Sure, as long as you limit it to short-range teleportation only. I'm in a Pathfinder game right now with a character who's rocking Dimensional Slide and the Conjuration schools teleportation special ability... but both only have a range of about 30 feet and the GM's imposed some rules such as it not being able to go through walls/solid objects or be used to escape grapples or things like that.

I guess it's more fair to call it a close-range blink or dash than a teleport... kinda like a ship activating a warp drive, but yeah.

Also, has stabbing somebody with a pair of scissors like that ever actually hurt somebody in a considerable way? Most scissors aren't actually sharp enough to break skin for this exact reason.

I say players can just do what they like (within reason, run it by the DM). A lot of hypothetical questions you see here imply the asker is afraid of some self-imposed rules from browsing /tg/ too much.

As long as you have fun, and don't resort to "teleports behind you and slices you into a million pieces with my katana" every single encounter then there should be nothing to worry about. Hell, why not utilize it like a blink like >>44763145 said? Use it to swiftly warp from hanging platforms to achieve higher ground (bonus points if you are a ranged fighter). As long as you are creative, play to the appropriate flaws (Nightcrawler had the risk of becoming trapped within walls) and not treat it as a god-mode power, then by all means. Tabletop is all about fun above all else.

>never got into a fight in 3rd grade where a kid stabs you in the stomach with some scissors so you have to hit him with the stapler until he passes out

Seriously, though, it's very easy to stab someone with scissors, because they are pretty rigid and generally sturdy, the fact that the "point" isn't sharp doesn't matter as the surface area is small enough to put all of the energy in a small enough space so it'll go straight into soft tissue.

Not playing a wizard, just a mage... but yeah, I use it mainly to get out of range of the melee fighters and launch my spells from safety.

I'm aware Fly could do the same exact thing, but my group kinda looks poorly upon the use of Flight for various reasons, so this seemed like a more toned-down alternative.

One who got into stupid fights about mundane things? Yes.

He knocked my juicebox from the table so I shoved him against a desk. He did indeed stab me with a pair of scissors, and boy is it an ugly scar. I didn't hit him with a stapler, though, it was the teacher's thermos.

But anyone should know the efficacy of any object when it comes to stabbing, it isn't that complicated.

> the fact that the "point" isn't sharp doesn't matter as the surface area is small enough to put all of the energy in a small enough space so it'll go straight into soft tissue.
Yeah, but that's what sharpness is. The point insn't small enough with the amount of energy you can generate with a pair of scissors like that. You can jab somebody and it might hurt if you get them in a good spot. You were never stabbed as a child, some other dumb kid hit you and it hurt.

In real life you also have to consider that slots of purpose built knives can't easily penetrate your average coat, and that a single stab wound isn't really the sort of thing that can immediately disable a human being unless you're using a hell of a knife and/or manage to sever somebody's spinal column or somesuch.
>>
>>44763465
>>44763482
Bad phrasing, sorry. I meant literally any class that fought from afar as it makes more sense for them to have that kind of maneuver in my eyes.
I completely agree that Flight is stupid, I spent most of my time in Pathfinder as a Witch just flying out of range and cackling my opponents to death. We don't really talk about Witch any more.

This thread makes me want to try blinking the next time I play a caster, but first I need to try my "Armour Up/Garrosh" character in my friend's animu homebrew (Buso Renkin I think, but I don't care I just want to become a human tank) first.

If you're playing a Wizard, take Conjration (Teleportation) as your skill.

If you're playing an Arcanist, take the "Dimensional Slide" exploit.

Arcanists can get both by taking "School Study". Wizards can get both by taking the Exploiter archetype and taking School Study.

