Has anyone ever had a situation where quick summaries of backstories just havent worked?
Only once for me, when i quickly summed up the character premise the moderators shot it down instantly because they thought it broke the "lore" of the setting, it actually made far more sense than most other characters I'd been told are being brought in.
After seeing them jump the gun so quickly I took a pass on joining because it became increasingly clear how much of a railroad circlejerk their 'open' group was.
One of the biggest reasons I tend to avoid larger groups to play with.

Character came from a tribe that didn't know of any difference between wizards, clerics and sorcerers. To the tribe they're all just foreign words for the same thing.


Some of the elders a couple of decades ago before the start of my character's adventure saw a guy in the tribe of similar physical features catch a specific type of fish and years later showed use of magical powers.

Since my character looked similar and also caught the same fish the elders assumed he'd be able to become a wizard and thus help the tribe far more than a fisherman could.

So they sent my character off with some seemingly-valuable stuff to a city of atheists this tribe knew little of but knew of it's reputation for training magic-users.
After years spent in and around the city trying to get more money to get one of the academies to accept him, my character finally got into the academy.
After months of making very little progress in becoming a wizard a person who happened to be at the academy informed my character of the clerics and the religious organizations they're associated with.

A young, inexperienced vampire nerd who is a naturally gifted sharpshooter decides to live out his fantasies (in other words he's a cringy katana-and-fedora neckbeard who happens to actually be pretty good at what he does) and becomes a bounty hunter. His services are comparably pretty cheap, the catch is that in return the customer gives him some of their blood as well as the money. The cringe factor is meant to be tongue-and-cheek ironic humor, he's not actually meant to be an edgelord.

Well, he was born to carnies in Germany. Specifically, to a family of clowns. So of course he went into clowning, and came to love it. Unfortunately, he also went into coke, and wound up being fired for punching out an elephant (being a rather strong, clever fellow) in a mid-act coke rage... just in time to get drafted into the German Airforce. He ended up serving well, even made it to an officer position AND got send over as a liaison to the US military!

Then the Apocalypse occurred, for this was a Mad Max style game.

For a time he descended into vicious road banditry, until he was defeated and conscripted into the Road Warriors, a band of post-apoc lawmakers as a caravan guard. Eventually his caravan was wiped out in a raid, and he took to barbarism in the wastes for several years, until he encountered a Road Warrior patrol and joined back up as a survivor and full Road Warrior. Eventually the Road Warriors fell apart however, and so he returned to his roots as a vicious and insane but oddly just warlord.

Now he roams the wastes in his fleet of rammercars with his Berzerker Deadheads, telling jokes, doing coke, and killing scum.

I have this idea for an adept background though. Worked at a big fucking library getting pushed around and hating her job, one day an inquisitor comes around and she gets assigned to carry his books/coffee while he's there, ordered to carry it on to his ship too. Inquisitor takes off in his ship and forgets to return his coffee mule, can't really be assed to turn back with her.
