Drifting high above the column of marching soldiers you're afforded an unrivaled view of the desert. Darzi and her contingent of camel riders split off of the main body of the army hours ago. Occasionally you'll catch a glimpse of her forces to the northeast, far ahead of the main column, but for the most part she and her men remain well hidden. Your own forces ride or sail near the front of the column, behind your brother's personal bodyguard composed of your family's elite retainers.

The enemy's own column of soldiers creeps towards you with aching slowness. The camp spotted you a few minutes ago, you're not sure exactly when. Its location was well chosen. Your only real avenue of approach was through the dried up riverbed, giving your the bandit army plenty of time to muster its forces in preparation. You must say, there's more of them than you were expecting. Shouldn't they be too busy shitting themselves to mount any sort of major resistance?

Your brother barks out an order and it's soon being repeated up and down the column. You can't make out exactly what he said, but the column stops and soldiers begin busting out skins of water. Seems your brother has decided here is as good a place to stop as any, and is giving the soldiers some time to rest before the battle begins.

Zahak 3.jpg

If you had to guess, most of the fighting will take place along the broad, flat expanse of sand on the southern side of the riverbed. The ground there is dotted with stone, leading you to believe that the sand layer is thinner there than eslewhere. You're sure that both sides will want a field of battle where their forces will be confident in their footing. Indeed some of your brother's troops are already occupying the flatlands, setting up tents and establishing ramshackle fortifications.

Zahak dips one of his wings and begins slowly circling the army, just as Mortia's voice drifts through your thoughts. {Your brother has decided to wait here until such a time as the enemy army is close enough to engage. He ask that you join him in his command tent when you are available.}

>Fly ahead to scout out the bandit army and their camp, try to figure out why so many of them are well enough to face you.
>Ignore your brother's orders in favor of joining your Vatis to harry the advancing enemy army. Create pit traps, pick off targets of opportunity, and maybe have Zahak scorch a few of them.
>Best to hurry up and join your brother, he probably wants to discuss battle strategy, or maybe he wants you to be present when he meets the enemy commander for negotiations. Have Zahak land so you can dismount.

But do it quick so we can set the tone of the battle by raining fire down on the enemy from a fucking dragon
>>
>>42910421
I want to say hurry and join your brother, but...
>Fly ahead to scout out the bandit army and their camp, try to figure out why so many of them are well enough to face you.

Intel is invaluable.

>Best to hurry up and join your brother, he probably wants to discuss battle strategy, or maybe he wants you to be present when he meets the enemy commander for negotiations. Have Zahak land so you can dismount.
Oh yes, time to diplomance our enemy into surrender and rob soma of his large scale battle
>>
Oh, by the way. I've decided that Zahak will add 1 MP to whatever unit you're attached to. This will increase as he grows older, and is a trait shared by most dragons of sufficient age and size.

An ancient dragon quite literally requires an army to defeat.

Noice.

Could we illusion Zahak and ourselves up during battle to make ourselves more intimidating?
Would that even provide any bonuses or would it just be wasing vys?

>Best to hurry up and join your brother, he probably wants to discuss battle strategy, or maybe he wants you to be present when he meets the enemy commander for negotiations.

>>42910669
How many MP would the Varistha have been worth? Not his leadership skill, but his actual power as a military unit.
>>
>>42910774
Probably three or four. Maaybe five.

Keep in mind, every MP represents 100 soldiers.
>>
>>42910711
I would imagine that it wouldn't provide bonuses to our large scale combat rating, but would provide a bonus to our rolls for individual action.
>>
>>42910793
What was that teenage dragon we killed worth?
>>
>>42910793
Is Mik worth an MP yet?
>>
>>42910711
It would provide a small bonus, probably something like a +2, to the commander's rolls.

>>
>>42910843
We could probably create a hundred ice golems if we used some vys from our vys storage objects, so I bet we could count as an MP
>>

Mik confirmed for being able to kill 100+ men on his own.

Naah, not yet. Not without preparation.

>>42910868
Papa Dracolich would probably be in the neighborhood of 15-20 MP. A sandworm of average size is 5 MP, with the really large ones getting up to 10 MP and the truly massive ones that you really only find near the center of the Pa'vala might be 15.

Hydras would probably just be 1 MP.

Jesus.
>>
>>42911008
We were right at the edge as of the end of the tattoo event.
>>
>>42910892
No, we just got off an early hit that pretty nicely began to rot its skull before the real fighting started, plus that handy dagger which would be good for taking out single large beasts, not crowds of people.
>>
>>42911026
something that was actively hostile to people got eaten by something that is mostly indifferent to people. I'd say it's a win-win, what with Mik being unable to do shit with it.
>>
>>42911045
The mass combat system doesn't translate in any way, neither directly nor tangentially, to the general combat system. It's entirely different, built from the ground up.
>>
>>42911067
So we handily killed 100+ men.
>>
>>42911074
>Implying the spirit ate the dracolich's heart.