Both classes need "Dimensional Agility" to act out the rest of their turn after teleporting (especially important for the Conjuration teleport, since it's a swift action you can use to get out of melee range at the start of your turn, rendering concentration checks and Attacks of Opportunity moot).
>>
>>44762988
What is 'edgelord' about teleporting? Stop misusing the word 'edge', it identifies you as a retard.
>>
>>44762988
Yeah, just play a character who's a bit of a bumbling idiot with no idea how use his teleportation properly. Like he can warp out of the way of a bullet but gets stuck up a tree, or lands on top of the bad guy.
>>
The teleporting player must understand there is a time to distance ratio for which they are stuck in between dimensions during travel. More similar to the Chrono Soldiers in Red Alert 2. For a very short distance, the phase gap is mere seconds. To travel across the map their is a phase gap of up to two minutes. In turn-based games this would be represented by how many movement units travelled vs turns spent during the phase-out. An apparition of the player will take the place of the landing zone and depending on the level of a character there is a scatter roll. An apprentice will roll 3d6 and pick the highest distance then roll for direction travelled. A master would only roll 1d6, and choose to re-roll for a better - or worse - result.
>>
>>44763330
Its not. He didn't know who his parents were. And Instead of being an edgelord when he found out, he was like, meh, that's sad, oh well time to go shooting around the world in a hi-tech plane with lycra clad hot chicks. My life is swell.

Does it count if it's a parody? Like, Iji has Assassin Asha. I mean, he's explicitly a bad guy so he sorta gets a free edge pass. Only the narrative doesn't agree with him and all of his coworkers think he's retarded. To be fair, he kind of is.

For context, he's an alien assassin. Assassins get teleportation devices. Asha prefers a No More Heroes style or Naruto style definition of "assassin" to the actual "stealthy efficient killer" definition. He lost an arm telefragging himself into a wall while trying to Nothing Personnel an opponent. He learned nothing from this.

>>
>>44764299
Not to mention he's literally retarded in that he could probably kill Iji if he was unretarded enough to understand the concept of 'death of a thousand cuts', swallowed his dumbfuck pride, and just dodged the damn shotgun.
>>
Make good use of it out of combat rather than making it full on *teleports behind you and unzips katana*. The next obvious routes would be to be a jewel thief or a prankster, but those are damned cliches.Your character can teleport; Have some fun with that shit in more mundane or practical situations. Someone's going for shotgun in the car and is going to leave you crammed between the hulking meat tank and the guy with the concerning collection of knives in his coat? *poof* Shotgun's mine now. Want to make reservations at an inn so your group doesn't have to sleep in the damned rain? Send Terry the Teleporter up ahead with some cash for rooms and a chunk of supplies to lighten the load a bit, maybe have him order food for everyone while he waits.
Even if you chose to use the ability for serious situations only you could still avoid going edgelord by being clever or subtle with teleportation. A teleporter makes a damn good spy or hit and run fighter. They could wear down an enemy group to the point of retreat and simply pursue them until they dropped from exhaustion or fucked up. It also does wonders for a psychological approach if you've got to take out that group or someone that's well guarded/paranoid: Just constantly stay in the peripheral vision of the target. When they turn around? *poof* you're still in their peripheral until the call attention to you, at which point you disappear completely. Just repeat that until the target has a fucking nervous breakdown or is considered to be mad or overly paranoid and ultimately ignored.
>>
>teleporting behind someone and attacking them is now edgy

Sooner than you think, Satan. You of all people should know that "deceptive" (read: anything that isn't a straight up face to face brawl) is looked downed upon in most of society. Though the main issue in this case isn't so much the fact that it's teleporting to both avoid a hit an score one of your own, it's that it's the generic animu 2cool4u move that's done by every brooding dark past filled character ever. It's one thing to teleport to barely avoid being cleaved in two and score a glancing blow of your own, it's another thing entirely when you teleport and calmly and effortlessly slit your enemy's throat with some cringe inducing one liner.

>>
>>44762988
They have to account for the position of everything before they teleport. The rotation of the earth, its orbit around the sun, and the sun's position in the galaxy. Screw up the map and they die alone in the depths of space. Basically it requires too much concentration and is too risky to teleport 10 feet to stab a guy.

Don't forget that the climax of his character arc was LITERALLY to tactically kill himself. Not really a good example of "not an edgelord."

The problem with teleportation is that it's used in a 'ha ha I dodged you' kind of sense in most cases. Because really, that's what it's best used for in combat. An excuse to never actually get hit by anything isn't really cool. It isn't even acrobatically dodging shots or something - it's just showing up in another location the moment someone tries to attack you.

