10x the Adam Edition
Previous Thread: >>44108513
Discussion thread for Bioshock PnP system being homebrewed currently. Be it setting, mechanics or even discussion of the original games themselves.

>The Homebrew is up for review and testing folks! Let me know if anything needs adjusted or of any errors that need fixed. Currently on AR 1.0.4
>Playtest session December 18th at 4:30 EST on Roll20. Send New Homebrew Guy a pm for an invite. 1 player slot still open.

Updated with missing Drinkable Plasmid costs.
>>
>>44155551
fucking thank you, left the pc on last night, woke up to find the thread had vanished.
>>
>>44155551
Looks interesting, but I haven't got into all of the details yet, so here is some generic feedback.
At 100 pages please consider fixing your layout to include more compact tables, two column text, and/or smaller font sizes.
Also, the previous thread implies there has been a playtest session already.
Care to share the results?

I'd like to see a random roll table to help players create their setting

Region:
1. aerial
2. underwater
3. subterranean
4. volcano
5. pocket dimension
6. Newly discovered continent hiddenf rom the world at large

Location:
1. City
2. Mental Institution
3. Prison
4. War/Trenches/Jungle
5. Badlands/Wasteland
6. Laboratory

Run by:
1. Dictator
2. God King
3. Thoecracy
4. Superintelligent plasmid hating AI
5. Anarchy
6. Crime Boss

It wouldn't be necessary for everyone, but stuff like that might help springboard some ideas for people who don't want to play in one of the two game worlds already established.
>>
>>44155989
Players are:

1. Secret police/bounty hunters
2. Escaped prisoners/experiments
3. The resistance
4. Kidnappees from across time and space (via liz rifts)
5. have nots exiled out of setting/location
6.

Woot. Now we have 4. I'm Talkybitch McPossessiontits
>>
>>44156200
Looks like you've got a talker/possessor, stealthy guy and muscle. Whats that leave? Some sort of skill monkey/rogue? I could do that
>>
>>44155551
I'd like to see rules included, eventually, to play as rogue big daddies, little sisters, handymen and whatever the hell that fireman guy was as well as plasmid and tonic using splicers
>>
>>44155885
The file was made in a writer program as opposed to a proper PDF maker, so I'm still learning how to do layout whatnot. Any tips or links to resources to help with this would be appreciated.

The first playtest session was mostly character creation, but this upcoming friday will be the first real session. I'll have a general results post done up following.

Welcome to the game! You can make almost anything you want really. A scientist/technical skills monkey/hacker is the first thing that comes to mind over all, but play whatever you think you would like to.

>>44156291
That last one is already available. The regular Big Daddies and Little Sisters won't be happening, but Alpha Series might come as a later update during Beta. Handymen maybe after. Vigor Junkies are technically already doable with the Mutation mechanic.

>>44158076
There is already a face, yeah. So far as I know we don't have either hacking or lockpicking, so that concept sounds like it'd be distinct enough to bring its own stuff to the table. As for Skype, I'm afraid we have no real centralized method of contact at the moment. So far as I know anyway. It's mostly either messages via Roll20 or talking here in these threads.

Well I made my own. Tom ''Mac' McClure, reporter, muckraker, war correspondent (he's covered wars, y'know) and good friend and rival of Timothy Wales.

He's out to find his missing friend, as well as uncover the source of the civil war. By the end of the campaign he might have some of his anti Rapture, anti Ryan ideals challenged.

He can pick a lock, hack a terminal, shoot straight and throw a mean left hook. He's an aging man of action who came to Rapture seeking a world without war only to find mankind is the same fallible creature above or below the ocean.

Hype as fukk for this game lads

what sort of author is he? I imagine his sociopolitical views might run opposite to Mac's, leading to some fun instances where they favor opposing actions for the party.
>>
>>44161618
mystery, thriller, horror
He came to rapture in hopes of being it's first great author, and was handed a goldmine of subject matter with the dawn of plasmids
However, Ryan had him blacklisted after the culprit of his last murder mystery bared a slight resemblance to the man himself
In his words " >""Need not fear the censor" my sweet arse"

When choosing your starting plasmids, you'd have to pay for them, yes? From your starting cash total?
>>
>>44163406
Adam, not cash, but yes, your money and Adam must be used to buy all of your starting EQ and powers. Don't forget your cheats can get you more cash or Adam if you want.
>>

>>44163610
>Adam, not cash
Ah, of course.

