Exactly as the title says. I'm looking for interesting ideas for aliens. They can be your own or ripped from other works of fiction.
>>
Didn't /tg/ make an alien a while back?
>>
A race that naturally has the power to travel from planet to planet they barely have any technology, and are more like passive, friendly observers to other races.

You could be working at a port on an ocean planet and just see one descend from the sky and right next to you, and nobody bats an eye because they don't really hurt anything.

Weird deep-sea bugs that are totally peaceful or allied to us because we don't compete for living space.

Anything radially symmetric.

Hedonists who transfer their brains into exciting new genetically engineered bodies

Predators and prey who developed intelligence as part of their 'evolutionary arms-race'
>>
>>44123436
Giant bugs with a psuedo-hivemind- every bug is an individual, but they are all in constant contact with each other, and memories are shared.
Think SOMA; each alien has essentially the same memories, and thus their personalities are very similar, but there's small differences in each individual that can branch out into more complex quirks. Also, they don't suffer an existential crisis about it because they've always been connected; "Of course that's me! I'm also setting up a shipment of grain two systems over, studying new lifeforms over there, making first contact with- GAAH! Ugh... they shot me. Why do they always shoot me?"
Thinking about how we're all completely separate from each other is as much of a mind trip for them as trying to imagine being in a hundred thousand places at once is for us.

AI that were developed by a race that went extinct, not to an uprising but because incredible amounts of pollution ended up killing them off, while only the machines remain. They continue to industrialize the planet with the goal being to make it mechanical to the core. It's become ideological for most of them, and even religious to some.

Fungal species that begins life attached as polyps on a very dense rock formations deep in their astroid belt home. They don't have much technology of their own but have formed cargo cults around the occasional wreck that comes their way and are just starting to gather information about the universe beyond their field of floating stones.

Because of the minerals they grow on, eventually they out-grow and form Around the mineral, breaking it down and redistributing the rocky mass through their body. This makes them a little bit slow, but Very dense when they do finally move.

They're usually sedentary unless provoked to motion outside of their pattern of migration around their particular asteroid to get some sun-light from their abnormal, violet-hued dwarf of a home star.

They can launch themselves with small bursts of motion, throwing their weight into the void. They are not careless about doing so, but have perfected this as an art of transit between some of the larger asteroids, facilitating cultural exchange among some of the other fungal formations.

The mineral formations include crystaline conductive latices; their intellect is mostly by chance rather than for predatory facilitation/diversion, and despite their slow lifestyle and presentation of themselves they are quite quick witted as living amalgams of metalic crystal structures and fungal biomass.

Somewhere in the asteroid field they're native to is an anomalous fungal formation that, prior to gaining enough biological development to start a proper consciousness, kept growing around its whole asteroid, forming a single, giant genius loci sized creature. It took millenia to come to life in earnest, but has lasted individually for many more life cycles than most polyps do naturally and is regarded as a wise spirit and ancestral guide.

Imagine a something like a cross between a birch and a crepe myrtle tree that thinks and has a space faring civilization. Individual Meistersingers are 4.5 to 6 meters tall. They are sessile creatures who root in one place and are unable to move. Nevertheless they are intelligent tool users who have built an interstellar civilization. They manipulate and perceive the world around them with their 'choir'. A choir consists of 7-10 specialised symbiotic organisms that act as the singers eyes, ears and hands. They are split between flyers and crawlers. Flyers are about the size of sparrows, can hover and have large and sensitive eyes and ears. Crawlers are about the size of a large cat, resemble a land crab and have two sets of manipulators resembling crab claws with retractable tendrils that can be used for fine work.

Baseline Meistersingers use two methods to control their choir. For short range, immediate work they use a complex aural code that covers a huge range of frequencies and can convey information equivalent to a visual image. This is also how the singers use their eyes to see even though they are not physically connected to the singer. The required sounds are generated by thousands of fine, stiff tendrils that cover the branches of the singer in place of leaves. For long range work that requires a choirmember to travel out of aural range the Meistersinger uses a chemical version of its aural code to 'program' the unit for its job. Programming is accomplished by having the unit consume a specialized sap that is exuded by the singer through specialized organs in its branches. The detached unit can also report back to the singer chemically by 'downloading' its memory through its own secretions which are consumed by other specialized organs in the singers branches. Modern singers also use electromagnetic and photonic communications implants to augment their abilities.

