>Friedrich Nietzsche - Beyond Good and Evil

LibriVox did this one

>First published in 1886 at Nietzsche’s own expense, the book was not initially considered important. In it, Nietzsche denounced what he considered to be the moral vacuity of 19th century thinkers. He attacked philosophers for what he considered to be their lack of critical sense and their blind acceptance of Christian premises in their considerations of morality and values. Beyond Good and Evil is a comprehensive overview of Nietzsche’s mature philosophy. (Summary from Wikipedia)

> Andrzej Sapkowski - The Blood of Elves

>For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans . . .

>Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting. Ciri, the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra, has strange powers and a stranger destiny, for prophecy names her the Flame, one with the power to change the world - for good, or for evil . . .

>Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, has taken Ciri to the relative safety of the Witchers' Settlement, but it soon becomes clear that Ciri isn't like the other witchers. As the political situation grows ever dimmer and the threat of war hangs almost palpably over the land, Geralt searches for someone to train Ciri's unique powers. But someone else has an eye on the young girl, someone who understand exactly what the prophecy means - and exactly what Ciri's power can do.

>This time Geralt may have met his match.

>J.R.R. Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings(unabridged)

>J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a genuine masterpiece. The most widely read and influential fantasy epic of all time, it is also quite simply one of the most memorable and beloved tales ever told. Originally published in 1954, The Lord of the Rings set the framework upon which all epic/quest fantasy since has been built. Through the urgings of the enigmatic wizard Gandalf, young hobbit Frodo Baggins embarks on an urgent, incredibly treacherous journey to destroy the One Ring. This ring -- created and then lost by the Dark Lord, Sauron, centuries earlier -- is a weapon of evil, one that Sauron desperately wants returned to him. With the power of the ring once again his own, the Dark Lord will unleash his wrath upon all of Middle-earth. The only way to prevent this horrible fate from becoming reality is to return the Ring to Mordor, the only place it can be destroyed. Unfortunately for our heroes, Mordor is also Sauron's lair. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is essential reading not only for fans of fantasy but for lovers of classic literature as well.

>Richard Feynman - Surely Youre Jokeing Mr. Feynman

>"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!": Adventures of a Curious Character is an edited collection of reminiscences by the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. The book, released in 1985, covers a variety of instances in Feynman's life. Some are lighthearted in tone, such as his fascination with safe-cracking, fondness for topless bars, and ventures into art and samba music. Others cover more serious material, including his work on the Manhattan Project (during which his first wife Arline Greenbaum died of tuberculosis) and his critique of the science education system in Brazil.

>The anecdotes were edited from taped conversations that Feynman had with his close friend and drumming partner Ralph Leighton. Its surprise success led to a sequel entitled What Do You Care What Other People Think?, also taken from Leighton's taped conversations. Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! sold more than 500,000 copies.[citation needed]

>The title derives from a woman's response at Princeton University when, after she asked the newly-arrived Feynman if he wanted cream or lemon in his tea, he requested both (not knowing that they would curdle).

>Ian Doescher - William Shakespeare's Star Wars

>Return once more to a galaxy far, far away with this sublime retelling of George Lucas's epic Star Wars in the style of the immortal Bard of Avon. The saga of a wise (Jedi) knight and an evil (Sith) lord, of a beautiful princess held captive and a young hero coming of age, Star Wars abounds with all the valor and villainy of Shakespeare's greatest plays. 'Tis a tale told by fretful droids, full of faithful Wookiees and fearsome Stormtroopers, signifying...pretty much everything.

>Oscar Wilde - The Picture of Dorian Grey

> In this celebrated work, his only novel, Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind...

>William L. Shirer - The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

>Listening Length: 57 hours and 13 minutes

>Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer's monumental study of Hitler's German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century's blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

>Now, many years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions and way of life were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer's description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.

>Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records, meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his six-year quest to dominate the world, only to see Germany go down in flames.

>Miyamoto Musashi - The Book of Five Rings

>The Book of Five Rings is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for anyone who wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction.

>The Book of Five Rings was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary's translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates here another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

>Bertrand Russell - ABC's of Relativity

>Ask a dozen people to name a genius and the odds are that 'Einstein' will spring to their lips. Ask them the meaning of 'relativity' and few of them will be able to tell you what it is.

>The basic principles of relativity have not changed since Russell first published his lucid guide for the general reader. The ABC of Relativity is Bertrand Russell's most brilliant work of scientific popularisation. With marvellous lucidity he steers the reader who has no knowledge of maths or physics through the subtleties of Einstein's thinking. In easy, assimilable steps, he explains the theories of special and general relativity and describes their practical application to, amongst much else, discoveries about gravitation and the invention of the hydrogen bomb.

