Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents. At this time the latest version is v1.9.9:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/12xqm1p2q69m392/Song_of_Swords.rar

Here's Ballad of the Laser Whales' latest version: https://www.mediafire.com/?rtbjk51jnm2wv8a

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:
http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

I'm working on Schools and Proficiencies right now to try and get rid of some of the detritus.

Basically Primaries and Secondaries served no purpose, and a lot of the wording is archaic, as you guys have been saying recently. Also, adding Proficiencies to existing Schools has gone unaddressed for too long.

Abridged version: You have to level the proficiency to at least 50% of the School's level, and then pay the School's basic cost. Then the Proficiency enters the School and is raised up to the School's level.

Can you give us an abridged version of your plans on how this is changing, too?
>>
>>45241993
Basically there are no primary or secondary proficiencies anymore. You just have Profs in the School which are all at the School level. The cost of adding proficiencies to the school have been reduced to compensate for this.

This really simplifies the whole process for beginners. Making a school sort of goes like this.

1: You want a School
2: You pick a School
3: You pick the Proficiencies you want up to the limit of Profs for that School. If you're human, these are free. If you're not, each one costs 1 Arc.
4: You pay the base cost for the School. If there's an additional cost for Profs, you pay that too.
5: You have a School at level 1.

So, as it's come up before, the current skill system for SoS (and by extension also Weltraumwal) is a bit awkward. It's technically functional, but also cumbersome and not very engaging.

So I sat down and tried to make something principally similar but a bit more versatile and lightweight, on the off-chance that I stumble upon a feasible idea or two in the process. It's sacrificing quite a bit of granularity, but should all around be easier to handle. If nothing else, it'd save space on the character sheet.

Note that this is all pretty prototypical, so the particular numbers and definitions for skills are by no means intended to be set in stone, they should just give a general idea for the overall ballpark this is aiming for.

I like limiting dice. One of my players minmaxed like fucking crazy and has a theoretical maximum of something like 26 dice to persuade people. That's crazy, both in my inability to reasonably challenge the character and in logistics at the table.

For the purposes of combat, I'd probably put it into the Warfare section.
>>
>>45285169
Good shit, anon. Good shit.
Once Jimmy gets the doc and starts incorporating bits from CotV, with this, I think SoS 2.0 could be a huge shift towards quality.

I wonder if the skill list isn't pared down too much here, but I can say that it was very hard to be a skilled person in 1.9.9. Much more than a deadly person.
At least we aren't GURPS
>>
>>45285169
I hate to be that guy as I obtain am and I get that this is just a draft but assistants with two ranks in a skill are only as good as untrained and because SoS rounds down those with one are worse because they do nothing.
>>
>>45286270
It's probably a bit too obscure, but the idea is that each level in a skill gives you +2 to the skill rating, i.e. the number of dice. So an assistant with level 1 in a skill would contribute 1 die, one with level 2 would contribute 2 dice and so on.

Can someone tell me what it is that the 1330 knight is wearing on top of his mail? An arming doublet? A brigandine? Any ideas where I could find more drawings and photos of it?
>>
>>45297794
It's most likely supposed to be a brigandine. 14th century was the time when transitional armour was in full swing, where people started augmenting the regular hauberk of maille with a variety of other pieces.
>>
>>45297794
Coat of plates, I guess

Coat of Plates, which is is pretty similar to a brigandine except the plates are much larger. The plates are also attached to the outer layer of fabric/leather only, rather than being snadwiched between two layers are is often common on brigandines.

Most reconstructions of CoPs take their inspiration from the battlefield excavations of Wisby (1361) in Sweden. They were old-fashioned by 1361 but a large selection of styles that are good representatives of CoPs in use decades previously were found at the stite.

Imagine you had early guns (early 16th century level), only the only thing you needed to fire them was a bullet and a separate "explosive" cartridge thing. How likely would it be that loading mechanisms that were near the trigger of the gun (e.g. bolt, breach) would be developed if literally everyone rode horseback?

Bear in mind I know less than nothing about guns (hence "near the trigger").

Basically you mean if breech-loading guns could be made with 16th-centruy level tech?

Essentially, it's not impossible (hell, the very first cannons in the early middle ages were breech-loaded), but it won't work well. It's not like the basic principle of the thing is beyond the tech, but as usual the devil lies in the details. The main problem is that if you have a breech that in some way can be opened, you're introducing an escape point for the gas. That's bearable with a small hole that connects the pan to the barrel, but if you've something like a bolt-action or break-action, the gas can escape along the entire seam. This is particularly problematic with black powder, since it burns relatively slowly, so that you'll have still-burning or not yet unburnt powder coming the user's way.

Coincidentally, such a gun actually existed (though it came later than in your example), the Dreyse Needle Gun. The basic idea was quite ingenious: Bundle black powder, bullet, and primer together in a paper cartridge, and strike with a needle through the cartridge to set off the primer that's glued to the bullet.
While it did offer an excellent rate of fire for its time, it ran into exactly the problem described above: A lot of gas escaped through the breech, leading to markedly lower muzzle velocities and as such lower effective range than competing designs. Also, the needle had a habit of breaking.

The thing that eventually turned made breech-loading feasible was using brass as the material for the casing. The nice thing about brass is that it's nice and flexible. So when the charge is set off, the gas pressure causes the casing to expand until it sits flush against the chamber and seals the whole thing off, so that none of the gas can escape the wrong way. Once the bullet has left the barrel and the pressure decreases, the casing will shrink back down to its original dimensions, making it easy to extract.

>Any ideas where I could find more drawings and photos of it?

