>Executioners sergeant again, now with marginally better light.

I was the one that asked in the last thread (>>43596036). Looks *really* nice! Bet those yellow parts were a real pain, huh?
>>
>>43608648

Small pic, still looks sweet.

Looks clean, can't wait to see more

(want to use them as allies for my DA)
>>
>>43608648

I get this weird feeling that you used the wrong base tone for the skin...or maybe the wrong wash. He just looks sort of...pallid. Pale, or something.

I use Vallejo, and my army is guard, so maybe that's what you were going for? It looks odd to me.
>>
>>43608732

I should make an addendum to this. Besides the face, that looks EXCELLENT, and I WISH I could get fabrics as smooth as that flag.

Positive feedback is always nice, so thanks! And, well, it's yellow, so that's pretty much a given. The circle on the banner needs a few more coats.

>>43608698
Thanks, would like to get better pictures, but a camera is kinda out of my price range at the moment, so I'm (and by extension, you) stuck with my cellphone.

>>43608732
I was actually just trying out the "new" GW flesh colors, and I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out, so I'm probably going back to my old recipe. Pic related, the light's a bit shit but you get the gist of it. Still pale, but it just looks better to me.
>>
>>43608749
The black flag was probably the easiest part, besides the armor... It's just a vallejo german grey highlight ontop of black primer, another highlight of vallejo london grey and a black wash on top of that.

Yellow needs a few more coats and I might touch up the red, not really satisfied with it at the moment.
>>
>>43609091
The skin tone looks great, don't listen to that poster.
>>
>>43609091

I quite like these guys, though the yellow could use a highlight and the lenses could be a little brighter but that might just be the lighting

Anyway, I love space wolves.

Dark Angel guy back again

Half way through my second bike, this is a Champion. Not sure how I want to do his sword with all the runes inscribed.

The skull alter cabinet thing is tough, and there arelittle wires leading into the back that blow my mind.

Followed some advice and did the eyes before everything else and it turned out better there.

How should I go about doing the headlight? I was thinking of mixing my brighter yellow (not the golden one I use in the scheme) and mix it with white for a pastelish color so it looks like its bright? No idea

I also need a brighter blue to highlight the plasma I am going to do.

My third will be an apothecary and I have a question about their color scheme once I take a picture.

Help.
>>
>>43610145

You'll get over it at some point. I mean, you could die at any time of every day so to avoid that crushing reality you need distractions right? There's no point in saving money, very few people actually make it to a "happy old age" and most of those people are miserable anyway. Better enjoy life while you can before it stomps on your nads and leaves you crying in a pool of your own vomit in a damp dark room without anyone to console you.

Think of that next time you hold a box of minis you really want. Happy thoughts, have a fun day!

My question about the apothecary (left) is in the picture they are almost a negative of the usual ravenwing biker colors on the right.

So with my yellow/purple/white color scheme should my apothecary's armor be all yellow instead of purple?
>>

>>
I just spent ten minutes trying to find my biker champions face to no avail. Why do I paint near so much shit.
>>
>>43610497

I can try and make that work but it may blow over a gray primer.

I heard white is pretty hard to work with and showing details may be a nightmare.
>>
>>43610623

You're supposed to make it mostly grey with ivory (broken white) as your main color and white highlights. Going all white is just unsightly and frustrating.
>>
>>43610623
are you not the anon who just posted a pic of a RW champ with a white robe you painted? white can be tricky to get smooth, but if you're patient, many thin layers will get you there
>>
>>43610623
What >>43610654 said, go for ivory and light grey and only use pure white for the top highlights. It should feel white, not actually be pure white. As that is really tricky to get right. :)

>>43610926

Yeah not to be mean but I'd hack those apart, even the canteens are quite easy to remove with a saw. There's thick paint all over, as well as mold lines. Seriously though, a good saw costs like 10 dollar and will save you hundreds are you cut apart ebay rescues to keep this hobby affordable.

