Merry Christmas Everybody! Let's make a story together.

Machines or moon?

I'll change vote if you really don't want to

Let's try the Ursine, on a Living Moon or a Tundra.
>>
>>36965697
Machines& kobolds in the sewers of a human metropolis.
We'll have to scavenge while remaining unbeknownst to the humans for fear of war. We could look for an uninhabited building to begin our conquest of the surface.
>>
>>36965720

Machines. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that all machine civs I've done have been pretty bad.
>>
>>36965720
Machines if I had to guess, as they have no personality (by default) and are harder to make interesting on a personal level than other civs. Also, there is currently a machine civ running already.

I think so. OP, are you giving Polar Ursine any differences from others?
>>
>>36965994

(Also pick the leader and race of the Ursine. Leader can be a Shaman or Warrior.)

The Ursine are a powerful race of beastmen that often keep to themselves. Isolated to the frozen wastes of the north most never interact with other races. Interactions with other races have been somewhat tragic. The two other races that the Ursine had ever come in contact with before recent times were the Dwarves and the Humans.

Hiccups in relations such as: attempted subjugations, attempted exterminations, a few wars, and the burning of the northern forests (by the Dwarves) have resulted in unhealthy relations between the Ursine and Humans/Dwarves.

In recent times the expansion of the Dwarves, Orcs, Humans, Skaven, and other races have infringed upon the Ursine borders. One clan, located within one of the few remaining forests of the Northern Wastes is torn between remaining in their home to face foreign incursion or to flee to "safer" pastures to the North.

As of now the clan of 80 (40/40) has seen many refugee tribes fleeing north, they have even offered shelter to many and are always refused. They have yet to see the invaders, but have heard reports of many different races. It seems to be a matter of who reaches them first.

They have the Minotaur's blind rage. The survivability of the cold means they require less food, have a stealth bonus, and they are pretty damn strong because of their size (grizzly stronger still)
Polar with warrior Chief
Totally forgot choose the clan name.

These particular Ursine are a unique breed. They are the polar Ursine. They are the largest of their kind, but their size comes with an untameable anger. While the Ursine may be cool-headed, the heat of battle brings out the bear.

The chieftain of the (Clan name) Clan had always been hospitable to his kind, but relentlessly unforgiving to outsiders. In his old age he has fallen ill and grown week. It is time for his son to take over the clan, but first he must prove he is worthy. His son Lyga must perform one feat to prove his worth. He is given the choice to perform one of the three great feats:

>A: The Feat of sacrifice, Lyga must sacrifice part of him in order to prove he is not afraid of pain. He must survive for seven nights in the wilderness after his sacrifice to prove he can survive when wounded in the wilderness.

>B: The feat of the Hunt: Lyga must hunt a great beast to prove his strength to his people. He must wear his trophy always to show his achievement.

>C: The Feat of the Gods. Lyga is to perform an ancient ritual to contact the gods. One shall manifest and provide for him a test. The test varies on the deity as does the reward. He must carry the reward around him at all times to show his achievement and dedication to his gods and ancestors.

Lyga has chosen to seek the Gods favor. Lyga readies the ritual and goes to tell his father of his plans. Lyga's father had chosen the ritual of the hunt, his prey was an alpha-werewolf who's pack terrorized the forests. The only advice the old chief could give was:

"Seek not a god, but a reward."

Puzzled by this apparent blasphemy Lyga left his father's tent and headed out into the wilderness to preform the ritual. There was an ancient tree to the West that the (Clan name) regarded as holy. This ancient Pine was seen as a bridge between our world and the worlds of the Gods. Lyga builds a small fire and prepares the ritual. First he marks himself with symbols of strength and protection. Then he preforms the calling ritual. He attempts to make cntact with the gods of his people. With his father's words looming on the back of his mind he awaits for contact. The first to contact him was Hiln the god of the hunt, wilderness, and feats of speed or Agility. He offers a Bow endowed with powers and an empowered hide of a beast should he accept his test.