>Nicholas Carr - The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains
>Our brains, the historical and scientific evidence reveals, change in response to our experiences. The technologies we use to find, store, and share information can literally reroute our neural pathways.

>Building on the insights of thinkers from Plato to McLuhan, Carr makes a convincing case that every information technology carries an intellectual ethicΓÇöa set of assumptions about the nature of knowledge and intelligence.

>He explains how the printed book served to focus our attention, promoting deep and creative thought. In stark contrast, the Internet encourages the rapid, distracted sampling of small bits of information from many sources.

>Its ethic is that of the industrialist, an ethic of speed and efficiency, of optimized production and consumptionΓÇöand now the Net is remaking us in its own image. We are becoming ever more adept at scanning and skimming,

>but what we are losing is our capacity for concentration, contemplation, and reflection. Part intellectual history, part popular science, and part cultural criticism,

>The Shallows sparkles with memorable vignettesΓÇöFriedrich Nietzsche wrestling with a typewriter, Sigmund Freud dissecting the brains of sea creatures, Nathaniel Hawthorne contemplating the thunderous approach of a steam locomotiveΓÇöeven as it plumbs profound questions about the state of our modern psyche. This is a book that will forever alter the way we think about media and our minds.

Peter Clines - The Fold
>Science Fiction, Mystery

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23164927-the-fold

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn’t much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he’s content with his quiet and peaceful existence.

That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve: far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to “fold” dimensions, it shrinks distances so that a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step.

The invention promises to make mankind’s dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the Door is completely safe.

Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isn’t quite what it seems—and that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret.

As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear there’s only one answer that makes sense. And if he’s right, it may only be a matter of time before the project destroys…everything.

A cunningly inventive mystery featuring a hero worthy of Sherlock Holmes and a terrifying final twist you’ll never see coming, The Fold is that rarest of things: a genuinely page-turning science-fiction thriller. Step inside its pages and learn why author Peter Clines has already won legions of loyal fans.

>Plato - The Republic

>What is at stake is far from insignificant: it is how one should live one's life. Plato's The Republic is widely acknowledged as the cornerstone of Western philosophy. Presented in the form of a dialogue between Socrates and three different interlocutors, it is an inquiry into the notion of a perfect community and the ideal individual within it. During the conversation, other questions are raised: What is goodness? What is reality? What is knowledge? The Republic also addresses the purpose of education and the roles of both women and men as "guardians" of the people. With remarkable lucidity and deft use of allegory, Plato arrives at a depiction of a state bound by harmony and ruled by "philosopher kings."

>Henry Hazlitt - Economics in One Lesson
>With Economics in One Lesson, Henry Hazlitt provided a loaded arsenal for those who would do combat with the cloudy and mistaken economic wisdom of the day. In that respect, he is something of a refuter. He addressed every mayor economic fallacy, all prominently and widely held, and refuted them. He showed why protective tariffs are not protective, why minimum wage laws hurt those they are intended to benefit, and why government attempts to stabilize and fix prices throw them out of whack. And in doing so he advanced the notion that markets freed from government intervention can best serve and improve society.

>In a period when the economics undergirding the New Deal were ascendant, Hazlitt emerged as one of the most successful proponents of free markets, and one of the most forceful opponents of the Keynesian nostrums dictating U.S. economic policy. From his perch as an editorial writer for The New York Times he gave the Roosevelt Administration fits. At The Nation, where he signed on as literary editor but wrote extensively on economics, he gave his editors similar fits. And as a regular columnist for Newsweek from 1946 to 1966 he helped educate millions about the rudiments of economics and the failures of widespread government intervention. As a sign of the times, today we would be rightly suspicious of any economics writer with that sort of resume.

Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent—even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence. Who are we? We are highly successful, noncriminal sociopaths and we comprise 4 percent of the American population.”

>Confessions of a Sociopath—part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious—takes readers on a journey into the mind of a sociopath, revealing what makes them tick while debunking myths about sociopathy and offering a road map for dealing with the sociopaths in your life. Dean Koontz - Odd Thomas Series
>Mystery, Thriller, Horror

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz is the story of a young man, who, through circumstances out of his control, finds himself in a position to save the lives of hundreds of his friends and neighbors. Odd Thomas is a fry cook who can see dead people and shadow-like forms he calls bodachs. When Odd sees these bodachs around a stranger, he knows that trouble is coming to his hometown of Pico Mundo, California. Odd feels a sense of responsibility to stop whatever tragic events are about to unfold, so he puts aside personal concerns in order to uncover the coming darkness and stop it. Odd puts himself in danger to save the innocent. Odd never wanted to be a hero, especially not at the high price he is forced to pay. Odd Thomas is a novel that is at once humorous and filled with terror that will leave even readers new to Koontz's unique style begging for more.

