Question: Which civs do you like to see more of?

Should be /civg/ Civ General as the title

But I would like to either see non-humanoid civs, or space civs

Don't post a chart. Tell your players what options, if any, are available, based on what you are interested in running.

Don't assume generic D&D fantasy shit. Definitely don't invoke classes and levels.

Lastly and most importantly, don't listen to myrm, ever.

>>
Is there any special reason for why namefagging is encouraged?
>>
>>46284397
Same reason as for quests, the identity of the CM is actually important so we can distinguish their comments from the herd.
>>
>>46284416
I mean the chart itself encourages namefagging. Why would anons want to namefag?

Besides, the CM would be better served by getting a tripcode.
>>
>>46284429
I don't know what you're referring to on the chart but I can speak from experience as a CM that I just used the name field because I don't know how to use tripcodes. That's probably behind at least a good bit of it.

I will grant you, though, that there's a lot of toxicity attached to this whole business of namefaggotry, which is why I used generic names like "CM."
>>
>>46284477
You see the chart on >>46274648
Look at the instructions just under the title.
"Namefagging is encouraged for players."
>>
>>46284491
Yeah that's just plain faggotry to me, like some forum RP shit, and I don't know why the creator of that chart would encourage it.

Realistically I don't think anyone will be able to really answer this since we all have our own ways of doing it.

I think the best advice you can take from the other anons is:
>>46283682
>>46283668
>>46283661
>>46283611
>>46283635

Bee and Ant Girls are one of my favorites too.

>>
>>46274522
Anything come of the tech tree someone was working on? Could we see what they've got so far?

Also, maybe it would be a good idea to let players work on developing culture and such for the civs. Adds another layer to the game, helps keep the civs unique.
>>
>>46274648
I hate the choices you have to make in this chart. It's not showing two different types of the race, it's just arbitrarily splitting up defining race traits.
Can you honestly imagine treants that don't photosynthise? Serpentfolk that don't slither?
>>
>>46287255
here's what I came up with so far. Admittedly it's more or less stolen from Jyoti/DeadQm's Ghouls, but hey, it works alright.

It was still a WIP when I last checked it as I like to leave some form of customization for the players, as in the magic category.
Research tree:
> Tech we have
# Tech in progress

Agriculture: > Gathering - Land clearance - Irrigation - Compost - The Plow - Communal Farming - Crop Rotation
- Animal husbandry - Selective breeding - Animal training - Pack animals - Mountable animals - War Mounts

Military: > Hunting Bands - Militia - Basic Tactics - Warrior Code - Drills - Advanced Tactics - Logistics - Chain of Command -

Tools: > Stone tools - Scrap tools - Crude smelting - Crude metalworking - Stone forge - Basic smithing - Basic Metalworking - Metal Casting

Social: > Tribal community - Theology - Written Laws - Tax Labour - Currency - Guilds - Education - Banking - Vassalage - Foreign affairs - Empire

>>
Would you play civ in a world where gods do exist and give out boons (technologies, blessings, etc.)? The civs will have additional parameter (Piety) and with it rising civilization will receive additional patronage
basically mixing civ with dawn of worlds
>>
>>46274522
Civs are dead.
>>
>>46291075
That depends. Can the gods intervene and perform Ten Plagues shit? And what limits are there to piety? What's to stop every civ from devoting literally everything to making the biggest monument to their god?
>>
>>46291122
Less abrahamic, more King of Dragon Pass - they offer blessings and boons, but will not just rain food or locusts on demand.
Although i'm toying with the idea of sufficiently pissed god going all Sodom and Gomorrah on betrayers of his faith's asses
>>
>>46291163
So getting good shit is more of a dice roll, and higher piety increases the chance of a useful boon?
>>
>>46274522
Running vamp civ tonight, look for it around 8-9pm eastern time
>>
>>46291182
That and actions made in god's name, like god of fire, earth and metal appreciating metallurgy research and can bless forges to make resulting metal even more amazing. Or a god of law and justice you (ostensibly) worship going "wtf dude" if you routinely massacre civillians and starting to stifle your armies'progress.

