How's Barovia treating everyone so far?
>>
>>46079655
I just TPK'd my first group in Death House. All died except the tiefling (who had gills) to the ghouls, got back up and died again. Tiefling died from exhaustion, having jumped in the well.

Let them rewind, then they died shortly after to the mimic door. Get to do it to another grou on Saturday.
>>
>>46079789
I nerfed most of the encounters in deathhouse. The players had fun and they never felt like it was too easy.
>>
Does anyone make up prayers and stuff that their Cleric says when healing someone or before they go to battle or anything like that? What are they?
>>
I ran Death House. Everyone died on the way out, Paladin got decapitated by a doorway.
>>
That /5eg/ Discord server is still semi-active if anyone's interested. Good for more real-time homebrew and rules talk, at least.

Also, no.

>>46080083
Beautiful.
>>
>>46079789
My party died when they rooted around in the "trash pile"and didnt think to run away
>>
>>46079655
My group managed to escape death house with no one dying. The fighter in our group managed to get a 20 AC before we fought the mound so he was able to tank it while everyone else worked on escaping and pelted it with magic and swords until we escaped and it fell.

Then we had to make a mad dash out of the house after it it became a giant death trap. We basically bashed down every wall in the house in order to avoid the damned door trap. That thing almost killed our paladin, who then fell to poison, but I managed to save him with a potion of healing we found.

Overall, very fun, and we have another CoS adventure planned for tomorrow. Looking forward to it personally.

You've done it! You've cleared the kobolds out of the mountain, snuck past their traps and killed the dragon. A huge pile of gold lies before you, its splendour only somewhat marred with dragon innards...

How are you going to actually get this treasure home? It must weigh tons and the mountain roads are filled with bandits.
>>
>>46080406
raise the kobolds as zombies and use them to carry the gold for me
>>
>>46080406
Hire the bandits to carry it out for you. Turn them into your very own mercenary band.
>>
>>46080406
> Kobolds

> Gold
Daily reminder that Garl Glittergold is the worst.
>>
>>46080455
Now that's good thinking. Be sure to have the strongest in the party lug the dragon's head around to show that you mean fucking business.
>>
>>46080406
Make the cave my base and buy the bandits
>>
So I wanna make a fey-pact bladelock, I figure it should be drow or some other elf. For stats I kinda want to throw a lot in dex so i can get some AC and use mostly finesse weapons, that and Cha would be the main stats, Anything I'm missing or I should account for?
>>
Can anyone with a Twitter account here ask Crawford if the aging effect from the Wild Magic Surge table can be reversed?
>>
>>46080406
Bags of holding. Other magics that allow for inter-dimensional storage. Hire a Goliath mercenary or buy several donkey or war horses and carts. Stuff like that.
>>
Anons, my players might walk into a dungeon, and if they do the wrong thing, awaken 70+ zombies. They're level 8, with a cleric and paladin. How fucked are they?

Oh, and one revenant spellcaster.
>>
>>46080564
Do they also have a ma- >>46080590

Well, they'll probabily be fine then
>>
Anyone else play Ravenloft more as a monster-hunting Castlevania type setting than straight horror? I just don't think you can really scare a guy in a tabletop game, but I think a lot of the players I know leap at the chance to kick a Dracula's ass.
>>
>>46080608

As long as that spell caster has fireball.
>>
>>46080647

I think you can set the mood and if the players let their imaginations go, it can be frightening. But it really takes a lot of buy in.
>>
>>46080608
I should have mentioned the revenant will be a monster, not an ally...in case it wasn't clear. According to the math, it's roughly twice the Deadly value for their level.
>>
Okay /5eg/ I need some help.
My group is doing some really fucked up shit in the kingdom of the rat people in my setting.
How do you stat a Vermin lord from Warhammer in fifth addition.
>>
>>46080564
>>46080590
If the revenant spellcaster in the party or in the zombie hoard? Either way the party should probably be fine since 70 zombies is more of a mild inconvenience for an 8th lvl party than an actual threat. Plus the cleric can easily destroy a fair chunk of them with his destroy undead ability.

Now, believe it or not, 70 kobolds would be much more lethal. Mostly because of ranged combat and advantage on every attack means that the kobolds would hit alot more often and the fight could easily turn into death by 1000 cuts. Not likely but more plausible than the zombies being a legit threat.
>>
>>46080564
Lichway or DFD?
>>
>>46080608
>>46080655

Fairly certain >>46080590 is a bad guy.
>>
>>46080720
Lore-wise, it's a dungeon where a cleric allowed himself to be interred alive to guard a magic item, along with dozens and dozens of volunteer worshipers.

