>Today's topic:

Why are Shien and Djem So both considered Form V? Djem So is a slow, heavy, hard-hitting style that largely resembles Kendo, favored by Anakin Skywalker. Shien is a faster, more defensive form aimed at deflecting blaster bolts. Why wouldn't Shien be considered an equivalent form to Soresu?

I have no idea, you just kinda have to fiddle with it until it works. It is best, from what I found, to essentially work backwards at the second half of the lightsaber, so to speak. Put on a new body first, than a switch, than an emitter, blade, and light.

>>
>>43701986

>>
If lightsabers can deflect blasters why don't they make ships out of lightsabers.
>>
>>43702010
The same reason they don't make aeroplanes out of black boxes.
>>
>>43702020

Because it would make it too heavy to fly? I'm not sure if that applies here, anon.
>>
>>43702010
The amount of crystals and power-cells required would be ridiculous. Also the heat would probably cook the ship's insides.
>>
>>43702010
Because a) they only project in straight lines b) they have to be projected from a really pretty sizeable beam projector, and most importantly c) fuck you.
>>
>>43702075
>>43702082

But theoretically

Somebody with enough money could do it

And they would basically be invincible. I don't think heat would be a problem, since as I recall, the way lightsabers work, the emit very little, perhaps none at all, ambient heat. A vessel meant to traverse space would have no difficulty with that, certainly.
>>
>>43702113
Again, it would have to be like, a porcupine, because the beams only project in straight lines.

Plus someone could just shoot a rocket at you and blow you up anyway.
>>
>>43702113
>Somebody with enough money could do it

There may not be enough crystals in the universe.
>>
>>43702129

I can think of a few ways to overlay them properly so that it would offer fairly good coverage while being parallel to the ship.

The only real problem is that some gaps would be necessary for viewing ports, leaving some obvious weak points.
>>
>>43702130

So use synthetic crystals.
>>
>>43702141
And again, any normal ship would just launch a salvo of rockets at it and destroy it.

Plus a turbolaser still has enough energy to overload the sabers or something.
>>
>>43702113
You know what else deflects blaster bolts?

Energy shields. Which ships have.

Sabershields just wouldn't be reasonable. The emitter is proportionately much larger than a shield generator, and they can only be projected in a straight line whereas energy shields conform to the size of the ship, up to and including protecting the generator that's emitting them. A sabershield can't protect itself, it can only protect what's in front of it. The best you could essentially do is make a cone, with a fat ass aft section that's completely vulnerable, adding SUBSTANTIALLY to the size and power draw of your ship. Plus, you can't shoot out.

Sure, you could put in a shield generator as well to protect the vulnerable saber emitters, but if you're going to just add a shield generator anyway it doesn't make any sense to sacrifice so much size, energy consumption, and cost for all those emitters when you could just upgrade your shields for more protection, less size, less power draw, and cheaper cost.
>>
>>43702146
>so use unstable shit that may explode on you

So much for invincible. Also, creating that many crystals of that magnitude would kill the person trying to do it really early on, and there are only a few darksiders left who know how.

So what does TG think of my saber polearm? 32" blade as the main weapon with a backup "surprise" emitter in the bottom that would have a very short parry blade. But even when the parry blade is turned off, you can use the emitter to bludgeon somebody to death.

14 inch hilt and a 32 inch amber blade, with a transparisteel window to prevent those nasty emitter window accidents everyone's so worried about.

Really, one would hope that any Padawan who decides to put a window on their emitter piece has been properly educated on how to handle a lightsaber without torching your own fingers off. Only reason it even happens is due to the fact that the laserbrains who are more interested in looking cool over using proper lightsaber forms are the ones that keep coming in for treatment.

Would that even work?
I thought lightsaber parts were fragile and delicate, doing something like that would break it.
>>
>>43703435
They are delicate because they generally aren't meant for bashing things, not because some reality warping phenomenon says they can't be sturdy regardless of how you make them.
>>
>>43703447
Except it might possibly be a case of the innards getting knocked out of place or breaking from the shock force of actually swinging it like a mace at full strength against a surface. You can make the hilt near indestructible sure, but the saber might not turn on if you bash someone's head in with it. It's not that the insides can't take any shock, but there might be a limit on it that exceeds simply swinging them about in sword fighting.

