearing rumors that Redguard had cannons and even flintlocks in it, but too bad the game itself is extremely rare and seemingly unplayable on any modern system, so it's hard to check. Given that it's pirate themed I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.
>>
>>46393505
Cannons exist, presumably handgonnes aren't out of the realm of possibility. They're just not that useful. Though I could see a person enchanting a staff to shoot fireballs and it be in a more ergonomic form than a wizard staff.

That'd be fine.

In Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity, half the reason muskets were used was that they could easily penetrate the otherwise impenetrable magical shields of mages. It was a cool twist on the firearms-in-fantasy trope.

What are you, gay? But seriously, they aren't bad, even if they're a little generic if you take them outside of their woods.
>>
>>46393612
I can understand it in context of 4th era when magic and technology in general have devolved, but I find it extremely odd why they didn't make magical equivalent of guns in third era Morrowind which had extremely advanced culture. I mean soul-powered fire or shockball "rifles" would make good infantry weapon and in case of third era Morrowind very easy to mass produce.

Then again I guess that's what all those halberds with ranged damage really are. It's just that the magic system in game sadly does them no justice.
>>
>>46393700
Not to mention that Nord lore in Morrowind gives you completely different picture what Skyrim is like. It's not generic viking land, but a land of naked elemental nords who exist in symbiosis with cold and snow.
>>
>>46393338
Not liking the race with the hottest chicks and man eaters.

Jokes and the stealth-archer meme aside Bosmer are a pretty cool race.

Funny enough that a race famous for archery produced some pretty buff swordmasters.

I want to see their shape-shifting aspect played up in the future allowing them some shapeshifting magic to some degree something like Alter Self in DnD or wild-shape once per day.

>>

But in the lore, it seems to be harder to learn for the average person. Remember that one book about water breathing, where a guy had to take months to learn how to breathe underwater? And Mystiscim has always been described as the hardest school of magic which is probably why they got rid of it goddamn it wasn't a great school but now all the spells are mixed into other schools

So in the lore, it can be powerful because not many people actually use it. But in games, it's a lot more balanced out.

How can an arrow pierce Ebony or Dragon Bone armour?
>>
>>46393891
It's actually so broken I often wonder how the world hasn't been destroyed in magical equivalent of nuclear apocalypse. There are several books like Feyfolken that seriously imply enchanting and magic are in reality limitless. In Feyfolken they directly say that one could technically create a sword that would cleave the world in half.
>>
>>46393934
The world isn't destroyed because they
-learn their lesson after destroying a chunk of the world
-fix the world with magic
-blow themselves up and lose that knowledge for a while
>>
>>46393934
For similar reasons IRL hasn't been nuclear apocalypsed yet. The mages have the power to do something, but they also don't have the will/idiocy to actually use it.

>I have a spell that can set your entire city on fire!
>Yeah? Well I have a sword that can cut the world in half
>but are you gonna use it?
>Are you gonna see if I will?
>>
>>46393987
Well, look what happened to Yokuda, but I guess you can't count it because technically pankratosword is not magic at all. It's just a sword technique causing nuclear explosion.

>>
>>46393934
It's limitless, but there are a lot of rules in place, and it's hard for anyone to learn how to use that kind of power. You technically could create a sword that would cleave the world in half, but that would take an amazing amount of effort and knowledge.

A comedy about a Dark elf rogue who sets up a priest of Julianos and a priest of Akatosh to scam them out of their money.
They catch him but he still convinces them to go on together.
Gets them to kidnap a chick of the streets to gang-bang her while he buggers of with the money.
Then HE gets coerced by a Breton chick noble who was a cousin of the kidnapped chick and pulled the strings behind the scenes.
They rob some Dwemer, hide in a giants carcass and then the Breton chick continues to rape the Dark elf because they got them selves a belt of endurance.
Meanwhile authorities found the whorehouse run by the two priestly factions along with the two priests who were drugged up and chopped the girl to pieces.

