They legitimately don't like each other, it's not a "hatefuck" at all since that implies they "enjoy" running into one another outside of work.

Read "Hunting Dog's Fangs", not only is it a Momiji-exclusive doujin, but it's one that really goes a long way to portray the Momiji/Aya relationship.

Ran and Yukari are youkai, thus they eat human flesh.

Also, Yukari loves fucking with people, and Ran is a kitsune.

>>
>>46221160
>Kappa

>>
>>46221103
I don't think most of them are particularly psycho (although some are), although I think "canonically" (for what passes as canon in Touhou) all the yokai are supposed to have to eat human flesh. That's mostly ignored except for some (vampires obviously drink blood since that's a pretty big part of being a vampire, and Rumia mentions in one game that she eats people so that's part of her characterisation).
>>
>>46221195
>Ran and Yukari are youkai, thus they eat human flesh.

Tengu are youkai as well, and they're not particularly prone to hunting down humans.

Plus Ran is a Kitsune, not a Kumiho, the difference is in their habit for eating human flesh.
>>

>If you die to a fairy, that's your prerogative for allowing something that even the skinniest nerd could beat up.

>although I think "canonically" (for what passes as canon in Touhou) all the yokai are supposed to have to eat human flesh

I've been led to believe they "prefer" the taste of human flesh above all others, but there's plenty of cases where they seem to eat and enjoy other stuff.
>>
>>46221220

Nah, in touhou all youkai eat human flesh, not as their main diet for the vast majority, but they have to eat it.

They usually settle for just kidnapping depressed people from the outside world for it, or people stupid enough to wander into their territory.
>>
>>46221253

IIRC It's a health thing, they have to eat human flesh, much like they exist off of the fear and belief of humans in general, before Gensokyo made that a moot point.
>>
>>46221221

That's utter bs.

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense lists faires as having a low threat level.

Only those who can win the Darwin award die to faires.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Perfect_Memento_in_Strict_Sense/Fairy
>>
>>46221315

Fairies have a "Low" threat level.

Humans don't even have a threat level, unless they got some mystical bullfuck backing them.

Doesn't matter how strong a human is when a spear of ice runs through their cranium because they upset the dumb fairy.
>>
>>46221337
>Humans don't even have a threat level, unless they got some mystical bullfuck backing them.

The average Human in Gensokyo is stronger than the average Youkai.

This is canon.
>>
>>46221364

Is it considering those dumb item spirits as the average?
>>
>>46221337

Unless you are planning on arguing against *WRITTEN* canon, I don't see your point.

They are stupid and don't have the same frame of mind as everyone else when it comes to life and death, this does not make them malicious.

To suggest that they are is wrong.

>>46221385

Below, actually.

They are extremely weak.
>>
>>46221385

>Today, the normal Gensokyo human is probably a little more powerful than the average youkai, but the population of youkai greatly outnumbers humans. Most humans live in the Human Village, but a few live in other notable locations.

What passes for the "average" Youkai is your bog-standard mooks that often get violently obliterated by Reimu in a manga, the named Youkai are by their nature exceptional and, unless noted otherwise, considered stronger than the average.

The human flesh thing is awkward because of this passage:

>Yukari mentions to herself that "youkai may attack humans but do not eat them recklessly. Humans from the town are generally not for their eating under the contract" in Cage in Lunatic Runagate Chapter 5, showing the contract (or at least, a contract) extends to all youkai and prevents consumption, not attacking.

Outsiders are good to eat unless they make it to Hakurei Shrine or the Human Village, which means if any of us somehow wind up in Gensokyo and meet a cute girl with a funny hat, you're probably gonna get ate.

>>
>>46221484
Which brings into question why humans have to stay in that one(?) village all the time (unless that's part of the contract?) since any youkai self-aware enough to gain a level of power sufficient to pose a threat to the average human would also be sufficiently sentient to follow the contract.

Or is the population of humans in the village so little that none of them have the ability or inclination to strike out from time to time?

A man is far, /far/ stronger than your average fairy. For perspective, if reasonably agitated, an adult human can lift up a Chevrolet Camaro; he can use the same amount of force to quite literally pull a fairy apart the way a bear can swat off a person's head.

Cirno is special in that she has enough strength to reasonably fight off humans (in the same way that humans that can fight off youkai are special) with her ice ailities, but if one of them closes the distance she can rather quickly be overpowered. Lesser fairies can typically do little more than bruise a human with their danmaku or wishfully set them on fire if they're lucky enough to have that ability; it's safer to use their wings to fly away so they can't be struck.

