I have a player who wants to use http://www.naturalcrit.com/homebrew/share/V1nPgkChx to make a were-cat. It seems pretty balanced as far as these things go and decent handling of a were.

I am running Curse of Strahd and she has been bitten before this. I am planning on running Death House and I thought it would be interesting to have her lose control the first time of her change. How would you handle this? Anyone with experience of CoS have an idea of where this change should best take place? I thought it might be good and horror-y to have it interrupt a long rest.
>>
Does the mega link contain the actual curse of Strahd book? Cant seems to find it there, only maps of the area.
>>
So how do I build a space-faring craft by myself (with maybe the help of another wizard) at relatively low level?

>>46141155
>casting grease on opponent's shoes
>>
Invisibility. An hour of screwing with people so long as I don't attack or cast spells
>>
>>46141127
Anything I can fluff to be body horror or tentacles. Bonus points for any spell which can be fluffed as body horror AND tentacles.
>>
Wizard finished! That's all of the classes done, including all SCAG options. I went back and edited some of the earlier ones I had done for consistency.

Please let me know if you catch any errors.
>>
>>46141213
some people were scanning pages from it, did we ever compile it all into a mega link?
>>
>>46141155
For non-combat purposes, Disguise Self is an amazing spell. For only 1 level in Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard or Cleric, you can fashion the perfect disguise for no material cost.

Guards looking for you? Sorry, guvnah, i'm just a poor cockney peasant, I aint seen no magician.

Need to be somewhere you shouldn't? Move along citizen, nothing to see here, just a guard doing guardy things.

It's a pretty OP spell as long as you are an average-sized character and you don't give anyone reason to suspect you.
>>
>>46141341
didn't realise it was a question in the post, ignore reply to user.
>>
>>46141212
Furfag shit is a warning sign. Don't open the floodgates to the magical realm.

Also, as it has been said on here, CoS is the time to be spooked by badass horror creatures, not to be a badass horror creature
>>
>>46141254
pls iterate the version numbers (1.5a or whatever) so we know which ones have change from when we downloaded them
>>
>>46141127
My favorite spell is definitely Polymorph (or, you know, True Polymorph if you're capable of casting it instead).
It can load on a lot of buffer health like a Moon Druid while also potentially boosting a party member's attack power. It can also be used directly on an enemy; you can turn them into a harmless creature and capture them. Sure, if you "kill" them, they just transform back. You know that. I know that. The NPC probably doesn't know that. Toying with someone you just turned into a frog or spider or something is a great way to make them fear you. Then, you just cancel the spell & they believe it was an act of mercy that you spared them. It also just has so much versatility. Need to climb up a wall? Turn your fighter into a giant spider and ride him up the cliff. Don't have a boat when you need one? Turn your rogue into a giant crocodile & ride him across the water. There's also just satisfying about turning a party member into a mount to ride them into battle to gain the associated bonuses (With the Mounted Combatant Feat, you'll get advantage on pretty much every melee attack you ever try to do).
>>
>>46141439
I am reserving version changes on the pages themselves for very major changes, as that is nearly 50 pdfs I would need to open and edit a single number on. I will probably just put a text file on the mega with a title that indicates the last update, and inside detailing a changelog.

Minor Illusion. I have a crazy DM who lets me get away with anything with it.
Hunger of Hadar for fluff.
>>
how do you guys feel about cliffhangers?

Due to schedule conflicts, I had to cut my last session short right after the party ran into a dragon. It only got off one breath weapon use before we had to call it for the day.

Yeah, it builds tension, but our next session will be super lopsided as a result.

Misty Step, easily. Being able to get past obstacles is often useful and the mobility from getting what is basically a Disengage + Dash from a bonus action is great. It's just a shame you can't cast non-cantrip spells in the same turn as it, at least not RAW.

Forever DM so I haven't ever cast a fucking spell yet other than from enemies.