There's a lot of options, you've done a good job desu senpai.
>>
>>44163610
Most Plasmids have more than one upgrade option. Is there any way to take more than one option at the same time?
>>
>>44164085
Trade 2 cheats in for 50 Adam. 50 for the Plasmid, plus 100 for the first upgrade will leave you with enough for the second after getting a bit with Cheats.

Make sure that you calculate your Adam cap results if you go beyond your starting 200. You might need to make a few more appearance checks if you do.

Don't forget to look at the Tonics or general purpose Splices either. Plasmids aren't the only things that require Adam to be purchased.
>>
>>44164237
>Make sure that you calculate your Adam cap results if you go beyond your starting 200. You might need to make a few more appearance checks if you do.

>>
>>44164993
Can I get some clarification on skill costs?
Do they cost 1 pt for rank 1, 5 points for rank 5?
Why would I pick brawl/boxing or brawl/streetfight instead of just brawl at a higher rank?
>>
>>44165410
1 point for each rank, 1 for rank 1, 1 for rank 2, etc
>>
>>44166399
Thanks.

>>44165410
>Why would I pick brawl/boxing or brawl/streetfight instead of just brawl at a higher rank?
And this? If it costs points to specialise into say, boxing, why wouldn't I just spend the points on making my general brawl better?

1 point brawl +1 point specialise into boxing vs a 2 point brawler, seems the two points would win. Not trying to be critical, just trying to understand. It's likely I'm missing something desu
>>
>>44166419
The specialization exceeds the normal 5 point limit, first of all. A skill might only go up to 5 normally, but Specialization gives you a bonus +1 to the skill when used in the specific circumstances of its use. A boxer will specialize in Brawl: Boxing, because they will ultimately roll 6 dice for it instead of 5.

At a base, a straight increase might be better, but you will want Specializations once you find a rhythm to certain skill usage that you tend to repeat often, That's the intent anyways.

>All those sweet sweet plasmids I can't buy because I don't want to go full splicer.

I think you've put together a game that will lead to some kickass characters and combos senpai
>>
>>44166492
>>44166523
Specializations are also not restricted by the rank of a skill, or the requirements to reach a certain rank with another skill to even purchase skill ranks. Say you wanted to put 5 points into Hacking, but you don't have spare points to buy 2 ranks in Security and Surveillance. You can buy 2 Specializations for Hacking instead to boost the skill usage up by 1 when Hacking specific devices instead. This allows you to come back and max the skill out later after you've done the needed study to get its final ranks.

You'll get there, little splicer. The itch only gets worse after the first taste after all...
>>
>>44166551
>but you don't have spare points to buy 2 ranks in Security and Surveillance. You can buy 2 Specializations for Hacking instead to boost the skill usage up by 1 when Hacking specific devices instead. ...ya lost me.
>>
>>44166626
To buy Ranks 4 and 5 of Hacking, you need 2 ranks in the Security and Surveillance skills. If you don't have the 4 points to throw into those, you can use Specializations to increase your talent with the Hacking skill by 1 against certain machines instead.
>>
>>44166648
I get it now, I didn't see certain skills had prerequisites. Thanks.
>>
>>44166648
So if I wanted Medicine 1, but didn't want to buy Science: Life 2, could I specialise instead to get Basic Fist Aid?
>>
>>44166729
No. To specialize in a skill's various aspects, you have to have at least 1 rank with the skill.

How do you get your hands on a genetic camera? I thought I'd try using one so you can test those rules, and it fits a reporter to have some photography skills.
>>
>>44167204
Currently there are no rules for acquisition. This is intentional though. I sort of want it to be a quest reward, since the rise of the war would make it a high profile item for purchase, so I imagine stock would be low and price would be high.