The listing for humans in Memento in Strict Sense has their threat level set to "varied" for a good reason, because "Outsider Worlder" can mean anything from your average neet to the soldiers that fought off the Lunarians to Sumiko and Sanae to a professional wrestler.
>>
All this thread has managed to do is make me want to beat down a fairy with a baseball bat.
>>
>>46221416
Yup. Cirno being "the strongest" is treated as a joke, but she actually is far stronger than just about any other fairy. She's an actual stage boss (admittedly a weak one in one of the early stages), while the normal fairies are just mooks. Same goes for the other named characters, who are either playble characters or stage bosses (minibosses in some cases, but still more powerful than random mooks).
>>
>>46222097
What about the mid-stage 5/6 death fairies? Where the hell do they come from?
>>
>>46222150
Ummm....from Hell?
>>
>>46221900
I think it's probably part of the contract they have with the yokai (they get to live in Gensokyo and the yokai won't eat them, but they have to live in the one human village set aside for them). They probably don't have a pretty big population, anyway.

>>46221103
>>46221690
I rather like the idea that all the cute girls in funny hats are actually man-eating monsters. While usually kind of ignored, it does allow for a pretty interesting spin on things if you would play it for horror or for moral dissonance (ie. they yokai may be perfectly nice and civil with each other, and often even with humans, but at the same time don't consider killing and eating humans any more morally wrong than humans consider butchering an animal for meat).

That could potentially make for a pretty interesting setting to set a game in, either playing as the yokai or as humans.
>>
>>46222060
>>46222150

Are the Lunarians/Moon Rabbits overestimated in strength? Surely if fairies and humans are beating them tactically they must be doing something terribly wrong with that advanced magic and technology of theirs.
>>
What about Eientei? That place doesn't look that dangerous to humans. At worst you'll get (lethally?) trolled by Tewi.
>>
>>46222237

Well, the strongest person on the Lunarian's side is basically "Yukari Yakumo+some other stuff."
>>
>>46222308

Seems like they're intentionally letting their peers lose then. Maybe all the strong Lunarians have an agenda of some sort that requires the moon to become impure from all the mortals mucking it up, therefore giving them an excuse to invade and annex Gensokyo?
>>
>>46222237
Well was more like the Lunarians didn't want to touch the fairies cause they were icky. Basically Junko just infested the moon with ants to get them to be all "fuck this, we're moving".

In this case the fairies were more like really annoying pests.
>>
>>46222237
Lunarian firepower is limited by their unwillingness to get their hands dirty.

Fairies beat them tactically because they're a source of impurity that can't be permanently killed. They're literally an incurable plague on the moon, even if the individual fairy wouldn't last a second against Lunarian technology.

Neil Armstrong beat the Lunarians because he's motherfucking Neil Armstrong.

Cirno once tried to tame/defeat a daidarabotchi because she worried that she's not as strong on her own as she likes to claim she is, and she's civil enough that when she isn't wandering around the woods looking to train and get stronger, she runs a shaved ice stand.

Seriously though, M&M and the Hero System can both accurately emulate any power. Both are effect-based point-models: i.e you buy a Damage Dealer with the Fire modifier to represent a fireball, a phoenix fire aura or the power of fusion.

There was a forum (The Atomic Think Tank) with more than several hundred M&M character sheets for every sources and powerlevel imaginable, from low-level brawl into full-on galactic tier. Fun read if you're into those kind of things.

Cirno goes out of her way not to kill fellow fairies, even knowing that they can revive. She's probably one of the least dangerous non-human Touhous to meet directly unless you do something to anger or threaten her.

"If humans were to fight her gracefully, it would seem that the weapon would become frozen and it wouldn't be possible to win to begin with, but if we were to just run away, if we poke at the point that she is an idiot, we are able to run away immediately, since she is not able to answer even simple riddles."

Touhou is actually a mental hospital in Meiji era Japan who only admits females as their patients.

The staff of the clinic is all-male and appears faceless, because they are generic in all regards compared to the female patients, who are kleptomaniacs, sadists and alcoholics and believe to be fairies, youkai, tengu and other fantasy creatures.

Enjoy.

