Why the FUCK do people get doodles on the cards they buy? do

The most expensive card I even had anything drawn on is a pack rat. I traded my pack rat to a guy at the show who is pretty cool and told him he HAD to sign it. I have done this with a zendikar forest, a boomarang, rugged highlands, and a ravens crime.

So I can understand having signatures or art on your cards, but not anything that is valuable, and if its art and not a signature it better be good and not something awful like that.

Maybe some people don't see MtG cards as an "investment".

Art extensions can look pretty good, but nothing that fundamentally changes the art of the card.

The one area where I'll give some leeway for drastic changes is when a card has suffered some superficial damage that the new art either covers up or integrates into a piece.

I believe you can, so long as the mana cost name text box ect are not covered in any way, like in op. But I can see it being something judges would be called over frequently for especially at higher rules levels.

It's actually just name and mana cost that need to be uncovered, text box technically can be covered - but ANY alter needs to be cleared with the judges beforehand, to ensure there isn't any kind of problem in regards to out of game information (writing USE ON CARD X), marked cards (weighing it more), or really tasteless stuff (no nudity and stuff like that)

I planned on getting a local artist to custom paint my affinity deck, pic related is her style of painting, but I decided I didn't like playing affinity anymore. I might get her to alter my future sight goyfs, snapcaster and cryptics though.

You could at least find a good alter to poke your opinion at rather then the shit you found, alters can be a neat way to make a card yours, especially if its some cheap card you could care less about the cost of losing but is a key part of your deck, something like lingering souls or grapeshot. Or commander cards sense you only have one of a card why not make your dispel or counterspell look nice.

I have one altered card, not counting artist signatures.

It's a Nylea, God of the Hunt that I brought to GP Portland and had altered by the artist, who basically gave added definition to her armor and made her bow extend past the frame of the art.

I collect Wastelands so I had my friend alter a playset of mine to be the 4 seasons.
