The Huntingdon District Wargaming Society is probably one of the better wargaming clubs in the country though.

A few years back they put on a 35mm (I think? It was a few years back) full scale Market Garden game for Salute.
I remember playing out their test game in the club a few weeks prior, and choking up one of the bridges with the corpses of my tanks.

Well, you'r enot going to activate the Beast if you don't have another player next to him, and I'd say tentacles is stronger than tail for tying players up. It's a bit of a tie though, and the Krox is generally more reliable, so I wouldn't say that the Beast is straight up better.

DE teams are more likely to hit the other team, so their linemen are more valuable than HE linemen despite being identical.

Like a 3 4 6 8 player in DE is better than a 3 4 6 8 player in HE because the DE will at some point get into a bash war with some teams (WE, Skaven, Halflings, Norse maybe)

Since DE will sometimes get into bash wars, they'll lose some players here and there, having a quality lineman is good here because the 3 4 6 8 means they're fairly resilient, no strength penalty, average move-speed, and of course, elf agility means you can handle the ball with them.

TL;DR sometimes DE will bash the other team and lose players so the quality linemen perform better, where HE will never get into bash wars so they don't really make use of the high quality chaff players since their all stars do the heavy lifting

Yes, in bb2, open league NAF, chaos IS overpowered, because in a perpetual league, with no point, no ending, no playoffs, just endless games, chaos is the best race

Dwarves are good too, but chaos is king, because clawpomb

You'll get a team leveled up, get your star players clawpombed and then you'll end up with a much lower TV than you started with because your guys died.

There's no real solution to it because perpetual leagues are pointless in a way, winning and losing doesn't matter, it's just a time sink, there's nothing gained and nothing lost.

Hey! LRB 5.0 edition here, I'm going to play in a one-month league with the following teams against me : Dark Elves and Lizardmen played by two veteran players, Dwarves, Humans and Nuurgle played by newbie players. I'm a huge noob myself but we play unfriendly games until the 10th of January, when the league really begins.

Two teams are making me drool : on the one hand, Chaos. I'm thinking about 4 Chaos Warriors, 7 Beastmen and 3 Rerolls, which would leave me no fans, cheerleaders or apothecary, but a really good starting roster. I've read that it has a great potential for improvement, but I don't know if a one-month league is enough, considering a coach is allowed to challenge one other coach each week, which means between four and eight games only. I'd play conservatively with the main intention on destroying the other teams to prevent them from XPing much and force forfeit while still going for touchdowns if possible (like against dwarves).

On the other hand, I like Skavens. They got the Gutter Runner and are pretty much speedsters. I wouldn't take a big guy either, and really focus on making my linemen and blitzers as resilient as possible, while playing on the high AG of GR and Throwers. The idea here would be to score as fast and as much as possible, and buying new players between every game.

So, two very different approaches, both sound interesting and fun to me, now considering the setup and all, what would YOU do?

No, they're good, they're the most durable elf team and you get a good deal of skills and agi 4

There are starting variations which pick up one of those, but it ends up costing you a reroll and assassin and witch are both AV7, assassin has pretty much no skills, witch had dodge, jump up and frenzy.

And honestly, starting out, frenzy is a liability.

After you understand tackle zones, and how to frenzy safely then the witches become amazing, but they're hard to use, and easy to get injured/hurt/killed

In short, they're good positionals, they're amazing pieces, but in the hands of a new player they're more likely a liability which will frustrate you, cost you money and spp, and possibly make you quit bloodbowl.

Safe starts aren't bad anon, they're safe.

The first time I started I took two blitzers, two runners, an assassin and a witch elf. It was awful. I stuck the league out, and ended up with an ok team, but it was a grind.

The next season I started a team with 4 blitzers, 6 linemen and a runner. It was like night and day, much easier.

The same strategies that work on most elf teams work well on Dark Elves, possibly more so. Key is positioning players so that if an elf needs to dodge out, he has to dodge out into a tackle zone, and using TZs to funnel elf movement in particular directions. This is more punishing for DE, because their linemen are only MA6 and can't reposition as easily.

It depends. Dark Elves are a strong choice out of the gate but they rely a lot more on lateral thinking, much like humans - you have to know when it's better to bash or dodge, and creative use of Frenzy chainpushes goes a long way.

Seeing these patterns are things that new players are not good at, but I suppose DE really teaches you this in a hurry, much like humans (albeit a little more forgiving at AG4). The other big mistake that new players tend to make is overcommitting to a big scrum. While DE are AV8 they're still only strength 3 and their players are very, very expensive, which can often leave you behind on players and often unable to afford replacements (because you get into a death spiral of constant loss due to not enough positionals, then not making enough money to replace them, etc.). That's partly why lots of coaches recommend Orcs or Humans instead - they can afford the inevitable losses.

not that guy, but I'm trying to play a DE team in bb2, and the matchmaking system has me kind of confused. tell me about it I just got back from a "starter league" game on fumbol where the guy had 1400tv agaisnts my fresh team.
The guy was super nice, but I couldn't make any headway because every one of this catchers and their dog had blodge. Still happy I was able to make one touchdown from a lucky thrown and none of my players were injuried, which almost always happens on the first game. I even got enough for an apoth.

There is no matchmaking system worth noting.

The game will match you up against anyone if it can't find someone in your TV range in the first few seconds.