The Second to call upon him is Welfa, the goddess of honored dead, matron of toxic plants and curing plants. She offers a necklace that shall heal Lyga of any toxin and heal his wounds gradually should he accept her test.

The third is Merod the god of combat, dueling, feats of strength, Patron of warriors and children. Merod offers an empowered weapon of his choice should he accept his test. He will also gift Lyga's offspring with luck and srength.

The final deity to contact Lyga was Hush. The god of stealth, murder, Patron of dishonored dead and dark magics. Hush offers Lyga a dark knife and knowledge of dark magics should he accept his test.

Accept the gift of Welfa.

We aim to grow the forest and she seems like a good fit for our goal.

Lyga cautiously accepts the test of Hush. The god appears to Lyga as a rotting corpse of his father.

"My test is not one of merit or ability, but one of time and curiosity. You must answer me three questions and you shal recieve my gifts."

>1: What did your father's words mean?
>2: Why have you chosen me?
>3: Should the time come, will you sacrifice your people to save yourself? and Would you sacrifice yourself to save your clan?
>4: What knowledge of the dark arts do you prefer? (Pick a magic type. Be specific)
>5: When the ice thaws and snow melts. When the trees show thier true colors as will those who follow you. When the time comes to wage wars on your own kind and slay your brothers. Will you pray for me or my brother Meord?
>>
>>36967211
>1: What did your father's words mean?
"Seek not a God but a reward". Seek not recognition, but power, power to defend my people, people to vanquish my enemies.
>2: Why have you chosen me?
You represent the old ways, the old ways are best. The old ways kept us safe. You represent power, and you have the guile I require to survive stronger foes.
>3: Should the time come, will you sacrifice your people to save yourself? and Would you sacrifice yourself to save your clan?
I would give my life willingly to save my clan. I am but a protector. I enter combat to give my life willingly to defend the tribe. I made this choice many seasons ago. It will not change.
>4: What knowledge of the dark arts do you prefer? (Pick a magic type. Be specific)
Curses, diseases, and poison.
>5: When the ice thaws and snow melts. When the trees show thier true colors as will those who follow you. When the time comes to wage wars on your own kind and slay your brothers. Will you pray for me or my brother Meord?
I will worship and pray for you.
>>
>>36967211
1: We don't need to seek the god that we empathize with the most, but the one who will help us do the most good for our people.
2: Because you will help the clan survive through whatever means necessary.
3: I will sacrifice myself to save the clan.
4: I wish to know of the arts of seeing and communication over distance (Scrying and fortunetelling)
5: I will pray to you. One knife in the dark will save the lives of all the ursine that might be killed in a wasteful battle between clans.
>>
>>36967211
1. "To him the blessings of a God are only as valuable as the physical, tangible benefit they grant. Realistic but potentially shortsighted."
2. "As a powerful clan, most of my kind would chose Merod as a Patron. However, our kind has only dwindled more and more under this philosophy. It is time for a radically different approach, and in turn, a new Patron to worship."
3. "Myself for the clan. The clan must continue at all costs."
4. "Necromancy. Control of the Dead. Even in death the clan will continue. No matter the cost."
5. "I will endlessly worship you, the giver and taker of life eternal."
>>
>>36967211

1. I act not for myself, but for my tribe. I should not take the path of the god who I most venerate in my personal life, but the god who will give me the strongest reward. This reward is my power and will defend my people.

2. Power. I know that Welfa offers safety, Merod offers glory, and Hiln offers the honor of the hunt, but you offer true power that I will need to defend my people.

3. I would lay down my life for my people, not as a way to be remembered, but to keep the tribe strong. I would not due this easily, or without hesitation, but if I had to, yes, I would spill my own lifeblood for the tribe to go on and thrive.