>>
>>43611032

That should give you a feeling on how to use colors and techniques properly.
>>

The only problem so far is the saw you mentioned
I'm still new to this so I wanna know what kind of saw you're talking about because I'm clueless
>>
>>43610358
Do you post your fashion stuff around at all? I had a bf that used to do that stuff and it seemed fairly nifty.
>>
>>43611113

I have one of these babies, they are great for starting out on small stuff. There are also jeweler saws but they're harder to use because of their less static nature, though they are better for cutting up huge models. For everything else, this is my main saw.

http://www.ebay.nl/itm/ZONA-ULTRA-THIN-RAZOR-SAW-35-050-EXPO-76060-CUTS-WOOD-PLASTIC-METAL-/311479035145?hash=item488598e509:g:HI0AAOxyY9VRUdje

Be careful not to saw your hands, tables and the elbows of your minis because sawing off an arm takes about 3 seconds. The first time I tried it on a berzerker shoulder joint and I accidentally cut through his gun on the front of the model as well.
>>
>>43611023
Just water, but if flow improver helps with brush strokes I'll definitely use it on the more troublesome colors.

I'm going to paint some Black Templars, but I don't like Black color schemes because you can't shade it so it looks less interesting than other colors.

So, I was thinking that maybe I can paint them dark gray instead, so I can give them some more details, is it a good idea? has anyone made it before?(pls post pics if yes), will people end up asking me if Grey templars are some kind of homebrew chapter? What colors would be the most appropiate for it?
>>
>>43612770

While it's true that black armor can't really be shaded, there's a number of techniques you can apply, such as using Eshin Grey to highlight edges.

As a Raven Guard player, I know how frustrating it can be to take everything you know about painting and throw it out the window because everything's black.

>>43612770
Don't go with grey. If you want to try to do shading, mix with brown. Personally, I do my edge highlights in hoeth blue and everything else in drybrush astronomicon. Rounded surfaces actually look pretty good if you just do light gray drybrushing.

The bigger part you're probably going to have a problem with is the white. One of the reasons why we mix with brown is to tie into the pauldrons. Stepping through grey tends to look horrible, so most of us go through brown, starting with a foundation, then ushabti, then into white. It cuts down on the number of layers and tends to look smoother.

>>43612770

You can use skavenblight dinge or vallejo sea grey over black to creat lighter spots on the armor but be aware this is really hard to pull off well. If you do, you can make really cool effects with it such as OSL and armor damage

Should I highlight the black areas? I'm always on the fence about that
>>
>>43613490

Painting before full assembly is the norm, just assemble as far as you can while still being able to reach everything with a brush properly
>>
>>43613490
It depends on the model and what you're doing. Generally, if a piece blocks access to another, it may be wise to paint in pieces. Skitarii, for instance, are practically made out of brush obstructions.
>>
>>43613490
>Is it a bad idea to paint before assembling? Will that make it impossible to put together?

Well, a later-edition backpack makes sense. One thing you'll have to be carful of is the shoulder pauldrons that have the raised edges often interfere with the exhaust vents on normal Mk VII backpacks. You might have to select a different model (Mk III or Mk IV), or else customize it so it sits some distance from the normal attachment nub on the model's back.

I myself am partial to back banners, too, but I know a lot of folks who started later in 40K's evolution find them stupid-looking.

Totally normal hobby behaviour.
Things that help most imo:
>keep your work area neat. If you got to clean for half an hour before doing anything you won't do anything.
>Keep your finished stuff in sight and your unfinished stuff out of sight. Good for motivation.
>Make hobby time a habit. Everyday half an hours or so will get you incredibly far. It's also the best way to overcome the initial hesitance to sit down and do something at all.

I managed to have a model on my desk for over 5 years without touching it, when I did those three things I mentioned above though I painted ~50 minis in a month.
>>
>>43610497
>Apothecaries almost always have white on them

Fixed.

Some rare situations have apothecaries that aren't majority white. E.g. legion apothecaries, unorthodox chapters, etc, who just use shoulder colors or arm colors to show their position. So an EC apothecary would be purple and gold with white shoulders/helm/arms.

I can't think of any canonical examples of an apothecary with zero white on them but it may exist.