Min/maxing your TV doesn't have quite as much importance as it does in a different environment because odds are, you're going to be choking on inducements with most of the opponents you get matched against.

Smart use of inducements can go a long way if you're up against a Blodge heavy team. One of the big weakness of elf teams though is the lack of access to chainsaws - these are generally your go-to inducement against Blodge or high ST players, but elf teams need to make do without.

Aside from the wizard, taking a mercenary with tackle or Eldril can help (Hypno gaze is basically a free blitz).

The game is designed around a league format, not a perpetually open game mode.

Certain teams are very strong early (Amazon) while others are better with more development. Other teams are very strong but suffer badly when attrition happens (Lizardmen), whereas other teams deal well with injuries or don't have them happen (elves and Undead, for example).

Honestly I really can't recommend BB2 - you couldn't pay me to get it. Sure, it looks nice, but you're getting an incomplete game - there's only 8 out of 20+ rosters, they don't even have chainsaw star players, they lack the ability to buy skilled mercenaries, certain skills that should be optional for tactical reasons are not, and the "balance changes" are not an encouraging sign that Cyanide actually understands the game.

A timeless match up.

Especially at low TV it's really something special.

Skaven just try to play the elf game, on offense try to throw one or two blocks to open a hole and vomit gutters through it, you don't want to run it against delves.

On defense you have two options, try and force him to cage up and try and slow him down to deny the td, or ignore his receivers a little bit and try to force a quick pass and a quick td, then try and get a td in return.

If they've got any of the av7 positionals feel free to bash those. Ohterwise avoid the blitzers, try to throw stormvermin blocks onto line elves, score tds, get spps

If he's in an environment with wrestling ball strippers, Sure Hands is still a good investment. Hell if you want to get crazy, an AG+ blitzer can be used as a receiving threat instead of giving it Sure Hands. Almost no one expects Orcs to pass, but you can't ignore an AG4 piece in your backfield.

CAS on his Ogre second turn, and it just went downhill from there for him. He did get a 2 turn TD to equalise at the start of the second half, but that just gave me the ball for 6 more turns.

The Black Orc with the 2 CAS just got +ST too. I think these guys might be getting put in the next [R]anked tournament, they are pretty beastly. Only had four injuries/deaths so far, all to throwaway linemen.

To start the Bretonians have the most valuable linemen. At 40K they give you a legit 6 move 3 strength piece with fend. Want an extra dude on the bench? It will only cost you 2 skills. It isn't even enough for babes. Wrestle-fend, Dirty players, and kickers are also only 60K a piece.

The triple skill set of Claw Might Blow and Piling On. Most common on Chaos teams that just want to kill eveything.

Claw piling on and mighty blow. Claw makes all armor break on a 7 or 8 I don't remember which. But it is used to negate high armor like dorfs, lizard men, or orcs. Mighty blow gives you a +1 on either the armor break roll or the injury roll and piling on let's you reroll armor break or injury rolls at the expense of putting your player prone.

Basically anyone who has access to strength takes mighty blow and has at least one piling on piece. Typically I try to either have my thrower stand in my half and Chuck it up field or I cage up my thrower and have blitzers and I guess the catcher leak out so I have outlet routes. So he will be serving as a receiver but rarely will he take a hit while holding the ball. Most likely he will be a quick strike option.

the IRC bot lives folks

Right now he announces when /tg/ league tournament matches start and gives a link to spectate, furthermore, if you want your IRC client to blink or something without actively filtering the bot, I've added the option to make him PM you when matches start with the link, to do so send him a PM saying "desu sign me up". If at any point you don't want to be sent a PM anymore, PM him saying "desu fuck you" and you'll be removed from the list of people to PM.

There are 2 problems though, number 1 is that I don't have a dedicated server nor am I able to leave the computer on 24/7 so I can't have the bot up all day, it should be up for most of the day though. The other problem is the code is pretty messy but it should work within these very basic premises and I'll continue to improve it

Not really - they're more for if you want to do a traditional style boardgame or miniatures game where everything goes back in the box afterward - it's no different from say, playing a 40k game with a set list.

They also test coach skill on a more purely tactical level, since you don't have to worry about casualties and preserving players for future rounds (just for the duration of the game). Sure, teams that normally lack endurance like elves benefit, but so do bash teams which are often comparatively lower on SPP, so it all evens out.

On the pitch, keep in mind that -2d against with block is actually fairly safe if all you need is a push.

On defence, plan around pushing the Saurii out of the way to take shots at skinks. Marking lizardmen is fairly important, and you want to position your players so that skinks need to keep on making dodge rolls. They ignore overlapping tackle zones, but repeated dodges are still risky at AG3, even if they do have a dodge reroll.

Screening is generally not very helpful - Lizardmen are fast and strong enough to punch a hole in the screen and then rush through.

Lizardmen are definitely one of the teams that suffers in terms of long-term attrition. A leveled Saurus is very difficult to replace, and Skinks often do not survive long enough to get a lot of useful skills.

There was one time I managed to knock all the other guys skinks out of the game. It was awesome I was humans and my thrower knocked 2 skinks out including me rolling a both down defender stumble, choosing the both down even though I had no block on my thrower. He gets killed, apo him so he comes back as no casualty and when he comes back into the game he kills another fucking skink.

and that is how my thrower got his first level up.