>>46080717
>>46080752
Correct. The Revenant is a bad guy! Should have made that clearer.

>>46080720
Don't get the reference...
>>
>>46080774
The Lichway is a module from White Dwarf 9 (?) where there are a huge number of undead held in stasis by a monster. When the players kill the monster, the undead all rise.

Death Frost Doom is basically the same thing remade for Lamentations of the Flame Princess.
>>
Scan when?
>>
>>46080774
Ah ok then. It won't be that great of a challenge still but the revenant spell caster can sit behind the literal shit-ton of meat-shields and blast the party to death if they play it wrong. This encounter more seems like a test of their cleverness to weave through the hoard and kill the caster fast rather than a test of strength which sounds like a very fun encounter to me personally.
>>
>>46080919

It's not even worth asking anymore. It's not happening. go home.
>>
>>46080933
Upload the schematics of the dungeon. Show where these fights will be. One huge horde is boring AF.

How are you going to keep the now-unprotected gold safe while you go do these things? (and why won't bandits betray you?)

>>46080437
This might just work, depending on the local town's assessment of the trustworthiness of a man with a horde of very wealthy zombies.

You've got the gold back to the local small farming town; what now? Where can you store it? Where can you use it?
>>
>>46080919
>>46080986
It's not a question of if. Only when.
>>
>>46080564
Assuming the cleric has just maxed out his wisdom, his Destroy Undead would instantly destroy approximately three quarters of the zombies within range. At 8th level, you can do this twice.

They'll be fine.
>>
>>46081016
hollow out the insides of the kobold zombies and smelt chainmail to their bones. They are now literal walking bags of gold.
>>
>>46081014
Well, it has a distinct lack of ruleset elitism endemic to so many other systems.

Not that you've ever had to worry about that, Anon.

>>
>>46081484
Gold is pretty damn heavy, better be a good cart.

How big is a gold piece anyway? Is there any sort of banking system, or do you literally have to lug thousands of gold coins somewhere whenever you want to buy a magic sword?
>>
>>46081622
Offline play can be just as consistent. It's all about the people and tone of the group, not the medium.

The only thing I can say about Roll20 is that there's more shit players and GMs by sheer number because the player pool is bigger than any IRL pool you might run into..

Yep, I'm the one who bans monks because they're op, the one who uses DMPCs that render players useless, the one who gives 1/8 CR creatures action surge, cunning action, reckless attack and extra attack while with cero penalty and without increasing the CR or xp, etc. Sure is me the one who does all of that.

I've looked into Tyranny of Dragons, Princes of the Apocalypse, and Out of the Abyss, and I have noticed something. The plots are terrible cliche garbage. There's no way I'm running these things. How is CoS, does it actually have a plot?
>>
>>46082128
Curse of Strahd's plot is basically the same as the original Ravenloft adventure. The party gets trapped in Barovia, and they need to kill Strahd to escape. The greatness of the game lies in all the side little missions, as well as Strahd's backstory. It's not the most original thing in the world, but it's good for what it is. I can clarify more if you'd like.
>>
>46082128

No more than Dracula had a cliche plot since it feels very much the same. Its all about how well the DM plays as Stahd.

>>46082334
Actual content.

Some of the races people wanted in the poll about races a year ago would be nice, though.
>>
>>46080999
>>46080933

They'll actually be assailed in two direction; the revenant from behind--the magic item is in his tomb; its removal triggers the animation of the zombies--and the zombies come from burials at the front of the dungeon.

In addition, if the magic item moves past a certain point in the dungeon, the floor collapses, leading to a 200 foot drop into a subterranean lake filled with a very nasty monster.

I've also set the plot hooks to warn them from going into this direction--I know they're going to, but that's part of the campaign.

>>46081080
That was my assumption, as well, but my players have been known to do odd things before.

>>46081775

>>
>>46082267
Just because the races and classes are derived from classic fantasy doesn't mean the settings and stories have to be uninspired and completely predictable.

For fucks sake, the first three official 5e adventures all use "cultists" as villains. Two of the first three adventures start with "So you're guarding a caravan when..." And what do the villians want? Why, to "destroy the world" of course. Its boring.