In canon answer, for whatever reason their immediate ancestors' limbs fused together. The monkeys have bifrucated arms but not fully two limbs or four, so I guess they're supposed to be the missing link. I guess it's like how apes lost tails.

Out of canon answer, it's because Cameron wanted to mocap the aliens so they had to be humanoid.

As an aside, I like that the xenomorph in OP has four arms. It's also one of the better interpretations of alternative host xenomorphs out there. Very close to a generic xenomorph, but with a few things carried over from the host species. The bright colour is a really interesting touch.

It's a Xenomorph bred with a Pandoran fish, it came from a quest that ran back in 2013, a young predator is sent on Pandora on his 1st hunt, he discover that, while the local fauna is deadly, the underwater species are way more deadlier...his greatest fear was a xenomorph bred from such fish.
>during his encounter with the fishes he got bit by one and his blood got diluted in the water, the Hive Mind on Pandora then made a Predator fish, that can use the plasma caster

The Oankali can be an interesting race to use. They can perceive things to the molecular/genetic level and their Ooloi sex are essentially genetic engineers with genetically engineered technology. They need to hybridize themselves with other species after a number of generations or suffer some sort of genetic doomsday. It essentially means that there can be several different Oankali "races" flying around the galaxy.

Another interesting alien is the Jotoki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jotoki

The start life as singular tadpole-like arm creatures creatures layed/hatched in ponds and 5 of them merge into a "starfish like configuration" as an adolescent to start life as an arborial air breather. The adolescent will imprint on whatever it thinks is sapient/sentient(even animals). Before they became a slave race an adult jotok would go into the forest and choose an adolescent and train it into adulthood. They are learning geniuses in adolescent development and pre-slave technology included starships and were primarily traders.

>>44123436
I always thought it would be cool to have an alien that's really a hive mind of a few dozen or hundred bodies. The alien doesn't really feel pain and is basically completely self sustaining, basically being a small village unto itself. As a result it's a collasal asshole since, unlike the average human, it's never had to work with others or compromise. There could be a cool element where the entire species essentially lives forever (the same cells technical live forever due to being cloned through mitosis) and because of there selfishness fundementaly to not understand the concept of self sacrifice or courage. Also its continent from a company setting since you can kill dozens of it hundreds of of times in a fight and not just fight it once.

It's the most accurate in film. That doesn't make it accurate to reality. The lasers on mercury would have to be impossibly powerful and impossibly precise, the cost of making enough anti-matter would bankrupt the world a hundred times over, etc etc.

It is bullshit, but it did try, mostly due to it being a much older design called Valkyrie by charles pellegrino whom cameron happened to know because pellegrino is also the number 1 expert on the titanic.

Nothing can last forever. Like the author says, it doesn't matter how long we last as long as the existence we have is worth living.

Uh, the final page makes it rather clear that he's not a descendant, and that no descendants can be found.

>I must conclude my words with a confession. Mankind, the very species which I’ve been chronicling from its terrestrial infancy to its domination of the galaxies, is extinct.

>All of the beings which you saw on the preceding pages; from the lowly Worm to the Wind-riding Sail People, from the megalomaniac Gravital to the ultimate Galactic citizens, lie a billion years dead. We are only beginning to piece the story together. What you read was our best approximation of the truth.

>Why did they disappear? Perhaps it was a final, unimaginable war of annihilation, one that transcended the very meaning of “conflict”. Perhaps it was a gradual break-up of the united galaxies, and every race facing their private end slowly afterwards. Or perhaps, the wildest theories suggest, it was a mass migration to another plane of existence. A journey into somewhere, sometime, something else. But the bottom line is; we honestly don’t know.

>dat design optimized for minimal weight. every gram counts, nigga
>most of the crew is frozen to save money, mass, and boredom
>most of the mass is just a fuckoff huge engine.
>none of that FTL magic shit, like back in the ol' days when we traveled relativistic and it was uphill both ways