And it's made even worse that most characters end up using this to act nonchalant and be all uppity and superior to whoever they're fighting.

I find that teleportation powers in fiction is too "safe". The teleporter always only moves what's desired, their body or the target's body. No worries about accidentally teleporting parts of the floor or missing and teleporting their torso and arms but everything below the knee is cut off. Or trying to teleport themselves and having to picture their exact body shape at the moment (along with inertia) of the teleportation so they don't accidentally lose an arm or a leg.

There's never any teleportation errors either, the target always arrives exactly as they were so nobody comes back inside out or scrambled hamburger because the teleporter was distracted.

Teleportation is always portrayed as safer than walking.

Realise that Kuroko never teleported behind people and in-universe she's just an meh tier teleporter
>>
>>44766452

Iji actually covered that.

Assassins need to very carefully memorize the area around themselves to avoid telefragging themself.

It's why they won't actually follow you out of an area generally. As you've entered an area they don't feel safe teleporting in.

Asha is considered utterly insane because he teleports into places he barely knows. He's also only got one arm. These things are linked.

You're kidding right? She already has a strong ability and makes excellent tactical usage of it in a variety of situations. She also beat the only other in-universe teleporter shown, who was picked and trained specifically to beat her no less. If you don't like her that's fine but by any measure she's top tier in-universe and definitely in the running for best teleporters in general.

And yeah, she has teleported behind people before, she just doesn't do it often because if she's fighting weaklings there's no need and if they're tough then being behind them usually wouldn't matter.

>UHH I MEANT SHE'S NOT THE STRONGEST PERSON IN THE WHOLE CANON LOOK HOW STRONG MAGIC IS
If you're going to call her a bad teleporter then don't start comparing her to the entirety of all powers of all types. I'm sure even if I respond to you reasonably you'll just move the goalposts even further but here goes anyways.

Magic isn't even that OP overall, there are just some extremely high level users, just like there are high level espers. She would get blown the fuck out by accelerator too, that doesn't mean she's a bad teleporter. Besides, she never really fights against magic users, when she does interact she's mainly doing her job as a cop and evacuating people or buying time, not trying to fight.

Honestly she's probably one of the best characters to actually fight magic, most mages take time to cast, she can close the distance before they get the chance. spells that require glyphs and marks and what not would be trivial to her because she can teleport items into other items, ruining the framework from a distance. If nothing else, most magic can be dodged by regular ass people, it would have no chance of hitting her.

That's not to say that an angel coming down wouldn't be able to rip her to shreds because yeah, there are a few OP things on the magic side, just like there are a few OP things on the esper side. But overall she's the best teleporter in canon, and still high tier in terms of general power level.

I don't care if he get's stabbed, I don't want to be shot.
>>
>>44766744
Oh for sure, she's top tier as a teleporter, but shit tier as a human being.

although I did appreciate the dynamic between her off duty and on duty. I like characters that are extremely competent and serious when the situation calls for it, but among friends are ridiculous and never act serious. Usually acting absurd specifically because they want to put their friends at ease and keep them from getting involved in the aforementioned serious business. The competent fool is a fun character type.

That being said, I don't think she's the best example of that archetype, the constant molestation is cute to a degree but still cringey.

Slashing with a knife will have a hard time getting through a thick leather coat or a few layers of fabric, but pretty much any knife made of decent steel with a point on it is gonna go through any everyday clothing. I can see a motorcycle jacket or maybe sports pads stopping one, but nothing else.

Secondly, stab wounds almost never come alone due to the nature of knives. It's very easy to get a half a dozen stabs in before someone can react to your presence, especially with adrenaline flowing.

Also, scissors are too blunt to break skin? Really nigga? Safety scissors aren't gonna go through skin, but if you are anywhere but an elementary school and you have safety scissors you should have left the helmet on and stayed home with mom.

>can only contact things she's in direct contact with
>easily neutralized through visual deception
>incapable of using her ability when distracted, surprised or in intense pain because she can't make proper calculations
Pls. The only reason she beat Awaki (who is a better teleporter than Kuroko in basically all aspects) is because the latter was going easy on her until the last moment and had a severe trauma that kept her from being able to teleport herself properly.