4. I seek power over the rites of blood. I want to use this power to destroy my enemies, using the power of their blood and my own. (Combat magic based on blood)

5. I shall offer the prayers of open honor and glory to Merod, for those are his dues. You, however, are to me a quiet god, one who I offer not pomp and ceremony, but respect and offerings. You shall always have your due offerings in times of peace, as those in times of peace fear you, but your people are those fighting for their lives, who need you.

I'm going to pick the answer I like the best on all except for 4. You guys need to vote on what magic he chooses.
>>
>>36967394
I vote Necromancy.
>>
>1: What did your father's words mean?

We worship all the gods, and yet our kinsmen die. What we need now is the means to survive.
>2: Why have you chosen me?

Merod is the God of Combat, but you Hush, you are the God of Murder. We wish the death of our enemies and the survival of our people, not the glory of war.
>3: Should the time come, will you sacrifice your people to save yourself? and Would you sacrifice yourself to save your clan?

Aye, all Ursine eventually die in this frozen tundra. I at least wish to die with the warmth of my kinsmen in my heart. I'll sacrifice myself for my people.
>4: What knowledge of the dark arts do you prefer? (Pick a magic type. Be specific)

Grant me the power to be unseen, God of Stealth. So that I may cut the throat of the Dwarven and Human leaders in their sleep.
>5: When the ice thaws and snow melts. When the trees show their true colors as will those who follow you. When the time comes to wage wars on your own kind and slay your brothers. Will you pray for me or my brother Meord?

If by your blessing, we survive the scourge of our foe to turn on our own, I'll be grateful for it. If we survive, I'll stand by the Patron God of the Frostforged, Hush.
>>
>>36967394
So we have proposals for
Blood Magic (or correct me?)
Necromancy
Subtle arts (curses, diseases, poison)
And >>36967424 is Illusion I think?
>>
>>36967394
Okay, so the options are:
-Curses, diseases, and poison (seems really general)
-Scrying and fortunetelling
-Necromancy
-Invisibility
-Blood Magic (to clarify, powerful magic powered by either hurting your opponent in melee combat or hurting yourself at least a bit)

Honestly, I think scrying seems more useful than it is, as we don't really have any interests outside of our territory as of now, and we are heavily territorial. I prefer blood magic, but that's just my proposal, so take that with a grain of salt.
>>
>>36967432
I think that >>36967424
may be more in the line of invisibility or something, but otherwise that seems correct
>>
>>36967440
By the way, I picked blood magic because I think it pairs well with Rage conceptually, not just because edginess, just to clarify
>>
>>36967432
And my proposal for scrying/fortunetelling/communication and other types of information gathering magic
>>
>>36967460
Yeah I noticed that in >>36967440
I don't know how I missed that.
>>
>>36967457
What kind of blood magic? Like using our own shed blood for combat?
>>
>>36967468
either your own or essentially aiding you in melee combat where you are spilling someone else's blood. I'm imagining floating blades made of someone's own blood attacking them as you fight. I just think this could make for a cool warrior-priest aesthetic.
>>
>>36967468
Strikes me similar to Stronghold magic in heroes 5. Units in combat howl, take damage, and do damage to gain rage points. They spend these rage points on buffs and new abilities. Warcries as well from the hero for army-wide bonuses.
>>
>>36967417
The logic behind Necromancy is thus:
Ursines are physically powerful but we seem to start off in low numbers, a natural counter to this. By Invoking Necromancy on our fallen warriors, we offset part of the natural weakness inherent in the undead (weakness) since they are Ursine undead. In addition, one Undead Ursine would be worth far more than one Undead human, so the benefits of this magic are magnified for us.

In addition, we could use the magic on the troops we conquer, and reserve our living Ursine warriors as our shock troops while using the dead of the foes we've conquered as our cannon fodder and front skirmishers.

