Depends on the Chapter and how they mark/colour their Sgts. Otherwise they don't have to look special at all, just have the right weapons which generally sets them apart from the rest of the unit to begin with.

Aren't red helmets common for sergeants in 40k for Codex-compliant chapters? If this is for 30k though it's a crap-shoot. Like here's what they suggest for various helmets for Imperial Fists alone.

For Codex Chapters, yes. But, that is why I have said that it depends on the Chapter as many are not fully Codex compliant. I think it would make sense for you to mention what Chapter you would like answers to, don't you? Try to be verbose when asking about things. It makes a lot of unnecessary "leg work."

Going for a classic 2nd edition look, but will add battle damage and scratches later to bring the look up to date.

I decided to remove the details on his shin, I'll paint black flames similar to the 2nd ed box cover instead, might do the same on the powerfist.

>>
>>46120722
Shake the pot even more than you already did.
>>
hey wip, i want to make some road sections for my desert themed terrain, and i was wondering about materials for the road. I thought a long big of balsa would serve as a base, with sand texture to represent the sand creeping in on the road, but the bitumen or road-surface i'm not sure about. i want something easily pitted and cracked, like you see on old roads or in post-apoc movies. a second sheet of balsa maybe, scored and cut to represent it, then covered in a thin coat of some kind of astrogranite texture paint?
>>
>>46120722
This: >>46120758
Also make sure the pot closes properly. Ceramite White seems to go lumpy quicker than other colours.
>>
>>46120758
>>46120830
Think I got it usable again.

Now the question of whether it will give the kind of white I want when painting over red....Time to test it!
>>
>>46120722

Ceramite White goes bad really easy you might have gotten a bad pot. It also will dry out if it's an old pot so you have to add water or medium to it to lower chunkiness.
>>
>>46120766

Sandpaper and blend the edges with weathering powder or whatever you're using for your desert sand.

Fine grit sandpaper has no teeth and you're going to varnish on top anyway which makes it have even less teeth. It won't be smooth but it's not going to be any less abrasive than your matte varnished miniatures.

Anybody have a good alternative for covering a gaming table in a sand like texture, without using actual sand?
I read concrete patch should be good but I failed to find anything comparable in my local DIY store. Any other ideas?
>>
>>46121529
Ceiling spackle?
>>
>>46121529
>concrete patch

Unless you have a sturdy table I wouldn't advise this.

Use Vallejo texture paste as it comes in larger tubs than GW's tiny texture paint bottles and you need to cover a huge table.

There might be stucco or polyfiller paste or spackle that will also work but those also add a lot of weight depending on the material.

Cheapest and easiest way would be actual glue and sand.

Trying to do a bit of an off-white for space marine shoulders.

Did Ceramite White and now I have a wash of Agrax Earthshade over it currently drying.

Should I stop after that, or what color should I layer on top of that, Screaming Skull?
>>
>>46122114

You need to repaint over the agrax earthshade if you slopped it all over instead of just putting it in the outlines.

Also they have an offwhite you can use so you don't need to wash regular white. Most brands will have one but I think GW's is called Ulthuan Grey.

You mean conceptually, or in the lore? The only Imperial Guard regiment I can think of is the Necromunda Spiders, who are recruited from the Van Saar ranks.

But conceptually, yeah, I can see the similarities.

>On the subject of semi-proxies, has anyone got their Deathwatch Overkill box?

Yes

>I was thinking of getting the generation 4 hybrid with the suits and autoguns and convert them to Van Saar. Think it's possible to do a headswap?

I'm sitting here looking at the sprues (pic related). I think that's viable for a "counts as" - other heads you have would probably fit. Be advised:

The suits look a little ragged
Some models have Tyranid paraphernalia
You also get two grenade launchas

i'm not sure the exact savings, but in my case they fucked up the order and sent me 2x command squad and 3x infantry, instead of 1 and 4.

So, both arms are now attached, all I need now is to start painting most of him - and his cloak that I'll be adding - But I don't know what color-scheme to go with. Green and gold is a classic, but I really want a scheme for my Nurgle army that isn't just
>Dirty green with gold/silver
>or dirty bone with gold/silver
As everyone seems to do. Been thinking about red armor for them, but I'm not sure It'll look good.