That said, I dig the idea of being a utility/combat-altering character, so Minor Illusion sounds like it would have a lot of applications

>illusory intruder running through a room to draw guards away
>illusory voice screaming for help from elsewhere in the castle
>illusory archers on the walls so the enemy thinks they're outnumbered
>illusory fire to block off a corridor

The only limit seems to be how much bullshit your DM is willing to put up with

One time, my party went to Hell. Using a variant rule, they had to roll to see if their alignments would temporarily switch to lawful evil. Well, that happened to the rogue. The paladin, clever as he is, locked a "prevents your alignment from changing with dangerous electroshocks" collar on the rogue AFTER this happened. Breaking the collar would make it explode. At one point, the paladin kidnapped the rogue & took away the rogue's evil device that he received from the big bag. Once they beat the big bad, the paladin smashed the collar, killing the rogue.

Just one Hobgob? Yeah, easily. It may have 18 AC with the chain mail, but with a lowly 11 HP, a magic missile or two can kill it. Actually, I'm gonna say that a magic missile is enough for the wizard to solo it, with favorable enough rolls.

>>
>>46144061
I was thinking of having the pics hired to deal with a strangely well organised tribe of goblins.

The hobgoblin turns out to have been sent to destabilise the area before the legion arrives.

Maybe they could fight four or so goblins before once they've won the hobgoblin comes to investigate with his two goblin bodyguards, the pcs are a little bit worn out but can still probably win.
>>
>>46144226
Bard is quite efficient at it.

COS SCAN WHEN
>>
>>46144234
Yeah, that seems fair. At such low levels, the attack rolls have a major impact. I mean, a regular goblin is likely to die in one hit if that hit lands. The same goes for the players if they are subjected to the hobgoblin's Martial Advantage. It might down someone, but if they play their cards right, it shouldn't be too dangerous.
>>
>>46144179
Yeah, I've been looking at less frequently fanboyed older settings for inspiration (ok, to steal shit from) and was just curious if anyone still had an opinion on any of them.

>living sphere of fucking annihilation
>>
>>46144259
Honestly the most interesting part of bard as a healslut is the song of rest which is a pretty great post fight healing boost.

Combined with Healing Word (which is great as Bard doesn't have a lot of bonus actions) and Lesser Restoration and you're pretty much set. The only disappointment imo is the fact that they get Mass Cure instead of Mass Healing Word.

Also Bard gets 3/4 of the Druid's special spells plus some of their own uniques.
>>
>>46144226
If your reasoning is lore rather than mechanics, might I suggest a cleric to something evil like Lolth. Lolth is technically also a demon lord, so that could be considered a demonic healer, kinda.
Druid has better potential as a tank. You could be some kinda tanky, healing bear. Bard has more versatility, though.
>>
>>46144403
Yeah, b/c pronouns, I thought the gobs were helping the party at first. But one or two KOs shouldn't cause a party wipe, at least not if they're properly prepared. Plus, it does have to HIT with that attack.
>>
>>46144428
Bards can steal Aura of Vitality from paladins (as early as 6th level for lore bards), which lets you heal 2d6 hit points to a creature as a bonus action for 1 minute. Out of combat that 's 20d6 healing for a 3rd-level slot.
>>
>>46144563
That's actually retarded.
>>
>>46144169
Nothing can see inside Hunger of Hadar. It doesn't matter if you have Devil's Sight; it's not Darkness.
>>
>>46143780
If they take the trapdoor to the wolf's den (which they should) there is only like 2 doors they need to go through.
>>
>>46144698
To elaborate:
If you have a way of acquiring tremorsense or blindsense you can, but even truesight won't work.
>>
I have an idea for a character, but I'm not sure how it would work. I want to play a Pact of the Chain Great Old Ones Warlock, eventually multiclassing into War Cleric, but here's the catch: He's blind.

Now, I figured I'd stat this by just having him be permanently afflicted by the Blind status (disadvantage to hit and enemies have advantage to hit me), and have him use his familiar as a sort of seeing eye dog, perceiving through its senses using Voice of the Chain Master, suffering the full effects of Blindness once the familiar is gone.