That said, fuck if I know, and there's not much point to it outside of stubbornly just wanting to hit things with a solid object when your saber's blade is way better at it.
>>
Thoughts?
>>
>>43703493
>Except it might possibly
Except it might not

>there might be a limit on it
and there might not be

hurr hurr

*might* isn't a very good argument, anon.

Fact is that this is futuristic tech we're talking about here, and you could probably do the job with real world tech. If you ask me it isn't unreasonable at all to think someone could harden their saber if they wanted to use it as a mace part time.

If the crystals fall out of alignment or something, then just make their frame more sturdy. If the electronics get busted, then stop using cheap chinese knockoffs.
>>
>>43703493
Perhaps you are trying NOT to kill someone, or cripple them? Knocking someone out with a blunt object gives them a much higher life expectancy than cutting them in half with an elongated loop of plasma.

Most of these are coming from mass produced parts, much like the Cusom Saber Shop's modular hilt system (Over here! http://forums.thecustomsabershop.com/mhsbuilder/mhsbuilder.php It's got fewer options and it isn't 3D, so I didn't bother to post it in the OP.) and it's hard for saber-smiths to manage a curved blade. Even most of the big name smiths tend to avoid it due to the difficulty of squeezing the electronics in around the curve.

Looks like it wouldn't be the best to use with two hands, although not as bad as some others.

Also, do the colors of the blade have any effect on the performance of the weapons, or is all the practical difference in the handle/crystal and blade length?

The problem was that he went for a compressed gas flamethrower rather than a liquid pump one. Of course, if he'd gone for a liquid one it would have required a backpack so big he couldn't have taken a jetpack, so I guess you gotta prioritize.

>>43708237
All lightsabers work as two handed swords, but you might look into Kylo Ren's one from the new movie. It has a crossguard.
>>
>>43702207
Cool, I always thought it strange that you never see saber pole arms anywhere in Starwars seeing how melee warfare eventually advanced to the point where everyone was just trying to outreach eachother with pikes, halberds, and stupidly long duelling swords.

This has a vintage look, to me at least. Like the wielder found it in the attic of his deceased uncle's 70s style ski chalet, probably in a box wedged underneath an orange corduroy sofa.

>>43703399
That's one long ass hilt, why is there on grip for a small section of the bottom end? I'd imagine it would make more sense to have it higher up towards the emitter where grip strength is critical.

>>43703521

That doesn't make any sense though, why would they choose to constantly try to dodge, nearly getting their shit blown up every time, rather than easily deflect it back and destroy their attacker who they're trying to kill anyways? Eg., Obi-Wan getting shot at by Boba in the Slave One in Clones?

>>
>>43708413
Fair enough. I've just done some research, in Legends Kyp Durron, Jaina Solo, and some other guy have canonically deflected ship mounted blaster cannons, but that was because they were immensely strong warriors. Ezra is a fucking kiddie who's been using the force for like a week and a lightsaber for ever less, which is I think what bothers me most. Kanan doing it might rustle me a little, but at least he's a knight and can kind of explain it.

Though coming back to the strength thing, I wonder if a static, mounted lightsaber would be as "strong" as a saber wielded by a strong jedi? Sort of "the strongest oak bends in the wind," a saber glued to a ship couldn't dynamically redistribute momentum to any degree whatsoever.
>>
>>43708519
It probably just jars your hands more when you block it, which is why you don't want to be blocking hi-power lasers or automatic blasters. But yes, Ezra is a little kid and should not be able to do it perfectly.

>>
>>43708270
No, the empire has taught us the way you fight the Jedi is with a combination of hostile warfare to suppress the rebuilding of fortifications and training grounds a long with the use of highly skilled assassins whose sole job is to hunt down and kill highly thought of (but not necessarily the most skilled) Jedi.

This prevents the Jedi from being able to establish the stable training and recruitment systems necessary for them to begin the decades long process of training new members. It also demoralizes the Jedi by using a few select killers to take out high-value targets and bring command into disarray forcing the lesser Jedi into hiding or seclusion.