> The Blade Itself

> "The blade itself incites to deeds of violence." Homer

> Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught up in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian, leaving nothing behind but some bad songs, a few dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

> Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends as cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

> Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a jar. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendships. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government... if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

> Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood. Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is fantasy with a real cutting edge.

Has the rest of the series (A trilogy, three standalone novels, and a short story [listen to that after you finish the standalone novels]), but I won't be posting descriptions for the rest.

What was there to understand? It was a world devoid of virtue. A world where the only thing that meant anything was pleasure. A world where humanity gets reduced to what feels good. Not a single great person throughout history would have wanted that world.

Stephen Moss - The Fear Saga (Complete Trilogy)
>Science Fiction

In eleven years time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships’ huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space.

These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Their technology is vastly superior to ours, and they know they cannot possibly lose the coming conflict. But they, like us, have found no answer to the destructive force of the atom, and they have no intention of facing the onslaught of our primitive nuclear arsenal, or the devastation it would wreak on the planet they crave.

So they have flung out an advanced party in front of them, hidden within one of the countless asteroids randomly roaming the void.

They do not want us, they want our planet. Their Agents are arriving.

Steve Hamilton - Alex Mcknight Series [1-10]
>Mystery, Crime, Thriller

Other than the bullet lodged less than a centimetre from his heart, former Detroit police officer Alex McKnight thought he had put the nightmare of his partner's death and his own near-fatal injury behind him. After all, Maximilian Rose, convicted of the crimes, has been locked in the state pen for years. But in the small town of Paradise, Michigan, where McKnight has traded his badge for a cosy cabin in the woods, a murderer with Rose's unmistakable trademarks appears to be back to his killing ways. With Rose locked away, McKnight can't understand who else would know the intimate details of the old murders - not to mention the signature blood-red rose left on his doorstep. It seems as though Hell will freeze over before McKnight can unravel the cold truth in this town that's anything but Paradise.

Funniest Audiobooks I have listened to so far.

>The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made

>From the actor who lived through the most improbable Hollywood success story, with an award-winning narrative nonfiction writer, comes the inspiring, fascinating and laugh-out-loud story of a mysteriously wealthy outsider who sundered every road block in the Hollywood system to achieve success on his own terms—the making of The Room, “the Citizen Kane of bad movies” (Entertainment Weekly).

>In 2003, an independent film called The Room—written, produced, directed, and starring a very rich social misfit of indeterminate age and origin named Tommy Wiseau—made its disastrous debut in Los Angeles. Described by one reviewer as “like getting stabbed in the head,” the $6 million film earned a grand total of $1,800 at the box office and closed after two weeks. Now in its tenth anniversary year, The Room is an international phenomenon to rival The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Thousands of fans wait in line for hours to attend screenings complete with costumes, audience rituals, merchandising, and thousands of plastic spoons.

>Readers need not have seen The Room to appreciate its costar Greg Sestero’s account of how Tommy Wiseau defied every law of artistry, business, and interpersonal relationships to achieve the dream only he could love. While it does unravel mysteries for fans, The Disaster Artist is more than just an hilarious story about cinematic hubris: It is ultimately a surprisingly inspiring tour de force that reads like a page-turning novel, an open-hearted portrait of a supremely enigmatic man who will capture your heart.

Alright, I'm uploading it to Mega right now. Shouldn't take more than a few hours hopefully.

Unfortunately there only exists an *abridged* audio version of the book. I ripped it straight from audible 1 year ago, back when using fake credit card info still worked to get one free audio book.

http://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Memoirs/I-Am-Jackie-Chan-Audiobook/B002V5GOAC

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/370152.I_Am_Jackie_Chan

Btw, I'm thinking about simply converting the full epub version into mp3 via TTS software (balabolka). I've done this before and it's surprisingly decent if you find a natural sounding TTS voice. My reasoning was that, since TTS works well for blind people, why shouldn't it work for me? It works especially well for non-fiction. I can now pretty much listen to any book at work - except for the very few which don't even have an ebook version.

>>701388
In that case, I'd suggest simply googling for horror author recommendations first. But you could also just search for "Horror" at the audio book bay. They have compilations and a 'horror' category too.
Clive Barker, Stephen King & HP Lovecraft come to my mind, but I haven't read any of them.

In the meantime, here's another of my favorite biographical audio books. Surprisingly funny book about the interesting life of genius physicist Richard Feynman (a Nobel-prize laureate; he also worked on the Manhattan Project (1st atom bomb).)

>Surely you’re Joking Mr Feynman: Adventures of a Curious Character - Richard P Feynman

>Written by Richard P Feynman
>Read by Raymond Todd
>Unabridged

>Winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1965, Richard Feynman was one of the world's greatest theoretical physicists, but he was also a man who fell, often jumped, into adventure. An artist, safecracker, practical joker and storyteller, Feynman's life was a series of combustible combinations made possible by his unique mixture of high intelligence, unquenchable curiosity and eternal scepticism. Over a period of years, Feynman's conversations with his friend Ralph Leighton were first taped and then set down as they appear here, little changed from their spoken form, giving a wise, funny, passionate and totally honest self-portrait of one of the greatest men of our age.