>The only reason she beat Awaki
>reason she beat Awaki
>beat Awaki
She won, she's the better teleporter. "I'm so strong I wasn't serious at the start" means she doesn't use her powers efficiently and is therefore worse at using them. And yeah, she has trauma that prevents her from using her powers well, meaning she's not as good. Furthermore she's not easily neutralized through visual deception, you're pulling that out of your ass, and of course she can't sue her power when thoroughly distracted by intense pain. That's standard for pretty much all characters in the entire show, and all teleporting characters in any canon for that matter, including Awaki.

If I got a foot chopped off I can say "I'm actually the fastest runner I just can't run fast because of my leg" but it doesn't mean I'm going to win any races. And if I lose the race because "I was just playing in the beginning" it means I'm still a shitty racer.

Awaki might have more raw power, but she doesn't use it well, and can't use it fully, doesn't think tactically, and doesn't have any amount of physical combat ability.

Kuroko on the other hand makes excellent use of her power both by using it intelligently, and by combining it with physical ability. Awaki just waves a wand and drops stuff, that's it, and she needs a shit load of crutches just to do that because she's too scared of fucking up.

We're not measuring the power alone, it's the character and how they use it. Kuroko is the BETTER teleporter.
>>
>>44767609
Kuroko won on guts. Gunha would have been proud.

As far as actual "power" she was outclassed man. Awaki is almost level 5 man, its stated multiple times.
>>
>>44767649
power including technique and everything that these mathematically created espers are measured by, I should have said.
>>
>>44767649
Having more power doesn't matter if your skill is much lower. Heck, the original material starred a level 0 who ended up beating the strongest level 5 alone.
>>
>>44767609
>She won, she's the better teleporter.
Didn't she only "win" in the sense that she made Awaki freak out and lose control her powers for a short time? She ultimately got shot and only survived because she was saved by Misaka and Touma. Awaki just left and would've gotten away with everything if she didn't get fucked up by Accelerator.
>>
>>44767609
>Furthermore she's not easily neutralized through visual deception
There was that one time she got fucked up by a random thug with weak light manipulation powers. She had to literally bring a building down on him to win.
>>
>>44763060
>>44763108
if you read the description of the book it sound really interesting, the guy might know his shit and just because he holds a katana dose not mean i wouldent like to chase around chaves with a claymore yelling something about my ancestors
>>
>>44767649
I'm not arguing that she doesn't have more raw power. Awaki obviously does, but Kuroko uses her power better. Awaki is level 5 because she was put in the system and forced to train like a weight lifter, increasing the limits of her power but not her skill at using it in real world situations.
That's probably the best comparison. Awaki is the weightlifter, Kuroko is the marital artist. Of course Awaki has a bigger "teleport muscle", but Kuroko has no small amount of power herself and also knows how to use it to it's full advantage whether it's cutting a building down with panes of glass or enhancing physical combat with blink strikes.

>>44767668
No that's bullshit, she wins in terms of raw power but falls laughably short in technique, she has no technique at all and wins (or tries to) on the merit of "my power is stronger" despite not knowing how to use it effectively.

>>44767707
Fair point, There are too many variables in that fight to try and prove anything either way, after all anyone could have shot her with a gun and it wouldn't make them a better teleporter.
but ultimately it comes down to what you consider to be a "good teleporter". Someone who can only move objects around her, and has no skill or creativity about it. or the teleporter who can blink herself around and comes up with solutions on the fly.
>>
>>44767698
Touma is the specialist of special cases. Hamazura is a better example. With absolutely nothing to his name, he beat possibly the most insane level 5, twice, then added her to his harem.
>>
>>44767753
>Someone who can only move objects around her, and has no skill or creativity about it. or the teleporter who can blink herself around and comes up with solutions on the fly.
Awaki does develop more skill later in the novels, though. She has to improvise sometimes because her crutches are used against her and at one point powers through her fear to beat down an opponent.
>>
>>44767725
That's not neutralizing her powers, or her for that matter, she could still teleport just fine, she just couldn't tell exactly where he was which made it near impossible to hit him, not a teleporter exclusive weakness. Also, the guy staged the battle there because it wouldn't work anywhere else.

