Our Pro-Emperor Chapter and these Renegades used to be comrades. They didn't maintain close ties like many chapters, but they had previous dealings and even fought alongside one another in several campaigns. There was always tension on our sides prolific use of psykers but nothing untoward at first.

Always denigrated by many other Ultramarine Successors for their abandonment of the Tactica in favour of close quarters carnage, their lack of recognised glory pushed the chapter to acts of desperate valour. Soon that desperation to be recognised as peerless warriors turned to rage.

Worthy foes present in the sector soon began to dwindle. The Orks infesting the Tarrus Moons? Cleansed. The Eldar Corsairs attacking convoys on the Perseus Run? Obliterated. The rage that had gripped the Chapter inevitably turned to those less deserving of the Astartes Wrath.

An Inquisitorial investigation had revealed the makings of a cult in the Klenda VI Spacestation, a major trade hub vital to commerce in the sector. The cultists, quite marginal compared to the bustling population, were already mostly in hand from local authorities before the Scorned arrived. The cult was put down, brutally, in short order. But this time the killing didn't stop. Klenda VI burned, maddened Astartes ripped through the station in search of something, anything, to kill. The massacre lasted days, the eradication of the Klenda Cult being a side-effect of the station itself being torn apart from the inside.

The slaughter only stopped with the arrival of our loyalist chapter. The Scorned, respecting their fellow warriors of times past, politely informed them that they had the situation very much under control and there was no need to reinforce them. Convinced that those they were killing were either cultists or too weak as to make no difference, they were still surprised to find themselves on the receiving end of a full-scale assault.

Both sides view the other as the ultimate betrayers. The Loyalists because the Traitors escape is a stain upon their honour, and the Traitors because their opinion is that the Loyalists did actually strike the first blow. Plus fucking psykers man.

Of those members of the Renegades no completely infatuated with Chaos, they blame the Loyalists for forcing their chapter to make dark pacts with Daemon benefactors to secure their escape.

Hmmmm... actually... this could be interesting for the Warband, as I imagine Slaaneshi marines would highly prize trophies taken from them due to their attractiveness. So, they are slowly being driven away from their own territory, hence their low numbers and being forced to combat our Spehss Mehreens constantly as well as being harried by the Slaaneshi marines