For the moment, any regular old camera can fit the bill for your concept, but.the special ones you'll have to find on more dangerous targets who can use them, or fashion one up yourself with a broken security camera and some other stuff.

Actions should be 2, not 3 (remember to always round down)

Willpower should be 7.

Momentum should be 2 with your extra 1 from cheats. Be sure to check the Momentum section in the Systems Basic chapter.

Also, as a side note, Photography is also a Focus of the Art skill. Might want to consider it as a selection if your character is a professional photographer as opposed to a freelancer. But that's just me...

So exactly how strong should plasmids and tonics get if you homebrew them? At what point do you say no, this is getting a little too OP?

With Elizabeth's existence their opens a wide range of possible powers, granted by slugs or otherwise, what realistically limits the amount of nonsense either players or npcs should be able to get up to?

As opposed to Exalted, DBZ or epic level DnD?

Just keep them in the realms of the original games.

Not unless the GM says so. I could ask to be taken to the marvel universe to inhale terrigen mists and be granted potentially planet affecting level powers.
Gm says get fucked, not happening.
Problem solved.

Also, if you want powers not from plasmids, not from the games, go play a dimension hopping M&M games. The whole point of >>44155551
as far as I can tell is to play in the city of Rapture, the atmosphere and narrative of Bioshock. You don't even have to use plasmids if you don't want to splice.

Also remember to include your adjustment penalty for your Appearance rolls. All characters start with a +5 if they take no extra Adam through cheats.

Thanks mates, it was a shame the plasmids/tonics/stuff that was discussed in teh first thread died, it was a fun exercise

Oh, did you finish the third one?
>>
>>44215083
There was never a consensus about what was the third, just people saying names of plasmids, so I just did the two you know.

Oh, I could've sworn we did
How about security bullseye/command?

So, remembering how in the original threads there was talk about alternate setting that fit the mold for a bioshock campaign I thought of one that sounds cool but I will need to flesh out.

It takes place in the early 1800 high up in the Rocky Mountains and is kind of a replacement gold rush. Except instead of just gold it's "Heaven's Gold: (name will probably change) which is a special type of gold-like metal that acts like adam when implanted in the body. So you would have prospectors flocking to the mountains to mine the stuff, a couple of companies who technically own most of the land and are trying to formalize the acquisition of the gold while cheating their employees of the lion's share, bandits and madmen preying on them, and finally some natives who know of the gold's power trying to fend off the white devil.

Any thoughts on what I have so far?

Still need to make the main person who is running the whole shebang from the background and what ideals they are following.

>bandits and madmen preying on them, and finally some natives who know of the gold's power trying to fend off the white devil.
This, especially, stiffens my dick for westerns/wild west.

>>44220777
>Still need to make the main person who is running the whole shebang from the background and what ideals they are following.
This'll be the crux of the whole thing. You need an antagonist who has radical beliefs, believes in them 200% who will kill for what he wants.

I'd rewatch Pale Rider if I were you...

I... have a terrible sin to confess Padre I have never seen this movie

as punishment my viewing shall occur thrice, and a re-watching of the rest of Clint's western to follow.

Pic related was going to be the foundation of the character, with a strong belief in the things a man should strive for to be successful, to leave a legacy and an impact on the world.
>>
>>44221139
>I... have a terrible sin to confess Padre I have never seen this movie
I was afraid that might be the case. Now I'll have to watch it again to make up for this affront.

>>44221139
>Pic related was going to be the foundation of the character, with a strong belief in the things a man should strive for to be successful, to leave a legacy and an impact on the world.