>>46395027
Fireballs's required skill level depends on the game. Still, creating a ball of fire and using it as a projectile is something even an amateur mage can do, except in Skyrim.
>>
>>46395124

>>46395230

>>
>>46395230
Satirical would be more accurate. How much is dramatized and exaggerated is a bit up in the air, considering a few of the holy order missions play out more like mob hits.
>>
>>46395210
In Skyrim, everybody and their mother can make a gout of flame spring from their hands like a flamethrower.
Oblivion, everybody can cast fireball, and it doesn't take much magicka, and since magicka recharges fast, that doesn't matter.
Morrowind, people with training can cast a fire touch spell that can take a good chunk of health without too much magicka, but you need to be conservative unless you can sleep, get potions, or are an Atronach who can absorb.
>>
>>46395290
Don't forget that a touch spell wouldn't be something you could blast someone with from afar - and most mages aren't exactly trained for close combat.

Though generally, I'm not surprised at the idea of magic being fairly OP. TES did come from D&D, after all.
>>
>>46395329
High fantasy magic in general tends to be OP.
Linear warriors, and quadratic mages is the general principal that games go on.
>>
>>46395290
Morrowind magic was kinda underwhelming and the series has pretty weak magic in general till you start abusing it's potential, I only used it to summon daggers, longswords and bows.

Seeing Fallout 4's gunplay gives my some hope that magic will be better... somehow.
>>
>>46395403
See
>>46395369
Linear warrior, quadratic mages.
Warriors start out well, and are a steady, reliable class.
Mages start out weak, with few spells to cast and little health. Around the point when you get more spells and level up, getting more effects, more magicka, higher chance to cast, mages become godlike, and able to do anything.
That being said, the only reason not to have Mysticism as a major skill is if you want to start out with as many spells as you can and already have a bonus.
>>
>>46395403
Why summon weapons when they're easy to carry? I'd rather be able to pull a weapon out whenever I needed it, not worry if my Dagger is going to work or not.
>>
>>46395254
Maybe, but it's primarily just a bawdy play and a caricature. There's truth in the fact that the Temples of High Rock are political institutions as much as they're religious, but I wouldn't take it to heart any more than that. If you look at the actual quests, they're far more tame.
>"As a saving grace, this series of vignettes contains gratuitous references to all pleasures of the flesh."

>>46395289
Excluding for a moment the quests unique to certain temples, there's sixteen temple quests. Most of the quest are about healing, errands, meeting up with scholars, or purging undead/daedra/orcs. There's as far as I know no generic quest that act like mob hits.

I'm not saying that the Temples aren't political and depraved in some way, but that play is going to lengths that are totally unsupported by most other sources. I wouldn't think too much of it.
>>
>>46395536
I do distinctly remember one for the Akatosh Chantey that involved investigating and eventually killing a man claiming to be a prophet. Although, I'm not using a restored/expanded content build,so that might just be a result of the modifications made.

Never mind that it's blown out of proportion.

It's just made as a parody anyway.

And a good one at that.

Seems like it was written on a campaign where the DM and players got drunk.
>>
>>46395484
I'm pretty sure warriors upscale as well when smithing & enchanting are taken into account, plus archery, sneaking and poisons.

I also dislike using potions and magic seems to rely on chugging magicka potions. It's especially annoying when I look up stats and see that in Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim all the hostile mages have *twice* as much magicka as the player can have at that level. The bandit mages in the cave near Seyda Neen at the start of Morrowind have 100 magicka with no racial bonus, for example. I want that magicka!. It would certainly help with me not ditch magic at the start since you don't start off with enough to kill two bandits.

>>46395507
Conjuration levels up quickly so I just practiced casting it for a while. Summoned daggers in Morrowind were full powered daedric daggers with a +10 short blade, very useful, even more so once I find someone that can teach the other bound weapon spells.
>>
>>46395573
It's much rather about how you remember or understood the quest, I think.
What you're talking about is a generic quest known as "The Heretic".

The quests starts with either opening:
>(Temple's deity) be with you, (Brother/Sister). You may have heard of (prophet's name). If you have not yet, you will. We are investigating (his/her) claims that (he/she) is a prophet. We are not, I think, censorious by nature, but we must ever be alert to the presence of heretical influences. Would you be available to assist in this important investigation?
Or:
>It falls upon us to investigate the claims of (prophet's name) that (he/she) has seen the face and heard the words of (Temple's deity). Perhaps you have time to assist in this inquiry?