But, I have to wonder, how would this affect spells that say "target an area within X number of feet that you can see?" Would my warlock just not be able to cast such spells? Should enemies still have advantage to hit me because of Blindness even when I'm seeing through the eyes of my familiar?
>>
>>46144710
Yeah exactly. They can just ditch the slow mound and book it to the door at lv 1, no probelmo.

Do all the doors even turn evil or only the front entrance?
>>
>>46144839
Other blind creatures develop blindsense. I think blindsense 30 feet (blind beyond that radius) for you works, and then once you have Voice of the Chain master you can see through its eyes.

>CoS is the time to be spooked by badass horror creatures
If you can find a DM that's actually capable of making their game anything even close to spooky horror, you hold on to them. You hold on to them and you never let go.

The closest any DM I've ever had has gotten to horror is the horrible B movies that turn out to be hilarious because they're trying so damn hard to be scary.

You mean someone who always has a way to get out of a bad situation?
Wizard. You can do all kinds of bullshit to escape everything. Misty step, dimension door, shield, clone, contingency, glyph of warding, Drawmij's instant summons... you can turn yourself into a videogame character, basically.
>>
>>46144931
The Arcane Trickster is a Rogue sub-class now. If it doesn't float your boat for whatever reason you'd likely have to settle for Wizard or Bard.
>>
Has anyone tried modding 5e to accomodate different types of fantasy games? How did it go? I'm trying to fix it up to run Lord of the Rings style fantasy, with just a touch more common spellcasters. It's been a bitch though.
>>

>>
>>46145053
Arcane trickster is "mage hand" the class, though.
If they didn't have less spells known than a sorcerer and only choose from 2 schools they might be better, but I just think they're rubbish. Might as well just take magic initiate for a scag cantrip of your choice and minor illusion.
>>46145085
most spellcasters probably not.
Gishes get some pretty nice bonuses out of them, though. Paladin and rangers get access to having cantrips at all, which is nice.
>>
>>46145085
It gets you cantrips that might be outside of your normal pool. For certain casters, that can be a huge help but perhaps not worth the Feat. I think it can be great for non-casters because they don't have anything better to concentrate on; they can pick up Bless or something.
>>
>>46143947
Yes, especially if you remember that goblins might be under the hobgoblin's command, but they will suck at following its orders. That could actually help make the encounter less boring, just have the hobgoblin act like a long-suffering commander who's in charge of a squad of complete idiots. He'll be constantly shouting commands based on sound strategy, and all the goblins just either ignore him or misunderstand his orders.

Could turn a boring old "kill these bags of meat" encounter into something pretty fun and entertaining. Throw more goblins than you normally would if you do this, though, to account for how easy it'll be to deal with them when they're played as incompetent.

The internet is your friend. There will always be someone more obsessed who's already done a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
>>
>>46145206
I never really thought of that. That sounds dangerous, though. I mean, an extra 1d6 on each of a Flurry of Blows is quite a bit.
>>
>>46145245
Consider a decent Con and Dex, but go Lore and play a full spellcaster.
Grab Eldritch Blast, it's the best cantrip in the game.
>>
>>46145178
Mage Armor Barbarian?
>>
>>46145332
Well, by level 5 they can hit 4 times in one turn, each hit doing either 1d6 or 1d8. Add an extra 1d6 on each hit and it's going to hurt.
Might even be worth a Warlock dip to cast it every short rest.

Why? You know Unarmed Defense and Mage Armor don't stack, right? They're each a separate calculation method, it's "13+Dex," or "10+Dex.+Con.", not "13+Dex.+Con."

1 level rogue= 1d6 sneak attack
1 level warlock= hex
5 levels of monk= 1d6 martial arts, and extra attack

First turn
>cast hex as a bonus action
>have advantage, or an ally within 5ft of the enemy
>hit someone with a short-sword
>1d6 sword, 1d6 hex, 1d6 sneak attack
>do it again
>3d6
>total turn damage=6d6 at level 7

I just realized sneak attack wouldn't work with flurry of blows because unarmed strike isn't finesse, so nevermind that next turn bit, though.
it would would only be an extra 1d6 on your normal attacks if you used a shortsword, which would be 10d6 instead of 12d6.