This.

>>
>>42911074
I could very well be wrong, but I think Soma implied that the spirit didn't eat the heart
>>
>>42911080
I get that how the system is. That's the point. The system seems unbalanced. Mik should be worth as much as a 100-men army on a bad day at this point.
>>
ONWARDS TO VICTORY
>>
>>42911110
we could probably kill 100 non-vatis easily though. they can't even overcome invisibility.
>>
>>42911149
He really shouldn't, though.
>>
If we invented the spread meta magic we could easily boost our MP levels by miles.
>>
>>42911149
That's really only if he's focusing on behaving like a massive combatant. With preparation (eg raising a bunch of ice golems or preparing a vys-sword style nuke) Mik can count for 1 or more MP, but if he's just leading an army and supporting where necessary he won't have the same impact that a hundred men would have. On the other hand, his leadership will provide a bonus to rolls, so he will still be contributing to the success of the army significantly. Zahak, on the other hand, is behaving like a military unit, so it makes sense that he counts towards the strength of the army.
>>
>>42911185
Mik can annihilate a 100 normal men without any problem in many different ways.
> invisibility
> ice spears
> flame balls
> invisibity + a spear
> cloak
> shit ton of magical gear he has
> ice golems
> metal skin
> blood freeze
> melt face
> earth golems
> leaping aoe paralysis
and various combinations of these a bunch of other magic shit.
>>
>>42911307
He's not a good as you think
>>
>>42911307
>Mik can annihilate a 100 normal men without any problem
You're a special kind of dumb, aren't you?
>>
we could kill Skull Kid without breaking a sweat. but he's worth several MP- more than Mik ever will be. because he can build himself a gatling gun.

which I think is the point that was being made here.
>>
>>42911340
>>42911348
great argument.
>>
>>42911307
Being able to beat 100 normal men isn't enough to be worth an MP. You have to be as strong as 100 men at once. Sure, Mik could turn invisible and spookily walk through their ranks killing everyone as fast as he could reach them, but the overall impact on their army isn't enough to make him worth an MP. If he was instead a hundred soldiers, those soldiers would be able to fight a hundred other soldiers at the same time.

Consider an army of two hundred soldiers vs. an army of 100 + Mik. The two hundred can use their number advantage to destroy the 100 soldiers before mik can kill all 200, so the 100+mik was on a flank, that flank would lose cohesion and the central army would be at a disadvantage. Mik might be able to kill all of them, but he doesn't have the same impact as a whole army of 100 dudes.
>>
>>42911371
That's a good point.
>>
>>42911365
That that you think Mik could handle a 100 man army by himself speaks a lot about the people in this quest.
>>
>>42911422
He could though. Put him against a hundred normal men and he would be the only one alive in the end. That may not be enough to make him worth an MP, but he would come out on top against a hundred regular soldiers.
>>
>>42911422
Do you honestly think he couldn't handle 100 regular men?
As >>42911371 said he's not an army and won't have the impact of one, but if he were to turn invisible could he not just walk by with impunity and rot people's faces off until everyone was dead?
>>
Woohoo! Shitpost quest!
>>
>>42911468
With how much we usually spend on rolls, the fact that he's what an average fighter, and we can only do one action per turn define alive
>>
Speaking of guns, don't we still have an Uzi? Shit, I could've sworn we had grenades, even.

C'mon, guys. It'll be just like the good old days
>>
>>
>>42911554
From the Pastebin, we have:

>1x Rhynian Officer's Pistol

>2x SMGs [86 shots remaining]
>2x Shotgun [5 shots remaining]
>1x Oversized Handgun [5 shots remaining]

No grenades.
>>
>>42911468
100 conscripted peasants maybe, but with how common magic is and how common enchanted equipment is odds are against us if we're going up against anything more than just peasants
>>
>>42911618
So why not use 'em?
>>
>>42911654
We're saving them for selling.
>>
>>42911541
Seriously? He can turn invisible and kill people with stabbing them with forks and they wouldn't be able to do anything. He can just summon huge ass ice bolts and they cost barely anything for him at this point. Not to mention that he can just freeze huge areas for little vys. Average soldier has armor and weapons, maybe even some enchanted gear depending on the army but they wouldn't have anything to counter the things Mik or any other good vatis can do.
>>
>>42911674
No we aren't. We've had the opportunity to sell them on many occasions. In fact we sold one and kept the rest.
>>
>>42911714
You really think they wouldn't figure out where we are after a while?
>>
>>42911618
>>42911654