>>46222235
There are some fan written stories that deal with that aspect of the setting - some are pretty morbidly fascinating. The one where Yukari starts a "human ration" program comes to mind. The same guy also wrote one about Sanae consuming human flesh to become a proper youkai. His stuff is quite grotesque.

But with regards to setting proper, it's all fairly well confirmed at this point that the youkai do not actually eat people who live there. It's all a big facade to maintain the youkai's "reason for being" - youkai are spiritual beings born from human fears and such, and need that to survive. So the human population of Gensokyo is manipulated into remaining fearful and marginalized in order to perpetuate the status quo that enables youkai to thrive. Danmaku duels are an extension of this system - they allow youkai to appear malicious and frightening without threatening actual harm. Gensokyo is something like a zoo - humans are the captive animals, cared for and protected but ultimately serving the needs of the youkai.

This is also why the biggest criminal in Gensokyo is Seija. Her goal is disruption of the status quo, which the youkai cannot permit.

It us really easy, as there is a Time Manipulation effect IIRC. Emulating stands would be slightly more difficult, as there would probably several ways to create one.

According to some versions the humans the yokai eat are supposed to be people who commit suicide in the real world (hence the meme with "going to Gensokoy" under a picture of a noose or a guy pointing a gun at his head). I suppose if you're planning on dying anyway, might as well die eaten by a cute loli with a funny hat.
Plus dying in Gensokyo probably has a decent chanse of you coming back as a ghost or something, given how much supernatural entities they have running around the place.

>But with regards to setting proper, it's all fairly well confirmed at this point that the youkai do not actually eat people who live there
There are still some newborn or nonsentient youkai who eat humans because they don't know any better, but other youkai try to stop them if they find out.

Also it's implied that the village used to dispose of corpses by giving them to youkai to eat, but that this has become less common.

It's a little more subtle than that. Humans that don't follow the rules are pretty much fair game. This includes humans from the outside, or humans who do something stupid, or mess with the wrong people.

Ultimately, it is the survival of the entire human village that is important. As long as it is not jeopardized, individual can be eaten times to times. This is why there is so much tension between the Hakurei shrine, the human village, and the youkai. The Hakurei shrine nominally protects the human village, but often frets with some youkai. Reimu is constantly on the defensive: she can't do too much against the power struggle of Gensokyo, but neither can she do too little. People still get eaten: there would be no fear if it wasn't the case. You just don't risk much if you don't do something stupid.

Frankly, the equilibrium attained in Gensokyo only works because there is a large number of very powerful people actively working together to maintain it.

Makes sense as it's supposed to an area separated from the rest of the world by a magical barrier to create a place for the yokai to live in. It's not a "natural" system and only keeps functioning because there are several powerful being keeping it stable. If the human village is effectively a "zoo" as one anon mentioned, Gensokyo itself is effectively a yokai "preserve".

Its more than a preserve, snippets in the official character books and manga like Wild & Horned Hermit seem to imply Yukari spearheaded the creation of the place not only to preserve Youkai but to change them to better survive the absence of their "meaning".

Youkai, like all supernatural things, basically exist as explanations for man's ignorance of certain phenomena. Bust as mundane explanations for the concepts that created them came about with advances in human science and society the youkai ran a very high risk of going extinct. But even in Gensokyo they aren't totally safe so Yukari seems to be playing the long game: sequester them in a place apart from the real world and ween them off their definition by human fears. Slowly turning them into "individuals" with quirks based on what they are than living concepts, making them more "real" and "stable".

Because when people learn that the reason bodies left in a river or a lake bloat up and expel their viscera is because of methane buildup during decomposition and not turtle-people the concept of a kappa quickly starts to die off. But if that concept manifests as a loli inventor of knickknacks it becomes increasingly detached from needing to exist to explain bloated corpses and is less vulnerable to disappearance. Gensokyo is a crucible to protect the "things" that go bump in the night long enough for them to turn into "beings" that won't go poof if you turn the lights on.

Or something like that. . . far be it from me to claim to understand the machinations of Yog Sothoth in a frilly dress

The only human we know of who's broken the rules is the sage who wanted to become a youkai and live forever. He managed to work his way into becoming a vengeful spirit type thing, so Reimu vaporized him. Because damn uppity human didn't know his place.

Life in Gensokyo would suck. Not because you're going to get eaten - it would suck in the way living as a medieval peasant would suck. No future beyond the same thing your family has done for generations, laboring to support a system you probably don't even understand.