Lastly, by having a necromantic focus - we may be able to form allies with potential Undead or Vampires that we encounter, an invaluable tool when we branch out of our territory.
>>
>>36967501
Yes. Essentially, it's a battlefield magic that can be enhanced with self-harm.
>>
>>36967499
I think there might be issues that arise with the rage actually hindering the blood magic though. Rage is treated as a negative, so I would assume we lose control during it, correct? In that case, the time we would most want to use blood magic (when injured and bleeding severely) we might rage instead and the option would be unavailable.

While it seems aesthetically like a nice idea, it just seems like it could backfire and give us no benefit since we are too busy in a mindless rage to fiddle with magic. Out of that that I do like the idea though.
>>
>>36967502
Sounds interesting but I was wondering if it was infringing too much on the undead civ in the game.

I suggested the subtle arts to wash our weapons with poison, pollute our enemies' water sources with diseases, and protect our borders with curse sigils.
>>
>>36967524
>>36967502

The neromantic abilities would at first be very limited, but it could potentially turn into an undead civ if necromancy is chosen. Just remember that what ever magic we use will be observed by our enemies. This can strike fear into their hearts or inspire new enemies to exterminate us
>>
>>36967502
Yeah I get it but Necromancy doesn't seem to sit well with ursine culture.
>>36967394
If no one else is into scrying etc my choices go

Invisibility>Blood>Curses>necro
>>
>>36967499
I like the idea of imbuing the blood into our fur, turning it red and raising our defense. Especially since we are so enraged we can't retreat.

Change my vote from Invisibility to this.
>>
>>36967514
It can work nicely if OP groups all units of the same type as a stack. As it loses units or kills units it gains rage points to spend on buffs (25% resistance to arrows, faster movement to close in, bonus to melee damage, more HP, attack twice per turn, etc). When our hero does or takes enough damage he can call out a warcry for army wide passive bonuses.

I can go behind this.
>>
>>36967522
The idea was more rage letting you carry through despite injury sustained due to blood magic, and blood magic would be usable during rage, as it's a very visceral and fundamental magic compared to something more complex like scrying.

>>36967524
I still think "subtle arts" is very vague and may be nixed by the Civ/made to be narrowed down.
>>
>>36967564
>I still think "subtle arts" is very vague and may be nixed by the Civ/made to be narrowed down.
Perhaps. It was a general idea since they all go in the same direction. Still, I think I'll switch to blood magic
>>
>>36967540
how exactly would the rage/blood magic work mechanically?

I don't see how it works without the rage interfering.

This, Thanks for making my Christmas at work more enjoyable guys. Great thread so far.

I just think Necromancy seems like a bad choice. We wandered out into the forest to become a leader of a very warrior/tribal society. What are our people going to think if we come back and say "Hey we chose the god that's about murder and dishonored dead, oh and we're working on making zombies". We already picked hush, let's at least make a choice our clan would respect.

I don't think the warrior/shaman Ursine culture would respect us much. Being a leader usually goes a lot better if your people feel like you embody their values.

And the rage/blood magic interference is more on the mechanics side of things which is for OP to work out.

2: Because you will help the clan survive through whatever means necessary.

3.Aye, all Ursine eventually die in this frozen tundra. I at least wish to die with the warmth of my kinsmen in my heart. I'll sacrifice myself for my people.

4. I seek power over the rites of blood. I want to use this power to destroy my enemies, using the power of their blood and my own.

The God of Murder holds out his hand and a dagger of black metal rises from his flesh.

"I have but one final question for you, Lyga. There will come a time when you see me again. It may be whn you dwell in my abyss or when I carry you to the paradise of my Mother's plane. It may be when you summon me or when others call upon me to end you. But when we meet again; will you embrace me?"

Lyga takes the dagger and Hush disappears before Lyga can answer. The fire dies and Lyga falls into a slumber. In his dream he is a Great bear tearing through the battlefield. The bear charges at another Ursine, but stops and grows calm. A creatue charges the Ursine, but the bear lets out a furious roar nad the creature explodes in a mess of blood. The sky is crimson red, but the moon is blue. Lyga awakens to find the sun has risen. he returns to his clan encampment to find his father has passed. He rises his black blade and the clan kneels.