I agree. Lets use the SMG on this battle. Let's see 'em dakkas.
>>
>>42911714
And how much of that is dependent on rolls?
>>
Let's take out the SMG and unload on them from Zahak. It's not like we're going to sell it any reasonable time from now.
>>
>>42911728
The only thing we've ever used them for and ever will use them for is selling. Face it, that's all they're good for.
>>
>>42911819
How? Near 100 high velocity rounds will make quick work of leather and even metal armor. Plus that shit'd be cool.
>>
>>42911819
Besides, We're insanely rich. And it's not like thing isn't worth serious coin without bullets, to the right person of course.
>>
>>42911819
they're also good for killing 30 people in armor within a handful of seconds as though they were dressed in paper mache.

I'm not saying I'd vote against it

But I certainly won't vote for it

Zaahir Abdul-Hakim.jpg
1MB, 1100x943px
As much as you'd like to scout out the enemy army to determine why they aren't stewing in their own filth, your brother is the commanding officer here. You should probably obey his orders, at least for the duration of this little battle.

With that in mind you urge Zahak to land. Your draconic son folds his wings against his sides and almost immediately begins to plummet like a stone towards the sands below. As the ground grows closer and closer he spreads his wings, jolting you roughly in the saddle as he levels out his flight path and comes in for a glorified crash landing in the banks of a dune.

Gently easing yourself out of the saddle and trying to shake sand out of the cracks in your armor, you reach across the thin membrane which separates Zahak's mind from your own. {You should really work on your landings, Zahak. If you keep that up you're going to hurt yourself one of these days, and the last thing I want is for you to get hurt.}

Embarrassment colors his response. {I know, but landings are hard! I've been trying to figure out how to slow down when I get close but it really hurts my wings. I think maybe I should try flying more. Maybe If my wings were stronger, it wouldn't hurt so much?}

That would make sense, you suppose. You have to remind yourself he's only a month or two old. A newborn, really. {If it's just a matter of practice, hopefully this trip of ours will provide you all the experience you need. Anyway, I need to go visit my brother, your uncle come to think of it.} You wonder what your brother thinks of having a dragon for a nephew? {I'll be back soon. Get a drink of water if you can.}

(1/3)
>>
Zahak bobs his head, radiating a sense of satisfaction. You're not sure what has him so pleased, but you've little time to dwell on it. Turning sharply you march towards the large, octagonal tent which the soldiers have set up for your brother's use. As you draw close you can already here the sounds of heated discussion, and pushing the tent flap aside you're greeted by a crowd of six men collected around a low wooden table. Whatever they were discussing prior to your arrival, they've since fallen silent.

Woven rugs and pillows have been strewn around the floor of the tent, and a lantern lit to provide better lighting. The sun has long since risen, but the thick canvas walls of the tent block out most of the early morning light. The men gathered around the table are strangers to you, but their stiff posture and gleaming army mark them as military men. Your brother's captains, if you had to guess.

Your brother motions you forward, a portly man in a lamellar coat and a much thinner man in chain scooting out of the way so you'll have a place to sit. Once you've made yourself comfortable your brother speaks. тАЬRight, Mikhael. As we were just discussing we intend to send a scout forward to meet the enemy commander and invite him to the negotiating table. If we can, we'd like him to surrender.тАЭ

One the captains, a man who's groomed his facial hair into a rather spectacular moustache, scoffs loudly before interrupting your brother. тАЬPani's tits, Zaahir! Just attack the bastards! You and I both know that talking with these barbarians will get us nowhere and the men ache to spill blood.тАЭ
(2/3)
>>
>>42911990
No, No. We need to stick a gun akin to the one from a warthog
>>
Your brother shoots the man a glare and the captain in turn dutifully falls silent, but you can tell that the captain's sentiments are shared by many members of your brother's staff. тАЬAs I was saying, Mikhael. I want you to join me fore the negotiations. I feel that you'll serve well as a deterrent, in case the enemy commander attempts anything treacherous. Once the battle starts I'll leave you to your own devices, but I'd ask that you put your mobility to good use in flanking the enemy.тАЭ

>>42912583
You don't really know much about the commander, but he is pretty distinctive and you have seen him in person. Plus, you're really close. So it's not like you're trying to scry hundreds of miles away.

So yes, you could use the Prism to watch him pick his nose and eat it.

