PHR Super happy fun time hour

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hawkwargames/dropfleet-commander

9 days left in the campaign

Dropfleet Commander is a space wargame set in orbital environments developed by Hawk Wargames, who are also the developers of the tactical wargame, Dropzone Commander. Dropfleet Commander is a 1:15000 scale game, with models ranging from 70 to 200 mm; see videos below for an example of play.

So, what do you guys think of the "official" PHR color scheme? I like it, and think it's solid, but it definitely needs a little bit of -oomph- to stand out. Any ideas?

I'd personally go for darker blacks and a heavy gloss varnish on the bone sections. I'd also probably not paint a lot of the gun details as weird as it sounds, a band of black would be a lot more striking.

Alternatively any bold primary colour gloss varnished where the bone is would look good.

I have not previously been interested in this, but that ship has given me a raging erection

Fuck that's some pretty pretty shit.

I will have this.

Is their battlecruiser supposed to be revealed tomorrow?
>>
>>43809370

I think everyones Battlecruiser is. Although probably not as a model, more likely we'll just be getting renders.

Still no word on when we'll see the PHR Frigates though.
>>
What are peoples feelings on battlefleet gothic? GW recently revealed they were going to bring it back, and it was one of their most fun games of all time. I ask because I would rather play that with its fluff and ork fun ships rather than this, but in the end ill play whichever ACTUALLY has a playerbase.
>>
>>43809660
They're not bringing BFG back, they're rebooting it.

As in, the devs who made AoS are going to make the new BFG.

Battlefleet Sigmar.

>>
>>43809722

They could very well be bringing BFG back. You have no idea what the plan it.
>>
>>43809660
>>43809722

This!

Rumor mill was saying it will be made by some new FW team. However, we basically know zero about it. It could be a revival or a completely new game or even just a board game. It could be dreadfleet 2. It could be abandoned after one release.

There is nothing concrete about the BFG release that may occur. DFC looks pretty popular so far. However, that is a legit concern many have. DZC is still pretty small US. However, this release could help grow it. It is a great game with solid fluff. And DFC looks pretty great as well.
>>
14 minis for 110 Great British Bongs.

Are these guys serious?
>>
>>43809660
The best thing about BFG were the minis. The ruleset is possibly one of their worst, especially considering it's a specialist game.
>>
>>43810178

For 110 you get two starter sets with 14 minis each plus two rulebooks, gaming accessories etc etc.

Also at level you get a lot of extras.
>>
>>43810246
Oh ok, I must have misread.

Although, those 'alien' ships looks pretty garbage. The bigger ones are good, but the two smaller designs, which are basically identical are pretty bad.
>>
>>43810076
Except that the guy who made BFG is making THIS game, and all GW has are the Sigmar guys.
>>
>>43810178
Which bundle are you looking at?

The £110 one includes two 2 player starter sets.
>>
>>43810276
Oh the Scourge ones? Yeah I'm not so keen either. Guess I'll see how they look irl.
>>
>>43810325

Scourge could easily be one of those races where the models don't initially grab me, but they turn out to be a lot of fun to play.
>>
>>43810431
>>43810325
Oh, I was under the impression there were only 2 main races, with the orange race an add on.

How many are there?

Also, whilst the gaming mats taking from a low orbit perspective are pretty cool, its actually going to make it look you're flying ships on the scale of modern jet fighters and bombers.

They really needed to add in curvature of the planet somehow.
>>
>>43810509
>How many are there?
Four.

The grey guys are the UCM
The tentacle guys are the Scourge
The white guys are the PHR
The orange guys are the Shaltari

As for the battlemats, they're supposed to represent an area about the size of Spain, still too small for curvature.
>>
>>43809660
Battlefleet Gothic is most likely coming back as a shitty dreadfleet-tier board game.
>>
>>43810509
Four in total with a fifth existing but having no space presence. The starter set is Scourge and UNC with the PHR and Shaltari being separate starter fleets.

I backed it at commodore level so I'm getting the starter set and two individual fleets, which I'll probably select as double PHR and take two PHR battlecruisers (plus a Shaltari to paint).
>>
>>43810584

>As for the battlemats, they're supposed to represent an area about the size of Spain, still too small for curvature.

How many would you need to represent a full planet you think? About 24?
>>
>>43810658
120 or so, for a 10x12 grid sans polar regions.
>>
>>43810677

>Grid

Well, if it's a globe wouldn't you want something like a 2-2-8-8-2-2 arrangement to represent a planet? With the 2-2 squares representing polar regions?
>>
>>43810701

Something like this for instance?
>>
>>43810701

As a Scourge player in DZC, I have to admit that I am sort of bummed that our DFC ships are the weakest design wise. I think I'd like the larger ships infinitely more if they had the kept sleek top part of the hull, without the weird, boxy part underneath it. It'd make them look more like some giant, living sea creature cruising through space.