Granted, it would be insanely easy to gain advantage for that sneak attack with open palm making them prone if they fail a dex save, and hex giving disadvantage to dexterity.
or does that not work with saves? hex specifically says check, not sure how that works.

Yeah, the Sneak Attack being only once per turn is what I wasn't sure if you had noticed. Personally, I'd stay out of rogue. And then, one level of warlock grants you 2 cantrips and 1 spell slot. Meanwhile, you could just by one level away from Monk 8, which grants a Feat you could use on Magic Initiate for more-or-less the same effect as warlock while also working up the Monk ladder yet further.

If he's considering a warlock dip as shadow monk, he should really go for two-three levels. If only for the Devil's Sight. Seeing in magical darkness is a tough feat to pull off otherwise and is basically free invisibility and perma-advantage. Albeit one that inconviences the party at times.

I'd probably double the XP requirements for all characters, so it takes longer for them to level; remove all magic items completely, save for a small number of legendary (not the rarity, but the lore-wise legendary, a la the Rings of Power). So I'm planning on creating a semi-antagonist for my campaign, and I was thinking of a king, I was planning on making him an Alexander the Great/ Julius Caesar style military genius.

I'm about to run OotA with a relatively new group after we finish LMoP tomorrow.

They're about to enter Wave Echo Cave so my plan is to drop some threads leading to the Underdark through the Black Spider. Make it so that he has reason to believe that demons are going to wreck everyone's shit so he went out looking for magical artifacts and happened upon the Forge of Spells.
The map in the Wizards' Quarters is also going to be a reference to the Dawnbringer.

Once that's all wrapped up I'm getting them to roll new characters for the prisonbreak segment of OotA. If any of them die or decide they want their old character back I plan on having it so that members of the old party followed that map into the Underdark and somehow join up with the new characters.

I'm a new DM, so I just wanted to get opinions on whether trying to link campaigns like this was a good idea. As well as on the fact that I'm making them abandon their characters (if only temporarily).

I use mid combat puzzles instead. Traps are just a resource tax or a time waster in my opinion.

Can we talk about the PHB Ranger please? I started playing D&D for the first time a few months ago now and I'm still playing the same character in the same campaign.

I'm a ranger and my DM convinced me to choose the Beastmaster archetype because he thinks its really neat. Now that I'm level 7 and have a better footing on the mechanics of the game, I realize that my character is terribly underpowered and boring. My DM lets me roll my animal companion into initiative and control it myself, but still its just a dog that does a 1d6 bite - not very fun or engaging. I read through the Hunter archetype and after giving it thought I wonder why the fuck WotC didn't combine those archetypes.

My DM is pretty moody lately and upset that we're handling ourselves competently as a party - we have a sorceress who quickens spells and converts spell points into slots so she ends up pretty powerful and we have a barbarian who ended up with a grick head for a hand which has him unleashing ridiculous DPR. Furthermore, I think he's projecting his personal enviousness towards me onto my character. With this in mind, I don't think that proposing amalgamating the archetypes to him would go over well.

However, doing some browsing, I found that there was a variant Ranger released by WotC that makes the class a lot more playable for me and sounds pretty damn great. However, they only designed the first 5 levels and I have no idea if there was any official progress released. My DM is permitting me to go through with converting my ranger to this variant ranger but I guess we would have to homebrew levels 6-20, but it would be nice if there was an official complete class tree.

TL;DR: Unearthed Arcana Variant Ranger - Has WotC released levels 6-20?

Yes that's exactly the point. You potentially kill intruders with low risk of injury to yourself. Traps exist specifically to be a resource tax because taxing resources is the rules as written resort to wizards. Bonus points if the money used to build the trap comes out of the final treasure reward.
>>
>>46148395
>my players outsmarted me

>>
>>46148698

they've actually released two variants on the Ranger. Check out 'Class Design Variants' for a well-balanced lv 1-20 ranger without spellcasting but that uses magical potions and can call animals to aid them in battle.

