Its the horses anon. They shoot the horses, knight falls down, gets trampled and becomes an unexpected speed-bump for other knights.

alright got it, superbows lost power over time.
That means you need to get a new superbow every year from the magicians, thus having always a fully powered superbow

Variable quality of armor, not bows losing their strength.

Crappy munitions plate would stop arrows at long range but they could still kill horses. At close range bows could pen it.

Hardened white plate though - that will bounce 180lb draw war bows at point blank.

This is my crossbow. There are many like it but this one is mine...