Look at OSR games like DCC and LotFP. Look at OSR settings like Yoon Suin, Slumbering Ursine Dunes, the Anomalous Subsurface Environment, A Red and Pleasant Land. All of this material is rooted in D&D traditions too, but unlike the official 5e content, this shit is actually interesting and new.
>>
>>46082946
>LotFP
>As an example of non-cliched writing
Here's your (you), anon.
>>
My players keep starting fights, then deciding they don't want to fight them.
Like, on several occasions they've tried to negotiate with an enemy in a hostile situation with absolutely no leverage. I warn them in character every time that the enemy will give them 'X' but if they keep pushing it they're going to get into a fight.
An example:
They tried to negotiate a hostage situation and offered nothing. The hostage-taker told them to back off and leave the building, but they kept walking forward towards him. So he killed a hostage.

All of their 'social' plans have absolutely no thought put into them, if they put on a disguise they just assume it's going to work. If they try to persuade someone, they just roll and ask for what they want.

Also, the rogue keeps trying to shove and grapple people with his 6 str and then gets butthurt when he fails.
>>
>>46083178
Sounds like your players are just stupid.

Can't cure stupid. Can only cure ignorance.
>>
>>46083178
Sounds like they might be happier with a straightfoward dungeon crawling campaign.
>>
>>46083178
Perhaps they are not very creative people or they come from a system oriented mindset. The game is designed around set rules and mechanics. If the players want to wear a disguise the rules state the player makes a Charisma (Deception) check. The rules do not explicitly state that the player has to role play the disguise, that is something that you as a DM would desire, unless you claim Rule Zero (GTFO).

I have no idea what a Wisdom of 20, an Intelligence of 20, a Dexterity of 20, a Charisma of 20, a Constitution of 20, or a Strength of 20 would look like in the real world. Nor do you. Nor do you know what those related skill checks would look like. Your posting on 4chan, come on now.

Now if you as a DM desire more role play you can give advantage for the player if they are creative, or auto-pass them. Do not penalize them because YOU are not creative enough to deal with it.

There are limits, but they do not seem to be hitting those limits by your example.
>>
>>46083651
I do give them advantage if they come up with a clever idea or get a good roll on a not-so-clever idea. I like the idea of dumb luck and thinking outside the box.

I'm just struggling to find ways to make obviously bad ideas backfire without seeming like I'm railroading them into the "accepted" ways of doing things. Like when they fail their negotiations some of them will claim that I always planned for that to happen.
After the last session I just sent them all the PHB and told them which parts to read, because despite most of them already having it I know none of them have read it.

Forget espionage, forget gathering information, forget exploration. Have a bunch of gnolls come out of fucking nowhere and start raiding the town, and when they beat the gnolls to a pulp have one of them carry a bounty notice on them that has a payment site listed on it. Have them go to the payment site, interrogate that dude, who leads them to a different part of the world. In between, throw in a shit-ton of random encounters. These guys don't care about role-playing, they only care about being tough for once in their life, and by stifling their ability to blow things up or HULK SMASH shit up, you're not going to get anywhere.

They're a dud group. Don't penalize them for being duds if you can't exchange them.

I retract my previous statement.
>>
>>46081014

Comparing it to other editions of D&D, it's more that it's not awful in the ways that other editions are. It doesn't have the enormous list of zomg suepr rad powers that 4e has. It doesn't have the ridiculous amount of crunch and bloated catalog of splat books that 3e/PF has. It doesn't exist just to screw Gygax out of royalties, like 2e did. It doesn't have the wonky list of different subsystems all working in different ways that 1e did.

Comparing it to other fantasy rpgs out there, it doesn't make my dick quite as hard as Warhammer 2e. Unfortunately, my players aren't as interested in being rat catchers as they are in being Paladins with holy avenger swords. Dungeon World wants the GM to be making the world as they go along, but I'm more of a high-prep GM and like to have most of the world they'll be interacting with set down ahead of time. Fantasy Craft looked at 3e and decided it needed even more rules, which is the exact opposite direction from where I'd want to go. Warrior, Rogue and Mage, Old-School Hack, and other rules-lite games don't scratch my players' itch to make 'builds'—most of them have played 3e/PF for many years and enjoy that sort of theorycrafting nonsense. I'd run Sword World or Meikyuu Kingdom, but none of my players can read Japanese well enough to make that feasible, and I'm damned sure not going to translate an entire RPG just for one campaign. Basically the same story for Das Schwarze Auge, except that we live in Japan and not Germany, so absolutely none of us can read the thing, myself included.