The other Ranger variant, that one you're talking about, is from 'Ranger Options' and its pure shit. Ambuscade is completely broken and will ruin games.
>>

DM vs Player Mentality get out.

They got through an encounter with only expending one spell and taking one hit (it's initiative beat the wizards), which means I can stack monsters later in the dungeon.

Only applies if the dungeon is a purpose built dungeon and not just a place where monsters live and even then, you have to answer "but is this fun for the players?"

>but is this fun for the players?

this is a game and the purpose is to be a game. i'm pretty sure everyone knows traps exist. i'm pretty sure most people know hold person/grease/sleep etc are overpowered in encounters with sub 11 int humanoids. is it actually fun to win at everything forever with one action?

if everything went as expected all the time there would be no stories. in order to simulate a bayesian world you need true::false and false::true conditions in addition to the true::true and false::false. if you don't have situations where hold person isn't the optimal choice then you don't have a game at all.

>only applies if the dungeon is a purpose built dungeon

you can have plenty of resource taxing with hazardous environments and terrain of all types. and some don't. the fact that some don't and some do is what makes them intellectually interesting.

Nice trips.
My advice would be to sit down with one of them with whatever icebreaker you have (maybe you're on a drive, maybe you have a drink together, I don't know how NTs bond) and talk D&D with them. Talk worldbuilding, see what they want, and try to provide it in the campaign setting.

>>
>>46149111

>>
>>46149019

Ambuscade gives the character a free non-surprise round at to either Attack or Hide at the start of every encounter. So if you have surprise already on an opponent you get two free chances to attack before they can even react. If not, it doesn't matter, just use your free round to attack instead, it's effectively surprise anyhow. This incredibly, unbelievably, stupidly broken. It's dndwiki-level shit. If some shit anon had published it instead of wotc it would rightfully mocked.

Even worse though is that it's a level 1 ability, meaning every character will multi-class into that Ranger variant if they have the chance to. It's that good.

It's literally "game breaking."

my larger point is that if the only challenge is an encounter and the encounter is easy then you might as well reduce the xp because the players aren't doing anything. if you make a dungeon with traps and lots of encounters and suddenly there is greater decision making in when/if to use hold person then reaching the situation where hold person is optimal and overly good still deserves the full xp because it was balanced with all the opportunities wherewith it was not. and the rest of the argument is that the "pointless" encounters and traps exist specifically to do that and should be used. why would anyone not come to this conclusion with the two dozen monsters that are "indistinguishable" from normal items?

Ignoring the set up to the fight, it was statted as a CR 5 Gladiator for a party of four wounded level 4's, but I let them roll stats and they all got at least one 17, so at level 4 he had 20 int to hold person. and let the assassin, fighter, and monk gang rape it as it missed one turn.

Now, the wizard is my best friend and a rules lawyer by heart, so I believed him when he said restrained means advantage and hits are crits. I'm going to be a little butt rustled if you tell me that's not true.

Strict rules for how people approach combat, sub-DM to help crunch abilities, move tokens, and get people's attention.
And a hell of a lot of patience.

Also benefited that all but one really loved to roleplay more than anything else, so when I needed to handle shit they'd just get into in-character banter. The only real challenge was wrangling them back onto me once that happened.
>>
>>46149327
I mean, after that post he made spell-less ranger and blood hunter, so he's probably open to other UA stuff.
I'd actually like to see a favored soul sheet, but since it intersects with cleric kind of but not really I'd imagine it would range from annoying to absolutely infuriating to write down unless you did a sheet modification (front page or spells) for each cleric spell school in which case that sounds tedious and just simply awful.

>>46149359
There is never a situation where you are against a lone humanoid of challenging skill and Hold Person is not the correct choice.