Bruh, get more light in your photography area so we can make out your models better.

As for painting fatigue, that's easy. Do something else for a while. I keep math and physics books around for when I'm too tired to paint. I'm also learning japanese because arabic was too annoying. It also helps to have different kinds of models around so you can do different color schemes. Painting grots is a personal favorite.
>>
>>43616567

Not that I want to get into this with you but work is actually fun most of the time. It feels good to have people need you and having too much free time is just depressing.
>>
>>43616622

Start with some cultists. Black isn't a problem if you use citadel base paints or vallejo's heavy range.

Seriously though, what kind of mega autist gets angry over models you plan on working on in a WIP thread

8 hour work days was invented by Ford to increase production or economy or some shit. It used to be 6 hour work days, unless you were a farmer or some shit in which you basically lived and worked simultaneously, so while you may have had 12+ hour work days, you weren't exactly "on the job" non stop 24/7 and were basically self employed.
>>
>>43616567

How does the guy on the right afford anything? Also more money = more wants is false. I would definitely not work if I could just have no bills that I'd have to pay, but life doesn't work that way. And when I have more spending money, I just basically buy what I always do. I have noticed some power creep in my spending desires though. I used to want Magic cards and video games which were all under $100, then I went up to computers and 40k which are measured in hundreds to one thousand, and now I have to deal with cars and shit which cost a shit ton. If I won the lottery I wouldn't magically be buying mansions and lamborghinis. Never understood how lottery winners go broke.
>>
>>43616622
Primer black helps with shading. Primer white gives you the opposite problem. Now your have to use washes or some other way to prime.

Priming black is correct unless you're advanced enough to know exactly why you want to prime any other color.

For instance, a white robe, should be primed white. All other colors, black.
>>
>>43619630
I've seen plenty of stuff about 6 hour work days having a positive effect on productivity.
>>
>>43619669

I wouldn't doubt it. Also, 3 day weekends increase productivity and happiness as well according to one dude's article about productivity and work enjoyability, even if it requires working 10 hours a day for 4 days.

>guy on the left

>I have noticed some power creep in my spending desires though.

Well there you go.

I remember reading something about how the rise of women in the work force and "strong independent woman who don't need no man" has led to plenty of dudes just not give a shit anymore. When they're living for themselves and don't need to git gud to pay for their wife and family, they get by quite meagerly and don't see the reason the strive for excess of wealth. Doesn't mean they're lazy, they just don't need to impress anyone else and do what they want.
>>
>>43619630
I wish 8 hour work day was still a reality, but there's not a single fucking job in my country outside of unreachable gov jobs that give you 8 hour work day.
>>
>>43619702
>Well there you go.

Except I'm not buying Benzes or vacations in Cancun.

Going from no car to a modest $30,000 car isn't nearly the same. The BRZ is pretty much the cheapest new hobby car you can get, since $20,000 gets you garbage like Civics and Corollas. Old cars like S2000 and Supras cost a lot of money and banks won't finance such old cars. And if you're one of those "hur dur just drive a $800 beater car" faggots, then don't even bother to respond.
>>
>>43619702

Don't pretend like poorfags don't have the same desires as buying a nice car. They just know they'll never have one so they don't think about it and mentally block it out.

Like how everyone would want a mansion or a Ferrari, but know we can't so we just don't dwell on it. But once we CAN afford it, that's why people buy expensive useless shit.

If the jobless basement dweller could afford expensive shit he'd buy it too. He's already playing video games and buying weight sets with zero income. Those are things he can't afford.

Sure, if I were a rich man (ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum), I could buy a fuck ton of shit and probably would. But do I NEED it? I get on by with that I make, find enjoyment from my job and free time, etc. I can live without Ferraris and mansions. I prioritize my expenses and save a little to do all the things I really want to do. Like take trips abroad or something like that.

