>CARDBOARD/SMARTPHONE/MOBILE (non-Gear VR smartphones)

Higher quality files (OCULUS) are preferred as they can be converted down.

TO CONVERT OCULUS VIDEOS FOR GEAR/CARDBOARD/MOBILE:

>Download & install these two applications:
Handbrake: https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
MediaInfo: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

>Right-click video & select MEDIAINFO to see detailed properties
>Take note of BITRATE & FRAMERATE and also if framerate is CONSTANT or VARIABLE

>Launch HANDBRAKE & open the video as your SOURCE file
>Choose a DESTINATION & FILENAME for the finished product
>PICTURE TAB - SIZE - Set WIDTH to 2880 for GEAR & 1920 for MOBILE
>For VERTICALLY STACKED videos (ex. HoloGirls), set WIDTH to 2560 for GEAR & 1080 for MOBILE
>CROPPING - Select CUSTOM & set all four values to 0
>VIDEO TAB - VIDEO - Choose CONSTANT or VARIABLE framerate (keep same as source file)
>For GEAR: Set FPS to SAME AS SOURCE
>For MOBILE: Set FPS to 50 unless source FPS is lower (ex. WankzVR are 30), then choose SAME AS SOURCE
>Older phones may need this always set to 30 FPS
>QUALITY - Select AVG BITRATE & use 20000 for GEAR & 15000 for MOBILE
>If source video already has a low bitrate (ex. NA & HG are 8-15k), then add 1000 to that value (ex. 13k if source was 12k)
>Older phones may need to set this as low as 8000
>Check 2-PASS ENCODING if you want higher quality & don't mind waiting twice as long
>Click START.

The newly converted video should now play on your device

For GEAR VR, use Milk VR app. There are different projection settings that work best with each studio's content. These can be changed via an in-app button or (more reliably) by appending tags to the filename. More info can be found here: https://milkvr.com/portal/content/faq

Will the 6GB version look better (with 50fps) on my 1440p phone than the 3GB (50fps) version? Both in 4K (as my phone can run a 4K video as high as 50fps... sometimes 30, depending on random reasons defined by magic).

2560x1440 is the same as GearVR resolution (which is Quad HD not 4k btw), and it can play the 3200x1600 videos (as well as 2880x1440 which I assume yours can as well if that's what you mean by 1440p for this video). The answer is yes it will look better even Handbraked to 2880x1440 @ 50 FPS but the reason will be the bitrate, which is 30k as opposed to the 15k of the GearVR version we already had.

On GearVR however, I have found that regardless of the resolution (3200x1600 vs 2880x1440, both at 60 FPS), 30k bitrate (Oculus) videos make my S6 overheat after about 20 minutes, so when necessary I drop them to 20k which is stable. I won't bother with this one though since we already have a 15k GearVR version.

But even if yours can also only run 20k bitrate stable, the Handbraked 2880x1440 / 50FPS / 20k bitrate version will look better than the 2880x1440 / 50 FPS / 15k version, which is the best you could have gotten for your phone from the GearVR version.

No, you can't display any resolution higher than your screen can support, your phone will down-sample it on-the-fly (assuming it is capable) during playback. It may look slightly better but not nearly as much as a higher bitrate at your phone's native resolution would.

Higher fps rates (60fps for e.g.) provide a smooth viewing experience compared to commonly used rates such as 24fps, where fast motion appears to be stuttering. High fps rates also translate to higher video quality as everything appears smoother and is pleasant to view. However, the more frames there are in a video, the larger the file size has to be in order to accommodate the frames. This is the reason 60fps is not as common as 24fps, as it increases file size significantly.

Actually, it's you who doesn't understand.

The bitrate defines the amount of data processed per second, therefore also defining the total file size when multiplied by the duration. For instance, a bitrate of 20Mbps for a 1 minute video will be 20*60 = 1200Mb, or 1200/8 = 150MB (8 bits in a byte).

Yes, the frame rate and resolution have an effect on filesize, but in this case the bitrate is already being selected in handbrake. So encoding to 30fps at 10Mbps will allow more quality to be preserved in each frame than encoding to 50fps at 10Mbps, but ultimately the total file sizes will be the same due to equal bitrates. Obviously, the 50fps file will appear smoother, but at reduced image quality.

if you have 2 videos an 1 is 30 and the other 60 so have the same picturequality you have to have about double the size. if you tell the encoder to not give a fuck and run as 10MB/s you will get about the same size fro each video. If you do that the encoder can spend more MB/Frame if he has to encode 30fps because he has less frames to divide the MB/s. how it looks is dependend on the picture you have to encode.

if you encode an anime with a fixed MB/s value you are dumb because there is so much variance and many stills/szenes with little motion so the h.264 codec can do his magic.

