Early Friday thread. That's cool.
>>
So... "Notes on Racial Phylogeny"
Heavy handed, in-universe propaganda or actual good info?
>>
>>46243412

I was under the impression it was pretty accurate, though the dismissal about cross-breeds was kind of heavy-handed.

I mean, that's what Bretons are as a whole, and I find it sort of odd that the different Human ethnicities are considered practically different species. Same with Mer for that matter. I can only really imagine that being a barrier for Argonians and Khajit.
>>
>>46243412
I take it as good info as it is the only info, (that I know of), on that subject. It might turn out to be completely wrong, but at least it's a starting point.
>>
>>46243478
>dismissal about cross-breeds was kind of heavy-handed.
Yeah; on the other hand, I do appreciate them not "...forcing a coupling to satisfy our scientific knowledge."

Even if the author used the term "Regrettably".
>>
>>46243478
>Generally the offspring bear the racial traits of the mother, though some traces of the father's race may also be present.
>some traces of the father's race may also be present.
I want this meme to end.
>>
>>46243412
Actual good info. WEWUZELVESfag needs to stop being so ass-blasted that Khajiit aren't elves, and stop trying to discredit an actual source to fit his head canon.
>>
>>46244987
It's so the devs never have to bother adding racially mixed individuals into the game while still not decanonizing the origins of the Bretons.
>>
>>46245150
Yeah, I know. That's why I think it's stupid when somebody tries to use Bretons as a way of saying Racial Phylogeny is wrong, when it was made to keep Breton origins canon.
>>
Did Reman conquer Summerset Isles?

How? Even Tiber Spetim couldn't conquer those guys without Numidium
>>
>>46243083
It looks like the Dewmer would have a stand
>>
>>46245437
>They pay their Imperial tithes, I'm sure, not for fear of war with the humans but rather to keep an invasion from "infecting" their islands
>During the Second Empire ambassadors were allowed only in the capital of Alinor, and thus any description of the Altmeri homeland is confined to that city alone
http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Pocket_Guide_to_the_Empire,_1st_Edition/Aldmeri_Dominion
Summerset likely just outright submitted to Reman II to preserve their lands from being tainted by any possible invasion and the men that come with it.
The Cyrodiil's control over the Isles was superficial anyways, given their ambassadors weren't even allowed outside of Alinor.

Tiber Septim was the only guy to actually straight up conquer the isles.
>>
>>46245437
>>46245647
The Altmer probably acceded to the Reman empire diplomatically, as opposed to the submission that the Septims demanded of all kingdom-"provinces."

It's interesting to note how many TES deities are obviously Glorantha-inspired.
Shor and Auri-El as Orlanth and Yelm is an obvious one, though Lorkhan himself is more a mix of The Second Son and Eurmal.

Morihaus is a fierce and warlike Storm Bull just like Urox. Argrath is a famous human warlord who was actually several people at once pretending to be one, and enjoyed similar status among the Orlanthi as Talos did among the Nords (also bearing heavy Orlanthi influence).

Elmal and Umakt bear some obvious comparisons to Trinimac. Especially Elmal, as he's also a sungod.

The Lunars and the Marukhati also bear some interesting parallels.

There's a ton more I'm missing.

What language in TES is the most fleshed out? Is there any language that could possibly actually be used, sort of like Tolkien's Elvish?

Dovah and Aldmeris. Neither of them are at the point where they could be used to, say, write a whole book our passage, but for select simple phrases they're pretty much good.
>>
>In other news, the invasion of Orsinium by a combined Wayrest/Daggerfall force has been called off today, as the local inhabitants of the city found out and burned their own capital to the ground themselves before the Breton forces even crossed the border. It is weird how between Daggerfall and Morrowind, we went on a full 180 about how Orcs are a civilized race you can actually play as and interact with.

What do you think was the cause for the shift? I doubt it was for a new angle - the Nords were perfectly fine barbarians in their own right, and Orcs struggle to maintain their culture because they can't hold their own kingdom.

>Meanwhile, Sir Lywenanuel Rolsgnese of Wayrest was allegedly hear to remark that if the Orcs were going to just take all the fun out of it, he was going to move to Solstheim"

Man, Orcs are probably my second or third favorite race. I just think it's comical how Orsinium getting sacked is basically a weather pattern now.

>>46253400
I dunno, maybe the developers wanted to balance out the race list? Three Human types, Three Elf types, Three Non-human/elf types?

Sometimes people would still swear by Shor, and there were other mentions of the old gods, and there were a few people you could find who worshiped old gods, but they were treated like different forms of the Eight. Otherwise at best you have the vague nature spirits of the Reachmen and the Atomoran people.

I mean, I'm not surprised - Morrowind was actually more of an exception than the rule when it came to how much of a focus was on dieties and worship - but it is still rather disappointing when nothing is done with what's actually given.