So this doesn't even remotely start out as a hit job, it's just a investigation of a possible prophet.

Basically, the prophet claims to have witnessed a miracle in a dungeon, and is now also claiming to hear the words of his deity in their head. Now he has written a religious text. The temple says "Interesting, but let us actually investigate that". So the temple sends some guy to investigate the site of the miracle, while you get sent to the prophet's hometown to figure out more info about him. You can also travel to the dungeon to talk with the priest conducting the investigation of the miracle. When you get to the hometown of the prophet and meet a temple cleric, you hear about a former lover, who you visit.
>>
>>46395918
If you have a good relation with the lover's faction, she'll show you a letter the prophet sent her showing how he's a fake. You can end the quest by showing this letter to your temple, or go on your own to confront the prophet. If you meet up with the prophet and give him the letter, he'll freak out and command a warrior to attack you while he flees with the letter.

Now, if the prophet fled, you'll eventually get a letter that the cleric you met in the prophet's hometown has been killed with a religious item. If you meet his successor, get the item, and show it to the prophet's former lover, she'll confirm that it's his item and that the prophet killed one of your temple's clerics. The prophet will also confirm that it's his item. Anyway, the dude sent to investigate the miracle goes missing if you haven't already finished the quest, and you'll find his severed finger, and I believe it's implied that the prophet killed him (been a while since I did this quest, and UESP doesn't have the full dialogue for showing the prophet the severed finger).

Anyway, the prophet is false, can be a murderer, and the temple acts remarkably open about the whole thing.
>>
>>46395843
That depends on the game. In Skyrim, all classes are quadratic.

Also
>The mage in the cave near Seyda Neen.
All of my rage. At least I got some cool travel robes from him.
Either way, just play a Breton or an Altmer, and be born under the Mage or the Atronach. Absorb/damage magicka or intelligence, silence, and sound are fun effects to use, and early on you can dispatch enemies with relative ease by summoning an Ancestor Ghost and using a cheap ranged spell to avoid being the target. Really it's the reason summoning exists.
>>
>>46395843
>ll the hostile mages have *twice* as much magicka as the player can have at that level
That's because AI is retarded, especially in using magic. Without more MP they wouldn't even stand a chance.
>>
>>46396058
This gets apparent in all the games when you give enemies an actually AI package.

I installed ''Revenge of the Enemies'' and can only say one thing to the mod author and that is ''Fuck you for not adjusting the mana capacity of the casters!''
>>
>>46396058
Okay, but there's usually more than 1 enemy, they don't need twice as much magicka when they have multiple mages.

That's something I like about TES - it's obvious most of the series was planned ahead to some degree, and it takes pride not only in looking back, but hinting at the future, which is great for going back to older games.

But something that frustrates me is how long it takes to learn some things. We had to wait until Skyrim to get some serious info on what happened in Vvardenfell after we left, aside from some brief references to Saint Jiub. And we had to wait until the Dragonborn DLC to see Jiub again, and learn that the severed head we could find in Kvatch was that of Jiub himself. After Oblivion, we get no idea what the hell happened to the Illiac Bay. Is High Rock still all together, or did they split into warring factions because of the war with the Thalmor, the Oblivion Crisis, or general strife? And Skyrim and its Companions instead of the Figher's Guild and its relatively isolated Mages College meant that we didn't get to hear what happened to other Imperial organizations.

You can become a immortal, flying demigod with infinite magic, and at that point combat magic is the best way to fight. Magic is just generally way better than anything else.

>>46403766
You cannot change the controls, which is painful. Once you get a proper configuration up, Daggerfall doesn't bother me one bit (except for the fact that I can't turn while jumping/falling), but Arena is almost aggressively bad in this regard.

To be fair, it was like 5AM when I did that one, so I may have been a bit unable to focus at the time.