>I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action
>Written by: Jackie Chan
>Narrated by: Daxing Zhang
>Length: 3 hrs and 28 mins
>Abridged Audiobook

>I Am Jackie Chan is the fascinating, harrowing, ultimately triumphant story of his life: How the rebellious son of refugees in tumultuous 1950s Hong Kong became the disciplined disciple of a Chinese Opera Master. How the "paradise" that young Jackie so eagerly embraced proved to be, in reality, a ruthlessly competitive place. How the dying art of Chinese opera led Jackie to the movie business-and how he made the leap from stunt man to superstar.

Demon-Haunted_World.jpg

Another one of my all-time favorites non-fiction audio books by astro-physicist Carl Sagan:

>The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

>How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

>Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagan examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies of the past as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning with stories of alien abduction, channeling past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms.

And yet another one of my favorite nonfiction authors Daniel Dennett:

>Kinds of Minds: Towards an Understanding of Consciousness

Narrated by author
Duration: 3 hours : 31 min.

>Combining ideas from philosophy, artificial intelligence, and neurobiology, Daniel Dennett leads the reader on a fascinating journey of inquiry, exploring such intriguing possibilities as: Can any of us really know what is going on in someone else’s mind? What distinguishes the human mind from the minds of animals, especially those capable of complex behavior? If such animals, for instance, were magically given the power of language, would their communities evolve an intelligence as subtly discriminating as ours? Will robots, once they have been endowed with sensory systems like those that provide us with experience, ever exhibit the particular traits long thought to distinguish the human mind, including the ability to think about thinking? Dennett addresses these questions from an evolutionary perspective. Beginning with the macromolecules of DNA and RNA, the author shows how, step-by-step, animal life moved from the simple ability to respond to frequently recurring environmental conditions to much more powerful ways of beating the odds, ways of using patterns of past experience to predict the future in never-before-encountered situations.

>"This book began with a host of questions, and - since this is a book by a philosopher - it ends not with the answers, but, I hope, with better versions of the questions themselves."

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:54c06c62e29dbb689dec5928b47ff3e9e25c5040&dn=Kinds+of+Minds+by+Daniel+C+Dennett&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3A80&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fexodus.desync.com%3A6969

As you might be able to tell, I'm somewhat of a movie, science & philosophy geek. Though I do listen to detective stories, sci-fi, fantasy and others too.

Anyway, here's one last nonfiction recommendation from me for now:

>The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change
by Stephen R. Covey

>In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service, and human dignity -- principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:3f2844f75a5acae45374f8881ab2a219b1571928&dn=The+7+Habits+of+Highly+Effective+People+%28Unabridged%29+-+Stephen+R&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3A80&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fexodus.desync.com%3A6969

It's a sorta self-help book about achieving one's goals - both personal and professional. It's far from perfect - at times I found it repetitive, meandering and even boring. And you can tell the author's a devout Mormon in two instances or so.
But he always distinguishes his personal believes from facts. And I managed to take away a lot of important life advice about taking responsibility, my freedom and power of choice (inspiring story by a holocaust survivor), why it's a good idea to not just *seem* trustworthy but to actually *be* trustworthy, and more.
Overall I think listening to this book has made me wiser.

Could only find ebook. Still want to learn its content without reading. Use TTS to turn it into mp3
>make sure book text can be copied (easiest formats usually are mobi, epub, txt, cause of lack of unnecessary line breaks)
>download & install Balabolka
>if you don't like your default TTS voice, download & install a text-to-speech voice of your choosing. I use Neospeech Bridget, sounds more natural than most
>open ebook file in Balabolka
>remove unnecessary text
>choose voice & speed and do test reading
>(if text is not standard ebook format or certain things are always pronounced wrong) you might have to open text in MS Word first and 'replace' (ctrl+h) non-standard characters or words in the whole document. I always have to replace all the apostrophes with slightly different ones. Also remove spaces at the start of each line, because that sometimes cause crashes. Balabolka likes to crash a lot
>(split &) convert to Mp3. I like splitting by keywords and add a custom 'keyword' before each chapter heading, such as ###
>software might crash less if you convert to .wav first and then use any audio converter to convert that to mp3
>http://www.cross-plus-a.com/balabolka.htm

Okay, I think that's pretty much it. I hope I helped somebody out.
Btw, there seem to be new TTS voices that sound extremely natural, but they're commercial and it's difficult to find torrents.

