I DM'd for a player that went in a similar direction once, only he made a series of gynoid bodies his character could transfer his mind into.

He retired from supervillainy afterward, having begun marketing the technology while spending increasingly long periods of time as a little girl, under the guardianship of his previous nemesis.

All it all apparently started when I threw a joke encounter into the campaign with a fairy using a magic wand on people for lolrandum results.

When I was a kid I would always watch movies, and then as soon it was over, watch it again with the commentary. The commentaries for the first three Pirates movies are very revealing in this regard. Not only did the writers devise a ruleset for how Davey Jones's teleportation powers work, but in the first movie's commentary track they discuss in detail the relative sword skills of the main characters, and without explicitly saying the terms, stat Jack Sparrow as a rogue/duelist, Norrington as a paladin, Barbossa as a rogue, and Will Turner as a straight fighter loaded with combat and weapon mastery feats.

The story about a small encounter with the elemental plane of salt escalating into a world-ending epos was always one of my favourites, but I've been unable to find it since moe went down. Does anyone even remember that?

I also think that mary sue we created back in January had the potential to become something truly horrifying had we have a drawfriend around to produce something like the horrible pictures gathered there.

Alien: Isolation does this, in a way.

Through the whole game, it uses save stations, up until the very end. There's not even an alien nearby.

I think the alien chases you into a section with trains, or trams, or something. I just saw it in a let's play, never played the game myself, so I don't really remember. Anyway, it's been a while since you last had a save spot. It works like the upgrade station, you can't use it when the alien is nearby, and they're spread pretty far out so it's always a relief when you get one.

The trams or whatever fly by at a rather fast pace, and it's a classic 'cross over into this little safe place and you'll be fine, trust me'. But you're really high strung, you've just escaped the alien, it's been a long time since you've saved last. You really don't want to play through that last hour or two or whatever, and suffer through that alien chase again.

Then you die from the tram and you realize the game implements save points in this section of the game.

I swear those threads are just about the most cringe-worthy things on this board. Writing quality aside, it's just sad how every single poster is so far up their own ass that not a single one of them even bothers to read what the others write, but complains when no one is there to shower praise when they tell their SUPER AWESOME STORY.

Well, the problem is they squandered the potential set up by the first film by rehashing or exaggerating a lot of the same elements. It's very evident of "screenwriting by committee", of the producers taking the safe path to cash instead of expanding on what they had.

Look at it from a writer's perspective. Will and Elizabeth's character arcs were complete by the end of the first film, yet they brought them back and downgraded their relationship in typical sequel fashion. In fact, most of the cast from the first film returned when they didn't have to. They literally brought Barbossa back from the dead even though his death scene was perfectly executed.

Further, let's look at Jack. In the first film, we see he's a quirky, foolish, and evidently incompetent man--on the surface. Beneath all that, though, he's a very shrewd, charismatic and scarily competent guy with a strong moral compass. When they were writing the second film, though, they forgot that second part in favor of exaggerating his quirkiness to the point where that became his whole character. Because that's what audiences wanted, right?

They could've gone anywhere with the series after the first film; that's precisely the note it leaves off on. Instead, they went back to the same in order to guarantee success.

Absolutely this. The first film was fantastic and did well enough that they wanted to cash in on that success again, but without fully understanding what made the first one so good. They just got more and more nonsensical as time went on and the characterization got weaker and weaker.

I love Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa as much as the next guy, and seeing him and Jack playing off each other is always great, but you know what would have the best way to do it? A prequel, the two of them crew the Black Pearl the first time around, before they even hear about Cortez's goal. No Will, no Elizabeth, no romantic subplot, just pirates doing pirate things with a completely separate goal and villain. Have Jack and Barbossa mostly cooperate but show the growing potential for a serious divide between them-- and then end the movie with the current situation resolved in the final scene have some first, obvious hint about the cursed treasure (maybe a map with the clear imprint of the iconic skull coin) show up, and have Barbossa look at clearly intrigued.

Just to keep this thread bumped:

I think the movie was just fine. Which is a compliment and a bit of an insult.

Like, I watched it twice in theaters, if I recall correctly. Too many friend groups to avoid it. And watching it the second time, I had my own personal list of what would have made it GREAT. What would have made it the worthy inheritor of the hype it had built.

As it was, I liked it, I'll buy it, and I'll gladly acknowledge it as perhaps one of the top three Star Wars movies.

But it played too safe, too predictable, and sitting around a table with a friend, we kept thinking up things that would have made it better in our eyes. But we can't be certain they'd have made it better for everyone.

It reminded me of something some internet reviewer had said about Episode 1: They watched it at a fairly young age, and learned something about making movies. That's kind of how I felt about Force Awakens. It's a 7, maybe a weak 8. But I can see how they could have made it a 9 or 10.

One of my friends pointed out a real easy thing they could have done, and just keep the Kylo reveal secret. If you remove every line Han and Leia have about him being their son, but keep when they talk about him, it sounds like they're talking about LUKE. So the idea of "Oh shit, did Luke go Sith?" Would have hung over the film until Han's line "What do you expect to see?" "MY SON>"

It's probably because if you enter in a clear area and then open up and upgrade bench, the bench doesn't deactivates itself if a monster gets cose to you, but the monster cannot attack you if you are in bench mode. As soon as you close the bench, the monster jumps you

I agree that the over the top personalities of Jack and Barbosa do better with normal people around, it's just that with Will and Elizabeth's arcs done it would nice to have some different normal people instead of the same ones again-- either some new non-pirates, or by fleshing out more of the Pearl's crew than Gibbs, Pintel and Ragetti.

4 is shit. Complete shit. It's barrel-scraping shit for people who love Jack because "lolrandum".

I agree the transition to 2+3 was a bit weak, but I still think they're great movies; funny, but still capable of being serious. 4 is just...a joke. having Will+Liz be in 2+3 gave the audience a link between them; a point of stability. It added context to the events of the series. Even if there had been similar, but previously unheard of characters in 2/3, it wouldn't have worked as well. The biggest mistake they made was wrap up 1 so nicely.