The clan celebrates their new chief's feat. The following day hunters spot another tribe in Frostforged territory. Lyga takes a few soldiers and goes out to meet them. They are a group of 15 Polar reffugees (5/10 m/f) An older Ursine leads them. As they approach the older Ursine sees the Black Blade.
"Ahh so you are the new chief of the Frostforged. We are the Whiteclaw. We have neighbored your clan for centuries." the old bear says lost in memory

"Yes, my father has spoken much about our clans and how they fought the weres." Lyga replies

"Yes, but a new threat has reared its head against us. Green warriors of the south has raided our lands and pillaged our homes. We are whats left of our clan and are fleeing north to seek asylum. You should do the same"

Agreed.

Offer asylum

Ask them for as much info as we can get about the raiders.
>>
>>36967785
yup.
>>
>>36967773
We offer you asylum. The Frostforged stand resolute in the face of invaders, as we have for centuries. Hush, God of Murder has given us his blessing and in time, we will give the greenones his wrath.

Also what might we know about the settlement? They have neighbored us so we should have a rough idea of their size. If they were hit fast with raiders there may be some goods or supplies left behind the raiders didn't toss.

Either way it might not hurt to send out a scouting party once we find out more about the raiders.

Lyga offers the refugees asylum, but like the others they refuse. Lyga accepts their decision, but asks about the raiders.

"They were great in numbers, but were undisciplined. They are smaller than us, but they use armor and ride great wolves. Our village was attacked by at least a hundred of them, but I know not how many survived or remain in the shadows."

The old bear leads his group north and out of Frostforged territory.

The White-claw were a band of villages who would rise up and face a threat. While 200-300 in number their numbers are scattered over at least 4 villages.

Also notes on our settlement. The Frostforged are one large village that have a wooden wall with gates. The males are divided between hunters and warriors. Hunters are also ranged fighters. We have 40 males= 30/10 warrior/hunter.

The news of the "Green-Raiders" is troubling.

Research blood magic. Also could we have a map next thread?

Ah, two options, and investigate towards the refugees' old village. Should be careful but perhaps there's something left to loot if the greenskins already left.

What do we have tech-wise? Mining? Blacksmithing? I'd suggest building a forge if we can make one and don't have one, and researching things if we don't have basic metalworking.

Investigate the raided settlement cautiously if possible

Let's work on building some rudimentary defenses, maybe some spikes for the gate so no one can waltz up and ram them open at their leisure.

Maybe detail some warriors and hunters to scout the borders of our territory and see if there's anything of note changing in our woods.

Hero: Research blood magic.

Yeah let's send a scouting party. Maybe they can snag a greenskin body so we can learn what we're up against.

(And so Lyga can see how their blood reacts to his magic)

Lyga sends a group of 5 hunters and 5 warriors to investigate the Whiteclaw's old territory. As they leave Lyga begins to attempt to comprehend his newly given powers. He cuts his hand with the black blade and somewhat instinctively pulls the blade back. As he moves his blade back he see the blood following the blade. He then begins to play with the gravity-defying liquid by making it change shapes. He then realises he can change the temperature of the blood as well, accidentally raising the temperature of his blood to a burning level. He forces the blood back into his body and binds the wound. He will have to be more careful with later research.

The scouts reach the border of the Whiteclaw's territory and they see smoke in the distance. They cautiously approach what seems to be the remains of a Whiteclaw village. Bodies of Ursine and gren-skin litter the scorched village. Circling the bonfire are pikes with the heads of Ursine mounted on them. The scouts look for any weapons or anything else of value, but find nothing. They take a Greenskin corpse and make their way back to the village.

They return with the frozen corpse of the greenskin and report about their kinds desecration.

I'm going to bed, but as it is Christmas I have fuck all to do tomorrow, so I will be doing this all day. If this thread Archives I'll start another one. Trust me I have plans.