So it's more additional bonuses but with caveat that you should practice what you preach.
>>
>>46291075
That could actually be an interesting mechanic.

>>46291182
Unless it's heavily reliant on dice. Random chance shouldn't determine whether you get blessed or fucked over.

Piety should.
>>
>>46291302
So the gods are actually fairly active in their opinions, and not just waiting for you to worship them? Sounds good to me.
>>
>>46291303
Yes, random dice would probably decide how much godjuice do you normally get, with additional piety being gained (or lost) by deeds.

Probably gonna make this matter of not overall piety (like, get 2000 godjuice - get new reward), but a matter of consistent growth (If you previously consistently produced 200 praisethesunium per turn, but started to praise harder and now produce 300 praisethesunium, you get noticed more).
>>
>>46291448
It might take some balancing later, but I'd be interested.

I could imagine a breakthrough in metallurgy despite having access to only bog iron would gain attention from !Vulcan, while !Faustitas will be pleased if you treat your livestock well.

>>46302584
well, you're being mean to him, let's give him a chance

just fucking with you
>>
>>46302228
Then you must ask yourself the question "how hard?"

Because unless you have a PHD in astrophysics, you will not manage to run a hard sci-fi anything, much less a civilization level game written on the fly.

So you need to ask yourself where and how you want to cut corners and soften things up? Will you ignore delta-V? Fuel efficiency is just assumed to be a non-issue? Material science is assumed to have unlocked magical near mass-less metamaterials as strong as diamond? These are all things that can serve as explanations for hand waving or simplifying otherwise overwhelmingly complex issues. Will you keep track of every planet, celestial object, and orbital path in the game and dynamically calculate the delta-V and acceleration of every ship to figure out the travel time between any two places, or will you add a "speed" stat and roll a few dice to account for orbits?

In any case, regardless of if you want to run a space opera, pulp, or something that looks like hard sci-fi, the single most critical thing to keep in mind is consistency. Players can deal with some incredibly outlandish things, but the moment something is not internally consistent, then they find it odd.

So long as it's internally consistent, anything goes. Just make sure you have fun.

In the name of Excrement and Mirth, I'm gonna try to make a Sci-Fi Civ Chart, races heavily inspired by ayy lmao encounters with a dab of current tropes. This will be more of an experiment/attempt at fun, and is actually antithetic to how I would run a space quest. I digress.

I did, I DM'd and played as the Insect civ cause the players insisted, but I wasn't really trying to win or anything, I intentionally razed and devoured villages I took so my hive would eventually starve itself and collapse under it's weight, I would've self-capitulated in the event of a civ-conflict anyhow, I wanted the players to have fun, not me

I like ants so it was basically oversized Formicidae killing and being killed over more land (I made the voracious hunger thing more of a lethal wound than an inconvenience like the chart states), I was eventually sending workers to steal fucking livestock, foodstores got that desperate

Only mutations I took were corrosive acid for fortification building

This is great. I've run a civ like game with each player having their own civ, but that was via PnP.

I was thinking of just using a google doc shared between players and a DM version.
>>
>>46322007
Hexographer would be a good choice, but make sure you are very familiar with it, especially its GM and shroud modes.

>Google Doc Shared
Will your players have laptops? From a session perspective having them actually have laptops might lead to distractions.

However, shared doc is a good idea. And never forget that Google Sheets can be useful for resource talling and such. I've used it to good effect in mine.

So, in the spirit of Transparency and Homonculi civ coming to an end soon(ish), I'd like to share my thoughts on some civs I'm interested in doing up in the near future and would love to hear your guys opinions on what you'd like to see done up or hear suggestions, etc..