Here's a set of reconstructions of the CoPs found in the Visby graves: http://www.hoashantverk.se/hantverk/hoas_rustningar/index.html

As most of the finds IIRC are just the metal plates, with the leather or fabric cover long gone, the shells are probably somewhat speculative at times. In particular I suspect that that using leather for nearly all of them may not reflect period practice, from what I've understood odds are that cloth would have been the more common material there.

As for the relationship between CoP and brigandine, the former would be the immediate precursor to the latter.
>>
>>45298833
Excellent, thanks for all the info anon. Seems like it'll work fine, then -- the guns run on magic that works by exerting force along a direction, so there's no gas to escape.
>>
>>45298694
Breech loaded cannons go back to the early 15th century, and the earliest evidence I've heard of for breech loading in hand-held guns is form the 1440's, using the mechanism seen here. Going by naval guns from the general era, that removable chamber piece is probably one of many, kept pre-loaded. So essentially primitive cartridges.

The big thing for cavalry is probably developing a lock that doesn't require a smouldering match, and which has a pan cover to keep the priming powder in place as you ride around. Ie the wheellock, which did turn up around the early 16th century. Getting the pan cover in place so you can just swap cartridges, crank it up and fire without priming may take some tinkering, but should be entirely possible in that time if a customer really wanted.

I'm far less certain about where clock making was at the time, which would seem like the relevant bit if you want the spring to last for multiple shots without re-winding.

One thing to keep in mind is fouling, shooting more than a dozen shots without a thorough cleaning of the barrel is probably outright dangerous (unless you start using severely undersized bullets, diminishing power and utterly mauling the accuracy), and many in the 16th century appear to have considered around half a dozen shots to be all you wanted to put through a gun in a session.
>>
>>45298942
Would cleaning remain a problem if no gunpowder or other chemical explosives were used?
>>
>>45299050
Not unless whatever kind of magic you're using leaves some kind of residue behind.
>>
>>45298885
Basically magically powered gauss guns? I can dig it.
>>
>>45301309
Sort of. The magic works by forcing the bullet to materialise with great speed *somewhere* in front of it. As in, it could be three hundred thousand miles to the left, but it will be in front of you. In order to guide the bullet, you have to confine it (as it can't materialise through solid metal).

Later guns forego the bullet and momentarily convert a localised tube of space into the essence of fire.

Both of these work essentially by messing with the records of the daemons that keep the whole world in filing cabinets.

>>
>>45304230
Sorcery has great difficulty controlling air pressure, which makes emulating the exact mechanics of a firearm difficult--but it has been done. Zoph Zavile of Kar-Druss designed what amounts to an air-gun that automatically refills its pressure chamber over time, not by directly controlling the pressure, but rather by using sorcery to power a small pump fitted to the weapon.

The result allows the weapon to shoot a round that can pierce a wooden plank at a thousand yards every three seconds or so, from a gravity-operated magazine that extends from the top of the weapon.

However, equipping an army with such weapons would be impossible--they would suck so much flow out of the local warren that they would all slow their workings to a crawl if you had more than ten of them or so in the area. They are also enormously expensive.

Only a few dozen have been made, either by Zavile himself or by his apprentices and colleagues, mostly as hunting weapons for nobles. One made its way as far as the Krajina, where it is owned by Baron Arkham of Redwater. Others may have found their way into still stranger hands...

How about Pyromancy, could you create small fireballs instead of having to load powder?
>>
>>45311684
Pyromancy doesn't "set" well in complex devices, but a pyromancer could design a weapon for his own use that he activates not through any mechanism, but simply by willing the powder to ignore.

This would make it more reliable, and probably more accurate since there would be no flash on the firing end of the gun, and no trigger to pull, potentially disrupting one's aim.

I was totally talking about a personal device of the 'mancer.

Jimmy have you considered using meme magic to support your Kickstarter?

What is meme magic? Pyromancy?

I have to get my Saracen roommate to translate this for me. I wonder where the newscasters are from. One guy in the comments is saying Algeria.

No, that's magic fueled by memes

Holy shit, the chances for that series of events to happen...

Now here's the real question though; did an extra dimensional being with no concept of human interaction latch on the Bane psychic beacon or did Baneposting create an entity that used CERN's energy from the breach to try and manifest?

There's also things like /mu/'s Bomb Jovi and that one musician who died late last year.

It's basically the hundred monkeys on typewriters thing. If you go through a sufficient number of iterations of random events, sooner or later you'll end up with a pattern just by coincidence.

Basically bringing about something very unlikely by turning support for it into a meme. Since people don't meme rationally, you can subconsciously herd people into doing your bidding against what should be their better judgement.

Donald Trump is usually heralded as a master wizard of meme magic, because he has convinced the alt-right that he's the second coming of Adolf Hitler instead of what he is--a moderate liberal with a loud voice. He has done this through meme magic. By making his ascension a meme, people who would never have supported anybody have come out to back him.

Iowa was a grim warning. A New York city-slicker who entered a church twice in his life (once for each wedding) lost by ONE delegate in the Cornpicker state.

The power is real. Jimmy must not be allowed to play with this kind of energy.

Meme magic is the ability to make your followers believe your every bed-wetting is a master political machination.

Goddamn, can you imagine how damn terrifying this would be as a sharpshooter's weapon? Just patrolling around some day when suddenly people just start dropping like a full company opened fire, but there's no cloud of smoke or anything that could even tell you which way to run. It's like that one napoleonic air rifle on crack.

It's Tuesday so can you try to make some nonsense up this week Jimmy?

King in the center was a popular northern pagan dance play for kids, before the death of their gods. The titular "King in the center" has become a deity for a cult that can be found dancing the old dance.

They say the better you dance and sing, the closer to center of the dancing ring you are drawn. Nobody has danced or sang their way to the dead center, yet.

Needs some sort of Animal centered skill category, to account of training, knowing, or riding beasts.

Something of the Occult is also probably called for.
