I saved a fuck ton of gladiator helmets, it's not art, but what the hell.

Since we're on the topic, how do gladiator games fit into your setting /tg/?

Gladiator helmets look like they offer pretty high quality protection. Womder why the roman army never picked them up...

They were probably more expensive than the rank-and-file legionary equipment. The reason gladiators got them was probably because they're stylish as fuck and to reduce accidental deaths.

Rank and file didn't need or want that level of protection. More protection means more weight. Also, the mask/visor reduces visibility and makes it harder to breath. A legionay had to lug 40-50 kg of shit with him everywhere and was liable to be in combat for hours. A gladiator was rested before a fight, which was not going to last more than 15 min.

For rank and file you really just wanna cover the essentials (forehead, neck, scalp), while sparing out ears (so your doods can actually hear commands/signals), eyes (to preserve a decent field of vision) while retaining as much ventilation as possible (so your doods don't pass out five minutes into the battle.

A big part of gladiator gear was being stylish or to inflict an actual handicap on the wearer. They were also presumably based on highly stylized versions of helmets used by various tribes the Romans conquered.

It's also worth noting that gladiator armor armor was intended to heighten the drama of the fight. The protection to specific parts discourages a totally reckless style of fighting, but it also gives enough protection that fighters need not be conservative in fighting either. It also prevents the fight from ending to quickly (as by single blow to the face).
Essentially, the armor should encourage an interesting fight.

So, why is most gladiator armor on the arm holding the weapon? Is it just for style? I feel like it would be more effective on the offhand, but maybe it's just there to keep the arm thats actually swinging the sharp metal working as long as possible, since giving a gladiator protection on one arm and something like a shield seems to defeat the purpose of maximum bloodshed.

Striking at the armed hand is a common tactic that is commonly taught to disable and kill an opponent. Add in the fact that many gladiators of that style often carried a shield in their other hand anyways, then armoring that arm became quite relevant and important.

Large, heavy, overly stylized, and expensive to make are all qualities that make gladiator armour awesome, but would be a total pain in the ass for mass produced equipment for soldiers.