Perfect, well played, my friend.
>>
>>44220777
>a special type of gold-like metal that acts like adam when implanted in the body

I'd give it another, more industrial property that makes it so valuable to the world at large. Maybe the left over material from the refining process acts as an ADAM substitute, rather than the metal itself?
>>
>>44221139
This guy's personality and philosophy would make a good nemesis/AndrewRyan/Antagonist as well, especially in a more urban setting.
>>
I just had a strange idea: Gene Cleansing
At any gene bank, you can , for all intents and purposes, "unlearn" a plasmid or tonic
The price is somewhat steep, as it consumes all internal Adam for that plasmid/tonic and it's upgrades
However, it does lower your capstone
The player must then make a sanity and appearance roll, if they roll 51 or above, they suffer the same consequence for a failed roll of the same kind
If they roll 50 or below, they can make another appearance or sanity roll with their normal modifiers, a success allowing them to remove an insanity or deformity they'd previously acquired
What do you think?
>>
>>44223059
Mite b cool, but why would you want to unlearn a plasmid ever? Especially if it has a similar risk to splicing in the first place. Can't you just replace ones you don't use with newer ones at a genebank if you have limited slots? I bought bees first time through Bioshock and hardy used it (despite it looking dope as fuck), I just replaced it with more useful plasmids.
>>
>>44223084
Well, from a gameplay perspective, it lowers your adam capstone, and has the potential to unfuck some already fucked parts of your character
From a roleplay perspective, some people might not want to look like mutated freaks, and will take any chance they can get
>>
>>44223117
>has the potential to unfuck some already fucked parts of your character

I've never been a fan of the bruce banner effect. Once a body has been sufficiently warped, distorted, mutated and damaged, no amount of serums, cures or surgery can fix it (barring handwavium magic bullshit). I can't see the messed up slicers from Bioshock ever being made normal
___________________________________
^ All opinions. Feel free to disagree as you see fit.
I see the bioshock game as one long slide into fucked up splicer territory, it's only a matter of time before your character is an unplayable mess.
The you roll up new characters to kill your previous ones. Genius.
>>
>>44223171
Also a good idea
I figure, if they can repair the spliced to the point of inhumanity porter, they can reverse a tiny bit of the damage to a regular splicer
>>
>>44223028
How would you define this guys philosphy? Its bee a while since I watched it. Be the strongest, take what you can, stay strong so no one can knock you off the throne?
>>
So, NewHomebrewGuy, the next game is in a few hours, right? Like 9 hours? Am I reading that right?
>>
>>44223059
Neat in presentation, but not in practice. Like >>44223171 said, the original point to the project was to look at Rapture through the eyes of the common folk there, who either splice up and get lost in the act until they're lunatics and freaks, or those who avoid it to keep their looks and minds intact, but put themselves at risk in the world around them to retain their humanity. Any way to undo Adam's damage in game would negate the point of that damage all together unfortunately.

Well, the idea was that is could fuck you up just as badly as taking in more adam, but with the caveat of losing power instead of gaining it
Think of it like an invasive, experimental procedure for an otherwise incurable disease, it could do more harm than good , but any chance is one worth taking
I imagine a splicer pc might try to "get clean" if the party planned on going topside and never coming back
>>
>>44228059
If any such thing would be introduced, it would require a better understanding of how Adam works mechanically for the game, so at least not until after playtesting the system as is.

That said, I still don't much care for the idea. Adam usage is meant to be a permanent investment character wise. Removing the effects of it even for trading back the power, just doesn't seem like something one should be capable of doing, even if it's just a chance to succeed with it. You take the needle knowing what you're doing to yourself, and that's the most terrible knowledge of it all. You chose to Splice, and now you are stuck with it no matter how much you moderate your usage. It's no longer and if, but a when. Might as well enjoy a moment of godhood before the madness takes hold...

Part of the reason I wanted it to be the metal itself was so that the natives could use it, they would do so by swallowing talismans or implanting it under their skin.

Was thinking that its industrial applications would be like a power source, instead of steam or oil the companies in the area use slivers of the metal to power their gadgets, which in turn can apply plasmid and tonic like abilities on the machines. Things that would jumpstart certain technologies and advance others by a hundred years, as well as make novelty items. Imagine having fridges, automobiles, and the like.

I like the idea of something being caused by the refining process though. I`ll have to go through the plasmids and tonics and pick out which could feel more manufactured and used by the industry, and which would be better as the simpler tribal stuff the native shamans and warriors use. There will be no changes to the plasmids themselves, just who has access to what.

>>44223028
Gonna rewatch this movie as well.