>Crystallid Civ
The default go to- have been talking about it a lot before and have established very much what I intend on doing with it: no-sex, mineral people, little bit of war/competition, IN SPACE, at the dawn of time pre-any forms of life. Lots of spiritual shenanigans- perhaps even a little more so than cyclops civ. If you want more of what Cyclops civ was- you'll like this.

>Undead Civ
More of a "city-state" or "country" manager than an entire civilization: we would focus around the undead ruler of an Undead country forming on the outskirts or within the referenced "Rotwood" and try to make a safe haven and city for sapient/aware undead. Each session would be about "10 years" and gameplay would focus on expanding and upgrading your country to make it more appealing to undead migrants and refugees as well as dealing with the unique societal and cultural problems faced by such a multitude of different undead trying to live peacefully and so forth. The first choice players would indeed make is what 'type' of undead they'd wish to be the leader. If you want more political intrigue, drama and conflict- you'll like this.

>Bee Girl Civ
We do up a tribe of 1ft tall cute bee girls in a pristine, untouched and beautiful "dire" woods: far from any civilization the aim of the game would be a mix of survival and cute bee girls (and a couple of cute bee boys) doing cute bee things lead by a big, curvy, 2ft tall 'giantess' (by their standards) queen bee. Would mostly be a for-fun/joke civ that would be moe-garbage that I could run on autopilot, though depending on how poorly we do it would very well go madoka pretty hard. If you want me to do something Harvest-moon esque then you might like this.

>>46337542

Oh and the fourth bonus option:

>/D/emon Civ.
If you guys know where I could host a horribly nsfw /d/-tier civilization: I'm not at all opposed to doing one up -uncensored-. You know, just a bunch of /D/emons- From the mildly to wildly referenced "Red world" tryin' to make a living in their horrifically sexually charged native realm. I guess the "first choice" given could be a choice between what sort of Demon Lord you'd wish to follow.. And that would set the pace for goals/fetishes, I.E: a hermaphroditic giantess omnibus, maybe an Imp Gang Boss or a swarm of Succubi/incubi- Who knows.
Should be a good time.
>>
>>46337542

I demand cuteness!

If you're wondering what went on in that civ, basically, to make spidergrils, we "experimented"
Read:Had sex.
with captured/enslaved Elf grils, and the Queen herself personally "experimented" Read:Had sex with captured males. Nothing came out of that one though.

We also decided that the Spidergirls were priestesses of our Queen, who we decided was our Goddess of Fertility, and Beauty. Our Queen was a Spidergirl before we created Spidergirls.

>>46323088
Nah, /d/oesn't allow quests. Even if your dubs would allow us to.
>>
>>46337644
>>46337872

I'm thinking for the Undead Civ the leader choice would be about balancing the skills, personality and so forth of the Undead leader since different undead would have different goals, skill-set and would leave a different impression on their people.
Here's a basic example, but something like:

>Skeleton Lord or King
Stereotypical "laughing skeleton". Has been dead for so long he's rotten away to a skeleton; no longer remembering who or what he used to be, but is using this as a chance to claim royalty. A mild to wild psycopath- He is generous and liberal with wine and merriment and although mildly racist against the living he is the most accepting to all undead types.

>Vampire Lord
Excessively beautiful, handsome and charismatic 'young' vampire who's out to 'stake' a claim for himself and build his first country. Overall the "well-balanced" choice: equally invested in the lives of his undead subjects, but not opposed to accepting living outsiders (he needs a court of consorts, followers and a source of living blood after all). Very much a RTS kind of chap.

>Bashful Necromancer
A quiet and shy Necromancer; she works a lot behind the scenes or is otherwise the "woman behind the curtain" for her people. Not interested in the drama of political intribue: she just wishes to build a secure and cozy home for her undead 'family'. Very much a ""This Land is Peaceful, its Inhabitants Kind" sort of gal. Only leader who can CREATE more undead as opposed to accepting migrants for population growth. Is herself not undead.

>no pharaoh/lich option

You're perfectly welcome and encouraged to make suggestions.