The trick is to prevent replenishment and do your best to scatter them, after that old age will claim most of the survivors in a decade since the young and bold (but relatively inexperienced) warriors will likely die or be wounded in battle.

You may even convince some to join you or others may simply give up the Jedi path altogether to live a relatively safe and normal life.

You defeat the Jedi in the realm of the mind not the body. Except the old ones, you just let time finish killing those crusty fuckers off.

Personally I'd rather have a lightsaber variant I can throw around with the Force.

stick eight emitters on a ring, slap a forcefield on the side, I'd have a light-shuriken 4 meters across I could just toss through a bunch of mooks at waist level. It'd be so much easier than going after them one-by-one.

>>43714675
Why should it have blades at all then? It should just be a plasma ball.

So a grenade, basically.

Why don't jedi use grenades anyway, they could just home them in on the target.
>>
>>43713779
I liked it better when it looked like it was going to be a disguised welder/blaster pistol that was secretly a lightsaber.
>>
>>43714352
>purely aesthetic

>>
>>43712743
Look it up. I don't mean that in a jackass way, there's tons of ways to make lightsabers out of household bullshit. The original lightsaber was just a camera flash stick, a strip off of a calculator, and some windshield wipers, after all.

1-1/2 inch steel or aluminum pipe, about a foot long will do you fine. You can get a lot of mileage out of O-rings, and any flared drain half a doorknob could work as an emitter. For a pommel, almost any endcaps could work. Obi-wan's original came off of a faucet.
>>
>>43712379
Go with a D-ring.

I've got a few, and the covertech knobs (that's the brand, Covertech) are generally uncomfortable. The covertech holders for the belt also stand a chance of getting stuck, and they're more expensive than your standard D-ring.
>>
>>43707974
>why wouldn't Luke just stand in the death of the Death Star laser and deflect it?
Because he is crybaby and has no balls. He never did any cool stuff, he could not even beat emperor without his father's help. Luke is shitty jedi.
>>
>>43715094
Has a holster ever been a thing? It could be much more secure and you could also put some kind of saber-proof safety plate over the emitter.
>>
>>43715307
>Luke is shitty jedi.
Of course he is, he never finished his training because he had to save his friends. This is what the old order was talking about when they sad no personal attachments!
>>
>>43715338
No.

Don't get me wrong, there's probably some instance of people carrying a lightsaber in a messenger tube, but it's easier to leave it disassembled and reassemble it on the fly if stealth is needed. Most of the time, a Jedi wants the lightsaber out in the open, as a badge of authority.
>>
>>43715422
Well it would certainly be more functional. No flopping around, easy access, plus all of the safety features you could add, including a protective plate and even a hardshell cover over the switch. I'd expect the saber itself would have a safety, though.
>>
>In truth, the Sith normally wielded enough powers to fight without a lightsaber, but every apprentice still learned to use one as part of his or her training. Sidious himself felt that he and his peers had outgrown the use of lightsabers, and only continued carrying them to mock the Jedi. He ultimately viewed his own lightsabers as little more than an affectation, and rarely wielded them in combat.
>>
>>43715359
>he had to save his friends
He can finish his training and save them latter. As I say previously, he has no balls, and that's the real problem.

>As lightsaber crystals didn't make their appearance in Star Wars mythos until later, the color difference between Jedi and Sith lightsabers was originally thought to reflect the personality of the wielder. This erroneous viewpoint was even supported by the comic book adaptation of Return of the Jedi, which depicted Luke Skywalker's lightsaber emitting a red blade when Vader ignited it.

>While the idea that lightsaber blade colors reflected the personality of the wielders was eventually corrected, red crystals weren't actually established to be synthetic in nature until the release of Star Wars Insider 62 in 2002, though the existence of synth-crystals was established in the Expanded Universe novel Shadows of the Empire, though they were not referred to as such.[11][12]
>>
fairly short handle, just a simple blade. and green is best colour
>>
>>43715543
That's ignoring the fact that it's a symbol. It would be like a Highway Patrolman putting his badge and gun into a tupperware container strapped to his belt.

Also, the covertech knobs that the prequel lightsabers, and most commercial sabersmiths, use keeps the hilt from flopping as you run.