>pick out which could feel more manufactured and used by the industry, and which would be better as the simpler tribal stuff the native shamans and warriors use. There will be no changes to the plasmids themselves, just who has access to what.

I think that's a solid middle ground. Maybe the more elemental 'natural' ones are accessible by the native, and the more more tech based ones are for the evil white oppressors.

Alright so here`s a basic starter list just to get the feel for things.

Industrialists(and the like)
Shock Jokey
Devil`s Kiss
Iron Sides
Telekinesis
Brain Boost
Hacker`s delight
Medical expert
Armored Shell
Eve saver
Hacking expert
Arms race
Instant Prodigy
Shut down expert
Natives
Keen observer
Old Man Winter
Aero Dash
Charge
Possession
Insect Swarm
Murder of Crows
Decoy
Hypnotize
Geyser
Bucking Bronco
Extra nutrition
Lurker
Organic pockets
Elemental roulette
Head Hunter
Melee expert
Natural Camouflage
Scrounger
Resurrection

Unaffiliated (either everyone uses or I can`t decide where to put them)
Winter Blast
Incinerate
Teleport
Undertow
Cyclone
Bulk up
Magnetism
Sports Boost
Strong Arm
Slugger
Booze Hound

Industrialists would have exclusive access to gears as they are manufactured using the refined metal.

Also I had a great idea for this setting`s parallel to Spider Splicers:

Some people try to take powers the wrong way, eating it right out of the flesh of their victims. This leads to horrific and unforeseen mutations and often drives the practitioners mad far quicker than over splicing. The natives refer to such individuals as Wendigo.
>>
>>44235269
>Some people try to take powers the wrong way, eating it right out of the flesh of their victims
I was going to suggest something similar. Nice one.

I think your next step is to flesh out the 'Andrew Ryan' of your setting.
>>
>>44235494
That`s my current focus, but I haven`t gotten far at all. Gonna start my movie marathons in a little bit to get into it.

So far it is Might Makes Right at the most basic level.

A man earns what he takes. If he can not take what he wants, what he needs, he does not deserve it, but is a better man than most for trying.

A man keeps what he protects. If he cannot protect it, then he stops deserving it, no matter how he got it.

There will be more fine tuning to it as I figure out how to incorporate honour, courage, cunning, and the blood and sweat of a man`s brow into the philosophy.
>>
>>44236511
>honour, courage, cunning, and the blood and sweat of a man`s brow

I'd like to see this guy against any sort of cunning at all, he is above board, Lawful Evil, if you will. He is taking what he wants, but he does so only after the landowners refuse to sell, the girl refuses to have sex with him freely and his enemies have refused to surrender. Then he warns them the storm is coming before he kills, rapes and steals. His enemies have every opportunity and every warning. No ambushes, no sneak attacks, he is pure Might made Right because he is strong enough to take what he wants. He'll even tell you the time and date he's coming because no fucks are given.

Honour? Keeps to his word, in a Dr Doom like fashion, even if it hobbles his own interests.

Courage? He isn't afraid of any enemy, any situation. He takes risks and always delivers

Cunning? For weaker beings who aren't able to take what they want. He'll have none of it.

Blood and sweat? Yeah, you were strong or clever enough to work for/build/make it, now sell it top me or I'll just take it. Your choice.
>>
>>44237354
A completely honest villain sounds great. What's more I think he shouldn't see himself as a villain, or judge others that way at all. No heroes, no villains. To be bad isn't to harm others, it's to not be honest with himself and others. His hopes, his dreams, and the methods he uses to get them are all played out with his cards on the table for all to see. His objective isn't to bluff his opponent into thinking he's better than he is but to make them crumble because he is just plain better.

>Keeps to his word, in a Dr Doom like fashion, even if it hobbles his own interests.

A man does what he says he'll do, if not then he shouldn't be talking.

>He isn't afraid of any enemy, any situation. He takes risks and always delivers.

No middling. If you're gonna do something do it, let everyone see you do it and let them know exactly how things are done.

>For weaker beings who aren't able to take what they want. He'll have none of it.