Another concept/idea I had for a leader option:

>Creeper Nun
Made from the harvested and gutted organs of at least a dozen nuns, held together with wrappings torn and made from sacred texts- She was an attempt at making an Undead immune to "Holy". The same type of undead as Elizabeth from Homonculi Quest: The Creeper nun would be the theocratic choice as despite her creators intentions she wishes to create a religion and seek a god that would provide comfort and hope for all undead. She'd be the "weirdest" choice for sure.

>>46340865
I'm not making a chart, but the races I'm planning to make cards for (because they will be in the civ game I'm running) are cat girls, dog girls, and bunny girls. The basic premise is that most of the beast races were early Great Migrators fleeing the monster races and now Rome's unwilling and/or unable to continue protecting the beastmen so the journey to new lands begins anew.

Well I had a few different ones.

The one I tried to do was Golem Civ a few months back. But it went no where because I hated how I ended up running it. I make a terrible QM/CM

The Golems are the creation of the Forge God of the Setting, and have lived underground since as long as they can remember.
How ever an earthquake up roots them and forces them to move above ground.
There they come into conflict with other races.

The furthest we got was pissing off the Elves that lived in a near by forest by cutting down their trees to make a new settlement.

The golems are a peaceful race that love forging and creating new technology.
To them, weapons and armor are not only tools, but art.
They have 'gender' of a sort.
Male Golems have a blue glow to the stone in their chest. Which is called a Soul Stone, a small, nearly indestructible stone that houses the Golems very essence.
Female Golems soul stone glows pink.
When a male and female golem fall in love, they create a body of a child like Golem and use a Soul Stone to create new ones.
Soul Stones are created by Priests of the Forge God.
The child Golem usually grows to 'adulthood' within 16 years, with the average life span being about 1000 years, before their soul is called back to the Forge God.

They are weak to lightening and explosives.

Should they ever encounter Flesh Golems, they would harbor an unrelenting hatred for them and destroy them as quick as possible.

They would naturally be good at creating new items, mining and such.
But suffer poorly in magic and other related areas.
Being Golems, they do not require rest, but do chose to do so, so that they may spend time with their 'families', if they have one.

Thoughts?

>Dinosauroids and loxo?

>Animal people.

(I know Dinosaurids aren't technically animal people, but they're included in this as a technicality)

Generally speaking I try to refrain from choosing or picking any sort of Animal people.
I don't really enjoy Animal people as a "Civilization" building species given how MANY of them there are and how similar they are all to one another in general theme in feel.

I mentioned Bee Girls as a potential "Civ" because it would be a break from serious Civving and be cute girls/boys doing cute bee things.

I greatly appreciate Animal People as a kind of complimentary or footnote species: a product of a world being excessively magical and fertile to the point where there's a primitive sub-division of animal person in almost every environment.
They never amount to much of anything, but they walk a thin line between "people" and "animal"- and if existing in a vacuum never advancing beyond the point of being above nature, but at the same time being "sophisticated enough" to assimilate well into more advanced species civilizations.

They're basically, uh.. They're like a HomoHabilis kind of stage: Too in-line with being an animal to truly advance, but just humanoid enough if they get outside help they'll quietly roll into society.
So, yeah, that's my stance on Animal People.

>Thoughts?

Honestly it just sounds like you know/knew everything you need to know right down to what you did wrong: You picked a race, but got tired of it.

Which is a classic blunder, but realistically one that you never see coming.

I don't know exactly what to tell you, but from my experience with my two civs:

I guess the best thing you can do or learn from these kinds of situations is you have to constantly have things going on, evolving and developing: Complacency in your civ, race, etc.. Eventually kills it as all the fun and magic gets sucked out of it and from that point on everything seems to just spiral down.
You gotta make it exciting for your players and you have to make it exciting for yourself.

Things need to "go wrong" and your people have to have "problems", etc.

I'd join this civ.

And I'd look at the hentai for it.