You're not quite sure this is a good idea. The enemy commander seemed like a powerful Vatis, based purely upon the brief glimpse you managed to get of the man. Not to mention he's replaced his legs with magical artifacts, and possibly other parts of his body as well. тАЬI don't know, dear brother. Would it not be best to follow the advice of your captains? We have numbers on our side, and a dragon besides. If we launch an attack now, without giving them time to prepare a defense, we could probably conclude the battle quickly.тАЭ

Your brother sighs. тАЬPlease, Mikhael. I've already had this conversation. If we can, I want to try and end this battle before it begins. The second planting season approaches in a month's time and if we take heavy losses here it will cripple the lands surrounding Nazir economically. Not to mention draw the ire of our people. For the exact same reasons you wish to attack without warning, I think we have a real chance of forcing them to capitulate.тАЭ

That's a good point, actually. You hadn't taken into account the cost in manpower that this battle might take. Still, you have your misgivings. тАЬThat may well be, dear brother, but if we give them time now to fortify themselves while we negotiate then we are only assuring ourselves heavier losses if negotiations breakdown. Besides, you have an entire temple's worth of Water Vatis here to treat the wounded. I can guarantee that casualties will be light.тАЭ
(1/2)
>>
You lean forward, lowering your voice for dramatic effect. тАЬIgnoring the strategic benefits for a moment, believe me when I say that I've no wish to stand within a few feet of their commander. He's a powerful Vatis equipped with powerful artifacts, and a cruel bastard besides. You may simply be walking into a trap by agreeing to meet with the man.тАЭ You're not actually sure how cruel or treacherous the enemy commander is. You think it's a safe assumption but you didn't see him mistreating his captives nor hear him discussing anything remarkably inhumane.

Your brother considers your words carefully, and though you get the impression that it pains him to do so he eventually concedes the point with sigh. тАЬFine, Mikhael. Perhaps you're right. I'd forgotten the versatility of Water magic. We'll wait for them to draw closer and then launch the attack without warning.тАЭ

Prism.jpg

You push yourself to your feet, briefly touching two fingers to your forehead and chest. тАЬIf you'll excuse me, I am going to be doing some reconnaissance on the enemy army. I've an artifact in my possession which ought to make this a simple task.тАЭ You switch from addressing the assembly as a whole to speaking directly to your brother. тАЬIs there a tent where I might find some privacy? The process may unnerve some of the soldiers and I wish to keep morale high.тАЭ

That's not really true, but you'd rather not reveal to an entire camp of soldiers that you have the prism in your possession. It was, after all, one of the artifacts in the Varistha's chest. If word gets back to Varistha Riya that you have it, she may cause you undue trouble via the machinations of her husband.

Your brother cocks his head to one side contemplatively, before eventually shrugging his shoulders. тАЬI think most of the other tents have been set up for my captains, but I know that there are several unused tents in the carts. Simply requisition one of those for yourself.тАЭ

You quickly slip out of the tent and make your way towards the supply train, retrieving a folded tent without issue and retreating as far away from the main bulk of the army as you dare. You end up setting your tent on the northern end of the dried riverbed, well away from the bulk of the soldiery. Slipping inside you seal the tent flap as best as you can before digging out the ornate bejeweled stand on which the artifact sits.

You carefully set the stand down in front of you, the hands wrought from bronze which serve as the stand's supports sinking into the soft grains. Carefully wrapping your hands around the crystal pyramid at the top of the artifact you close your eyes and focus your thoughts initially on the strange figure of the enemy commander, wreathed in bronze armor and red robes with glorified silver stilts for legs.

Then a thought occurs. What if he realizes that you're scrying on him? No, no. That simply wouldn't do. Instead you shift your focus to his assistant. The chubby woman in unnecessarily ornate heavy armor. After a minute or so of concentration you feel as though your consciousness is jerked forcefully from your body, and instead of sitting in a tent you find yourself floating over the shoulder of this foreign woman.

The armor she wields today is identical to the armor you last saw her in. She's drinking water from a skin and riding alongside the enemy commander, Damodar if you recall his name correctly, on camels. You seem to have caught them in the midst of a conversation. тАЬ-illness. The Water Vatis cannot alleviate the suffering of so many. We must end this swiftly if we wish to win the day.тАЭ

When the woman you're observing, Madhu you think was her name, speaks she sounds hesitant. тАЬDamodar, let us not forget. The foreigners possess a dragon.тАЭ You want to interrupt her to point out that you do not 'possess' Zahak, but it seems that the prism doesn't allow for communication. A good thing, in all likelihood. тАЬWould it not be best to leave the captives here and retreat? We may always capture more slaves, and if they have no reason to do so I doubt these foreigners will pursue us.тАЭ

The commander doesn't say a word, just digs his heels into the flanks of his camel and rides ahead, towards what appears to be a contingent of heavy infantry. Madhu sighs before spurring on her own camel to follow. You're able to listen in on the orders the commander is giving. тАЬYou men.тАЭ He addresses the spearmen. тАЬTake the archers and slip onto the north bank of the riverbed. I want you to wait until their armies are engaged and then rain death upon our enemies from behind. I'll be trusting you to keep the archers safe from enemy counterattack. Go.тАЭ

The soldiers do not bow, but they do swiftly move to obey. Some of them slip past the banks of the river to hide in the riverbed. Others peel off more slowly, so as not to draw the attention of your brother's forces you bet. All in all, you'd guess that about two hundred or so of his troops are splitting off the main body.

