I was reading some old WDs, and this one hit me.

There are guides for building and playing with dangerous plants for death worlds.

This was 40k once.
To create stuff and have fun with stories and scenarios, not just to buy and win.

I wanted to share them with you, some of you may enjoy the spirit like i do.
Do you think are still usable?

>Also, nostalgia thread.

Bingo, thank you. I remember reading an article.from him about using plaster wedding cake pillars for terrain. Always remembered that one. Was it a good period for WD, or is this just rose tinted spectacles? I do remember picking up a WD for the first time in fucking years at GWs 30th anniversary or issue 300 or something and being fucking shocked by the shitty battle reports in particular.
>>
>>44187494
You can look him up to try and find some of his old ass articles.

I agree though. The last white dwarf I got was the massive multi board 8+ army 10k+ whatever points armageddon battle report which was amazing and I felt nothing could live up to that.

I should try to scan my old WDs or something.

You guys remember when they used to come out with mini-games for you to play? And they released all the bits you'd need WITH the magazine?

Like Brewhouse Bash? Remember that?
>>
>>44187579
Mordheim started out as one of those in Chapter Approved.
>>
>>44187592
Aww shit yeah. And when the game proper launched you got a free Aenur Sword of Twilight with the magazine.
>>
>>44187592

Battlefleet Gothic too, IIRC.

Shit, what was the one where you played as Dark Eldar gladiators?
>>
>>44187608
Arena of Blood.
>>
>>44187616

Fuck, that was a good one.

They kept that going for a while didn't they? I mean, the release a Gandalf v. Saruman minigame.
>>
>>44187607
Those were the days.

>>44187634
Probably. They started shying away from giving you paper tokens and what not to have a little complete game on its own though.
>>
>>44187553
Uck, I remember that devastator kit. Ammo feeds were so fiddly.
>>
>>44187648
You had to weigh all the bases down a ton and hope to god your pins were enough.

I do not miss metal/plastic hybrids.
>>
>>44187648
I like that they at least take the time to explain some of the design decisions though.
>Why do all the guys except ML pack metal backpacks? So we can balance your minis for you!
Always liked that. Also the DE article is awesome just to get a designers perspective.
>>
>>44187667
Actually, that particular kit wasn't as bad. The metal backpack counterbalanced with the gun pretty well.
>>
>>44187710
Until you moved them onto some kind of rough terrain, or someone shook the table.

Not as bad as some, but still.
>>
White Dwarf, in its glory days, was seriously my favorite thing ever.

Its really a testament to how times have changed. Back then they would show you how to make a grav-tank out of a used deodorant bottle.

NOW YOU MUST BUY EVERYTHING!!
>>
>>44187791
Same here anon getting my monthly White Dwarf was my favourite thing to do every week when I was a kid and just starting out playing 40k
>>
>>44187822

When I was a kid, my Nan brought me a White Dwarf subscription every year for my birthday. It was great. Monthly presents from her.

She passed away two years ago from Cancer. Had known for a while it was coming. I still get White Dwarfs sent to me. She'd paid out something like a five year subscription.

I don't read them anymore. But I can't bear to cancel it.
>>
>>44187341
I have a lot of old WD on hand - except in french.

From 2005 era
>>
>>44187842

Do old WD subscriptions become weekly WD subscriptions or monthly WV subscriptions?

We were experimenting with Warp Portals for some Chaos invasion scenarios.

Warp Portals are easy to make, help CSM as they have very little choices in transportation and they totally fit the Chaos theme.

They are basically Drop Pod, but without the storm bolter and can't transport troops.
They have some special rules.

- When a unit arrives from reserve, the controlling player may choose to make them coming out from a Warp Portal. If you have more than one on the table, you can choose which one.
- A Warp Portal can only materialize one unit each turn, and count as having a transport capacity of 10
- CSM units with the Daemons special rules (essentially the units that suck, like Possessed, Warp Talons and Mutilators) count as disembarking from an Assault Vehicle.
They also count as coming from the reserve in the turn the Warp Portal arrived to determine if they may assault (so they may not charge in the turn the Warp Portal arrived, but they can from the next turn).

Not sure how much it should cost and how it would work with Chaos Daemons.

I agree.
I read those old WD mostly for that.
It's like a mirror into a better 40k.

The best things is to see photos of those armies, that now are considered tiny but for the time were good enough.

You see a photo of an army made of Chaptain, two small Tactical squad, a rhino and a dread or termi/assault/bike squad, and read how this is the squad of chaptain Caius or whatever, and the owner that say how fun it was to make and use it, with all the conversions and kitbashing.

A complete army, enough to play in the weekends with friends.

Now that's barely a starting kit, and if you don't have at least a Super Heavy you are the last of the shits.
So sad.
>>
>>44188144
I remember when I was younger reading a White Dwarf with a battle report that was just this fuck-off crazy huge tank battle, I think the Demolisher had just come out and I remember thinking that it'd be neat to have a tank to go with my couple of Mordian Iron Guard squads.

Some of the old battle reports are really funny. I recall when the new Tyranids came out: The match pitted them against an Imperial Guard army with a small Deathwatch (About 6 models) contingent. By the end of the battle, the ENTIRE Guard Army was dead except for one Leman Russ and the Deathwatch, who were hard as nails.

Another one had a Black Templar battle report where the entire army died except for Grimaldus, the Emperor's Champion and the Chaplain, who gleefully murdered the Chaos army.

But at least he apologize to us and admit the judges were incompetent.

This was the designer notes from the release of the 3.5 CSM codex. The same issue had a basic painting guide for Black Legion and a much more complicated one by 'Eavy Metal for Abbadon and Ahriman, an Index Malleus article about demons of all shapes and sizes, and an essay by Pete Haines (the co-writer of the Codex) about his time playing the Iron Warriors and some of the behind the scenes descisions that led to fluff developments.

I've also got the issue with the Dev notes for the 4th edition codex here. As soon as I can get the scanner working I'll post it so you can compare and contrast.

was that the one where the Emperor's Champion single handedly took down a Defiler? The picture they used for that was sick.

Notice how many pages packed the old WD's were as well.

>>
>>44186865
I remember on the site they had articles on how to make creatures which would act like these plants. There was a big crab thing that looked like an aardman production, weird hounds that looked like a sheep with a crocodiles head and a tentacled spore thing made from a lotus pod and other bits.

There were modelling, painting, gaming articles. One that always stood out to me was a terrain article and it was a whirlwind that was bashed up then put on a belt sander at an angle. Then it was place on an MDF base and a big wire/putty tree was placed in it like it had grown out the ruined whirlwind. Hell I even remember the create your own tyranid game

>>44197907
If the hobby grows, they grow.
That was their golden age, because they cared, and so did we.
We know they tried.

Now they are making money, yes, but it's all about the hype, constant marketing and powercreeping.
But that's a short term solution, people eventually would like to play seriously, and for that you need a tight and balanced rule system OR a game people care about.

Right now they have none.