I suppose that's the explanation why they all look like lolis in funny hats as well? Maybe they're moving to live off of human waifuing instead of fear. The transition isn't fully complete yet, so while they look like cute lolis they still eat people.

Those are just the ones Zun cares to write about (and the ones that most of his audience wants to hear about). There are some in the manga that don't look like little girls. No one important except for Rinnosuke, of course, but they exist.

It's also been said that danmaku is mostly popular with women, which is silly, but there you go.
>>
>>46226914
I'd consider Gap-Moe to be more for stuff like "tough-looking girl who loves cute things" or "high-class girl who laughs at crude jokes", not "cute girl who fucking eats you". It's all about having some character trait or personality flaw that seems to go against your "type" and personality, and while eating people is indeed not a typical cute loli trait, that's a bit more...serious then your typical Gap-Moe flaw.
>>
>>46226550

>>
>>46227092
It's really more about the, well, gap-moe. The term literally refers to character being considered more "moe" because they have some trait that is out of place for their character type.

It makes more sense when you remember how heavily "typecasted" anime and manga characters tend to be. Almost every character tend to fall into some common archetype, often to the point where you can recognise from a single image what type of character they're supposed to be. Gap-Moe is about breaking the expectations by giving a character a trait that doesn't match their archetype.
>>
>>46227327
>It makes more sense when you remember how heavily "typecasted" anime and manga characters tend to be.
Yes, this is certainly a flaw. Gap moe is just moving from first-order archetypes to second-order ones: rich girls with 'relatable' low-class habits, smart girls without common sense, cool guys with soft sides. That's why I find the term distasteful.

Yeah, now that I think of it, there's a ton of "gap-moe" traits that are so common they're effectively archetypes on their own right. Tough character who loves cute things, refined girl who'se actually a pervert, thin girl with a huge appetite, to name a few. Soon they'll have to come up with "double-gap-moe" traits because the original traits have just become standard traits for that character type.

After all, if all you had to do to obtain eternal life was work towards it, why would someone like Hieda no Are pursue the laborious path of reincarnation, slaving his soul to the Yama? Magic certainly wasn't super common in the myths that these figures are from. There most be some sort of limiting factor.

Well, Marisa was able to learn it, though it seems to have caused problems with her family.

Rinnosuke as well, though he's of indeterminate age due to being a half-youkai.

Kosuzu has a library in the village which has magical tomes.

And I'd think that if spellcards are a thing, that it should be possible for villagers to at least learn something basic? They're descended from youkai hunters, so there may be family traditions and teachings.

The Taoists would probably teach their magic as well.

As for the eternal life deal... it may just be that learning the two Magician spells is extremely difficult, or wasn't known when Akyu started her reincarnation cycle.

Now, with her lifespan cut so short, I'd guess there's no way for her to actually learn the magic either.

I don't think Rinnosuke actually knows magic. He just has his weird innate ability and reads lots of books. Also, he's half youkai.

Kosuzu again just has a weird innate ability. Only magic she ever does is the fortune telling thing. She doesn't even seem particularly interested in learning magic, just sperging over youkai books.

I've always gotten the feeling that the Taoists were more of a pyramid scheme than anything. Their leader is a politician through and through, which should tell you all you need to know about his trustiworthiness.

Marisa is the only real human magician I know of. Everyone else is either a shrine maiden or someone who won the genetic (well, who knows if it's genetic, but you get my meaning) lottery Is that because most people lack the desire? The opportunity? The ability?

I'll also note that supernatural abilities by birth are not limited to Gensokyo - the sealing club girls and the psychic managed it in the outside world.

>Kosuzu again just has a weird innate ability. Only magic she ever does is the fortune telling thing. She doesn't even seem particularly interested in learning magic, just sperging over youkai books.

Sure, more that she's a source of magic knowledge because of her books.

My bet is a strong social resistance in the village, but with youkai and humans becoming closer - to the point that known youkai will come in to buy things (not always with appropriate currency) - that seems as though it wouldn't be as big an obstacle anymore.

There are already youkai who come to the village to buy things. PMiSS mentions it in a few places - they mostly do it at night.

Basically it's a system of magic put in place to put everyone on equal ground and make sure that they don't cause too much collateral damage.

As for HOW it works, it's vague beyond that everyone carries physical spell cards with them that describe the attacks.
>>
>>46230899
It works the same as magic does in conventional fantasy settings. People have magical power that they use to shoot magic out in the form of laser beams or fireballs or what have you.