Daggerfall dungeons are very labyrinth like going up and down. It's not THAT hard to navigate with Recall, and or marking the map, but Arena's dungeons are....flat, if that makes sense.
>>
>>46403960
I went back and reread my posts about it, and I apparently found it really easy. I dunno, our characters might just have been at different levels and of different types.

It's honestly usually better than the total fucking bullshit Daggerfall can pull.

Sorry, I thought you said that you liked Arena's CONTROLS. It's 4AM here.
I totally agree about the dungeons, and I actually really liked a lot of Arena's dungeons.

Dem abs.

But seriously, is this a bug? Or was it a really special torc?

I do kind of miss the variety that weapons and items had in games before Morrowind. Most wore useless aside from things to sell, but it helped the world feel surprisingly real in some ways.

Oh, I love that, it gives me a hard on. Bet made some great fucking design decisions with their DF dungeons.

I swear, I have mental scarring from my first proper Daggerfall dungeon. I spent about a week there, and I'm not talking about a in-game week, and I still never found what I was looking for. I still avoid dungeons whenever I can.

In Arena, generic dungeons were just kind of boring. And boring is way better than horrific and frustrating.

They show athleticism and general healthiness, there's an implication of strength but not to the degree that might become unappealing, stomachs in general are nice, they're a part that's freely shown but still something associated with...closer-to-nudity-ness. They're also literally in the middle - you get a nice look at the legs and underside of the breasts as well. And you've probably been conditioned to want to rub Khajiit belly as well.

>>46404359
Do you mean the tutorial dungeon? Man, that was tough. I went in blind because I'm brave like that, and I had no idea how to use my magic properly or how to fight the Imp. I had to go back and kill him with an elvish axe later. And then I had to figure out how to get out! The door's not very obvious if you have no idea that the door's just a texture on a wall. Interesting secret treasure behind the bookshelf, though.

The first dungeon beyond that was just a small crypt. That was disappointing, though I appreciated there was a difference in scale.
>>
>>46404630

No, I actually found Privateer's Hold to be pretty manageable. I also looted some crypts afterwards, but I don't consider those proper dungeons.

I'm talking about the first generic dungeon I did for a quest, which was an absolute nightmare.

Why did Bethesda decide that ranged sneak attacks should be so overpowered? It's even in Fallout too. I mean Morrowind did it reasonably, it was powerful, but not like triple or something damage like in later games.
>>
>>46406841
I think it's because morrowind relied on more "to hit" than just raw damage like Oblivion and Skyrim does.
>>
>>46406841
When you're not prepared for damage, it hurts more
Stubbing your toe hurts more than kicking a wall
There's also the idea that if you're sneaking, you arent wearing armor, and can't protect yourself if they attack after the strike

Still totally applies. There's always some fun to be had in it, especially since magic will become useless if you don't keep up with the proper spells as you level. New weapons are much easier to get.

>>46406841
Probably because they assumed that failing a sneak attack, or getting caught, meant that you would get destroyed in an open fight if you were built for sneaking and hiding, not taking hits. And fairly large parts of Oblivion and Skyrim, at least in their main stories, aren't easy to sneak and shoot in.
>>
>>46407104
Sneaking in Oblivion is harder than skyrim. In Skyrim the AI is retarded, in Oblivion if you don't make that hit count or if they're surrounded by allies, you're gonna caught at lower to mid levels
>>
>>46407058
Archery is still kind of overpowered in MW. Funny thing is that strength based damage bonus applies crossbows too (makes no sense, but it does), so things can get real crazy.

That feel when cliff races can become fun enemies to fight because you have enchanted strength and drop them with one hit from dwarven crossbow.

