I owned one before, but I sold it during the 2013 happening to get a 226. Wish I hadn't sold it - I like the 226 but it was an AK I got for 500 circa 2010 (sold it for almost twice as much, but now AKs are almost twice as much as they were back then).

I love how simple it was. And when I fired it I was amazed how damn well 0 recoil I had - remarkably much more noticable recoil firing a rented AR15 a few years later. But it is elegant in its simplicity and straightforwardness.

I've never used one but I'd love to get a FAL, and I like how Galilis look too.

Sure, for killing guys inside WWI tanks.

Then as time passed and technology progressed, it got relegated from an anti-armour role to anti-personnel and anti-materiel roles. Now, new weapons are set to replace what it does in those roles too.

It's had a graceful slide down but it can't coast on forever.

Not him, but I am an 11B. The Mk19 requires a shit-ton more maintenance than the M2, and as he describes, is far more prone to malfunction. Whenever we run a live-fire with the Mark, we always make sure to have at least one spare weapon on standby, simply because if one jams on the line, it's either going to be a simple fix or require so much time and effort that's more efficient to just replace it. The M2 will work in pretty much any conditions, and is a hell of a lot simpler to field-strip and fix if something goes seriously wrong.

As someone who owns a Thompson: you shoot a stick mag unless you NEED the drum, or you're sick of having money. Drum fire can be more than a little fiddly, as you're supposed to be winding the spring AS you empty the drum. Sustained 50 round fire just isn't / wasn't a thing.

Did I mention the Thompson is a big fat hog that goes through ammo like a morbidly obese woman goes through steakhouse yeast rolls?

Everything I've heard about stuff behind the scenes indicates it was an absolute shitshow, though. Inept leadership, no coherent vision, and completely unmotivated team members rotted the whole thing from within. For once, EA seems to have been telling the truth when they said it "failed to meet quality standards."

Shortly after the game's cancellation, a bunch of the devs started posting in the comments of this article. The dominant narrative that emerges is as I described. A couple of them claim that a few of the "creative directors" (of which there were several in succession) were actively trying to sabotage the project rather than have a broken game released with their names attached.

I liked how Dahl guns in BL2 were basically the guns you'd get if you didn't want to play BL2 and just wanted regular guns for a regular shooter. No crazy-ass magic bullets or insane spreads for the most part (there were a few obvious exceptions), just good old fashioned guns.

34 you can at least tell how its supposed to gun. You grab the only actual handle, hold the rest of the gun however you want along the massive square barrel housing, then stuff the vestigial fin flap thing into your armpit for stability I suppose, while you use psychic powers to phase ammo straight through the casing I guess or maybe the fin contains ammo who fucking knows its an enigma for the ages.

Scifi-guns look huge because the propmakers build them by covering a real gun so that the gun can be fired with blanks. (Sometimes this is only the signal when to add a laser beam effects, like they did in Star wars films.)

How this prop was made is a story in of itself.

>Weapons used by the space marines were based on real, fully functional weapons. British armorers used guns they found to be the most reliable when firing blanks and those which looked futuristic. The 'pulse rifles' were created from a Thompson SMG, with an attached forend of a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun and a Remington 12 Gauge Model 870P receiver with barrel.

And fuck off back to your pansy kraut space shit. I want my guns to look like they are wielded by manly men.

This, this shit right here. It's capable of putting out more kinetic energy than the standard modern firearms, each charge pack holds the equivalent of 150 shots, easily rechargeable but most important it's incredibly, incredibly reliable and cheap to mass-produce. Fuck all these over the top, unrealistic Boltguns and Plasma weapons, the Lasgun is the pinnacle of what a proper average Human soldier would actually need in operations.

It's because the future is american and american military arms were hopelessly, heartlessly utilitarian for a long stretch, which includes when Aliens got popular. As a result, that aesthetic has stuck with us.

It looks good, but above all I loved the ammo. The reload animation was replacing two AA batteries. Its a laser pistol running on AA batteries, what's not to love

I meant that machine pistols came out of a time when the gun you were expected to go into battle with was huge, so to be cooped up in a then-tiny motor vehicle with four guys who all had one was unreasonable.

Since then, I guess it's mostly to facilitate ease of school shootings. I hear they're coming out with one that can kill over a hundred students a minute.

To my sci-fi eye, I immediately see this as some civilian variety of the E-11, perhaps a hunting version, with synthetic wooden furniture. Of course, the more discerning operator could have one made with real wood furniture, perhaps ithorian, so you know that it has thoughts and feelings while you use it to shoot things.

I'm working on a steampunk setting that's vaguely based on the mid-late 1800s, so this is a lot of very useful stuff. I've spent a long time watching youtube videos of old fat guys talking about colt revolvers, henry rifles, flintlock, matchlock, snider-enfield, mosin-nagant, all that stuff, so it's good to see just some quality artistry and fantasy.

>>
>>46370517
Oh okay.