Actually, important question before I leave.

>Have Zahak circle above the battle, attacking when an opportunity presents itself or when you call for his aid.
>Command your forces from Zahak's back.

The first option means he'll have a greater affect on the overall battle but you'll lose out on the +1 MP bonus until you call for his aid, effectively making him sort of a reserve unit.

The second option means you'll get the +1 MP and he'll play a larger role in your personal battles, but he'll have lesser effect on the battle overall.

You drag yourself out of the meditative trance the prism has forced you into. It takes some struggling against your unresponsive limbs, but eventually you're able to free yourself from the artifact's hold. Your eyes snap open and you let your hands fall away from the surface of the crystal, instead reaching out to Fulvia, Mortia, and Chryssa via the brooches. {Round up the Vatis and get to the northern bank of the river, the bandits are sending a force around to ambush our army once the battle starts. We'll ambush them in turn.}

You sever the connection before you get a response and swiftly set about tearing down your tent. You don't want to risk being seen by the enemy, even if they are still an hour or more away. You toss the folded tent into the riverbed just as your men arrive, at least the ones on camels. The sandship riders are having a harder time getting across the ravine.

With your men gathered before you, you quickly explain your plan. тАЬI used an artifact to get a glimpse of what the enemy commander was doing and I overheard him giving orders for a force of spearmen and archers to slip around the northern bank of the riverbed to ambush the army from behind once the battle begins. What I've decided is that we'll in turn hide behind the ridge of a dune-тАЭ You pause for a moment, scanning the sands for a dune of suitable size to hide sixty men, camels, and sandships.

You spot the perfect dune just a few hundred yards to the west. It's a massive, crescent shaped dune with a gently sloping face. You know that on the other side there will be a steep drop. Your people call these moaning dunes, because on a hot day if one slides down the steep face of the dune they'll set off a low, incessant hum that can last for hours, even days in particularly large examples. They're often set off by the winds before a sandstorm, and so can serve as a warning system of sorts.

(1/3)
>>
You point towards your selected pile of sand triumphantly. тАЬWe'll hide behind the ridge of that dune and wait for them to arrive and set their ambush. Then we'll ambush them in turn from behind. The surprise and our magical capability should be more than enough to afford us the advantage despite their superior numbers.тАЭ

Fulvia, riding atop a camel with Mortia's arms clinging desperately to her midriff, bows her head in acknowledgment. тАЬIt is a good plan, if we use our mobility to our advantage we ought to be able to avoid taking any sort of casualties.тАЭ

Chryssa simply adjust her bow where it's strong across her torso. тАЬIt will serve. Should we perhaps prepare traps? We do after all have a number of capable Earth Vatis. We could create a deep pit hidden by a thin layer of stone and sand and drive the enemy into fleeing over it.тАЭ

Fulvia answers before you're able. тАЬWe do not have the numbers for such a plan to succeed. If we were to attempt to drive them away, we would need to engage them fully rather than simply skirmishing. We would certainly lose many in such an engagement.тАЭ

Chryssa ponders this for a moment, before smiling just very slightly. тАЬI suppose you are right, I am not familiar with the practice of fighting mounted.тАЭ

With that apparent controversy resolved you reach out to Zahak, the bond between you and your adoptive son much easier to take advantage of than the channels of communication your brooch creates. {Zahak, join me on the north bank of the river behind the large, crescent shaped dune. We'll be setting an ambush there to surprise a contingent of the enemy's troops.}

(2/3)
>>
You don't get a response so much as a vague sense of agreeableness. Satisfied, you quickly rally your men and lead them west, towards the dune. You go around rather than scaling it, in the hopes of avoiding leaving footprints all over the slope. Zahak joins you only moments later. He's adopted a strange method of walking on sand. Rather than using the claws at the 'elbows' of his wings to walk as he usually does, he flares out his wings and uses the broader edge for additional support.

You haul yourself into the saddle on Zahak's back alongside your men. The camels are obviously nervous, and at first they raise quite the terrified cacophony over being so close to a dragon, but eventually some of the Nature Vatis get them to settle down and all is silent in anticipation.