$30k on a car is just pure masturbation. My business partner bought a 35k BMW only to sell it 2 years later for half that because it was so damn expensive to drive. Unless it's a rare car used as a show model, cars are horrible investments. You're better off with precious metals, property you can rent out or stock from large dividend paying companies. There are perfectly safe, drivable and affordable cars where you don't pay a tons for the brand name and performance that's useless on public roads.

Almost anything has a better ROI than a brand new car. Even miniatures are more value steady. On that note, what are you guys working on right now? I've just finished cleaning 5 skeletons but I'm stilk thinking of using the armored chests instead of the ribcages.

Sure I work a lot, but I get the adequate salary, and I work happy, knowing that I will never be in the position of saying no to my kids for something they deserve, like a place in a good university, because daddy couldn't be arsed to work more. Here are the options I would consider for RG:

- Dark base, to go with their camouflage theme. Cons: Makes models hard to see.
- Light base, such as desert or ice, to create contrast and let the models stand out.
- Base that matches your table/other armies.
- Generic brown/urban base as it will be the most common type of table in stores/other peoples' houses.

For my army that is a dark color, I chose desert as it is my preferred location for tables, basing, etc, and it created contrast with my dark miniatures. I also love recreating desert areas from video games like Diablo II, Diablo III, Ragnarok Online, Borderlands, etc. Nearly every video game has a very cool desert area. Many 40K locations are also deserts or wastelands.

Must be nice, trustfund kiddies. If this logic worked why wouldn't we have our own money from OUR parents?
>>
>>43633117

Ease up on the trigger when you're spraying that primer. You've laid it on way too thick.

You don't NEED a solid coat of white, and if you do, make sure it's not so thick as to lessen details. You can tell the paint is very thick by the depth of the fingerprints you've left and how it's clogging and glooping on the basing material.

It's not "oh god thin your paints" thick but it's already beginning to ruin finer details like the groin pteruge studs.
>>
Why aren't there any Kings of War gens up? I thought it was fairly popular
>>
>>43633505
Nah it's not the primer too thick, well it is on the base. But most of the parts used on this were old/stripped. Was only after priming it that I realised some parts needed more work. I've spent so much time on the mini that I was like "fuck it, I'll scratch those details out later, I just need to see this with paint on it"

Although, I accidentally hit the right leg with a bit too much primer, looked OK after drying though. And yeah the base was primed separately and thicker.

Keep in mind I've been out of the hobby for ages. This is technically my first conversion/primed/painted model (was practicing without primer, for easy stripping) in years.
>>
>>43633117
looking great dude

Looking at the mini, I can say that the marine itself seem to be primed ok... but I agree with anon that the base is really really thick. Like... it looks like plaster.

>>
>>43635837

Looks good. I've had many times I wanted to GS a cloak on the model but didn't bother, and it's quite hard to find a good cloak bit that works with a specific pose.

The raggedy parts look fine IMO. If you cannot clean them up to a straight edge, just make it even more raggedy, IMO. Like a torn cloth effect.

One thing though is that your cloak is lacking some physics and folds at the top. The part that curves over the shoulder should have a some wrinkles and folds, and you will also need one or more large "U" folds where the cloak is sagging from being draped in two spots. May also want to cut a hole for the backpack. Actually, the backpack may cover the need for the center wrinkles.

Here's how I make greenstuff cloaks.

Take some baking paper and fold it once. Stick a blob of greenstuff in the fold and press it flat with a rolling pin or a book or what have you. Wait for half an hour for the greenstuff to cure slightly, then cut it to shape and apply to model.

The fold makes one straight line for you, so you can angle the other edge however you like.

If I want the cloak to flap in the wind I blu tack some sticks to paint pots and use them to suspend the cloak in a position I want.

Isn't that how most people do it? It seems like the most logical and effective solution.
For figurines glued on their bases, I use balsa wood. For small parts with a "glue point" (An area that will be glued later, and don't need special attention, like the junction between an arm and the torso), I just take spare junk from plastc kits (You know, what's left when you detached every piece from their base), put a small ammount of putty on them, and add the part to prime on it. Way more efficient, and it allows for the paint to dry safely.
>>
>>43637203
I'd say to make them completely then paint, apart from the pieces that can be added seperately later.
>>
>>43637365
Gotcha. I meant should I break up making the terrain with painting each in between or go gun-ho and make every last one then sit to paint them?