Still, there is one even more powerful class of archery weapon and that is darts. Specifically dwarven darts that those centurions with dartguns drop in Tribunal. I guess they wanted to simulate gunfire being very deadly, but since it's the dart does the damage the player can utilize that effect too.
>>
QUICK, which are better warriors? Orismer, Nords, or Redguards?
>>
>>46407959
That's very difficult to say, especially since their base stats change a little from game to game. If we go by the holy grail that is Morrowind, I'd have to say Redguards, since they're the most aggressive offensively. Nords and Orcs are more defensive in ways, and not as offensive.
>>
>>46407959
That depends on so many factors it reduces your question to meaningless conjecture.
>>
>>46407959
Redguards, both in lore and games. Also, read cockbride's Cyrus stuff.
>>
>>46407959
In what regard? Sheer effectiveness would be Nords and Redguards. Most agile swordsmen would be Redguards. Most land won and most victories would be Nords. Most sustainable would be Nords and Orcs.
>>
>>46408447
Have orcs ever actually succeeded in anything remarkable aside Orsinum that always gets sacked hard? Then again maybe it's just because their racial curse of being pariahs and everyone else hating them.
>>
>>46408646
I was thinking in terms of general mechanics since they're normally Heavy Armor/Smithing race.
But yeah, other than winning the land deeds to Orsinium, Orcs pretty much always lose.
>>
>>46408646
Being cursed doesn't help them much, but they are renowned as some of the best smiths and natural soldiers, even more so than Nords. But,then again becoming famous for an orc is usually proceeded by getting ditched by Malacath, so it may be in there best interest to stay under the radar regardless of accomplishments.
>>
>>46408646
Well, as an ethnic group, they have a solid reputation for being some of the best soldiers in the Imperial Legions. I actually wish you saw more Orcs and Redguards in the Legion on the games.

Does the fluff mention if they're ever officers, or are they discriminated against a lot?
>>
>>46408913
There doesn't seem to be enough fluff on Orcs to say whether they're discriminated in Legion, but in Morrowind they seem to doing fine and there even few Orc officers. However Deathshead (name of Gnisis garrison) of Legion in Morrowind that has lots of Orcs seems to be considered inferior (yet strong) compared to other garrisons.

Isn't Amaranth in a way inherently negative? Isn't it, in a sense, also a form of world-denial?
If you take the Anu of the Children's Anuad, his dream is a reaction to loss and sorrow. He secludes himself from his world, "physically" by "hiding in the sun", and mentally by going to sleep.
Even if you consider the Amaranth to be a positive process, one that's supposed to be a self-reflection and coming to terms with yourself, that process still necessarily calls for a negative. You cannot require a process such as the Amaranth unless there's a deep trauma driving you. Or in other words, if Dreaming is supposed to make things better, you have to be in a shitty place for it to occur, and you are going to have to deny the actual world around you.
>>
>>46412458

Oh shit n'wah what the fuck are doing.

And there's the Flower Child in C0DA, who's supposed to be the Amaranth born of Love.
>>
>>46412458
Actually, I should't call it denial, because that's not what it is. Anu doesn't deny anything that has happened, in fact it's critically important. It's more like total introspection, which is total seclusion. Direct contact with the "outside world" is severed, but it's contents are not denied.

>>46412708
I should just call it guaranteedreplies.png.

Anyway, C0DA has that, but I still kind of wonder the specifics about it. If it is a Amaranth born of love, not sorrow, why is Amaranth required? What is the point of introspection or seclusion if you already have love?
>>
>>46412458
No. That's why Lorkhan created the Arena. So somebody could achieve Amaranth and make a better reality.

Why does life exist? There is no reason.
>>
>>46412955
But isn't that essentially just another layer of gnostic thought? It's forsaking the Dream you're from to create something better within the Dreamer.

>>46413562
But saying "no reason" doesn't answer what I'm asking.
Anu seems to have a very clear reason to Dream. I don't know it it's supposed to be a fantasy, self-discovery, therapeutic, or whatever, but it's certainly something he chooses to do or become. It's a remedy or reaction to some sort of need.
What's the need of the Flower Child to Dream? Lorkhan sets its creation into motion, so it can't just be for no reason.

The most correct answer would be to say that they don't have alignments. They're beings of concepts, morality doesn't really matter to them. The only way you could argue that they're evil or good is from a human or elven cultural standpoint, but the Daedra themselves are beyond that.
As an example, Dagon is the Prince of destruction, but he's also about change, ambition and revolution.
Bal is about domination, and there's not only negative aspects to be found in submission.