Even though I don't own any subscription to share videos with you guys, I wanted to contribute something. I know, it's not a big deal but maybe it could come handy to someone.
I created some custom profiles for Handbrake and wanted to share them with you.

Just copy the file to:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\HandBrake

The profiles are self explaining since I named them with the parameters used. I applied the recommendations from OP's post.
The particular <MaxWidth></MaxWidth> parameter is set and will be applied, once you load the source file. The Width inbox will be empty on program startup but since the MaxWidth is set in every profile, it's safe to use.

If you did then you use it to see what framerate the source file is. If for example it's a variable framerate of 60, then for mobile choose variable framerate & 50 from drop-down menu. If it's a constant framerate of 30, then choose constant and leave the drop-down menu on same as source.

In other words, for mobile lower it to 50 unless the file you're converting already has a lower framerate (like 30), in that case just leave it on same as source.

I tried playing it in a different player, something called liveviewrift. in the preview it looks like it's correct, so I think it's just whirligig. Unfortunately liveview has no direct to rift executable so I'm fugged unless I update my oculus firmware to 1.3.0 and i don;t wanna because it's gonna be a pain in the ass. I will have to unplug everything, and I mean everything except mouse and keyboard, then look for and uninstall the old runtime environment and then figure out how to install the new Oculus experience with that worthless store, and it will probably still not work after I do that because I have a DK2. :p

On the other hand, if a video = 2160x2160 over under and i would convert it to side by side.
the top and bottom images will only have as much pixels as 480 as you said (height). Since 1080 = unconverted for the top and bottom half.

Getting a higher resolution than 1920x480 height wise will not be possible without distorting and losing height quality overall.

So yeah, my conclusion is that side by side is the best way to go in any circumstances for the best quality with wide screen screens.

HG compared to Afesta is just bollox. Afesta is watchable in 1080x1080, while HG is not. Havent found a fix yet.

Personally I would prefer side by side for all originals. But that's just in my case of a 1920x1080 smartphone :).

I do have to say though, that some videos out there are stunning for image quality which i never would have imagined for 1920x1080 max resolution on my phone.

For transcoding HG, I think the best bet is to crop half the resolution from each side, because it's just blurred scenery anyway, then use 180 dome projection instead of 360 sphere.

So from the 3840x3840 source, you crop down to 1920x3840.
Then that could be more sensibly converted into a side-by-side encoding at 7680x1920, then aspect resized down to a resolution that best suits your display.

If your phone is 1080p, you'd want to go down to 2160x1080 (after cropping to 180deg and converting from over/under to side-by-side).

I haven't tried watching them at that low a resolution, but it's easy to see how you would be right. HG uses 220 degree FOV but the extra 40 degrees is just useless blur. So when you're converting both the JAV & HG vids to 1080x1080 you end up with much more useful picture with the JAVs then you do with the HGs.

Cropping half the width (25% from each side) would be too much, the video would be stretched out horizontally after converting to 180 degree sbs. You'd need to take off 40 degrees (about 349 pixels from each side). You can actually do that in Handbrake, the problem is the conversion process with ffmpeg as we currently have instructions for it.

The formula for the height of the final video is defined as (OUTPUT_W / DOUBLE_WIDTH) * HEIGHT. You can follow along with the instructions in this picture to see how much of a problem that ends up being for the final height of the converted video.

no they're the HG video's (side by side). when i use my gear vr the left image is slightly lower than the right image. if i angle my phone the images line up. its really strange

If you use opengl you use the quick silver feature that uses the onboard GPU . It is faster but only a max of 5% and the quality is a bit lower. Heard of people getting cuda to work, I have been unsuccessful. Still looking for a alt. program with cuda, it would drop my 25 min to 5 to 10 mins with a 980 ti. If it was a non crop conversion, this could be done in 5 mins easy on other programs.

Does anyone else have playback issues with some of the meds? I've downloaded 43Lexapro and 45Zoloft a few times and tried them on different phones and microSD cards, but the video keeps freezing up after 1 sec of playback and it stays this choppy.

In fact they did not. You cited 43 & 45 as examples. Starting at 39 and including 43, 45, 46, and 49, they started experimenting with 3840x1920 while still at 30k bitrate for their Oculus files. I assume they will soon all be that way. Before that both GearVR & Oculus ones were 2880x1440 with the only difference being the bitrate.

So while I should have also told you to lower the resolution to 2880x1440, I promise you I'm right about you needing to Handbrake them so they'll work on your phone.

So we need everyone here to downvote both the thread and the comment made by PornulusRift in it. Please don't make any comments of your own in that thread, as it will only give it more attention. The idea is to make it disappear (If you don't know, that's how reddit works. Posts and comments with a lot of upvotes rise to the top, while ones with a lot of downvotes sink to the bottom where no one will see them).