>I don't really enjoy Animal people as a "Civilization" building species given how MANY of them there are and how similar they are all to one another in general theme in feel.

That's when you start mixing it up. Just the difference in physical characteristics would make wildly distinct species. Then we add in magical and mythical shit and voila!

>They never amount to much of anything, but they walk a thin line between "people" and "animal"- and if existing in a vacuum never advancing beyond the point of being above nature, but at the same time being "sophisticated enough" to assimilate well into more advanced species civilizations.
See, there's where i disagree with you. My biggest gripe with beastmen is that they're always portrayed as something between "ravenous horde" and "noble savages" or, if we take certain sources, "noble savages being forcefully civilized by mighty human D". This is boring. This is not only boring, but IS the reason
>I don't really enjoy Animal people as a "Civilization" building species given how MANY of them there are and how similar they are all to one another in general theme in feel.
exists. You cannot have different beastmen if you do nothing different.

wow thanks anon for using my chart for inspiration- heres the "latest" if you want it-(or for anyone else)----------------------------

i think im going to take a hiatus from the civ community, dont worry ill check in every once in a while (and still try to make it to Cyclops' civ threads if i can, sorry for missing the last one pretty much)

to me it honestly is starting to feel a bit....dull and overdone- does anyone else feel like this?i've had some ideas to make it different but i havent had the motivation to put forth the effort lately....
im glad to see the civ community thriving again once more though

Rolled 11, 20, 22, 25, 15, 15, 13, 20, 7, 24, 3, 17, 20, 11, 10, 22 = 255 (16d25)

>>46333358
I can't decide if I love or hate this chart.
>>
>The Evo thread is still dead
Bruh, where are you OP..?
>>
>to me it honestly is starting to feel a bit....dull and overdone- does anyone else feel like this?
Literally everyone on /tg/ who isn't on this thread.

Everyone keeps wondering why civ threads keep dying. The interest is not there.
Scrapping the charts might go a little ways towards not scaring off people.

Honestly, I think civ players and CMs should migrate to www.nationstates.net or the like.
Maybe we'll return to /tg/ one day, but the age of civilisation has passed.

>to me it honestly is starting to feel a bit....dull and overdone- does anyone else feel like this?
>Literally everyone on /tg/ who isn't on this thread.

I hold this exact sentiment one way or another and it is largely the reason why I only host civs once a week despite requests.
>>
questions to CMs

is anyone using the 6d6 technique to counter the shitty below average dice rolls on this board, or are you rolling your own IRL dice?

and how do you account for multiple tech bonuses in combat rolls, do you roll one or multiple dices or take that into account manually when writing the outcome?
>>
>>46347962
I tried it, but it was surprisingly....low.

Not too many people understand how to add negatives either, so all in all, there are better things to try. I think next time, I'll just ask for rolls less often and use 3d6 best of 3 when I DO ask for rolls.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I'm not the best example, as part 2 of Otter Quest was sadly cut short by my own personal life, but I feel as if the interest in Civ Quests isn't dying, but simply growing tired of the same ol' formula.

Snows Kolbold Quest and the one mindflayer one is proof that not only can Civ Quests be improved with races that aren't usually picked, but can also be funny and lighthearted comedic tales of dub abuse.

Alright, /civ/ here's challenge (for my upcoming system mostly, i'm now testing how unique cultural stuff works).
What would be civ's greatest cultural achievement? Something that people automatically recall when thinking of your civ, like Eiffel town for France, Great Wall for China or spurdo memes for Finland?

Feel free to pick any civilization or make up your own, i need food for thought.