Comparing it to RPGs outside the high fantasy genre, it's really nothing special. But right now old-school modules are my thing, so D&D5e is what I'm running. When I want to do something else, I'll run a campaign with that. Probably Noumenon will be next, or maybe one of the many Cthulhu Mythos games.
>>
>>46084205
Is that in Rise of Tiamat? That's the one 5e module I didn't run, because Part 1 and 2 are shit...

>>
>>46084456
>It doesn't exist just to screw Gygax out of royalties, like 2e did.
I don't see why that would still make you not play that edition now that Gygax is dead. He's not getting any royalties for anything now.

>actually running Noumenon
Are you a unicorn?
>>
>>46084673
Oh, I read it when it came out, since I worked at a bookstore at the time (fuck I miss that job). Laughed at the entire thing, since it's so shit. I played it for a while, since that was the only game I could find. DM was awesome, but the adventure was crap.

IMO; if you get it for free, it's not bad having it around to steal from.

Don't pay even amazon's price for it, though. To make it good, you'd basically have to rewrite the thing from scratch.
>>
>>46084673
I have had too man issues with it and had fun runing it for my group who also enjoyed it.

I know Hoard is not to good by any means but I do think people are overly hard on it. Still it's not for everyone.

Rise of Tiamat however is perfectly decent.

>>46084685

More like I don't see any reason to play 2e over 1e or BECMI. The fluff was incredible, but the crunch isn't all that great. It started the whole "rule for everything" pattern that really peaked with 3.5. I'd definitely rather play 2e than 3e, but I'd just cut out an awful lot of the optional rules and homebrew solutions for things players want to do.

Noumenon is amazing and I'd totally run it. I'm a massive Jorge Luis Borges fan, how could I not love it?

Where the only reason mages haven't taken over the world is that they must periodically be cleansed by an envious, non-magical population. Either that or they manage to kill each other off (very likely, if they are anything like some PCs I've seen...).
>>
>>46086152
Skills are used frequently in combat for a wide variety of worthwhile maneuvers.
Proficiencies are chosen by the player. Mages for instance get 2, while Soldiers get 6 (both at level 1). Proficiencies are divided by weapon type (ie: blunt, edged, bows) which removes the unnecessary martial/simple split. A second proficiency in a category gets you the exotic weapons and a +1 bonus. Extra proficiencies can be spent on tricks, which are like the 5e fighter's maneuvers.
Each weapon type on that table (ie: whips, flails) has a feat chain associated with them, making a significant difference in how different weapon users play.

I'm working out an idea for a homebrew magic item type (like a wand or a staff) that is essentially a magic automaton. Requires attunement by a spellcaster, and requires that the attuned spellcaster feed it spell slots in order to activate it. Automatons have abilities that can be used by consuming energy, causing them to deactivate sooner, but otherwise act in a similar manner to skeletons or elementals where they follow orders and do nothing but defend themselves when they have not been given an order. After a period of time the automaton deactivates unless it is fed more energy from its spellcaster.

I'm intending them to be like golems, but smaller and more utility focused rather than combat focused. i.e. a Tiny humanoid with skeleton key for a left hand. Can consume 2 hour's worth of energy to replicate the Knock spell without making any noise.

Does this sound like an interesting idea? Would you consider it at your table?
>>
>>46086251
would you say is it easier to learn compared to 3.5? how deadly is it? how is high level play?

pls 5eg dont kick i am a little sad, will go to the general after this question
>>
>>46086331
Less deadly I'd say, there's a cool (optional) system for cheating death if a character dies in a shitty way. Characters grow more horizontally than vertically, in that rather than having insane health and damage you have tons of options and tricks, so high level play is pretty fun.
The rule book is laid out pretty poorly so it can be tricky to pick up, but the rules all mesh together really well and it's simple when you get down to it. One thing I really like is that the action economy is two actions of any kind instead of D&Ds "one move, one bonus, one attack". You can move twice or attack twice or one of each or whatever. Oh and magic isn't spells per day paperwork and is really easy to learn and use.

Sorry for derailing 5efags.

It says in the PHB that 50 coins weigh 1 pound, so not that much. It also says that transactions that require many coins don't actually use them, they use trade bars, letters of credit, or other goods
>>
>>46081645
Why would there be a banking system to support the handful of people who are in a position to be trading/selling/gifting magic swords?