>Aristotle for Everybody - Mortimer J. Adler

>Written by Mortimer J. Adler
>Read by Frederick Davidson
>Format: MP3
>Bitrate: 64 Kbps
>Unabridged

>Listening Length: 5 hours and 29 minutes

>Adler instructs the world in the "uncommon common sense" of Aristotelian logic, presenting Aristotle's understandings in a current, delightfully lucid way.

>Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.) taught logic to Alexander the Great and, by virtue of his philosophical works, to every philosopher since, from Marcus Aurelius, to Thomas Aquinas, to Mortimer J. Adler. Now Adler instructs the world in the "uncommon common sense" of Aristotelian logic, presenting Aristotle's understandings in a current, delightfully lucid way. He brings Aristotle's work to an everyday level. By encouraging readers to think philosophically, Adler offers us a unique path to personal insights and understanding of intangibles, such as the difference between wants and needs, the proper way to pursue happiness, and the right plan for a good life.

Also, does anyone have an audiobook of The Asian Saga: Shogun? There is one on the audiobook bay, but again, I'm leery of that, and the one on KAT links to a 404ing torcache file.
>>

Been using the audiobook bay for over a year now without problems. They got some rare legit torrents that I couldn't even find on KAT or any other torrent site.

All they need is your email. I'm guessing they require registration to decrease the likelihood of getting DMCAs. Just like any warez forums require that. Don't you have some 2nd email account for spam that you use for stuff like this? Torrenting in itself is *way* more risky than registering with your email on some website. A year ago I actually got a letter from FOX lawyers because a movie was torrented over my WIfi (I live in central Europe where they can do that.)

I heard a lot about this series and started listening yesterday, and oh boy, there were a few lines in the beginning that personally made me cringe: "..Science, the largest religion of the twentieth century..." and similar anti-skepticism statements of this manner.
It was overall still enjoyable and I've moved on to the next book (where he repeats this line within the first few minutes *sigh*).

>>708699
I'm allowed to listen to stuff at work. I can go through 1 long book in 1-2 work days. There are some weeks where this isn't allowed (because of guest visitors at work), so I've been thinking about getting some sort of hidden/skin-colored earbuds.
I also used to have daily 2 hour drives where I could listen to stuff. And before that ~90 min train rides.
I find listening only works well while doing routine/simple stuff. For example, while driving I occasionally don't pay attention to the book and if I listen to something while gaming, I retain almost no information at all.

>>
>>709210
Yeah, the first two books are kind of cringey. Hell, I skipped them on my most recent reread (going on now). You need to know what happened in them, but once you know that you can safely skip them. IMO the first really good book in the series is book 3, and you really get a good view of the world in the fourth, the fifth introduces my favorite villain in anything ever, and everything's a roller coaster that just keeps getting better. One thing I didn't realize is that these versions are missing pieces here and there. Book 3 is missing chapter 5, which is important in that book, and book 8 is missing some details of what he sees with his Sight. And book 4 has one mistake that they forgot to take out when James Marsters makes a reading mistake and then realizes his mistake and rereads it, and it's pretty funny, IMO.
>>
>>711950
Thanks for the info.

I'm 4 books in, and it might just be one of my personal pet peeves, but I really have trouble accepting a certain part of the world they're trying to set up in the books. *rant incoming*

I almost always get thrown out of the story whenever Harry talks about and nags about science, modernity or skepticism. And so far he has always done this at least once in the beginning of each book, presumably to set up the world they're in.

I just don't buy the fact that in a world where magic is real and where they don't even *try* to hide magic from non-magic people (unlike Harry Potter), the majority of people don't believe in it and even scoff at the idea. *Every single* skeptic is depicted as an asshole. Harry complains about the skepticism but never even bothers to demonstrate his powers to them or at least tries to see the good side in people not believing in this.

It kinda worked in Disc World where Death is virtually invisible only because people ignore him, but that only worked because it didn't take itself as seriously. And in Men In Black their whole organization is specialized in wiping out/manipulating memories.

Hell's bells! I'm gonna keep reading/listening, but that aspect just bothers the hell outta me.
>>
>>712102
Jim has implied in some of his talks/amas/whatever that there is in fact a government agency keeping the whole thing hush hush. For example, he implied that they were the ones responsible for Susan's werewolf tape disappearing. Also, there is a significant presence of supernatural people within the skeptics making sure that there are explanations for everything, as you will see in book 5.

Can someone please tell me which of these books made you laugh the most?

I've been going through several I didn't know yet and I personally found them too joyless and glum.

I've listened to:
Ender's Game
Dune
Foundation
1984
Fahrenheit 451

And found them good, but a bit too joyless for my taste.

Hitchhiker's guide was obviously funny and Snow Crash also didn't take itself too seriously.
I hear Cat's Cradle has humorous elements.