While despising cheats and sneak thieves, I think he should appreciate people who aren't idiots and can get things without being too costly. Sure he praises the brawny prize fighter he has raking in the bets, but he still uses the big palooka like a beast of burden who will be disposed of when he is useless. Same with those intellectual types. They can be used, either for gabbing with bureaucrats or getting in the way of lawmen what need distracting. If they can't pay what's owed then they feed the pigs all the same.

A sneak who cheats and a thief who slinks off into the night will not be tolerated.

>Yeah, you were strong or clever enough to work for/build/make it, now sell it top me or I'll just take it. Your choice.

You work the fields, the forge or the bars, I work my knuckles and knives. We're all tradesmen, of a sort.

Also I like that you mention Doctor Doom. Some of his stuff will be great for fleshing out this character.

As a side note I've thought up an NPC.
Here is the rough draft for him

Theodore Marshal is a second generation land owner and runs the largest farm in the area. His grandfather was a bandit who took the largest fresh water source for his own and sold it at high prices. His father built it into a large plantation and bullied away most everyone else delivering food and water into the area. Being one of the wealthiest men in the area when "Heaven's Gold" was found he naturally procured dome of the earliest plasmids and tonics, but went mad died from them. Theodore was always a wishy-washy son, more of a dreamer with his nose in the books, and he hated how callous his father was. When he inherited the estate he thought to turn his fortune to more humanitarian efforts. Cheaper food, bringing in doctors, starting a school an a library. His workers are being payed fairer wages and discipline has been lax. Theft is becoming a common occurrence, especially with the gangs, bandits and other businesses stepping up their games.

Over the years his efforts have sapped his fortune and soured his business partners.

While in the public eye he is lauded and well liked by the common people, behind the closed doors of the wealthy and influential he is a laughing stock who is coming close to losing everything.

Depending on how the PCs interact with him he will either buckle down and go for broke, hoping the goodwill of others pays off, or throw a tantrum and blame his losses on "barbaric thugs without morals", and cause great harm to the community.

Like I said, a rough draft. Going to need to research things to make him work better.
>>
>>44240194
This sounds really good, is this the Andrew Ryan/Commstock of the piece or another potential employer?
>>
>>44240002
Sounds like you're on point senpai. I look forward to reading more.
>>
>>44240542
Another potential employer meant to flesh out the setting and be a contrast to the Ryan-a-like. He's meant to be like a less cool Atlas in that he seems good and is certainly helpful, he may very well be a conniving, petty bastard due to his frustration.

>>44240902
Thanks! I'll try to get more done tonight but if not there will definitely be more tomorrow.
>>
>>44241070
Gonna double post as a thought occurs.

He could very well be the Ryan/Commstock of the setting. Instead of breaking and becoming a sniveling snake he mans the fuck up, seizes a large cash of Heaven's Gold for himself through sheer grit as a big 'fuck you' to those backroom dealers bleeding his fortune dry. The fact that things start going better the more he forces them to becomes the foundation of his might makes right beliefs.

Along with some supplies, workers, doctors, and a little ingenuity and vicious business and he elbows his way into the market, forcing all but the biggest, most wealthy or ruthless competitors to be assimilated into his own company.

Oh. the public works are still there, but they're rapidly becoming taunts, showing that he can waste money on these things and anyone who tries to take advantage of such good-natured things is getting a broken jaw at best, getting dragged out into the street and clubbed to death in full view of everyone else at worst.

I'm liking this idea more and more.
>>
>>44241326
It works, but I think you'd be diluting the Dr Doom guy you were originally building. This amalgam of the two might be more believable, but I think you're losing the bombasticity of DOOM, and Ryan was nothing if not bombastic.
>>
>>44241326
>>44241930
On second reading I think this is the better option. Its got a redemptive quality, and it's hard to dislike someone who conquers through sheer guts and determination.
>>
>>44240194
>Theodore Marshal
Not loving the Theodore, too many syllables.
I'd rather some old timey, single syllable name, Bill, George, Jack, Gil,
I know you can shorten Theodore to Ted, but it still doesn't float my boat.