Does anyone know how the MIG/Ammo and AK Acrylics compare to tg's favourite brands, e.g. vallejo model/air?

I just moved to Spain and every hobby shop around carries a bunch of stuff I've never really had access to before, including those two I mentioned and Scale 75. I know how S75 performs, but I've never heard about Mig and AK acrylics.
>>
>>46135223
>or broken up stills with text?
his is generally better imo.
I can read at my own leisure, skip what I don't care about and the photos tend to be better than what most people can deliver with a video camera unless they got proper equipment.
Not to mention that listening to some people ramble without being able to structure their thoughts can be draining.

So if you got a good camera, enough light and are able to deliver a thought verbally without stuttering or jumping back and forth the video could work, but I find that written articles accompanied by photographs usually produce higher quality content.
>>
How much can I change the Grey Knight basic color scheme if I want to stay within lore constraints? I was thinking of giving backstory to them having different colors, I'd still keep the base as leadbelcher but give the armor some more white and maybe blue than what you usually see.

I was gonna be a smartass and reply that Vallejo is Spanish (the name means small valley) so I'd be surprised if it was difficult to find them there. However turns out it's a US company, go figure. Vallejo should have a section in their website detailing who carries their stuff in each country.

AK and MIG are both brands that initially started out as suppliers of weathering materials (AK is a company started by someone that split off from MIG if I recall correctly).
They've both started doing acrylics a while ago, the colours are similar to VMC in many ways, realistic colours for military modelling, fairly limited palettes.

I own a few AK acrylics (like 1 set of 8 I think), and they're incredibly matte colours, they do have nice consistency and coverage though.

so for my ork backstory i'm having the clan, da spice boyz, live on a entirely-desert planet which theyve named Sandyball.

Their deal is the planet is a copy paste of Arrakis, and they haul spice from the southern pole to the north pole, where their spaceport is, to sell to the tau.

my question for you, /tg/, is are there any model kits, or models out there that i could use to represent sandworms, or fremen technology, or anything of the sort?
>>
>>46135337
Yep, those are very nice. Not going to win awards, but they'll earn you some props at the hobby shop.

I'm not in love with the inquisitor/librarian/tzeentch dude, though. The different colored areas, especially the cream/red, cream/silver, and bronze/silver boundaries need to be better defined with darker shadows - they kind of blur together visually. Also, the conversion seems a little lazy. A couple Tzeentch icons does not make this very imperial figure look properly chaos-y. At least cut off his purity seals and inquisition icons.

If you want to get to competition level, I can't really help, because I'm not there myself. But I have read a lot of stuff and watched a lot of videos by competition-level painters. The biggest and most important thing they do differently from us? They put in a positively ridiculous amount of time per figure. A lot of them will do 40, 50, or 100 hours on a single figure. Every detail must be perfect, every blend smooth as silk. Try putting in that kind of time on a figure and see where it gets you; I bet you'd get closer than you think.

I disagree with >>46135354 about the edge highlighting on the robot. It looks good. Cartoony, yes, but exaggerated highlights are a good look. Take a gander at anything the 'Eavy Metal guys paint. Don't tone down the highlights, but spend more time making them neat, and even, then try to do more of a transition (even if it's just a tiny strip) between the most extreme highlights and the base color. If you want to get the robot to a higher standard, the biggest thing I see is a modelling issue: fill and smooth the gap between the two halves of the gun arms. That seam is staring right at the viewer, and it's not a good look for a high-level figure.

Seriously though, these are all fine figures, painted to a very respectable tabletop standard. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm choosing a primer spray, but the official GW ones seem too expensive.

Some people say any will do, but i also read some reviews and apparently cheap ones have "snowing" effect on the models and that's probably something i don't want.

So i've been thinking about either this one - http://www.humbrol.com/uk-en/33-black-matt-150ml-acrylic-spray-paint.html

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tamiya-100ml-TS-26-Pure-White/dp/B0014BJ730

Are those suitable?

Also, i probably want matte rather than gloss, right?
>>

You know, before GW handed us hobbyists everything on a silver plate, people used to make up shit like this all the time. All stolen from the real "warship" hobbyists. Hell, weathering powders came from the idea of using make up powder, now its a bestseller for this hobby.