I'm going to decide that you can spend vys to improve mass combat rolls. However, I'm going to rule that it takes two vys to improve a mass combat roll by 1 and the maximum amount of vys expenditure stays the same. So instead of being able to improve a roll by 15 points, you can only improve it by 7.

Can Zahak manage two people on his back, or is he much too small still? I was thinking we could train Chryssa how to ride him, because if I'm not mistaken Zahak thinks of her as a 'mother' right? And someone as good with a bow as her riding on Zahak could be terrifying.

The waiting is awful. You hear your brother shouting orders and gathering the army, followed shortly by the clinking and clanking of nearly five hundred men gathering up their weapons and forming up in formation. The jangling grows progressively quieter as your brother and his forces grow more distant with every passing moment, marching into battle. You're tempted to peek over the edge of the dune to get a look at the proceedings, but you don't want to risk discovery.

Then a distant shout rings through the air, muted at this distance. You think they've broken into a full charge at the enemy ranks. Some of your men shift uncomfortably in their saddles, and you hear mutterings amongst the men. You can't tell if they're eager or scared, or perhaps some mix of the two. You're jittery, your breath coming short and shallow and your hands squeezing the knob of Zahak's saddle with enough force to turn your knuckles white.

Your stomach is churning, and for a second you think you might revisit your morning meal, but then you hear the jangling of metal growing steadily closer, and hushed by annoyed whispers in an accent you don't recognize. You wait, until the sounds of motion and men fall silent and the only sound in the world is the wind whistling over the top of the dune.

Then you urge Zahak to creep forward. He digs his claws deep into the sands of the dune and pulls himself up, causing a small avalanche behind him as he scurries up the dune. On the other side you're greeted by the sight of what must be nearly two hundred men, each and every one of them with their backs turned towards you. You're not really conscious of it, but the grin you wear is down right predatory. Some little voice in the back of your heard urges you forward, reveling in the promise of bloodshed.

(1/3 or 4)
>>
You men ride around the edge of the dunes, while the sandship riders push their vessels to the top of the dune and climb into the armored compartments inside. With everyone in position you channel vys into your throat to amplify your voice before shouting triumphantly. тАЬInto the jaws of Surya!тАЭ

The cry is taken up by your men even as Zahak bounds forward, his wings snapping out to carry you low across the dunes. You find yourself crashing into the formation of archers, a jet of flame leaping from Zahak's mouth to incinerate the men in front of you. You weren't entirely prepared to be honest, but wielding your Scorpion Shield in one hand and your trident in the other you lash out at the enemies surrounding you, keeping them from Zahak's soft underbelly.

You've taken the enemy completely by surprise, and the addition of your subordinates to the fray quickly turns the melee in your favor. The spearmen are only just beginning to react to your charge when the sands themselves start to suck them below, trying to drown then alive even as bolts of ice fly through the air impaling a dozen men in the opening volley.

You spot Chryssa swinging her mace into the helmet of one of the spearmen as she rides past, the force of the blow pulping the poor bastard's head entirely. Mortia, though she keeps one hand tightly around Fulvia's waist for fear of falling off the camel, cuts a man nearly in half with that bronze sword of hers. He survives, but you suspect he wishes he hadn't. A gut wrenching scream rips from his throat as he collapses. Fulvia, for her part, conjures stone spikes from the sand to impale her enemies.

END THREAD
>>
As spectacular as the violence is, it's the Fire Vatis who steal the show. A swathe of archers turn to ash in an instant under the weight of their pyrotechnic onslaught. The scent of charred flesh and burnt hair rapidly fills the air as more and more of the enemy fall to their attacks.

Then the tides begin to turn. You spot a Water Vatis take an arrow in the throat and slide from the saddle of his camel. An instant later one of your fire Vatis rides full bore into a field of spears and gets impaled for his trouble. The Nature Vatis help you coordinate a hasty withdrawal, but as a parting gift you spread your hands wide and channel Fire Magic. In an instant, a vast swathe of sand has been turned to glass and the men who once stood there reduced to ash.

The crater provides you a avenue of retreat, and you urge Zahak onward. He's slow to respond at first, tossing his neck to one side and sending the headless body of an archer sailing a good twenty feet spinning through the air. A sickening crunch rings out as he crushes the poor man's severed head in his powerful jaws. Only then does he obey your wishes by half-running, half-hopping away from the melee. His spiked tail takes the life of three more skirmishers as he retreats.

The effects your forces have had are devastating. The archers have been reduced to little more than a handful of stragglers and those have folded into the ranks of the spearmen. However, the spearmen have in turn mustered for a counterattack.

