sup TG, i have been working on and off this rhino the past few weeks for my Taurans army. Got bored and wanted to do the sides of the tank up nice. I'm a hobby artist and usually do nature scenery in oil, so using citadel paints to do portraits is sort of not in my ball park, and most of my models are painted to only look decent at a glance, i spent more time on veterans and terminators. so i guess this can be a general discuss thread cause i can't sleep and i'm going to post some pics of my Tauran models and some models i painted for friends. ask me about warhammer or tell me about your army or whatever.

The character on the rhino is based on my custom chapter master Maurin RomHoove, (Totaly original, I know) but he has 2 power fists, 1 wrist mounted storm boltgun and a storm shield made from the hatch of a reclaimed vindicator.

Before the freehand conversion.

The right and top look good, but the marine looks really off.

He looks more like he is surprised and/or fearful at a roach on the wall than anything else.

The powerfist itself looks really small in comparison to everything else and likewise, the bolter looks a bit too large.

There is some weird perspective thing going on or something with his torso and pauldrons. Either a big head or a small chest.

Jesus Christ, dude... Are you trying to paint a house? Thin your paints. Your models look like ass even without the freehand portraits. Doubly so with them.
>>
I guess when you do oil paintings, nobody cares if the paint gets a bit thick.

With minis, it's the opposite. You should basically NEVER have ANY perceivable thickness to the paint whatsoever. It should be completely and utterly flat, so that it neither adds nor removes any detailing or shape to the mini. No brush strokes, no blobs, not thicker parts, nothing.

The rhino looks like it was base coated with black chewing gum.

The marine looks really cartoonish IMO. Which seems like a rather unorthodox stylistic choice for the astartes when decorating their vehicles.

I can barely see what the fuck is going on here, but what I see looks, no. No.

Here, sit down and read this: http://www.mediafire.com/view/e19kvsd2e2va1rj/How_to_Paint_Citadel_Miniatures_2004.pdf

Obviously it will only look at GW products (and generally OOP ones) but the techniques and ideas work with whatever suitable acrylics and brushes you feel like.

Then grab Photoshop and try the Auto-stuff and Shadows/highlights.

If your really fucked up the colors/white balance (which shouldn't happen with a backdrop) then the Auto stuff won't cut it. Go into levels, select the whit, grey or black dropper, and then click something in the image that's suppsoed to be mroe or less white/grey/black. Click around a bit until it's less awful.

You can also adjust manually with the levels curves and stuff, but that's getting within sight of some semblance of actual competence, so if you choose to go there I cannot follow.
>>
Never seen paint that fuckin thick, and I've been in the hobby since I was 6.
Also, read the above posts on how to take a picture.