Ant people would make gigantic ziggurat-mounds that act as entrances to their colonies

Either that or pyramids. Lots of pyramids.

im not sure if you're the only one whos saying that the "chart needs to be scrapped"- i dont think thats the problem, as its the template....(maybe im biased though, because of how much time i've spent on the damn thing..)
i think what make cyclops civs so fun is he incorporated things other than "lmao roll to kill XX people ETC" and it actually had somewhat of a story-
i have some ideas that could revolutionize civs as we know but i need alot of time and i dont want to waste it if its just going to be pushed aside.

as far as migrating, i think thats a terrible idea as it takes away from...the community in more than one way- it would change the format and playstyle and i highly suggest NOT moving, but trying to create new and exciting ways to play/create for civs to be fun(im not saying they're not fun but like i said, they get dull and...almost tedious if i may)

1 idea i had- is to have a community of people dedicated to the cause and make a rules template, a "set setting", and among other things as a base- so that people are more motivated, like i said people dont have to carbon copy it but just to give them ideas.
as far as your claim for the age of civ passing, i disagree, i believe its just a "dark age" for civs at the moment-i could elaborate more but i believe you all get the gist of what i mean

as far as the community, it could be a good idea, it could be a horrible idea, but i would like to know what the "star players" think- just to name a few (crog, cyclops, jyoti, shmeh, sorry if i missed anyone)
if so i could create a group on steam/skype whatever the case may be and we could start creating a schedule and get some shit done.
>>46347884
>>46352020
we need to really get some people together and thinks of ways to make things more interesting in the long run----

i really dont want civs to just be a burned mark on /tg/ and have it fade away- especially with how much time i've spent on trying to keep the community as a whole alive
thoughts?

insect civ where you can find on suptg, forget the name

there wasa civ site and we had a Xenomorph civ, loved every second of it

I ran a post-apocalyptic zombie civ (two technically, one modern day, another fantasy) and the fantasy one lasted a while and was pretty much well reviewed, wish I never stopped it

I wasn't aware that there was an evo general so it's probably best to merge that with something, but civ games are sufficiently different from quests to merit a separate general even if activity is slower.

I'm new to civ quests but want to run one sort of civvy in nature. How do you guys usually take care of things like resource, finance and manpower management?
>>
>>46372321
Wing it.
>>
>>46372321
Exact numbers are more trouble than they're worth, unless you manage to set up a huge excel sheet and plug in inputs whenever you feel like it.

Try to narrow it down to qualitative assessments:
>what do you want to accomplish with X management?
>What are the important milestones in quantity, how does each milestone impact things, and how quickly/easily can a resource switch milestons?
>Be wary of power/consumption creep, because it will often render all your carefully balanced mechanics useless
>Be EXTRA wary of population increase, because that usually messes up EVERYTHING with constant updates to what counts as "much" food, etc.
>>
>>46372406
I agree that I don't want to make it too exact but I just want it to act as a limiting factor. Endless money and endless manpower and endless ships simply make everything too easy and uncomplicated. It simply exists as a challenge, as a knowledge of how strong you and your empire are.
>>
>>46372429
I wasn't suggesting that?
>>
>>46372321
Binary do you have access to this item or not. Got this luxury? Your people are happier. Got this rare resource? Your army is now upgraded to use it. Got that resource? Unlocked a school of magic. If you want an actual number simulator, make a spreadsheet and try to simulate how it will look like after X turns so see if the numbers are still logical to you. Then you can use that spreadsheet to calculate fast between turns. Normally people just half ass it and keep it as ambiguous as possible.

>>>46372690
>>
>>46371918
Try not to have a spasm next time someone doesn't share your opinion. It could help you later on in life. Quests, in general, can be quite different from one another. One can be only about the main character and a story, another can be about an upstart with a guild simulator with recruits and a spreadsheet. The main character being an abstract civ or a hero leading the civ is just more of the same. Players still roleplay a council or voices in someone's head. I never did see the merit in separating civs from the main quest general, except that as an act of courtesy the quest general is reserved usually for weekends (after that anti-questfag janitor had a stroke about them and eventually got kicked, but the community kept this habit). But it would, at least, increase popularity slightly further via mingling and proper search tags. Having the quest tag on your civ thread would already show up on many more users' catalogs.