That said, I will probably just bite the bullet, and convince myself it looks cool until I start to love it, like I did with the despoiler.

On a side note, I oddly find the colors for the PHR ships sort of off-putting. I really, really like how it looks on their ground units, but for some reason it's not doing anything for me on the space ships. Maybe it's just some unflattering angles at work with the current pics.

I still play the occasional game of BFG, and yeah, the fluff is the draw. I also like that's simple to figure out what kind of weapons a ship has and in which firing arc. It's (roughly) WYSIWYG.

It looks like there's some of that happening here, but it's not as obvious. Same designer though - that's promising. Too bad I can't get myself to feel interested in how these look.

If you need help getting people into BFG, point them to Chinese toy-selling websites. But also give Dropfleet Commander a try and report back.
>>
>>43816566
you can just pay the lieutenant level, and choose PHR when we get to the end of the kickstarter. That'll give you a PHR starter fleet.
>>
>>43816587
Never mind, now that someone posted a whole bunch of images I can see the different weapons types. Still not as obvious as in BFG, but good enough.

Choose one starter fleet of the four, which means choose:
UCM
Scourge
PHR (The ones you want)
Shaltari

>Commander
Get a starter set, which includes the starter fleets for the UCM and the Scourge.

>Captain
Get two starter sets.

>Commodore
Get a starter set, plus two additional starter fleets in any combination of the four, and four battlecruisers.

>>
>>43817423
The PHR cruisers come with 3 types of broadside, which can be slotted into the two broadside ports per side.

A 2x7 bank of light cannons.
A 1x5 bank of medium cannons
Or a 1x2 bank of heavy cannons.

The painted one is the Ajax, which is mounting two broadside banks of light cannons.
>>
>>43817423
PHR specializes in braodsides, from the sound of it. So they saunter up to an enemy craft, and unload from point blank range, where the enemy is hard-pressed to easily escape, and can't hope to maneuver to hit them with their long range but largely straight arc weapons.
>>
So how do the bolt-ons work? Do I select a pledge level and what ever amount I pledge over I can select what I want?

>>
>>43817515

Apparently, you pledge and at the end of the kickstarter you get the option to add as many bolt ons as you want.
>>
>>43817515
Say you want the Commodore level and the collectors edition battleship.

Set your pledge to 150 britdollars (+ shipping); check the box that says "battleship" when Hawk sends out the end-of-Kickstarter survey.

You'll also have a chance to change your pledge during the survey, and get more bolt-ons; you can't change the pledge level, though.
>>
>>43817533
>Loving the Scourge by the way, screw that guy who said they have ugly models they are awesome.

I, too, agree with this sentiment.
The Scourge ship design is far and away the most inventive and aesthetically-pleasing of all the factions.
It is a shame that our human ships are far too generic and structurally unsound.
Perhaps we could stand to learn from the fresh, inventive designs offered by the Scourges' clearly superior engineering.
All I know is that the other factions will crumble and wither before the terrible might of the Scourge ships.
You can take my word on this.
-John Patriot, human
>>

>>
So how much lore/story is there for this dropfleet/dropzone thing?
>>
>>43817483
As far as I know, PHR is a slow moving, powerful shooting faction. Do they have speed to really get to point blank range? Or they form an old-school style battle line?
>>
>>43818021
For DZC, the core rules have a little bit of lore for each faction, as well as the overall story. Pretty barebones overall.

The Reconquest expansion book has a lot more more (about half of the book), expanding on the initial attempt to begin retaking conquered planets with the intent of eventually recapturing Earth, as well as lore explanations of a new faction, and info on the various planets and systems that the fights are taking place on.

That said, the lore isn't anything terribly new or overly creative. It's just a nice, simple backdrop to tie the game together, give some reasons for the various inter-faction conflicts, and offer lore explanations for new units (i.e. Scourge gaining slower, more armored units due to beginning to switch to a defensive game against UCM's initial offensive push; PHR beginning to ramp up hostilities by bringing out their massive superheavy walkers and elite soldiers; etc.).
>>
>>43808448
>band of black would be a lot more striking.
You'd still want to dry bush them dark grey or something. Straight black with no details tends to look rather bad and often, unprofessional.
>>
>>43818021
I was going to post a mediafire link to the core rules, expansion rules, and some other assorted stuff for the game, but it seems that either the anon that hosted the files removed them, or mediafire axed it.