Anyhow, I personally just bumped everything down a step so anything listed in pp is actually valued in gp, gp in sp, sp in cp. Because historically none of my players could be assed to give a shit about any quantity of copper coins when they can buy so little in RAW
>>
>>46086527
this seems really light. so 0.02 pounds per coin, or about 9 grams. usa half dollar coins that are about 90% silver weigh about 12 grams. the american silver eagle (99.9something% silver) is a bit bigger and weighs about 31 grams.

idk maybe that makes sense. i just always pictured d&d coins as being pretty big.

i know this doesnt matter in a make believe game.

I think it's less realism, and more the ability to carry enough money to actually buy things you might want past character creation. It's somewhat awkward to insist on non-coin payments from PCs who travel, and the value of items fluctuates wildly from reality.

so, /5eg/.
I went AT rogue for my OotA campaign, and I'm regretting it now.

due to many shenanigans, I went from 6th level to 9th level in one session.
Is there anything I can start multiclassing in after 7th or 8th that would be good? I'm not particularly fond of trying to get all the way to 13th versatile trickster and finally 3rd level spells, or even 9th for magical ambush. Reliable talent sounds really nice, but that would require 3-4 levels in the class with relatively nothing else gained.
If I had gone assassin, I would be going full ninja shadow monk right about now, but I highly doubt the DM would let me change archetypes after being an AT for 3 levels.

I'm open to dips, or just the full 12-13 levels as a different class.
>>
So my favorite lovelies, I know CoS is a rendition of the classic and original Ravenloft setting, and only encompasses Barovia, but what if I want to somehow inject the rest of the newer AD&D Ravenloft setting into an already in-progress adventure? I want to inject the whole shebang into the current land that is around Barovia, the whole Lands of the Core and the Islands of Terror.

After Strahd is defeated, could I say 'for some reason' the world around them only expands? perhaps it's the Dark Powers's unwilling response to Strahds defeat? A sort of merging of many pocket Planes of Dread?
Help me make this a little less cheesy sounding /5eg/, preferably within the laws that AD&D 2e Ravenloft provides.
>>
>>46086265
You very much have to have the right type of group with a heavily creative GM, and even then it's not something you want to play regularly forever, but when those conditions are met, it can be really cool in a trippy-as-fuck way for a campaign lasting one to ten sessions.
>>
>>46086774
>6th level to 9th level in one session

Either you took a shit ton of "home base truck stops" after 30 minutes spergs of hack n' slash, or your DM foolishly allows experience points earned on one level add to the next one's progress..
>>
>>46086774
i mean i would just tell your dm you don't like being an AT and can you make a new character

if you multi its probably best to either go fighter for that sweet sweet archery style, or wizard because its also an int based caster.

you could also start going shadow monk, assassinate doesnt really synergize with shadow monks especially better than what other rogues get. shadow monk mostly just synergizes with regular sneak attack.
>>
>>46086669
It's possible that Toril is a smaller planet than Earth, and thus has less gravitational pull?
>>
>>46086749
I don't think it'd be too difficult to have a little of both. Maybe you could make it possible to have trade unions to visit and exchange vast numbers of coins for the appropriate sized bars, or have a simple banking system to allow players to write letters of credit if there is a particularly obnoxious NPC who doesn't accept 1500 individual coins for a suit of armor
>>
>>46086669
I would think that even if they're called gold coins they are only part gold like most coins irl. 24 carat coins would get deformed by handling if they're thin enough as well.
>>
>>46086774
What's so bad about going full Rogue?

OOTA goes to level 15 so with full Rogue you end up with proficiency in Wisdom saves, 8d6 sneak attack damage, blindsense, Reliable Talent, plus spells and advantage every turn (if you weren't using a familiar for it).

Bar maybe MCing Wizard after level 9, and thus ending up a level 7 caster overall and so getting a 4th level spell slot with no 4th level spells to cast, I can't see the benefit. Maybe you could go Wizard right now and end up an 11th level caster, that'd net you 5th level spells and a 6th level spell slot but you'd miss out on Evasion, a few ASIs and Reliable Talent.