To top it off, be an Aarakocra for the 50 ft fly speed. Grab Expertise in Perception and the Observant feat to get your passive Perception to ridiculous levels so his opponents cannot hide from him and watch as your character is able to actually ambush his ambushers >:)

Restrain doesn't function like that, but Hold Person/Monster paralyzes which does function like that. In fact, Hold Person/Monster is one of the most effective spells to use in a party with a Rogue or Paladin. Since the damage for both is dependent on lots of dice rolls, getting criticals is fantastic and very synergistic.

>>46149488
Where are the crits coming from?
>>
>>46149363
It sounds like the Gladiator got hard countered. I'd be interested to know what his bonus to the save was. A single creature against a party is always at a huge disadvantage anyway, unless it has legendary actions.
>>

>>46149524
Paralyze turns all hits from creatures within 5 feet into crits.
>>
>>46149532
It had three attacks per turn and the party of four didn't have a single multi-attack, I figured it'd work out. It wasn't the boss monster so I was okay with the party not being in fear of a wipe, but when the enemy gets a single turn and then nothing...

Also, since it's a Wis save, he only had a +1, so a 30% chance of passing
>>
>>46149558
I see it now, for some reason my brain glossed over it in the hold person description. Thanks.
>>
>>46149408

But there can be an entire dungeon of non-humanoids, or dungeons that have elves, dungeons with traps and terrain that could be more easily traversed with spells that aren't hold person.

Hold person is deservedly strong vs humanoids in a world that isn't 100% encounters with non-elf humanoids.

Hold person is undeservedly strong in a world that is 100% encounters with non-elf humanoids.

One of those worlds happens to come up more than the other, and it happens to be the one in which hold person is undeservedly strong.
>>
>>46149598
Yeah, bad call. Not a big problem though, I'm pretty sure most people have had a single creature (however strong) fight a party of 4 or more and be surprised that the party won.

Next time you probably shouldn't have a couple of mooks with the Gladiator to help him out. He has a huge weakness to save spells, as we've seen, so while it is still a CR5 creature, he was simply hard countered by a player with the right tool.

Remember that monks do NOT get the damage die boost with the darts; they are simple ranged weapons while Martial Arts only applies to shortswords and simple melee weapons. It does work with daggers (or javelins, handaxes, etc. if you are a strength build). Remember that you are sharply limited due to the item interactions needed.

Did I go too magical realm today?

A player encountered a fetal doppleganger from a cloning tree. (basically a lot of made up bullshit). He aborted it, not knowing what he was doing, and then tried to make telepathic contact with it. I decided that this would cause the fetal doppleganger to subconsciously shift into the image of the player that the player subcoconsciously has about himself. I asked him whether his character views himself with pride or sadness, etc. He says he was quite proud of himself.

So I describe the doppleganger morphing into a nude, idealized version of the player's character. This is more muscles, more chiseled jaw, etc. And then, as an afterthought, I add: oh, also, its dick is unrealistically, comically, huge.

I thought it was pretty funny, but I worry that sort of joke can make some of my players uncomfortable.

Original inquirer here,

Are you sure Ambuscade is OP?

>Ambuscade: Rangers strike first and strike hard. When you roll initiative, you gain a special turn that takes place before other creatures can act. On this turn, you can use your action to take either the Attack or Hide action.

It specifies that this mechanic takes place when initiative is rolled... so that does in fact imply that you get a bonus round in addition to a surprise round. I feel like this is an oversight though, based on the feature description:
>Rangers strike first and strike hard.

Sounds to imply that if there's a surprise attack then this feature would be inert because the ranger is striking first already.

If that is taken into consideration and decidedly agreeing not to munchkin with the rogue class to get Assassinate and banning players from taking first level to get ambuscade, would it be feasible?
>>
>>46151811
I was a little confused. He made it sound so simple, I thought I overlooked something momentous.
>>

>>
>>46152066
Breastplate?
>>
>>46152074
No because it also has the greaves, bracers, shoulder-pads, and skirt.
>>
>>46152066
I would actually say studded leather.
>>
>>46152066

>>
>>46151981
I hope that was the intention, but it makes no sense with the mechanics. He would still need to be striking before his fellow ambushers or else he isn't really striking first.