I'd reupload them, but my desktop I saved everything to is currently a broken piece of shit.

>Do they have speed to really get to point blank range?

The only faction that want to get to point black are the scourge since they cause -1 to armour rolls at 6" or less with some of their stuff.
Everything else sort of just tries to silent run about the map, setting up battlelines and troop-drops before the inevitable mass of weapons free orders and murderous death everywhere.

At this point I'm not sure how the PHR are going to play in practice, at first I was seeing similarities between them and the Imperial fleet in BFG, but now I'm not so sure.

I would not be surprised at all if one or two of these made an apperance in the rules proper come release (under proper names of course)

The Guns + Burnthrough Heavy Cruiser and Guns + Ortillery HC seem the most likely, given that the Hawk stand at Salute already HAD the former shown in the display case last year, and the latter would have symmetry with the Shaltari Guns + Orbital Artillery Heavy Cruiser.

But I wouldn't be suprised with a better armed Troop Transport either, or possibly a troop transport style Battlecruiser.
A sort of multirole Battlecruiser with Guns, Troops and Fighters like the Oberon was in BFG.
>>
Can someone answer my two questions about the KS, I've gotten some friends to go in with me on a Commodore pack to soften the financial blow a little:

- Why haven't the Battlecruisers been unveiled yet? 25th is nearly over in my part of the world.

- Do you get extra bases equal to the bonus sprues from stretch goals? It just occurred to me they are very specific in distinguishing between *sprues* and *fleets/packs*.

- Between the Starter fleet, bonus cruiser and frigate sprue for each faction, and a battlecruiser for each faction, there'll be a reasonable amount of versatility if we just go completely evenly into each faction as is possible with Commodore right? Like, each Sprue is 4 x Frigates / 2 x Cruisers right?
>>
>>43822160
>- Why haven't the Battlecruisers been unveiled yet? 25th is nearly over in my part of the world.
Hawk are britbongs, and they usually do stuff in the afternoon.

>- Do you get extra bases equal to the bonus sprues from stretch goals? It just occurred to me they are very specific in distinguishing between *sprues* and *fleets/packs*.
Yes, for every ship you get, you will get one stand, and one base.

>

Yes, as of now, with all the free bonuses, going into commodore evenly will net you.

8x frigates
4x cruisers
1x battlecruiser

per faction; and that will hit 12x frigates if we get to 500k britbux.

>>
>>43818062

They're slow but typically have the longest range guns in the game. No need for point blank
>>
>>43822386

Nah, it was more just to figure out what level of variations there were in the cruiser sprue.

As I said when I first posted them some of these designs are obviously bad. Like the Light cruisers which are nothing but the Ortillery or Troop deck.
A few of the Heavy Carrier designs could turn out to be Battlecruisers though.

Personally, I'd like to see the Frigate sprue and how everything fits together there.

I can math that for you. Assuming no top-mounted troop pod or bombardment guns, you get 4 light variants, 8 medium variants, and 16 heavy variants. Half of the medium and heavy cruisers would be carriers, and reduce that to 14 heavy variants if you don't want to count railguns on top laser on bottom and laser on top railguns on bottom as separate variants.

A troop carrier with burn-through laser strikes me as an especially terrible variant though. Both modules dictate maneuvering and they don't agree.
>>
>>43822787
The top piece is also different. Though it looks like the divide there is strike carrier vs everything else.
>>
>>43822849
>A troop carrier with burn-through laser strikes me as an especially terrible variant though.
Why? I could be useful for a "FUCK YOUUUU" attack, where the troop carrier bursts through a line (while shitting out lasers), drops its troops off, and is promptly destroyed.
>>
>>43822787
Is there something painted red in the fork of the prow? Possibly missiles like Taipei has tons of?
>>
>>43822914
That assumes the drop site is directly between you and a suitable target. With railguns, the target could be off to the side and you could still hit it.
>>
>>43822874
Yeah, it looks like the strike cruiser has less armor, but this is necessary for the life support for all the troops.

You know, I've been wondering that too. Will the mechanics allow the Jakarta to add its PD roll to nearby ships via some special rule? I don't think PD can be be used to "hunt" fighters, since PD isn't a weapon.

Not going to lie, I like it.

Scourge will likely be more TENTACLES, like a cross between the Liir from SotS, and the Aquan from FA.

Shaltari will just be more hula hoops (likely interlocking, just to fuck with us) and some super-dildo.

We already know what the UCM battleship looks like.