If you disregard spellcasting level and go to 8 Rogue you could take a dip into Fighter for a fighting style? 2 for Action Surge isn't bad but it doesn't get you more sneak attack so I dunno if I'd bother personally. Going Ranger would mix your casting stats so I wouldn't recommend it but Colossus Slayer is an extra d8 once/turn to add to your sneak attacks.
>>
So. Uh.
I made a PC to try to learn the system, and he's carrying more weight in equipment at creation than he can actually carry. What exactly do I do about that? Do I pick what to not have? Do I just ignore it?
>>
Will probably finish Death House tomorrow so the group will move onto CoS

With the deck readings. Man, some of Strahd's enemies are not created equal. You can get Van Richten, Mordenkainen, etc... or you can get a Vistani commoner with 2 hit. So Harsh!

well idk a 200 BCE roman denarius was 95% or more silver so says wikipedia, and weighed 4 grams, plus or minus a bit, so half of what a silver piece weighs, about in d&d, and that was 19mm in diameter, smaller than a modern day quarter (roughly 23 mm across).

so that was pretty small, and also all silver.

europeans also even used all silver coins (well, as pure as they could get all silver) even into say the 1500s so says wikipedia. and for example a Charlemagne new penny says wiki is 95-96% silver and weighs 1.7 grams, so thats about what a d&d silver piece is. and i think thats supposed to be 20mm about across.

do what you will with this shoddily researched information.

If there was a 2h finesse weapon, rogues shouldn't get proficiency with it. They never have anything in their other hand anyway so it would be strictly superior to the rapier.

Fighters, rangers and paladins should be proficient with estocs (1d10 2h finesse). Races with weapon proficiency like elves shouldn't get it either.

sorry, let me correct myself. Some models of estoc have lengthened pommels for some extra precision and leverage, not necessarily extra thrusting power. But don't think the estoc is inherently a weapon that requires any more dexterity than a longsword. Dark Souls made everyone think an estoc is used like a rapier when it really is just a longsword with a much thinner blade for piercing mail.

>>
>>46087073
I recommended going to 9 and then MCing Wizard because it means you don't have 1/2 useless levels for calculating your Spellcasting Level.

What kind of absurdly powerful shit is the DM throwing at you? More to the point where are you in the adventure? My party's currently in Blingdenstone at level 6.

For reference if you were using XP then just based on monster rewards you'd have to kill a CR 29 creature to go straight from level 6 to level 9. For an ordinary party of 4 that is.

In CR 6 creatures you'd need to kill 60 of them at once, i.e. 60 Galeb Duhr or something.

To further build upon this. Some class archetypes are bigger than others, so only include the core traits they give, don't insert every single battle master maneuver in the book on the sheet. The important part is that the class traits put on the sheet are fully defined there, in a shrunken form. Items that don't really have a place on the current character sheet, like the paladin's lay on hands ability, can also be included here with a simple __/__ blank line set next to the "Lay on Hands" description for the player to refer back to when it's needed.

Shit like this I guess, just spit balling. I can try and come up with ways to shrink it so the text fits on one or two pages.

That's a fair point mentioning the direct copying from the book. I just wouldn't upload it to the DMsguild and avoid putting any watermarks on those specific sheets that reference to your work on the guild, so no /tg/ character sheet label, but some other anonymous moniker. Potentially you could include it in the same off-site link you put the zip in and just claiming you didn't upload that zip if it ever comes up, which it doubtfully ever will.

Failing that, just stick it in the mega or some other off-site .zip link
>>
>>46087950
It's pretty easy for players to die. But the villain does not want to kill them at the start so they should survive or a bit, unless they are stupid.
>>
>>46087950
I would say that it requires a fair bit of work on the DM's part. A lot of the character/NPC interaction is completely unwritten for you to create your own ideas from. a lot of the character/Strahd interaction is like this too except for how he generally acts and feels.
>>
>>46087951
They are, in fact, my new default zombie, because they're so much more interesting.
>>
>>46088039
They are, but I guess it get a little bit too chaotic when you fight many zombies at once. Managing the limbs of 10+ zombies probably isn't very fun for anyone.
>>
>>46087950
Not too much different, it's similar to OOTA but far more open I'd say.

>How much work
That all depends, the adventure as written is serviceable but it's deliberately unclear on what exactly Strahd gets up to and his ultimate plan. It's up to the DM to roleplay and do a lot of smart thinking, and the players to engage with that.

The bit that would seem to change up the adventure the most, the Taroka reading, doesn't actually matter all that much. The adventure presents good reasons to go to pretty much every location anyway and as a result finding the treasures is a matter of course and good investigation. Where you encounter Strahd is not as important as the fact that you will fight him, and the main intrigue comes from the events leading up to that point. Finally the ally is a character picked randomly, and could easily just be chosen by the DM from his favourite options, you'll meet most of them regardless. I'm gonna go with Mordenkanien unless they got to Eva and she says otherwise.