You can deny it all you want but MK having a BIG influence on the universe pre-Oblivion is a fact, and going "LALALA DON'T HEAR YOU" won't make it go away.
Psijic Endeavor is a well-known thing supported by numerous in-game sources (The Changed Ones, Varieties of Faith in the Empire, Spirit of Nirn etc.) If you didn't know about it before this thread - you're most likely a Skyrim (or worse an ESO) kiddie who doesn't know shit and should fuck off to /r/teslore.

>>46263062
I should think calling ANY race strictly Anuic or Padomaic is a stretch, as mortality inherently brings with it the capacity to not be a universal stereotype. Some races have strong ties due to their cultural or religious leanings, like the Altmer's veneration of the Elhnofey leading to an Anuic worldview or the Khajiiti sharing a strange connection with Azura and Lorkhan, but within specific races you can still get exceptions naturally.

In the Dunmer's case... They got changed by one Daedra, worship a triumvirate of other Daedra and Vivec's writings go into a fair amount of detail about the Endeavour. Culturally, it's hard to deny at least some Padomaic bias there. That's not headcanon, that's simple observation.
>>
>>46263293
>You can deny it all you want but MK having a BIG influence on the universe pre-Oblivion is a fact

Nah. Redguard was shit. MW is his only claim to fame and his esoteric philosophy is optional which limits the influence. Remove his writings from the lore and you lose absolutely nothing, infact you'd gain comprehensibility.
>>
>>46264191
>Remove his writings from the lore and you lose absolutely nothing
You do remove parts of the metaphysics of the setting by doing so, and those are a big part of what makes the setting more interesting than most fantasy fiction out there.

I dunno about that. It's nearly impossible to get an accurate idea of how many Argonians there are based on average population, just because of the decentralized nature of the confederated tribes of Argonia. The heavy dismissal of half-breeds is likely just to explain why there's no half-elves, or anything like that. Which, again, is likely because Beth decided it was a lot more simple if they just said crossbreeds weren't a thing.

It's been retconned to death by much more generic and retarded stuff. I just choose to ignore the newer interpretations.
Good thing there are Province: Cyrodiil and Skyrim: Home of the Nords projects which would probably deliver these provinces as they should've been.

>what do sloads look like
Like this.
>>
>>46274140
I was looking at the scrollhammer 1ed breton army list and many of the units seemed generic - I had a couple of ideas based on the first ed guide

eg. "peasant knigths" based on the ideas of quest-obsession and the incidents of battles between the "knightly orders" of Anticlere and Sensford

ligth cavalery/ horse archers based on the Bjoulsae River horse people tribes

archer/slinger scout units based on Wrothgarian Mountain herders

agents based on the fact that many famous spys in tamriels history were Brets, and with some nice rules representing them infiltrating the enemies court/retiniue and poisoning the food/feeding false info etc

Also re: >>46270251
Since it's an Old Ehlnofex word and apparently being used as such, there being others, it (and those others) should be capitalized, whereas stuff like Chim-el Adabal is (for lack of a better word because dinner out foodcoma) 'appropriated' for its meaning, and so not capped. The metaphysical version is capped because it is in the original Old Ehlnofex form, and those words are just all caps all the time.

>>46265900
But piracy is a fairly large problem for the Argonians - part of their traditional distrust towards other races comes from the fact that the most contact they have with them comes from bandits and thieves hiding out from the Empire, and pirates using Black Marsh as their base.

It's not that no one else can survive in there, it's that most people don't want to. There's no real draw for settlement there because it's such harsh terrain (unless you're a Redguard, then you love a land that you have to conquer). So the Imperials just used it as a prison camp, which is arguably even worse.
>>
>>46280596
Both Nerevar and Dumac are parts of a complex manyfold enantiomorph, with their positions somewhat corresponding to those of Boethia and Trinimac/Malacath, Boethiah being a fan of Lorkhan and Neravar being the "Son of Boethiah", Trinimac being the Champion of Aka and Dumakaregnak being the Champion of the Heart-That-Contains-Him.
The Battle of Red Mountain was some deep metaphysical shit.
>>
>>46280540
The orcs seem to think so, and they're the only ones telling everyone that Trinimac was turned into the daedra poop known as Malacath.

Not really.
>>
>>46280784
I found a thing on r/teslore about it. I don't really like r/teslore, and I think this could've been explained a lot more simply, but thinking about it makes sense. It would explain why the Orcs are considered such great craftsmen more than them being changed Altmer.

To be fair, it's not too bad looking up until that helmet. And there are mods for that.

As for me, I like the Netch Leather and Chitin helmets. Something about the googles is pleasantly advanced for a fairly medieval setting, and does bring to mind the ashy setting they'd be used in.

Yeah, I know that feel. Morrowind ebony hit the perfect balance of badass and elegant, and then it just kind of went downhill from there. In all fairness though, everything in Oblivion was awful looking.