>>43825032
Hivers built for ballistics are really vulnerable to deflector shielded fleets, and, if they were unlucky with their tech rolls, missiles and torpedoes as well. Only problem is they take way too long to take down, even with AM cannons and meson beams
>>
>>43825391
By the way, what is the most powerful "pure combat ship-of-the-line" load out there is? Pulsed phasors / PD phasors, AM cannons, and pulsed graviton beams?
>>
>>43825551
Honestly it depends on what race you play as, but a general rule of thumb is PD phasors and AM cannons, but energy is a major concern.

Hivers are great as a traditional 'ship of the line', in that they have great armor and plenty of turrets.
Humans are moreso all-round capability, their dreads are fairly good as well, with great firing arcs and a number of superheavy turret in the forward arc.
Liir are more of a carrier force than anything. Their dreads are pretty serviceable but their hull is paper thin, even with the best armor. One aspect that most people overlook on them is that they have stupidly powerful battleriders, which include cruiser and dreadnought sized ones with guns strapped to every surface available. Extremely powerful, but they have serious power and supply problems.
Morrigi are meant more for skirmishing with missiles and lasers, but have some respectable power in their forward arc, especially on the dreadnought.
Haven't played enough Zuul, Tarka or Loa to give you any advice on them, unfortunately.
>>
>>43808219

Not hugely interested in the game but the PHR ship is sexy. Kind of upset about the broadsides, though. You'd think a posthuman AI republic or whatever would think turrets the better choice. I hope their playstyle in space is a little different from how they operate on the ground.
>>
>>43825738

A lot of the ships we are seeing are made that way because they are coming from the same sprue. You can make all the ships from the same base hull and add or subtract things as you see fit. Then you can also add other components to make a different ship type all together. Some will of course be similar to others but to use a star trek reference, the difference between a Miranda Class and Reliant. Fundamentally the same ship with just a slightly different purpose. In the other cases the jump will be from Constitution to Excelsior. Still very similar but varied enough to be different.

The models are pretty big and if you watch the video it is pretty easy to see the variation between the models.

I was not expecting this game to get art like this...
>>
´>>43837037
That's a pretty nice mix.

>>43834813
I don't really think that's a big a barrier as you think it is, unless your local economy's completely in the toilet. You do need training, decent hygiene and some social skills, and you might end up looking for a job for a while (took me a year to land me my first job, then nearly a year when I switched careers from teacher to IT technician), but go for something you find interesting enough that you think you could work with and not get bored/depressed. If you have any skills already, you could always see if parents/friends have any position.

God speed anon.
>>
What % discount do you guys figure the KS is from retail?
>>
Wait, so are all the battlecruisers KS exclusive?
>>
>>43839090

I have no clue, but I think if you start small it is at least something like 10% off. A standard DZC plastic starter is 35 and rule book is 15. Going by those numbers that makes sense. I recall reading that there is a decent discount at low levels so it may or not be more. These models are bigger and come with fancy bases.

Things get seriously better though when you hit captain and commodore. The double starter set and the extras really put it over the top.
>>
>>43839571

Yes
>>
>>43839629
Thanks. I'm gonna go all in and back Commodore.
>>
>>43839571
These are, battle cruisers released at a later date will all be purchasable via retail or online.
>>
>>43840817

No they are KS only:

How will pledge levels relate to the Battlecruisers? Well, backers can add them in the same way as previous bolt ons for £14 per ship. This allows any backer of any pledge level to add more if they would like (which is understandable given that these models will only ever be available via kickstarter!)

It is in the text for update 22.
>>
>>43841263
>>43840817

Never mind I misread your post cuz I am an idiot.

Me fail English? That impossible!
>>
>>43841263
There will probably be different battlecruisers later.
>>
>2 UCM battlecruisers
>1 battlecruiser for each other faction
This is triggering my autism.
>>
>>43841263
Isn't the Atlantis the only exclusive?

The others will be available later IIRC.
>>
>>43841566
Getting 4 cruisers and one of them being stuck on UCM is annoying me a bit... For similar reasons.
>>
>>43841662
>As we have hinted and many backers have guessed, there are in fact four Battlecruisers to choose from – one for each race, including one for the UCM. They are all Kickstarter exclusive

Also, new update; more pics of battlecruisers, and t-shirt info.

The PHR Battlecruiser looks like a monster. So many guns and so beefy. I have a feeling that one is going to be scary.

Also 93000 pounds until frigates.

One of you guys has to take one for the team and mortgage his home to help the rest of us out.
>>
what are the free upgrades to backers am I missing something? Am I retarded?
>>
>>43842560
Stretch goals; in order, the ones we have now are:

free Scourge cruiser sprue.
free Scourge 4x frigate sprue. (high-tier backers)
free UCM cruiser sprue.
free UCM 4x frigate sprue. (high-tier backers)
free Shaltari cruiser sprue.
free Shaltari 4x frigate sprue. (high-tier backers)
free PHR cruiser sprue.
free PHR 4x frigate sprue. (high-tier backers)

At 500k britbux, everyone will get four free 4x frigate sprues, one per faction.