>Encounter difficulty
Early on there's a lot that can kill them, it's not a forgiving adventure by any means as the random encounters are very frequent (10% chance every 30 minutes on the road, 25% in the wilderness). But many of them are noncombat and you only throw a couple every few hours normally, so don't be too afraid. The set encounters are very difficult, but can be avoided by clever players.

Don't sweat player death and roll with it, it's about as easy to die as in OOTA albeit with the forgiveness of an easier start at a higher level (assuming you don't run Death House). Also they'll have their equipment but won't have a small army of NPCs.

>>46087951
Soon my brother.

Their limbs fall off and attack, the stat block was put up the other day.
>>
>>46087984
Yeah, that's a pretty acceptable solution to me. Another thing is that it is pretty typing intense, and the OCR on the PHB doesn't really allow for reliable copy-pasting. I thought maybe some anons could copy the features verbatim and upload a pastebin so I can copy/paste and organize, would help a lot.

Ah, here we are.
This one session alone is
>between 8-10 spined devils (can't really remember exact number) that explode on death and 6 got fucking EVAPORATED by something the champion did involving his god and him dying (he was OK though)
>1 Glabrezu , full health, god dissolved in a round of combat after dispel magic fucked it's darkness
>Pit fiend at half or so health with 21(why) AC

>loot time
>but wait
>Encounter with Death Tyrant!
>I managed to fnagle out way out of with massive metaphorical balls and lots and lots of flattery/ass kissing
>Also picked up a cursed weapon in the process that fucks me hard with lightning if something happens
>party prepares to rest

>BALOR TIME
>it's got full health and 23 (fucking WHY) AC
>immediately teleports to and melts the battlemaster after he does a goading attack
>almost destroys my rogue and a glabbagoole
>Champion crits like 6 attacks in a row, i manage to get booming blade off a fuckton, warlock hits it with pretty much EB and has repelling
>it dies
>explodes
>my rogue barely saves, unconcious
>gelatinous cube at low health
>monk unconcious
>everything flammable a bunch of people had is gone
>even more loot
>session ends
>congrats, level 3 times.
>also, you guys found a ring on the pit fiend with a single spell inside and one charge
>it's fucking wish

That's not even getting into the sheer number of magical items the party picked up in other sessions and this one.
Want me to list just the shit I have?
it's still crazy bullshit
>>
>>46088064
It isn't but, really, if you're being swarmed by 8 or more of these zombies as a party of 4 level 2s or lower, you should probably just run unless you know you can kill each one in a few hits, which isn't really a possibility until at least level 3 for most classes.

>2 potions of cure light wounds

I'm currently making a quest and I was wondering if I'm making it too convoluted. So far the PCs and a bunch NPCs are in a race to get from one side of the continent to the other side for 500,000 gold which is all a ruse by a vampire to find strong and intelligent test subjects to use a mask that in theory should grant him the power to ignore the usual weaknesses of being undead and a vampire.

>>
>>46087825
I think attunement is good for traditional play, but if you use, not to sound elitist, interesting magical items instead of just +4 to stat or +2 AC etc. then it shouldn't be a problem. It's a problem that exists only if magical items can be worn by practically anyone for equal benefits, and thus needed to stop one player from hogging them all. At least in my mind, I've never had a magical item needing attunement come up.
>>
>>46088548

Doesn't sound too complicated to me. How would living subjects be useful in testing out the mask? Is he planning to turn the winners into vampires first?
>>
>>46088624

Attunement would be a lot better if it were just a blanket rule for all non-consumable magic items. It would add in a little bit of forethought and challenge, so you'd have to decide if your Pipes of Haunting are going to be more useful than your Lute of Building. It would free up the DM to give the players a wider variety of items, confident that they won't become utter deities just because they have a lot of items.

>Cleric
Wizard will be just as fun
>>
>>46089058
oh boy, don't get me started.

It made me pay more attention to some of the features clerics get and I'm really tempted to make a Paladin/war cleric multiclass now, what with the giving myself attacks as bonus actions, the extra divine smite damage for more nova, and the +10 to hit channel divinity.

Thanks, anon. This took a bit longer than expected, but with the base formatting done, should be a bit quicker now.

Yeah, cleric etc should be fun, might have to shrink the font a few sizes.
>>
>>46089187
wow. Charsheetanon. I'm impressed by this. It looks really good.

