It's an energy field, pretty much like a powermace. If it were a suit of armour it would probably roast its wearer alive or keep them in constant paralysis. A regular force field is enough of a shield to prevent a lightsaber, it's what the droidekas used.

I took this to mean that it works like the Long-Gun technology from Schlock Mercenary - you fire the weapon, and you fire through hyperspace to hit *any star system in the galaxy*. The Weapon was presumably almost totally stationary, in the middle of a dense star cluster, where hundereds of suns could be reached through sublight or only barely superluminal travel.

So it doesn't consume the Sun of the system it's firing at - that would be pointless. It consumes a different sun, umpteen thousand light-years away.

This is sufficiently threatening that it almost excuses "let's build an even bigger death star."

In the ANH novelization, Luke recognizes the lightsaber for what it is and Obi-Wan mentions how "it's still used in some galactic regions." Even with Jedi and the Force long forgotten, people know the basic idea of the lightsaber just like modern people now know how a sword is supposed to work, roughly.

We have no idea what his hand to hand capabilities are when unwounded. I'm pretty sure he was just seeing if he could be useful enough to warrant future investment, especially since Kylo was very clearly torn up about his decisions.

I think it suffices plenty most days just because of how few even half-trained Jedi there were running around; a shitty skill is sufficient when nobody else has the necessary skills to counter it.

Ren's light saber is an old Sith design. It uses a shattered crystal and they put too much power into it. The hilt bits are venting excess energy from the blade.

The guy does look like a goofball. A lot of people won't notice that that's the point. Kylo Ren is a tryhard edgelord who really wants to be a badass sith lord, but he's a shrill nerd with emotional issues and he's nowhere near as badass as his idol in person, and he secretly can't bring himself to be as much of an asshole as Vader did because he's just not that much of an asshole.

I felt that the film was trying to establish that Kylo Ren IS very powerful with the force, but inexperienced / young and in emotional turmoil. I felt that there were multiple times during his fight with Rey where he could have killed her, but you can tell during that fight (in addition to his being badly wounded) how unsure of himself and torn he is.

It's also worth mentioning that I believe Kylo Ren to be much stronger in the use of the Force than he is at dueling / light saber combat. I was pretty upset that there wasn't more about Finn learning to be a normal human being after being raised to be a murderhobo his entire life. Actually my second complaint after the plot itself is that there was way, WAY too much stuff trying to fit into this movie. After reading a damn good article as to why Empire was the first true modern blockbuster, I believe this movie underwhelmed me because it kept taking ideas from New Hope without grasping what made it different from what you saw before it, and what you see today. Back in the OT when they flew through the asteroid field and c3-p0 rattled off some ridiculous odds they could then show the ship weaving around a bunch of rocks and shit and little asteroids wanging off the hull and ties and star destroyers getting rekd which all conveys a genuine sense of danger.

With a risky hyperspace jump it's just "hey if we do this we'll almost certainly die." *click* "well, we didn't die".

In either case success is garunteed, because even if you're making a tragedy where the heros die, they definitely aren't going to be killed by crashing the ship halfway to the climax, but in one scenario there is palpable tension over it from presentation and in the other there isnt.

Eh its a good point on the storytelling. I see it as only adding to the myth/coolness of Han. I'd be surprised if we saw it again in the film. There were much more things I found cringey in the film. Too many dumb little jokes/pandering to kids (not that I have a problem with a few quips here and there and some like the stormtroopers walking away from the tantrum made me smile) but it felt a little forced at times.

But they were already in space. There was no "too close to a planet" involved in leaving the docking bay. It was more the "docking bay" part that was spooky.

Presumably this is no worse an idea than leaving a closed docking bay by opening the throttle and bracing for impact.

Here are the elements of a Greek Tragedy:

No concern about "being too close to a planet" since they were already in orbit. It was obviously still dangerous, but I don't see any reason to assume it's much more dangerous than ramming your way out.

Getting too close to a planet may apply, but since the Weapon is hollow it might not be.

The primary dangers were getting past the shields, and not crashing into the planet at high speed or emerging from hyperspace while actually inside it. These both seem like they require about the same amount of skill and timing as, say, running across a busy highway without getting hit by a car. Closer to "hot shit" than "not shit."