Even if you didn't want that, there's also the Yoda option of having it attached to your belt via magnetic plate or some other clamp.

>>43715763
Problem is, his friends didn't really need him. He accomplished nothing by going to Hoth except endangering himself, losing his lightsaber, and getting his hand lopped off. He didn't even manage to return to Yoda for a solid year, at which point the little goblin dude was already dying. He basically spent a year planning with the Rebels and reading some of Obi-Wan's notes before rescuing Han, rather than training with Yoda and Obi-Wan on Dagobah for another year.

In one of the comics (or novels? It's been a while) Vader trained a few force-sensitive Fett Clones that were specially created on Kamino to act as anti-Jedi Stormtroopers. There was only around six or so of them, but the project didn't work out in the end.
>>
>>43716759
I think it was a short story that was adapted into a comic. I can't remember, but it was written by Traviss. They weren't clones of Fett, though, but of some force-sensitive Hand or Inquisitor IIRC.

Are you guys sure he's not referring to Duel of Fates? Could be referencing the melody in the very beginning. iirc his feats stand at :
>>stunned and beat a lot of storm troopers
>>freed some wookies
>>infiltrated the local imperial acadamy for about three days
>>give in to the dark side for about five minuetes and control a giant bat bear
>>had a jedi vision quest
>>built his lightsaber, glued a blaster to the front of it
>>beaten by but escaped from darth vader

All feats assisted by a anti imperial terrorist cell, and later by some rebels. Pretty much everythign else in the series was done by someone else on the team.
>>
>>43718225
Simple but notably elegant. The choice of black metal shows a narcissistic streak, tempered by a disciplined and spartan side that holds no truck with flash that actualy gets in the way of the light sabers use.

An aesthetic ascetic.

>>43718392
A duelist fond of comfort. Some may see them as too close to the dark side, but this is probably untrue. This is probably not the first lightsaber this jedi has built.

>>43720254
A complicated design built by someone who likes to show what they know. Probably a Consular Researcher who knows much of engineering. Not a field Jedi, and not someone who likely interacts much with non Jedi.

>>43718911
A saber built all for strength and reach, diverging considerably from traditional Jedi design. Most likely a fallen or dark Jedi, if this was built by a Jedi at all, and not a Force Adept finding their own way in the galaxy. And one who likes to fight.

Still they are not Sith, or least, not a True Sith, though they may have been led astray.

Can't lie, I love the idea of a lightsaber polearm (lightpike, I think?), even though it invalidates a lot of the practical aspects of a lightsaber like the small size. Also, that purple leather is just fabulous.
In battle I imagine it'd be used somewhat like a guan dao?

My mistake. I was crashing at that point. Thanks for the correction.
>>

>>
>>43722427
The facts about bullets in Star Wars: They're generally useless against high-quality body armor, barely scratching Stormtrooper gear. They're faster than blaster bolts and have the advantage that no one can see them to track your position. And you can vary the bullet types with explosives, igniting, fragmentation, armor piercing, and the like.

That said, there's two schools of thought about them.

The first: Jedi can't block bullets because it would only partially melt and they'd get a face full of molten lead running at bullet speed. To my knowledge, there's no canon or Legends evidence of this, but it's common sense.

The second: Jedi can block bullets with lightsabers, but since bullets fire faster than blaster bolts, it's harder for them to do and a fully automatic weapon could overwhelm them.

The second has some support in canon. Luke and one of his apprentices, in an early story, deflect some kind of special metal arrows with their lightsabers. Mace Windu (I think, might've been someone else), in the Genndy cartoon also uses his lightsaber to deflect rapidfire... somethings that are either fucked up arrows, flechettes, or flying blades, with no melting issues.
>>
>>43722492
What about RPGs?
>>
>>43722492
>>43722427
I always assumed the bullets would be vaporized by the sheer heat of the blade, but doing so would be ill advised thanks to lead being toxic, and presumably lead VAPOR being much more so.

What I always imagined is that jedi have to swing in a large arc when blocking bullets so that they redirect the molten material away from their bodies.

Most of the lightsaber grips are pretty bad, just smooth metal. you know how slippery those things get with palm sweat? Leather bodied and knurling bodies the best.