I'm pretty sure Eat the Dreamer, and Skeleton Man's Interview were the two big ones, but the very fact that the dynamic shows up over and over in Elder Scrolls lore, and that we know explicitly that reality is subgradient, makes it a very reasonable conclusion to draw, especially considering the incredible significance of Auri-El, Trinimac, and Lorkhan's interactions at Convention.
>>
how far are you in ESO, trainwiz (and other anons in this thread who actually play it)?
>last boss in the mages guild questline
>mfw it's just a straight up fight, no serious gimmicks
>mfw boss has huge health bar but i'm keeping pace
>mfw i beat him, but quest bugs and doesn't change him to non-hostile
>rest of scripted sequence plays out while we're still fighting
eventually i had to restart that portion, but it's still one of the better boss encounters in the game so far.

Neither of those sources mention anything about a rebel and a king
>it a very reasonable conclusion to draw, especially considering the incredible significance of Auri-El, Trinimac, and Lorkhan's interactions at Convention
Except in this instance it has literally nothing to do with that. Dumac and Nerevar mythopoetically represent Trinimac and Boethiah at the beginning of the Chimeri exodus and the corruption of Trinimac into Malacath (hence "Dumalacath"). This event has fuck-all to do with the Enantiomorph.

Light armor was generally okay. Fur, hide, leather, scale - it all fit pretty well with the Nordic look, though I do miss chainmail from Oblivion. Elvish was nice but not the style I wanted. Most of the heavy armors were great looking.

My big problem was that since everything was toned down in some ways, I felt really out of place wearing special-looking armor. None of the NPCs were wearing even dwarven armor, let alone armor sacred to anyone's order or bonemold. There was something jarring about wearing super special armor and just going to buy some apothecary supplies.

I think the lack of pants was to make it feel a bit more dark age medieval. Tunics and robes would be more the fashion then - probably an attempt to create a bit of a contrast between Oblivion and it's more 16th century styles of clothing reminiscent of Shakespeare in some ways.

I would argue the same, but for the fact that it does little else to promote a classic fantasy aesthetic. Lots of beards (most artwork seemed to prefer cleanshaven men compared to today), horns on only two or three sets of helmets, not many bright colors, no featherhair...

>Dragonlance
my nostalgia boner won't go down.

Agreed on the weirdly schizophrenic direction Skyrim took with the armors, though. I almost wonder if the lioncloths weren't an intentional departure from the clothes that were all over Oblivion.
>>
>>46284603
I argued in an earlier post that Oblivion clothes were reminiscent of Shakespeare and similar designs, so they might have meant to contrast a land strongly tied to its ancient traditions and in a 'dark age' after the fall of an Empire, to the earlier cosmopolitan, civilized, and overall peaceful Cyrodiil.

Or maybe it's because barbarians aren't supposed to wear pants. Or to show improvements in graphics and game design - more realistic movement of clothing and the ability to show off legs with clothes. I dunno.

>>
>>46260363

>>
>>46285794
It's a Skyrim concept art. No idea what it was actually going to be, and I can honestly see why they dropped it.
>>
>>46260363
Skyrim feels so flat. The concept art looks much better in that regard.
>>
>>46285985
How so?
There were quite a few flat plains(whiterun, riften woods, the swamps) but there was equally much mountains, mountainsides, hills and crevices(reach, upper skyrim, the area between riften and falkreath)
>>
>>46286030
Paths in skyrim usually aren't in the flat areas, so unless you're making a straight line from place to place, you're trekking around hills and mountains to get anywhere.
Due to this, you can't appreciate the mountains, as they're all you see. No contrast unless you go out of your way.

Oh, it's purely subjective, but I guess the root of it is that I really wanted it to be steeper.
Think Norwegian fjords.
Sky-Rim always felt to me like it would be a very mountainous, very vertical place. Where the landscape cut dramatically from deep valleys to high mountaintops, and that vertical expanse would be just as important as other dimensions.
The parts of the coast and part of the Reach felt alright, I just guess I wanted a lot more of that.
>>
>>46286180
>expecting this from a studio that cut the levitation because they didn't want to deal with verticality in their design.
>>
what would be your dream game crossover? (Just dream and don't even think about how it wouldn't be possible)

Mine would be with dark souls
>elder scrolls scope, scale and lore
>Dat combat system
>Verticality for centuries
>you see something in the distance you like?
>chances are its got a huge dungeon with unforgiving bosses
>all the bosses have le deepest lore
It'd probably have dark souls atmosphere aka dark, gloomy and depressing but i'd tolerate it
>>
>>46285181
Ancient Greeks called people wearing pants , shoes and speaking a language they couldn't understand Barbarians
>>
>>46286354
No crossover. Just a good execution

Pre-Skyrim TES was already perfect on a conceptual level as far as I care
>the engine and movement system make you feel like you have the same technical freedom of movement as in an fps
>shallow action/minigame gameplay elements on top of a system ultimately governed by RPG stats, to give the player a feeling that his skills matter a bit but not too much. improves the "in control" feeling while remaining solidly in rpg territory
>perfect attribute/skill system
>a world that moves on its own; you interact with it rather than it existing to make you into the hero

Oblivion was flawed to the point it's unplayable without mods, but man did it make the future look bright. Then we got Skyrim instead
>>
>>46286208
At least Fallout 4 is the most "vertical" game they've made in a while. So maybe, just maybe.
>>
>>46286525