Even without the Assassinate, combine it with Lore or Satire Bard 10 and you have an archer able to constantly dish out four attacks at 1d8+15 each before anyone else has a chance at attacking. With Jack of All Trades and maybe Alert, you have a character who can somewhat reliably deal out 8d8+120 damage before anyone else has a chance to act. This is on top of getting to choose to dole out THP like it's candy, give all attacks against a given creature advantage for a round, or inflict an extra greatsword-worth of damage (a much weaker option), each of which would only be a bonus action. He gets to do for free what casters and Battlemasters spend resources to achieve. That's insanely powerful.
>>
>>46141254

>>46152358
I'm not so certain. It is a class that inherently has an ability that says "As a bonus
action, you invoke your spirit companion and
choose a creature you can see. Until the end of
your next turn, all attacks made against the
chosen creature have advantage."

So for any builds that don't prioritize bonus actions too much (hello, Druids and Clerics!), they don't have to min/max to break much of the game. They can give each rogue his sneak attack, each martial his easier GWM and Sharpshooter attacks, and each caster advantage on their spell attacks. I suppose it is no different than Faerie Fire, but it's extremely potent for only five levels.
>>
>>46151981

Same poster here to reply.

Ambuscade specifically states that you gain "a special turn that takes place before other creatures can act." It doesn't say a surprise round, its very obviously stating ambuscade is its own beast separate from surprise. Don't let the fluff fool you.

Even then, if we accept your argument, a guaranteed surprise round at the start of every encounter is incredibly overpowered, especially at 1st level when multiclassing is so easy in this edition.

>>46152648
There are no surprise rounds in 5e. That is a colloquial term (that I tend to use, against my better judgement) to refer to the round when some or all of the members of the battle are suffering from the surprised condition. Thus, since the only requirement for a so-called surprise round is a round where a side has surprised combatants, the Ambuscade round would also be a surprise round. If no one is surprised, it isn't a surprise round. Thus, Ambuscade still allows any abuse that functions with the surprised condition, but it doesn't inflict the surprised condition itself.

So this is going to be my first time playing and rolling up a character. I don't know jack about the mechanics of this game so I'll just give you a backstory and if anyone could tell me what class/attributes fit that would be swell.

Okay, so she is a half elf who lives in a city that discriminates against elves with her mother. They live in the elf ghetto. The mother is a prostitute catering to the many well-to-do youths who fancy "slumming it". My character is a bastard of one of these transactions. The most is neglectful and sometimes a abusive when drunk. My character fines solace in learning the ancient elf languages and lore from the ghetto elf temple. One day the mother decides to rent out her daughter for some extra dosh, and so she runs away.

She is in the countryside begging for a while when she is taken in by a late 30s something nobleman who lost his family. She is taught the noble arts of riding, fencing, and pistol dueling, and also takes marksmanship lesson from the nobleman, who was a decorated veteran. In addition to the well stocked library of the mansion, my character also continues to educate herself on lore, cultures, and languages at a university where the nobleman pays her way. His health deteriorating, the girl sets out to find a cure for her patron's affliction.

Has an addiction to opiates she piked up from the nobleman but hid out of shame. Carry's a metal opium pipe with her along with a brace of pistols, the noble's old rifle, a rapier, and a horse.

After all, the whole point is for the players to retain some semblance of morality so they don't have to hand their characters over to the ST. They may not be a bright light, but they're definitely a light compared to the rest of the darkness out there.

Depends on the campaign and the players. I'm in a Hunter: the Vigil (so we are supposed to be the good guys) and we have had two crime lords of whom one ordered a security guard's family murdered for daring to taze him (which our ST didn't even make him roll Morality for...). We have an eccentric billionaire who is basically being an independent Cheiron, a ninja who kidnaps and tortures vampires behind the backs of everyone while impersonating the billionaire, we had an archaeologist who was a great guy but was willing to kill and maim to stop crime (think Punisher), and a bureaucrat who is already planning to secretly kill off anyone in the party who doesn't go along with her wishes. Even the good guys tend to be pretty awful.