Anyway, I'm in the mood for books that'll put a smile on my face. Thanks!

If you want happy campy shit go back to Star Wars or whatever.

Great sci fi novels are rarely funny
>>
>>713740
>Great sci fi novels are rarely funny
I'm aware of that.
But as I mentioned there are exceptions, like Douglas Adams's book or even just Snow Crash. And I'm looking for those exceptions. That was the point of my question.

Besides, I'm not even looking for "comedies" per se, just books that occasionally make you smile / had a few uplifting moments. Lord of Light was pretty awesome and it made me smile, but it wasn't really a comedy at all. Maybe it was because I thought the main character's life wasn't all miserable.

Containing humorous elements =/= happy campy shit
There is quite a large spectrum between these two.

>Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture (2003)

>Read by Wil Wheaton

>Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history Doom and Quake until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry powerful and compassionate account of what it's like to be young, driven, and wildly creative.

I personally love this book. It reads like fiction but it's all been compiled by firsthand accounts

Tolkien's such a wonderful writer. There's a reason that his books have inspired Fantasy for decades. When he describes a hobbit hole, you see the green grass, the cheerful round windows, and every little detail of the Shire comes to life. He's not only known for creating these high-fantasy universes that are so archetypal and standard to us, but the way he describes characters and events happening is amazing. I've already been recommended one of his audio books as being really well done and I'm anxious to hear how it sounds.

Oh boy, looks like I found something to listen to for several months:

>The Story of Civilization - Will Durant (Unabridged) (Size: 8.68 GB)

>The Story of Civilization by Will Durant is an eleven-volume set of books, which is considered by many to be the twentieth century's classic masterwork of history for the general reader.

>The books are organized in such a way that they can be read as individual works or be read out of sequence with no loss to their meaning. The style of the books is conversational and peppered with puns and they are highly enjoyable to read.

>Durant is amazingly concise while still making his point. That being said, he does require the reader to do some work in that they must remember people and events. However, the books do not require heavy note taking or indeed anything of the sort because the books are a fun read.

>His style is a good mix of history as literature and history as a science. The mix is necessary for the sake of readability and those of you who have been reading modern histories that seem to rely too much on footnotes and data points or conversely provide little at all will find his style refreshing.

>For the student of history, this set is a fantastic collection. If you are looking to find an all encompassing treatise of world history, this is where to start.

>The Story of Philosophy - The Lives and Opinions of the World's Greatest Philosophers - Will Durant

>The product of 11 years of research, The Story of Philosophy is an endlessly inspiring and instructive chronicle of the world's greatest thinkers, from Socrates to Santayana. Written with exacting and scrupulous scholarship, it was designed both to command the respect of educators and to capture the interest of the layman.

>Durant lucidly describes the philosophical systems of such world-famous "monarchs of the mind" as Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Kant, Voltaire, and Nietzsche. Along with their ideas, he offers their flesh-and-blood biographies, placing their thoughts within their own time and place and elucidating their influence on our modern intellectual heritage. This book is packed with wisdom and wit.

I thought Colbert's first book was just meh, probably because the subject matter was just too mundane.
Colbert is at his best when he has great material and I think he does have it here. I especially love the part about the financial crisis. It's Colbert at his best.

>America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t - Stephen Colbert

>Book nation, in the history of mankind there has never been a greater country than America. You could say we're the #1 nation at being the best at greatness.

>But as perfect as America is in every single way, America is broken! And we can't exchange it because we're 236 years past the 30-day return window. Look around--we don't make anything anymore, we've mortgaged our future to China, and the Apologist-in-Chief goes on world tours just to bow before foreign leaders. Worse, the L.A. Four Seasons Hotel doesn't even have a dedicated phone button for the Spa. You have to dial an extension! Where did we lose our way?!

>It's high time we restored America to the greatness it never lost!

>Luckily, AMERICA AGAIN will singlebookedly pull this country back from the brink. It features everything from chapters, to page numbers, to fonts. Covering subject's ranging from healthcare ("I shudder to think where we'd be without the wide variety of prescription drugs to treat our maladies, such as think-shuddering") to the economy ("Life is giving us lemons, and we're shipping them to the Chinese to make our lemon-flavored leadonade") to food ("Feel free to deep fry this book-it's a rich source of fiber"), Stephen gives America the dose of truth it needs to get back on track.

You have to read philosophy slowly and carefully. Maybe if you are already familiar with the ideas and have read it before you can listen to it as an audiobook but otherwise it's near to pointless. They are complex works that require real thought, constant rereading of key sections, and leaving the text for encyclopedias, scholarship, and specialist dictionaries.

You are not dumb. You just aren't taking the subject material seriously enough. Also Nietzsche should not be your introduction to philosophy if you don't know much about it. The dialogues by Plato, while great exercises in the way they attempt to simulate thought as if you were in a debate, are for the most part mysterious in the sense that you never really learn much about Plato's philosophy form them (which isn't the point of them).

