Phantasmal image isn't strictly better though, they tried to make it with upside and downside it just turned out the upside was greater

Phyrexian metamorph has broken Phyrexian mana making it strong

Other than those two, which are obviously better than basically any other clone (clever impersonator honorable mention), this new blue green clone is one of the better clones if only because you're paying the same cmc but getting uncounterable

Clones are basically only good in edh anyway so idk why you're complaining that they didn't make a new clone that was not only uncounterable but lower cmc than a normal clone

I think people underestimate how much the +1/+1 add to that card. For 2GU, you get a copy of the best thing on the battlefield: that's a typical clone, it does a great job of stabilizing the board, it's always been decent-to-playable, we're used to that. But for 3GU, you get a bigger copy of the biggest thing on the battlefield. You have board advantage. You're now able to eat in combat whatever that thing you copied is. And that sounds like a big deal. You're not reaching parity, you're doing better.

That has to be worth the mana cost.

I don't know if you're the anon arguing that this card should have costed XGU but I'm going to reply as if you are. You completely misunderstand why clone is a bad card in your favorite formats. It isn't because of the cost, it's because of the effect. You don't want to be playing clones in any format in which you could go multiple games without ever seeing a creature on your opponent's side of the table. Or, even if they do have creatures, you never get to untap after they drop it.

You want an effect that isn't designed for Modern or Legacy to be so ridiculously undercosted it manages to see play there despite the fact it's not a good fit by nature. Without considerations for any other formats. Do you have any idea what that card would be like at XGU in Limited, EDH and casual?

To reiterate, Clone is a fairly costed card, and it would be fucking retarded to undercost it so much it starts seeing play in formats in which that effect is generally bad.

It seems as though the the skaab mechanic of using dead bodies by exiling them from the yard has been replaced with discarding any card. Which is sad, but I can see it work thematically sometimes.
