Tasigur's activated ability is insanely more relevant than the extra point of power in the late game, which is where you want to get the game state in Grixis. The card advantage is real. You can Kommand back creatures you flip and I've even played a Tasigur into Tasigur on board just to get the extra delve to fix his activation following Serum Visions.

I had a sicknasty jank pile on cockatrice, esper battle of wits. Basically played a bit like esper control but it also had some value creatures like blade splicer. All the counterspells, and the hand disruption, all the while removal. Was pretty fun and every hand was a new surprise. Idealic tutored into a Battle of Wits and won that way, lost the list though :(

Scooze eats whatever it wants as long as the controller has sources of Green mana to cough up, but if they're all tapped out of Green you can Snapcaster in and target the relevant card, and if it's an instant you can cast it before Scooze can eat it.

The gist of it all is that whoever is the most recent ability on the stack wins and pretty much negates whatever the other one was doing due to target invalidation and whatnot.

How can you guys enjoy by far the worst format in MtG (excluding memes like tiny leaders)? This format is garbage, it's high priced because it "doesn't rotate" but is rather forcibly rotated by Wizards for format diversity. So you get all the high price of legacy with the bullshit rotation of Standard and unlike standard you don't even know what's going to rotate, you just get a new ban list where they add more cards to it and take nothing off. This is the worst format I've ever seen and I have unironically played Prismatic.

Cards like Cabal Therapy test skill. I play a similar list to Gerard Fabianos Sultai control list except no goyfs cause I'm a broke faggot. Instead I run 2 scooze, an angler, and another maelstrom pulse. It's pretty fun desu senpai, and the scooze helps against burn and aggro and shit, so it's not even too much of a trade off.

I've spent about a year each in a variety of Magic communities in large and small cities. And only in the largest metropolitan centers does Magic communities not appear to be on life-support. Sometimes I look at Wizards' claims that attendance is through the roof and wonder what the fuck they're talking about. If attendance is surging in large centers but absolutely bottoming out in smaller centers to the point where events don't fire, there's a problem there even if there's an objective growth in players.

When a community dies in a city or town it takes a sustained year-long effort from the store and players to revive it. If the store goes under then your community becomes effectively extinct until some idiot opens up another store (the dumbest fucking business decision on the planet - nerds know how to shop online).

Maybe Wizards doesn't care about small communities anymore. Maybe they're fine with sales from Walmart or Target without a place for sanctioned play in some areas. It's just shocking that the two states of Magic communities are two polar opposites of wildly flourishing and an abandoned husk.

Pia and Kiraan are good for the same reason Lingering Souls is historically good. It's not obvious on paper, but just having 2 evasive 1/1 fliers can win or get you surprinsgly close to winning a significant percentage of games. It's an impactful late game top deck. Where Lingering Souls has flashback, Pia and Kiraan's analogue is the activated ability. Coupled with Kolaghans Command, getting back P&K from the yard just once for another ETB is huge.

Before Eldrazi Winter people used to talk a lot about how the Thopter tokens being colorless were relevant against Etched Champion in Affinity, but now the meta's so distorted who knows.

I can see Engulf the Shore playable in Blue Moon for the same reason you see Vedalken Shackles with "Islands matter." I like that there's strange synergy with the ability to reuse the artifact and the choice it forces your opponent to make when redeploying. The problem with the card is that it's expensive enough that you're almost always trying to go large with it. You probably aren't going to see much of people doing something cute like sticking it for 2 toughness to get rid of all your opponent's 1/1's to swing in with your Grizzly Bear army, but we might. You may see it as a one-of in sideboards against go-wide decks.

The mere existence of force of will in the format means that even if you have the turn one kill in hand you generally have to wait until you know your in the clear

This is what makes legacy great compared to modern, the interactions are usually so much more complex then "do you have a force" unless your playing oops or Spanish inquisitio

Standard is such a money sink its not even funny. Planeswalkers like Sarkhan who go for $30-40 during standard season plummet to $5 a month before rotation. Commander is by far the worst format even worse than modern honestly. There's no competitive aspect, the decks are boring to play and extremely inconsistent, and even though this is a bit anecdotal I have very rarely met a Commander player who wasn't an autistic annoying idiot with a superiority complex.

generally you're going to do it by archetype and format.

aggro: 17-21. you're in 1-2 colors and you're only trying to hit the first 3 land drops and vomit cards at the other guy until one of you is at 0 life or 10 poison.

midrange: 22-25 you're trying to hit minimum 5 lands with spot removal and a good base of quality threats.

control: 21-27 you're looking to make a land drop every turn with 1:1 answers, card advantage and 1 or 2 win conditions when the other guy is out of gas.

tempo: 19. you're playing delver. way to be 'that guy'. why don't you go stifle yourself, faggot.

the more important hitting every single land drop is, the more you're going to play. the real numbers can be adjusted with card filtering and card draw spells along with the mana curve of spells in the deck.

The problem with Battle of Wits is that it's not likely to be tournament legal.

Cards have to be at least single-sleeved with an opaque back. You have to be able to shuffle your deck in a timely manner, and you have to shuffle your entire deck at the same time. Pile shuffling is also not adequate for shuffling.