>Maybe if you are already familiar with the ideas and have read it before you can listen to it as an audiobook but otherwise it's near to pointless.

I'd like to think I am quite familiar with the ideas. I've listened to a ton of Dan Dennett and he introduced me to the ideas of the philosophers I mentioned and many others, and in a way I could readily grasp.

The problem is, as I see it, that pretty much all these philosophers only write for themselves and for other philosophers in highly technical language and they shun examples. Their works are only meant to be read by other philosophers.

I was looking for a 2nd hand account such as >>701743 "Nietzsche for everybody" or something like that.

>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass - AudioBook

>First published in 1845, the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass became Frederick Douglass's most well known work. It is as the name implies his autobiography.

>Frederick Douglass was born a slave and underwent horrendous treatment at the hands of his owners. He later escaped to the north and became an outspoken abolitionist. Not only did he have a great life story to tell, his skill in telling it has long been admired. Douglass traveled throughout Europe lecturing about slavery.

>After publication, the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass quickly became a best seller and within three years there were over 11,000 copies published in the United States, had been reprinted nine times and had been translated into two languages (Dutch and French). The book was so well written that some argued that an ex-slave could not be as articulate as Frederick Douglass demonstrated himself to be. Of course, Douglass did write the book and it stands today as a monument to the human spirit and what may be achieved with hard work no matter where in society somebody may begin.

>Frederick Douglass had to leave the United States and flee to Ireland for a period after the books publication and its immediate success for some believed that Douglas' ex-owner Hugh Auld might try to get his "property" returned. After two years he was able to return to the United States after his freedom was purchased for $710 from Auld.

Another of my absolute favorite non-fiction books:

>Written by Daniel C. Dennett
>Read by Robert Blumenfeld
>Format: MP3
>Bitrate: 64 Kbps
>Unabridged

>Can there be freedom and free will in a deterministic world? Renowned philosopher Daniel Dennett emphatically answers “yes!” Using an array of provocative formulations, Dennett sets out to show how we alone among the animals have evolved minds that give us free will and morality. Weaving a richly detailed narrative, Dennett explains in a series of strikingly original
>arguments—drawing upon evolutionary biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, and philosophy—that far from being an enemy of traditional explorations of freedom, morality, and meaning, the evolutionary perspective can be an indispensable ally. In Freedom Evolves, Dennett seeks to place ethics on the foundation it deserves: a realistic, naturalistic, potentially unified vision of our place in nature.

(Well, I did mention that Dennett is my favorite author)

>Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon
>Written by Daniel C. Dennett
>Read by Dennis Holland
>Format: MP3
>Unabridged

>An innovative thinker tackles the controversial question of why we believe in God and how religion shapes our lives and our future

>For a growing number of people, there is nothing more important than religion. It is an integral part of their marriage, child rearing, and community. In this daring new book, distinguished philosopher Daniel C. Dennett takes a hard look at this phenomenon and asks why. Where does our devotion to God come from and what purpose does it serve? Is religion a blind evolutionary compulsion or a rational choice? In Breaking the Spell, Dennett argues that the time has come to shed the light of science on the fundamental questions of faith.

>In a spirited narrative that ranges widely through history, philosophy, and psychology, Dennett explores how organized religion evolved from folk beliefs and why it is such a potent force today. Deftly and lucidly, he contends that the "belief in belief" has fogged any attempt to rationally consider the existence of God and the relationship between divinity and human need.

>Breaking the Spell is not an antireligious screed but rather an eyeopening exploration of the role that belief plays in our lives, our interactions, and our country. With the gulf between rationalists and adherents of "intelligent design" widening daily, Dennett has written a timely and provocative book that will be read and passionately debated by believers and nonbelievers alike.

I probably feel like this about it, because I've regularly encountered threads that only consist out of wall of links -- no effort put into it; no descriptions or even names. Not gonna sludge through that all that to find the gems.

My point is pretty sensible I think:
If you share a book you enjoyed and want others to read it too, then *give them a reason to*.

I can probably find pretty much all these books on my own on torrents sites, so I'm mostly just here for interesting book ideas and to make my own recommendations.

>>723465
Thanks. Looking at the description and reviews, it seems to be about libertarian economics, so I'm rather skeptical about its neutrality.

We reviewed two chapters from economics in one less in econ101 and my teacher was like a run-of-the-mill republican. She probably copied it, because it is in the public domain and one of the most widely read economics books. If you want to understand & get economics, this is the book. It's based on real life examples and it is super easy to understand.
It deals with economics, not "libertarian" economics. Libertarianism didn't even exist when it was written.

>It deals with economics, not "libertarian" economics. Libertarianism didn't even exist when it was written.