Two questions from someone just getting into Warhammer:

First of all, how does one remove a Space Marine head? I fucked up and instead of using another standard helmet for the sergeant I used one without a helmet to make him standout, but then I remembered I could just paint it red a few days later. Since it's a Smurf army I want to keep it as codex adherent as possible.

Second of all, when one is priming their models would I want to base the model, prime both and then customize or prime model, customize the model and then base the model?

Tbemh chalky blobs, not staying within the lines and leaving unpainted areas aren't even a "decent" kindergarten standard for refrigerator art, much less a TT standard for sale - no matter how many colours were applied.

Speaking of low standards - if breaking even on "crazy well-painted" models seems motivational to you, you may want to step back and re-evaluate your priorities in life.

Plenty of sarges are unhelmeted, desu, and once you've got a couple squads, you'll be trying to make them look different from each other anyway.
But to answer your first question, if you used superglue, you can pop him into the freezer for about an hour and then be able to pop it off easily. If plastic glue, that's going to be more difficult since that stuff melts the plastic and then the parts fuse after drying.
As for priming with or without the base, that's more an issue of preference. If you're planning on doing some fancy work on the base, priming separate might be best. Personally I've just gotten used to gluing my mini to the base and leaving the base work last.

Wouldn't get rid of my lot since I enjoy the hell out of them right now but since I am constantly looking at deals the thought passes my mind.

I was just saying that by definition (at least at my shop) his army is a table top standard.

Did you use plastic or superglue?
If later, put it to fridge for a few hours and twist and snap the head off.

If your answer was plastic glue, then just jam knife blade to the neck joint, wiggle around it till feeling loose
or if you can't reach the joint without defiling the whole model, just use brute force and pray.
It will come off, most likely. Touch up is needed afterwards no matter what.

Little changes are best. Then focus on having a strong offset color that really pops from the base armor color. After that and the detail (usually gold), I'd say it's important to get a weapon color that contrasts well with the base and offset color.

You are right to keep the base leadbelcher. You can change the base armor color to something like gold or red or bluish, but you really have to highlight well or it will look very flat. It also makes gold detailing often a no-go, or at the very least stand out a lot less. A lot of people forget this.

Also check out the 1d4chan grey knight brotherhood creation tables for lore ideas.
>>
>>46137285
Doesn't NEED anything really. The rest you can do with your paintjob. Tattoos, Scars, sickly flesh, sunken eyes etc.
If you want to go the extra mile I could see something like a few chaos icons or trims on his armor, to make them look a little less standard issue.
Some grizzly trophies pelts could actually work too and maybe an improvised melee weapon on his belt or something could fit the theme since I think Ogryns would really enjoy being able to get into the thick of any fight.

CCS partial first paint job .jpg

Any comments on my paint job so far?

This is going to be my company command squad. So far I have been using vallejo equivalents of citadel paints. I intend for the fatigues to be steel legion drab, flak armor and lasguns to be black, imperial iconography to be gunmetal, all left shoulder pads to be blue and to have blue berets for my veteran squads. I am still trying to learn to paint fleshtones so their skin is still just bugmans glow but i intend to fix that soon.

Any tips or ideas to make my guardsmen stand out or look colorer would be great.

Also I have been having serious problems trying to learn to paint power weapons and plasma weapons, (i have been practicing on bits of sprue), Is there any tutorials out there that not only show have to paint but also show how not to paint? I need to diagnose my painting because I can't tell if I'm using the wrong brush or paints are they to thin or to thick or am I not letting them dry long enough or what. Because of that I am afraid to begin paint my power weapons. Any help with this would be awesome.

They look nice and clean thus far but you are too early on to give a true judgement.

Finish your layers and do a wash then report back.

Also perhaps only take a picture of 2-3 guys at a time to get a better quality.

So far honestly I hadn't thought of what kind of washes to use, I currently only have a black wash.

On a related matter do you think i should stripe my camo cloaks or just black wash them? I was thinking I like the stripe idea and that I would repaint it steel legion drab again and try it with tallarn sand then black washing it.

But I know I cant keep repainting them without turning them into blobs of paint so do you think it would be worth it or should i just wash it and call it done?