And of course, the reason I consider her a good teleporting character is her creative use of her powers. Yeah, she had to bring down the building to win, that's not a sign of weakness, it means she figured out a way to beat him and then did it. Maybe it's just me but that was my favorite part of the railgun anime. The way they didn't just give regular superpowers and have them play out in the regular way. everyone got a way of "tweaking" physics and has to figure out how to make it work effectively. Creative use of a weaker power will always be better than boring use of a strong power. It's the classic /tg/ argument honestly. Which is better loot? a magical item that provides interesting utility, or +1 to damage?

His "weak light bending power" is also proof that the level ranking is not a measure of actual capability, it's a measure of science nerd numbers. Visual distortion can be insanely powerful if you put it in the right context, like against a teleporter in a dark building. Or it could be worthless if you're fighting someone like railgun who could just zap everything.

>>44767830
Haven't read the novels so I'll take your word for it.
>>

What happens is some people try to look "cool" by imitating Japanese boys cartoons. With teleportation, they do this by teleporting behind their target, cutting them at least once with a curved sword, then saying a one-liner that they think sounds "cool".

It ends up looking ridiculous.

Anon, I hate to tell you this, but you are extremely out of the loop. Like, 10+ years outside of the loop. At some point you miscalculated your trajectory, and now you don't have enough fuel to get back in the loop. Functionally, there's little difference. Yugo literally Nothing Personnel's Qilby at one point using those portals.

I mean, Nox couldn't actually teleport either but you can't seriously argue that there is a functional difference between moving from point A to point B instantly, and moving from point A to point B so quickly that from the perspective of everyone else it was instantaneous.
>>
>>44770820
>Yugo literally Nothing Personnel's Qilby

Nope, it's a double reverse Nothing Personnel. Yugo vanishes, and Qilby immediately spins around and raises his guard because he expects the Nothing Personnel, but then Yugo just appears about a foot in front of where he was in the first place, now at Qilby's back.

I think one of the problems is that many of the "clever" uses for teleportation such as teleporting the bad guy high in the air and let him fall to his death or teleporting boulders and cars over him have been shared so widely that these uses are not seen clever anymore but as something so obvious you would have to be an idiot to not think of within 10 minutes of getting teleportation powers. Its a side effect of having " come up with gamebreakinig uses of the most restricted and useless power you can think of" threads.

There is a difference: you have to walk/fall through the portal, whereas the teleportation is instant. Even travelling through portals takes more time than the instant it takes you to teleport.

I played a teleporter once in a modern game way way back in the day. I think the key to creating them is first taking a normal human, applying teleportation, and then creating a tradeoff.

For example, my guy had a bunch of things that prevented teleportation from reaching the level of game-breaking.

>Teleportation causes motion sickness
I moved too fast for my sense to properly adjust, so continuous use, or rapid and repeated use without taking a moment for my senses to catch up would cause splitting headaches and eventually nausea

>Teleportation does not grant a stronger constitution
I had to rely on weapons, in this case a stun gun and a beatstick, instead of the usual super powers, meaning teleportation was more a tool than an actual weapon, and had to be used in conjunction with various abilities

>Teleportation displaces matter
This just meant I went 'POP' because I forced the air out of the space I was trying to occupy. No sneak attacks (unless I covered up the noise) and no teleporting behind people

As for the personality deficiency that Edgelords suffer, I countered that by being a sarcastic, but well meaning guy. I didn't have a terrible past, nor did I have an 'inner demon'. The edgiest thing I gave him was a reliance on drugs.

Tylenol, to be exact.

tl;dr
Yes, just give someone powers and make a character you can see yourself having a decent conversation with.

In City of Heroes I had a character who could teleport anything/everything and controlled the barriers between dimensions/realities.

The turnover was the fact that she could "see" most realities at once she had to devote most of her brainpower to cancel out the "noise" dimensions to focus on her own reality and lacked a lot of social skills.

The way she did it though was with portals and rifts and could only maintain them for a few seconds at most.