If we hit that, this means that non high-tier backers will get:
One extra cruiser per faction, and four extra frigates per faction.

While high-tier backers will get:
One extra cruiser per faction, and eight extra frigates per faction.

For a commodore backer who is splitting everything equally between all four factions, this would mean that they'd get:
Twelve frigates, four cruisers, and one battlecruiser per faction, as opposed to the four frigates and three cruisers that come in the starter fleets.
>>
>>43842661
>At 500k britbux, everyone will get four free 4x frigate sprues, one per faction.

Praying for a last-minute surge of backers.
>>
>>43843469
We're about to break 410k pounds, so there may be a chance that we'll make it.
>>
>>43843670
if we get to 430-40 before final day im confident we can make
>>
meh, if the rules are as shitty as DZC not interested
>>
Hey, first time kickstarter backer here, did everyone else not get asked for their entire billing/delivery address when making their pledge?

I only got asked for my country and postal code, but that seems... wrong. Is that a kickstarter thing? Will they be asking for everyone's address once the kickstarter is over?
>>
>>43816299
>>43816317
Ehhh, I can't say I honestly like the UCM ship designs compared to the others.
>>
>>43843670
Kicktraq is projecting well over 500k britbux
>>
>>43845060
Why do you think the DZC rules are shitty? In any case, the rules for this are entirely different, and are slightly reminiscent of BFG (as it should be, since they're written by Andy Chambers)

>>43845170
>Will they be asking for everyone's address once the kickstarter is over?
Yep, it's standard practice for the project maker to do a post-kickstarter survey for physical products and rewards.

>>43845187
It's because of the ventral spires, right? That's the only thing I don't like about the UCM, but I like the rest of their aesthetic.
>>
>>43845319
>Yep, it's standard practice for the project maker to do a post-kickstarter survey for physical products and rewards.

Cool, thanks for hitting me with that knowledge.

Yeah, but it ALWAYS gets responses. ALWAYS. The same responses every time.

It's retarded. It's not even a subtle troll, it's one of the most obvious barefaced unsophisticated troll posts I've seen in weeks.
And yet, it get's guaranteed responses EVERY FUCKING TIME.

I mean, if it was good trolling I'd at least respect the guy for a job well done. But it's not, and we lose like 1/4 to a third of the thread to falling for it EVERY TIME.
>>

Spheres, dude.

Spheres covered in broadsides.
>>
>>43845376
Do you think there will be *fewer* per day in the last days of the kickstarter?
>>
>>43845454

No, I think people who had pressed the "Remind me when this is down to the last 24 hours" button are going to appear and put their cash it then, so you're going to get a surge of people who saw this, thought it seems cool, forgot about it for a bit, and then came back.

Same thing happened for the BT kickstarter, it looks impossible that it'd make the PVP tier going into the final day, and then it smashed it by over 25 grand.

>>43845454
No, I'm certain there will be an upturn in backers in the last week, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough to get us to 500k.
I mean, trust me, I WANT us to hit 500k considering I've sunk 215 britbux into this (150 for commodore, 10 for shipping, 40 for battleship, and 15 more for the 5th battle cruiser and to make it a nice round number), but I'm not totally assured that we will.
>>
>>43845491
Right so then it will be more money than the trend suggests. Over 500k britbux.

The PHR ships should have totally been named after Kabalic and Biblical figures.

It would be glorious.
>>
>>43845920
>>Metatron class battleship
Would there be a STARSCREAM class battlecruiser?
>>
>>43845723
I'd prefer Sumerian deities and heroes.

That said, considering the way their ground troop naming schemes have gone, we may be getting some non-Greek heroes. Cu Chulainn, Gilgamesh and Breunor would make me a happy admiral.
>>
>>43845977
Do you think we'll get an Alexander class battleship, or does he not fit in the theme?
>>
>>43845990
I think we could.

I would have said no, mythics only, but then we got Leonidas.
>>
>>43845977
The Enkidu class destroyer would be some hot shit.

I am one of those. I have been posting about this game since the KS launched. I am going to fund it for sure. I just haven't decided on the level. It will probably Commodore the last day or two.

The reason is I want those BCs, but I am still trying to gather people to help soften the blow.

I don't really know if there are enough us late gamers to bring us up to 500k but I hope so!

It's mostly because they just don't seem structural sound to me, especially the horseshoe shape they're in. But you're right, I don't like the ventral spires either.