I honestly wouldn't and could't blame you for giving cleric and wizard another extra sheet tacked on to either the back of the spellsheet or simply onto another separate sheet. there's just so much for them it would be nae impossible to fit it all without it being in a tiny font.

working on fighter right now.
>>
>>46089187
Out of curiosity, do you think you could provide a template for making this sort of thing?

The crib sheets are great, but I might have a homebrew class that would need the same treatment.
>>
>>46089266
When I finish the ones I get done this morning, I will put them in the zip, along with a blank template pdf and illustrator file.

Fighter is done. Pastebin updated

http://pastebin.com/7Bwp4arb

would it be a good idea to multiclass into champion fighter to get that 19 crit trait as a paladain? I'm devising a way to make a paladin class based solely on delivering the most destructive nova damage possible. I want his divine smites to be like dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
>>
>>46089227
>>46089187
Maybe doing them by domain/school would be better, as that is the majority of the stuff anyway
>>
>>46089332

I always laugh when I see a poor noobie get owned by those goblins. That encounter is not to be taken lightly. I hope you at least told them they could use the cart for 1/2 and 3/4s cover depending on if they where inside it or next to it.
>>
>>46089187
Er, slight little bit, nothing major.
Do expertise boxes need to be on any of the formatted for single class sheets like this, apart from bard/rogue?
>>46089343
Battlemaster fighter is probably better for that, with the Superiority dice and all that. I may be wrong, though.
>>
>>46089354
This is also a good move, but more work on your part I assume. If you decide to go this route, you could just put them in a folder for better organization.
>>
>>46089367
I don't know. The BIG thing about critting as a paladin, is that it DOUBLES whatever level of smite's damage dice you use on that crit, so double, and later tripling (although I don't think I'd dip more than three or 4 [for the ability boost] fighter levels) your critical hit chance.

I know going rogue assassin and doing suprise nuke-smites is probably the better route for getting crits, but I just can't bring even my min-maxing ass to play a rouge paladin. It just doesn't make sense unless maybe you're evil.
>>
>>46089367
Superiority dice don't help you crit.

>>46089343
You'll still get 5th level spells so yeah, but you'll miss out on your capstone feature, an ASI and your 30ft auras.

The reason 5th level spells are important is because of Banishing Smite, which is the spike you need.
>>
Is there a better thread than this one to ask for *old* D&D scans in? Because I really want Red Steel.
>>
>>46089414
>just doesn't make sense unless maybe you're evil

Just cause you're on a mission from god doesn't mean you can't be a shifty cunt, having the skills doesn't make you evil.

Hell, could be some asshole who turned his life around and dedicated himself to a good cause.
>>
>>46089434

Vengeance rogue paladin doesn't make sense unless you're evil?
Are you quite daft?
there's tons of inspiration for avengers that don't quite follow the law, but follow their own code. 90% of action movies are like that. Or superheroes.

>>46089433
I did in fact realize that, but don't maneuvers (riposte, in particular) and feinting, menacing, and goading attack in any particular allow you to basically just splooge damage all over something in a round? adding that with smite damage means you don't really need to crit, you just splash d8s all over the table.
>>
>>46089509
I guess perhaps I was wrong, but I just don't like my paladin characters to be shifty types. I like the "step up and face me!" types.

It really depends I guess on how the math plays out. If I'm statistically able to damage my table with more d8s via nuke-smites than it outshines battlemaster, or vise versa.
>>
>>46089358
They can be brutal. This was outside LMoP though but they kept oneshotting three goblins before the last one critted him
>>
>>46089542
>step up and face me types
That is a bit more difficult to find inspiration from, yes.
Less edgy batman, ala adam west or Brave and the bold?
Half the movies I can think of with jet li or jackie chan have that kind of dirty but not quite dickbag style of fighting for justice.
Vegeta? Actually, he's a pretty good example of exactly that "fuck you get over here and fight me" bit.
Kill bill is probably a good example, and actually uses swords.

Holy shit this is amazing. Not to be a pain in the ass, but include SCAG for sure. But fuck UA, it's not official. I guarantee someone over at Wizards wish they weren't too lazy to do shit like this. Imagine getting a PHB with a pack of character sheets like this, just scan some copies and you're off.

RIP, I'm stationed in Okinawa. My local gaming place is nothing but smelly edgy people barely turned adults who don't want rules game, they want epic funny game. Makes me sad that I can't seem to find a more serious group of players that I would enjoy more.

Can cause effects on attacks with one archetype

There's a ton there, but there are bases near Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and up in northern Touhoku as well.