>>
>>42917597
While fearsome, dragons are killable, and ours is relatively small. We're also facing experienced soldiers here, not peasants.
>>
>>42917579
They were at 160 troops prior to this (rounding them up to 2 manpower), but I'll say you killed 91 of their number (the vast majority archers and a few spearmen), leaving them at 61 soldiers remaining. You yourself had 63 troops prior to this and didn't lose many. You're at 56 Vatis now.

To be honest, I'm not keeping track of exact troop numbers. The mass combat system relies upon abstraction via manpower.

The masked commander hired these people from all corners of the world. These aren't your average bandits, anon.
>>
As the Earth Vatis withdraw to regroup with the main body of your forces the enemy spearmen charge, freed from the artificial quicksand the Vatis had been using to hold them in place. You see five Fire Vatis split off from the main body of your force and charge the spearwall, hurling fire from their fingertips in the hopes of stalling their advance. Four spearmen fall under their assault but as they turn to rejoin your forces the infantry surge forward. Their spears prove brutally effective against your own men's mounts and once the camel is taken out from under the Vatis it only takes a single blow to end them.

The infantry remain in tight formation as they turn to face your troops, the few remaining archers standing behind their wall of shields and firing whenever the opportunity presents itself. Your Water Vatis throw spears of ice downrange but they simply embed themselves in the spearmen's heavy shields. Six more of your men slip from their saddles or fall from the back of sandships, arrows in their chest.

You try to heal as many as you can, and you manage to save the lives of several but as soon as you devote your attention to one man another's injured. Some of your men try to slip around to attack the remaining archers or hit the spearmen from the side, but every time one of your Vatis breaks formation they go down either shot full of arrows or with a spear through their gut. You could probably turn the tide of battle if you urged Zahak forward, to break their formation, but you don't want to risk your draconic son.

(1/3)
>>
Then you see Chryssa break rank. She spurs her camel forward, pushing herself onto one knee so she's half-standing in the saddle with her bowstring pulled taught and an arrow already nocked. She fires once, twice, three and four times with each arrow landing squarely in the forehead of one of the few remaining archers. As she nears the line of spearmen she slips gracefully out of her saddle and rolls in the sand, popping up underneath the spears of the infantry and grabbing a man by the throat.

You've never seen someone pop a man's head like an overripe melon with their bare hands. You've seen Chrys do it in the past, to animals and monsters, but never to one of your own kind before. The spearmen react in much the same way you do, by recoiling with a mix of fear and disgust. That's exactly the opportunity Chrys was waiting for. She starts laying into them with her mace, each blow caving in the skull or chest of an enemy with magically charged might. Her actions rally your own soldiers, and they let out a deafening war cry before charging the enemy ranks. With Chryssa forming the spearhead your men quickly break the enemy formation.

Unfortunately the melee proves unforgiving. You lose more men in the charge than were picked off beforehand. Still, you need to take back control of your forces. They're fighting with wild abandon but they're unorganized. However, unorganized as they are you notice something gripping the enemy soldiers. Some of them have collapsed, clutching their guts despite not taking any obvious wounds.

Then the smell hits you. Seems Mortia's poison was effective after all.

So why don't we just fly over their army too high for them to retaliate against us with magic or conventional weapons, and just create a bunch of ice spikes above them and let gravity drop the spikes onto them from above. We're even a GM in water, so we should be able to pump out a shit-ton.

With the battle turning in your favor you urge Zahak forward, no longer worried about a spear planting itself in your adoptive son's side. Rather than leap into the air as you were expecting him to, he instead starts channeling vys. Sand starts to flow opposite gravity, pooling in the air around Zahak's head. He snaps his wings taught and the resulting pulse of vys sends a dozen thin stone spears shooting into the ranks of enemy and allied soldiers alike.

It's fortunate then that your son seems to have a high degree of control over his Earth magic, because he doesn't hit a single Vatis. Instead the spearmen drop like flies under his assault. With the space afforded to your men by Zahak's attack you decide now's a good chance to press the attack and amplify your voice over the din of battle. тАЬLeave none alive! Kill them to the last man for the wounds they inflicted upon your compatriots!тАЭ

You think it was probably just the volume at which you shouted your orders that drove your men to fight harder, rather than anything in particular that you said. Flames fan out in a spiraling pattern across the surface of the dune you're fighting on, igniting the clothing of half a dozen enemies even as the vatis who cast the spell takes a spear in the back. Most of your Water Vatis have withdrawn to treat the wounded, but you see a few hurling bolts of ice into the crowd. Unfortunately they lack the control that Zahak has, and just as many of your own fall to their spears as the enemy.

Their indiscretion irks you. As Zahak leaps into the melee, crushing a doubled over spearmen under his weight in the process, you heal those of the dead and dying who belong to your own forces. Most of their wounds are minor, but seeing men who not but a few seconds ago were bleeding out in the sand leaping back into combat warms your heart in an odd way. With Zahak burning and tearing apart his enemies left and right, the battle swiftly turns in your favor.