>I remember its something about magic/spirit power being used to simulate beauty-- As proof that they're not fighting.
I think it's more that danmaku battles eschew the most effective attacks in favour of stylish ones, the idea being it's more civilized that way. It's just a justification for why so many attacks seem to be more flashy than effective at actually killing the player.

Danmaku is a game mechanic. The only canon information about it is that it's a specifically nonlethal form of conflict resolution where beauty is valued more highly than ruthless effectiveness.

It doesn't seem like there's any reason a Touhou character couldn't turn up the power on their lasers and actually roast someone.
>>
>>46231253
There is a reason why they don't just kill each other with impossible-to-dodge patterns: Reimu and everyone else beholden to the rules will come down on your ass and exterminate you for breaking a covenant.

>It doesn't seem like there's any reason a Touhou character couldn't turn up the power on their lasers and actually roast someone.
It's against the rules. 2hus are too powerful to wantonly go around killing each other. It also allows for confrontation between two parties drastically different in power levels.
>>

The spell card system is pretty recent though - it's only been around since the SDM showed up in Gensokyo.

Because Gensokyo relies a lot on unwritten rules, but Remilia is a KY gaijin who thought that meant she could do whatever she wanted. She's the only power player who needs an actual contract to tell her what she can and can't do, and even then she broke it in EoSD.

The people who went after her purportedly used undodgeable cards, as she was a rebel, and therefore outside the protection of the spellcard rules, but Amanojaku is technically clearable without the use of items.

Yeah but you forgot that every human in Gensokyo has some King of power. Marisa and Reimu can use magic, the one half yokai guy can understand what anything is/used for. There's also the librarian (in the human village) that can read any language.
>>
>>46235628
That doesn't mean every human in Gensokyo has a magic power.

It's worth noting though that some ancient bit of setting notes mentions that Gensokyo's original human population was a group of hard-boiled demon hunters, who purportedly sealed off Gensokyo (of course, it was an inside job by the youkai all along). So it might be possible that an average human villager has enough spiritual power to defend themselves against low-tier youkai. Whether this extends to danmaku battle is another thing entirely.

It might give you the minimum gen, since if she's 500 years old she obviously can't be from a generation first sired less than 500 years ago.
However, that won't establisher her maximum generation (beyond her obviously not being Antediluvian or Methusalah), as there's nothing stopping, say, a gen 4 vampire from siring a vampire right now, giving you a gen 5 vampire who was only recently sired.

She is a bridge princess, with power to make other people jealous. A japanese version of the western bridge trolls.

Basically she quards and lives alone on or at a bridge leading to hell. Due to living alone there and not really having freedom, she often feels jealous about the people capable of passing by.

Being cursed, can be prevented by giving her offerings.

Yuugi is often depicted as being friends with her.

Parsee is a hashihime, which is a fucking terrifying yokai. The following is taken from one of the more well-known stories about it:

"The woman returned to the capitol city and made her preparations. She found a secluded spot where she could work her magic. First, she twisted the long strands of her hair into five horns. Then she ground cinnabar for her face and vermillion for her body until she was as bright red as an oni of legend. Finally, she crowned her head with a three-pronged trivet, and set in it three torches of burning pine. In her teeth she clenched two further torches.

Her preparations complete, she ran south down Yamato-oojidori, torches blazing in the deep night, skin bright red and with an iron crown resting on her eyebrows. Her every aspect was that of an oni, and all who saw her collapsed, dying of terror at the manifested horror they had seen. At the end of her path was the Kawase river, where the lady dutifully sank beneath its waters. As promised by the Kami of Kifune, after 21 days she transformed in living body into an oni, the dread Bridge Princess called Hashihime.

In this way the Hashihime took her revenge on the man who was the target of her jealousy, and all of his relatives above and below. Her wrath knew no boundaries. When she slew men, she appeared as a woman. When she slew women, she appeared as a man. All in the town were a’ feared of her, and during the Hour of the Monkey none dared leave their dwelling."

Traditionally, a hashihime is a still-living oni.

The still-living part is important, since in Japanese mythology (and in a lot of others, to be honest) death has a powerful transformative aspect. Lots of stories have a post-death revenge, Japanese folklore has the 'onryo' which is a vengeful spirit come back from the grave to punish it's offender.

But the hashihime never died. She went straight from human to demon without bothering to pass GO or collect $200, which makes her both more unnatural and more terrifying.