In that case, I think the model would look a lot better if you would either move the rear wheels to sit under the extension, or add another set of wheels to below it. The wheel placement right now is way too close to each other, and the fact that the car's body is very high off the ground only makes that problem stand out more. It looks like it would fall on its ass as soon as you load it up with stuff.

Google some reference pictures of pickup trucks, and you'll see what I mean. They have two sets of wheels but they're very spaced out for stability, and it looks a lot better. You don't have to lower the body either, you can have a pickup truck with high lift that still look sensible, pic related.

I can understand the concern but Malifaux has all the rules for, and sometimes the need due to mission type, for going inside buildings and I've got the infamous Hanging Tree of Malifaux almost done so I figured I would start on the rather large Guild HQ to go with it.

But since the game is played on only a 3' x 3' table there's usually enough room to set the extra levels next to the game.

What you're looking for is something like this:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/ABD-TC-20T.html
It's oil-less, the tank isn't too big, comes with a pressure regulator (you're usually going to be working in the 15-25 PSI range), and has an 1/8th inch hose fitting. Most of the stuff at hardware stores are for pneumatic tools, like nailguns and crap, and are not suitable for use with small-scale airbrushing.

White: see the guide at the top pf the thread, and remember that you need LOTS of thin layers for it not to look like ass.

Flesh- needed thinner layers, better highlighting.

If you know going in that you want the model to end-up predominantly white, simply cover the bare fig with white spray primer [automotive enamel] as the first step and it will magically become your basecoat at the same time - no more brush marks, chalky blobs or weeks of tedious layering of fourteen milky coats to opacity like you're getting paid by the hour ['eavy metal's secret ingredient].

Gotcha, here's the specs on the one i was looking at kinda hard to beat this 1/2 price

87 db I going to get annoying.
My air compressor is <50 db and I have to raise my voice to speak over it.
Just something to consider.
>>
>>46146732
>>46146811 ... Plus it looks like you'll need to get a regulator and moisture trap.

Picture could do with better lighting, cropping, and making into a collage.

Hard to judge on these, other than
>Base needs actual basing instead of just paint
>Can't see, but looks like you haven't picked out the details on the front of the coat.

87 decibels is loud as fuck man. That's louder than a plane taking off
>>
>>46146811

I didn't even think about the noise to tell you the truth
>>46146837
This is true so i guess it'll just be cheaper to go with the TC-20T
>>

AP Gunmetal is a match for Boltgun Metal, not Leadbelcher. If you use Leadbelcher from the pot to match the spray, you will need GW's Leadbelcher spray and spray that over a regular primer.

Otherwise you can use AP Gunmetal and their 100% match dropper paint but it won't match Leadbelcher.

Pic related, #2 is Leadbelcher. It's a very close match but is slightly brighter. If you're going to be putting Nuln Oil over everything I think you can just spray AP Gunmetal and use Leadbelcher paint.

Also if you were asking about quality of the spraycan, AP is always better than Citadel because it costs less and is an actual primer, but the can sprays differently. The pressure is much higher and the nozzle is much more close range so you have to be very careful, quick, and light with it or you might spray too much on your models. A little overspray is fine because it shrinks as it cures, another benefit over Citadel sprays.

I just got some second-hand models ,and I was wondering what should I do to remove their paint?

Soak them in Simple Green, if need be take a soft bristled toothbrush to them afterwards

Google is your best source for 'how to strip paint from miniatures'. If they're plastic, just make sure you're following a tutorial on how to strip plastic minis or you might melt those suckers.

Maybe we should add this to the basic FAQ / frequently requested posts...

As long as you've got access to a Harbor Freight, might as well pic up one of these:

It's a decent airbrush for $20, perfect fro learning how to do things, and is kinda like the bastard child of a couple Badger brushes. I got mine with a compressor, but that still doesn't have the regulator or the tank.

Even though I don't need them, I would *totally* take those for $30. Good find, anon!

You know that NIB RT tank is worth like $75-$100 since it's on sprue and in box right?

Dude what the fuck, the same fucking thread you got that image from told you how to paint it. Just Google Forge World's Alpha Legion recipe. Prime Leadbelcher, spray Tamiya Clear Blue, spray Tamiya Clear Green, do some more Tamiya Clear Blue/Green mixes.

Even the goddamn photo lays it out for you step by step. Silver, blue, green, finishing touches with more blue.