I agree, machine pistols are incredibly niche, there's no longer a need to issue vehicle crew a shorter than usual weapon and in most circumstances a submachine gun is superior.

Even submachine guns are on their way out nowadays (or have been for a while if you're looking at eastern equipment). Carbines can be made to be nearly as compact, while also offering better ballistics as well as simplifying your logistics footprint by a significant margin.
>>
>>46369884
More bullets down range faster.

From what I hear, a lot of modern arms designers, possibly militarys, have really embraced the whole ''whoever gets the most bullets on target fastest wins'' idea
>>
>>46370956
They do have momentum, but to get anywhere near the same neighbourhood as a regular old bullet, you'd have to shoot an absolutely absurd amount of them. As in, somewhere in the neighbourhood of the number that hit the earth per secon. At that point you don't even have to worry about the shot's kinetic aspect anymore, because firing a lasgun would be akin to setting off a small nuke or really big regular bomb.
>>
>>46370964
Law enforcement and special forces branches are still going to pick them over weapons that shoot rifle cartridges for hostage rescue and indoor counter terrorism biz because ballistics are a non issue and overpenetration is a thing.
>>
>>46371327
Ah yeah, that's certainly true. I was talking just in a military context.
>>
>>46371327

Getting decent frangibility and lethality out of a rifle cartridges is hard.
>>
>>46372003
Fuck no it isn't, long guns are much more lethal than handguns and smgs and good ammo for less barrier penetration has been avalable to law enforcement from the late 90's ant to the public from the early 2000's.
>>
>>46371314
Running the math, grabbing 8kgm/s as our typical hunting rifle cartridge momentum, that equals about half a metric ton of TNT. That's such a puny nuke it might not even be possible to build the fucking thing.

But when we're talking about a "kind 12 gauge" recoil gun that hits like the fucking Schwerer Gustav, yeah, I'll let it slide.

Meanwhile the sun hammers us with 4 megatons a second. That fucker be scary.
>>
>>46372003
Combining lethality with poor penetration is hard, since penetration is extremely important to lethality. And when it comes to quick moving shit, the drag forces when trying to move through liquids (or humans) are really good at making shit stop.

A gyrojet rifle with ramjet ammo?
>>
>>46377338
It's fired normally, but its bullets have ramjet engines. It's like a two-stage sort of bullet. First the regular chemical propellant begins propelling it, then as the air intake gets heated, it activates the ramjet engine, which further propels it once it's left the barrel.

With risk of sounding way too much like a 40kid, isn't that essentially a bolt round?

And 40k does predate CP2020, so yeah.
>>
>>46377429
Bolter uses a gyrojet system, not a ramjet.

And the concept of a two-stage projectile does predate 40k, so yeah
>>
>>46377488
>Bolter uses a gyrojet system, not a ramjet
I was mostly talking about the two-stage system, but well-
>And the concept of a two-stage projectile does predate 40k, so yeah
Really? I'd be very interested of it in that case. I can't find anything on the subject.
>>
>>46377664
Well, ICBMs are a three-stage system, and work off of ballistics science. Scramjets use two-stage systems, and they were first tested in the 1960s. The SHARP weapons project started in 1985, which tested scramjet systems for space use.
>>
>>46377488
>>46377664
Slugs that are launched by means of underpowered powder date back to th 1840s and some german ammo company apparently did produce gyroslugs for use in revolvers during WW2.

You're right, of course. I should have clarified I meant using multi-stage projectiles for firearms. Scramjets and two-stage aviation systems are indeed much older than 40k, but I've never seen them used for small arms or mentioned as developmental prototypes, probably because they'd be horribly complicated for a very minor advantage. Even with today's manufacturing standards they're difficult to get done accurately.

Incidentally, I've found the earliest mention of a two-stage rocket, with a charge to push the rocket out of the nozzle and a rocket to propel it further. It seems to be the Voss Rocket Musket, although the only source on the internet about it is Future Weapons by Kevin Dockery. Everything else is taken from his book.
https://books.google.com/books?id=_BJgKhwD2o4C
Apparently, it's a rocket rammed on top of a regular gunpowder charge, and is ignited by the gas discharge, although it was primarily used for signalling purposes.

The book mentions it's patented (presumably in Denmark), but I can't have a look into the Danish patent database. Somebody might dig up something interesting if they'd look there.

>>46377927
One is a normal slug with underpowered charge, the other a gyrojet. Neither of them is two-stage.
>>
>>46379370
As I said, the United States SHARP project meant to use Scramjet systems for small arms.
>>
>>46379487
The Super High Altitude Research Project was meant as a proof-of-concept for a space gun, and was used for the development of the scramjet and other such high-speed research. The intention was to build a larger "Jules Verne Launcher" which should be able to launch projectiles directly into orbit.

Nothing on scramjets in small arms. Nothing on small arms at all, to be honest. I've found links to an article from 2001 about using scramjets for projectiles and an interesting patent application from 1996 but no mention before that.

But I believe you, and this is a rather interesting topic, so any links you can provide would be appreciated.