Void Berserker.jpg

You spot Fulvia open a yawning pit in the sands to swallow whole three spearmen, even as Mortia runs a man through with that sword. Everyone that she seems to stab with that sword seems to scream bloody murder. They never just go down quietly, it always seems impossibly painful. You suppose that's one of the enchantments placed on that blade of hers.

It seems like almost as quickly as it began the battle is over. You find yourself and Zahak in the midst of a field composed solely of the dead and dying, your own men, reduced to perhaps forty or so from their original sixty three, surrounding you on either side. A handful of the spearmen have fled, but each one falls in quick succession to Chryssa's arrows. She's soaked almost from head to toe in gore. It's almost comical, in a grim sort of way.

While there are dozens of wounded to tend to, both on your side and theirs, you ignore them for a moment in favor of creeping over the riverbank to get a glimpse of the main battle between your brother's forces and those of the enemy. You urge Zahak to stand up straighter, and after he does so you balance yourself atop his saddle to get a good view.

Both the left and right flanks of the bandit army have folded, leaving them encircled on three fronts by your brother's forces. Still, they continue to fight on. Then you hear a distant war cry, and a third force joins the field. You can't really see much, but logic tells you it's probably Darzi. Still, you don't remember her having that large a force of infantry under her command, or any infantry at all. Perhaps freed slaves?

Completely encircled, the battle turns into a slaughter. Cheering starts to reach you from the edges of the battle, as men begin picking over the corpses of the dead for loot. All seems to be going well. The battle is won, and with seemingly minimal losses.

>>
>>42918881
Oh no. oh no. not good. not good. I can only say this.
A STORM IS A BREWING. ONE THAT PRECIPITATES TEARS, SALT, AND SHIT.
>>
Then there's a blinding white light. You flinch at the intensity of the flash, toppling forward from Zahak's saddle. You struggle to spit out a mouthful of sand as you wait for your vision to clear, but when it does you almost wish it hadn't.

In the center of melee, where the bulk of the enemy's forces had been concentrated, there's a gaping tear in the fabric of reality. Its edges shift unnaturally, meeting and separating in ways that simply shouldn't be possible. Screams of fear and confusion drift faintly through the air, your brother's armies scrambling to get away from the rip.

A massive horned head forces its way through the tear. The creature which strides out is fifteen feet tall if it's an inch, and pitch black. It's entire head is dominated by a massive set of jaws and two curving horns. It has no eyes, no nose, no obvious method of observing the outside world. Yet it reaches down and plucks up the mauled torso of a soldier with a strange sort of gentleness. It hurls the man into a loose formation of spears before lowering its shoulder and charging.

Worse yet, you see more of them lurking within the tear.

REMEMBER THE VOID CONTINGENCIES.

Void Entities are weak against physical damage to their cores. Void Entities are also weak against possibly, silver weapons. We don't have silver, but we've got Chryssa and her aimbot hacks. We'll need to mount her on Zahak and get her in position to punch those cores in.

Fuck no. We need to be as precise as fucking possible here.

The last thing we *have* to remember going into this fight is that Mik has some sort of "string" magic, that he can "affect change into the world." It might come down to us meditating on the strings and shit of the portal, and closing it with whatever weird metal magic we're on the brink of discovering.

I think we've enough material then, to make a battle plan. Chryssa will have to play interference, targeting the cores of the Void Entities using her mask and all the guns we have available. The battle grounds is in the dunes right? lots of sand and rock right? Get the Earth Vatis to erect Arena walls, get spike barricades, tell them to use earthen/icy spikes to shoot down any airborne void entities. Have troops and friends run interference and target cores. Mik, meditate and slowly close portal, it's going to be similar to meditating on top of the cloak. Name of the game will be a modified version of Tower Defense. we can't afford to let a single Void entity leak into the material world.

>>42919244
Why not just have fulvia open a pit down to the core of the earth underneath the portal where the cunts are coming from?
>>
>>42919244
We've got a margin of error here. Chryssa is an absolute ranged beast, and if she can determine where the cores are, with the improved ballastics of the guns, her deathmask, and her strength, she'll mow them down.
>>
>>42919226
Ahh, the detachment you were fighting. It probably would've been Zahak or Chryssa. Those two had the highest kill count by far.
>>
>>42919161
Unless the death mask can somehow see through the void entities to determine where the cores are, she can't just target them. A void entity's core can be literally anywhere inside it's body, and it changes for entity to entity. The only reason Varvar was good at it was because he was fucking Varvar and used OP Nature hackz. The only other way of going about it is through trial and error.
>>