The massive hammer is great too as it just seems like a slightly larger hammer to him but I sure wouldn't want to get in it's way. What are the wings going to be like, anyway? Organic? Mechanical? A fusion? The flesh of any of his "crew" that decided to take a break stretched over the girder wing like structure impaled in his back?
>>
>>43637480
Oh. I prefer to always make the part alone, then out the whole thing together with miniatures, can't say with terrain though. I do this because I don't trust my paintings skills and I find it easier to handle small pieces, but then again, I'm not an expert.

Sup /tg/, noob here. Can I use a watered down bormal paint as a wash? Or are washes more special than that?
>>
>>43640287
You can. A wash is more of a specific technique for a desired result (pooled paint in recesses) than it is some specific formula. Stuff like GW Shades have some extra stuff thrown into them to help achieve this goal (which they do very well), but that doesn't mean you can't wash stuff without them.

It's gonna look like shit if you don't strip the paint first.

Just let your minis soak in Simple Green or Pinesol for a day or two and scrub them with with a toothbrush.

Depending on how thick the paint is it can work without stripping them.

Since they are your old and badly painted miniatures, i assume the paint is rather thick so you might want to strip them.

The scar kinda looks like bloody bird poop. I don't know, maybe it's just the perspective, where you can't see the pattern and it just looks like something spilled on his head, but maybe changing the color a bit more would help or defining the outline more, like adding arrowheads.

Sand is one of those things that doesn't scale-down well, such that sugar sand still makes 28mm infantry all look like they're fighting over a volleyball court.

I use "parakeet gravel." It's made from coarse quartz, crushed seashell and Hartz Mountain adds teeny-tiny charcoal briquettes to the mix, to sweeten Budgie's breath or something. Anyway, the combination of odd shapes and textures achieves the "splodey-bits and rubble" look I prefer, since none of my figs are desert-themed.

YMMV

So my new project is to turn all of this into one cohesive terrain set for AoS. Should be a lot of fun. Any ideas what I could turn the craters into?

Try craters, no but seriously what's the theme here? You could fill them with water effects for lushious ponds or foul pools of fetid waters of nurgle. Blood for khorne, some rainbow colored drug pit for slaanesh etc

Well I want to keep it pretty general, so that the terrain would fit comfortably in most realms, but I don't want it to be boring. Some kind of water is a good idea, maybe just a weird colour like a purple or something?

It really really depends on whether you're going dark necromancer or bright happy go lucky wizards have no sense of wrong or right here. You could for example, fill a crater full of AK 47's as a gag OR do water effects that are pretty dark and have skeletons, snakes or other critters crawl out.

Ideas a plenty man, I'm an idea guy for a living. Just need a general direction here.

If it was still applicable to AoS I'd say Morrstone comets or something.
Really kinda envious of that sorcerer's tower. Wish GW would still sells their old WHFB scenery. And the LotR stuff.
Or Renedra would fill that gap already.

Crashed meteors are not a bad idea whatsoever. I may experiment with that. Could do some heat effects underneath them with my airbrush too, would look rather cool.

I collected the fantasy scenery over the years for reasons I'm not entirely sure, but I'm glad I did. The Skullvane Manse was second hand and in crap condition, missing many bits. I have started to salvage it. Made it so that I can either have the observatory on top of a tower or remove the tower and have it as a separate building. Need to magnetise it still though, and find a new lens for the telescope itself.

You can cut up something to look like warpstone and put those in the middle of the craters, then they make a somewhat convincing objective as well.

What would be a cool alternate color for Red Scorpions? I just got the BaC box and want to play them, but not sure I want to paint them grey or black since my other army is grey (knights). I was thinking a dark red body with white shoulder pads and white helmets on the apothecaries. Any ideas?

He is Slaanesh, geese. He needs to FEEL those feels. As much as it pains me to say this word, Slaanesh is turbo "edgy" every single breath.
