'Cause I would like to do it 'right', here's the thing. I like anthropomorphic characters, Redwall, Armello, stuff like that I'm just in love with. But I can't stand furries. But for the longest time I hung out WITH furries because they were the ones who produced the content that I wanted to see. But now I'm just fed up with them and their special brand of bullshit, and now just want my anthro-characters without any attached drama or fetishistic nonsense.

Avoid sexual situations or innuendo beyond what is normal for your group. Don't overplay your characters animal side. Human players don't go into detail about how their ape like hands can grasp banana like handles and how their primate brain is specially adapted for social situations. Its just another part of your character that it is a beast man. Dont make it THE WHOLE character.

That's pretty much it. If there's funny or interesting accommodations for your character, sure yeah that's cool and neat as long as you don't overdo it or do it too often. If it's just a mary-sue human with recolored skin (how often do you see a furry actually drawn with fur? Lazy untalented fucks) that goes out of it's way to make everyone uncomfortable with overt sexuality, then fuck you.

Have character's character other than simply "rabbit man" and you're good to go.

I'd say that races already prominently featured in most fantasy settings as well as a select few beastmen races can keep the setting non-furry. Picture the khajit in the Elder Scrolls. They are not just humans with cat heads. Definitely give your races fully fleshed out races and try to completely differentiate them from humans. If you want, even instruct the players playing beastmen to roleplay differently than how they would any other race. Limit their stats. Maybe NPCs discriminate against beastmen. Maybe they cannot speak as well as other races, and must have another player assist them in communication with NPCs.

My settings usually include:
Rarely Minotaurs or Bison people, strictly hostile NPC.
nuanced Khajit clones. PC and NPC.
Possibly a regular stereotype races features, and replace that race with beastmen. Example: Horned Kobolds take the place of Drow, living in the Underdark, preying on Dwarves who get lost in cave systems or dig too deep.
Another option is to include setting related beastmen. Does your setting take place in not!Asia? Include Monkey men who serve as hermit like monks high in the mountains.

Just crack open a GURPS book and roll for a government. Something like Bedouin Space Dolphins or Caliphate Cats makes the furryness go down smoother.

I think the game goes furry when you yiff each other.

I have played lizardfolk, catfolk, ratfolk and several other beast races in games and it never seems to be an issue (unless one of the other players is a furry that keeps trying to hump my character every other turn).

Like >>44053745 said, it's important to show your beast traits but don't make every single comment about how your bunny is craving a carrot or how you hop instead of walking. Having large ears may make you the go to person for eavesdropping or listening for strange noises.
