>Right-click video & select MEDIAINFO to see detailed properties. Take note of BITRATE & FRAMERATE.

>Launch HANDBRAKE & open the video as your SOURCE file
>Choose a DESTINATION & FILENAME for the finished product
>PICTURE TAB - SIZE - Set WIDTH to 2880 for GEAR & 1920 for MOBILE
>For VERTICALLY STACKED videos (ex. HoloGirls), set WIDTH to 2560 for GEAR (2160 for NOTE 4) & 1080 for MOBILE
>CROPPING - Select CUSTOM & set all four values to 0
>VIDEO TAB - VIDEO - Choose CONSTANT FRAMERATE
>For GEAR: Set FPS to SAME AS SOURCE (50 for NOTE 4 if source is higher)
>For MOBILE: Set FPS to 50 unless source FPS is lower (ex. some WankzVR are 30), then choose SAME AS SOURCE
>Older phones may need this always set to 30 FPS
>QUALITY - Select AVG BITRATE & use 20000 for GEAR & 15000 for MOBILE
>If source bitrate is below 15k (ex. NA & HG), then keep it the same
>Older phones may need to set this as low as 8000
>Check 2-PASS ENCODING if you want higher quality & don't mind waiting twice as long
>Click START.

The newly converted video should now play on your device

NOTE: Videos in the newer h.265 format that will not play correctly can be converted to h.264 with Handbrake. h.264 will be selected as the default encoding option when you open the application.

Question about pixels

I'm used to encoding videos to 2880x1440p, but when I entered in 3200x1600p, the best option I was given was 2560x1280p.

1. Will I notice a difference between 1280p and 1440p?

Why is NA so god damn terrible at tuning scale? Every single sample video of theirs is wildly inaccurate with 10 ft tall women sucking zoomed in dick. That some people don't seem to mind it makes me think that scaling is different on different devices. I'm using gearvr and I can't stand any of their videos.

Wankzvr on the other hand is so much better than everyone else in terms of scale. It's too bad most of their videos are capped at 30fps.

I've tried my fair share of viewers, all the way from $2 shit to the CV1 and Vive. My professional opinion is that any VR system below the GearVR isn't worth it. It's the golden standard for now. It might change with Daydream at the end of the year... But if you don't mind a Samsung phone, it's the way to go right now.

Yes, I played them on my GearVR for awhile until NA Gear guy came along using the _squished tag to correct for the distortion. It does indeed play acceptably but IMO the Gear-specific versions look better.

Actually, I've had a task in the queue running all day today. I just checked and the CPU is running at only 45%. Furthermore, Handbrake is using only 0.2 to 0.4% (46 MB). Googling for an answer isn't getting me very far.

i5 should do it in about 3 hrs pending on quality. You can likley get under an hour using quick silver. I was going to write a guide but, been working too much. Anyway enabled the internal GPU in your bios. i5 and i7 have a intel gfx in them. Even if you dont have a 2nd monitor you can enable dual monitor in bios and run it. Make sure it in on in your disply settings. When rendering instead of h.264 use h.264( QSV) It will use gpu rendering and it is faster. Some ppl in forums say the quility is not as good, I have not seen it

Thanks Zanalan! Indeed, my i5 has the integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU. I'm already seeing H.264 (Intel QSV) as an available Video Codec option available in Handbrake, so I think that it may already be turned on. However, I followed the referenced YouTube video for all of its steps, including creating the dummy second display, except for double-checking my graphics settings in the BIOS. I've had a Handbrake job running for 3.5 hours now and I'm reluctant to stop it just to start over. I'll check my BIOS settings before I start the next recode, and will report back with the results.

Also, I'm not already familiar with this quick silver encoder you speak of, but I'd sure love to see that guide if you get a chance to write one!

Just install the Hola VPN app on your phone. Then open it, choosing USA as your location, and launch the Oculus app from it. You can then install MilkVR. I made a little program to help people who use EMBY to stream to their GearVR.

I wrote it in live code. It is a really simple program. Input the url of your server (like "http://localhost:8096" or http://192.168.1.1:8096") and user name from emby. The user name can be found by clicking the little man on the top right corner of the web interface. The url witll say something like userId=1234a456sd654f68gf65
select the alpha-numeric stuff after the userID=.

Once that is done, select the "Retrieve JSON from server" button. it is in the middle below the large table. If it works you should have populated the above table with file id's on the left and file names on the right.

Finally, hit the Generate MVRL Files button. it will pop up a dialog so you can select a folder to save your MVRL's to. select it and then a message box will pop up when it has finished.

The config file that stores the user id and url will auto update if you make changes to either field.

Feel free to distribute it far ans wide. Hopefully it helps somebody.

Nginx can be challenging on desktop. If you have IIS running it wont go or even skype wont let it go. Worst part is theres no error right away, you gotta check the log files. I have Nginx working well, and just tried that Emby for fun. I actually kinda like it better. And I think it's actually transcoding, which is good and bad. Bad cuz quality is redused, good cuz its not making the gear VR heat up as much. I just need to get me some desktop VR quick! lol

Oh meant to ask, anyone here use OSVR with any of this? It comes in 2nd to Vive and Occulas from the looks, but man.. saving $300 would be nice. More importantly how bad are the wires :P

Checked their oculus and smartphone sample and both are 30fps with doubled frames. Doesn't bother me a ton cause i would just cut it in half and then use interpolation to create 60fps but if that is how the actual full movies are that kinda crappy and misleading and proves further these companies do not know a damn thing about video encoding.

For me, all but the later HG videos that are encoded in H.265 play just fine without needing to re-encode them (although you'll get a smaller file size and less device overheating if you Handbrake them to Gear VR specs as indicated at the top of this thread).

My answer depends on what you mean by "won't play." If you're not seeing the videos in MilkVR at all, make sure that they're in a folder "MilkVR" in the root of either your phone's internal storage or external SD card. I can't think of any other reason that they wouldn't play at all.

If by "won't play" you mean that you're not seeing the image correctly, it's an issue of choosing the correct file type. Here you have two choices:
a) Scroll through the available file types in the menu within each video within MilkVR. One hitch that I've found is if it's a 3dh or 180x180_3dh video (see what this means in b, below), you have to select the proper file type and then the video will be black; all you'll hear is audio. Then exit the video and restart it, and you'll see it just fine. Or...
b) The better option is to ensure that the correct file type is included in the file name. You can find a list of file types and their appropriate naming conventions at https://samsungmilkvr.com/portal/content/faq#video-types.

Ignore that prompt. Phones always say that when you move videos over. Appending the filenames with the proper tag should work, but if not you may need to convert them down to 50 fps.

This may help I found out that sometimes when running an oculus resolution on the gear vr the video will play for a few seconds and then freeze a fix I've found for this if you want the higher resolution make sure the file is running at 30fps not 50 or 60 seemed to fix the issue for me although that may require you re-encoding file