Alright to be fair, the description says it only influenced it
>A million copy seller, Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson is a classic economic primer. But it is also much more, having become a fundamental influence on modern “libertarian” economics of the type espoused by Ron Paul and others [...]

And wtf is up with that image? They're Jewish? So fucking what?

Anyway, this all reminded me of 2 other "audiobooks" I would recommend. Uploading now.

>"audiobooks"
I put that into quotes because it's actually just the audio ripped from documentaries.

>Inside Job (2010 film) - Audio ripped

>Length 1:50 hr

>From Academy Award (R) nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson, comes "Inside Job," the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, "Inside Job" traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia.

>98 % Rotten Tomatoes
>88 % Metacritic

>Critics Consensus: Disheartening but essential viewing, Charles Ferguson's documentary explores the 2008 Global Financial Crisis with exemplary rigor.

Here's the other documentary this discussion reminded me of.

>The Corporation (2004)

>Length: 2:24 hours

>THE CORPORATION is a Canadian documentary film written by Joel Bakan, and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott. The documentary examines the modern-day corporation, considering its legal status as a class of person and evaluating its behavior towards society and the world at large as a psychiatrist might evaluate an ordinary person. This is explored through specific examples. Bakan wrote the book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, during the filming of the documentary.

>90 % Rotten Tomatoes
>8,7/10 Top Documentary Films

>Critic Consensus: The Corporation is a satisfyingly dense, thought-provoking rebuttal to some of capitalism's central arguments.

Dead Mountaineer's Inn by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky

Summary: When Inspector Peter Glebsky arrives at the remote ski chalet on vacation, the last thing he intends to do is get involved in any police work. He’s there to ski, drink brandy, and loaf around in blissful solitude.

But he hadn’t counted on the other vacationers, an eccentric bunch including a famous hypnotist, a physicist with a penchant for gymnastic feats, a sulky teenager of indeterminate gender, and the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Moses. And as the chalet fills up, strange things start happening—things that seem to indicate the presence of another, unseen guest. Is there a ghost on the premises? A prankster? Something more sinister? And then an avalanche blocks the mountain pass, and they’re stuck.

Which is just about when they find the corpse. Meaning that Glebksy’s vacation is over and he’s embarked on the most unusual investigation he’s ever been involved with. In fact, the further he looks into it, the more Glebsky realizes that the victim may not even be human.

In this late novel from the legendary Russian sci-fi duo—here in its first-ever English translation—the Strugatskys gleefully upend the plot of many a Hercule Poirot mystery—and the result is much funnier, and much stranger, than anything Agatha Christie ever wrote.

Written by Frank Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Herbert.
Read by Simon Vance, Scott Brick, Michael Prichard
Format: Mixed
Bitrate: Variable
Unabridged

This is a collection of all of the Dune Audiobooks by Frank Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert as of December 2015.

By Frank Herbert.
Dune (1965)
Dune Messiah (1969)
Children of Dune (1976)
God Emperor of Dune (1981)
Heretics of Dune (1984)
Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)

By Kevin J. Anderson & Brian Herbert.
House Atreides (1999)
House Harkonnen (2000)
House Corrino (2001)
The Butlerian Jihad (2002)
The Machine Crusade (2003)
The Battle of Corrin (2004)
Hunters of Dune (2006)
Sandworms of Dune (2007)
Paul of Dune (2008)
The Winds of Dune (2009)
Sisterhood of Dune (2012)
Mentats of Dune (2014)

Not really a huge fan of the post-Frank era, as I'm not sure Brian or Kevin knew how to write science fiction. As an example, there is a technology in Dune that allows them to fold space and travel around quicker, but that was only introduced after the Butlerian Jihad (Which they butchered, BTW, but that's another story). In the books that take place *during* the Jihad the humans do a circuit of their planets and it apparently takes about a year to get all of them. With one ship. Yeah. There is no explanation as to how they travel at FTL speeds, and they don't even acknowledge that there should be.

And finally, here's The Black Count.
Amazon summary:
General Alex Dumas, is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. But, hidden behind General Dumas's swashbuckling adventures was an even more incredible secret: he was the son of a black slave—who rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time. Born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Alex Dumas made his way to Paris, where he rose to command armies at the height of the Revolution—until he met an implacable enemy he could not defeat.

Last Chance to See

A brilliant book by author Douglas Adams of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame. My personal favorite of his and a damn entertaining read.

Douglas Adams sets off, alongside zoologist Mark Carwardine, around the world, searching endangered species. Extremely funny, and read by Adams himself, which makes it, in my opinion, the best way to enjoy this book. Thoroughly recommend it -will keep seeding.

One Hundred years of solitude

The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. It is a rich and brilliant chronicle of life and death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

The Troop

As Stephen King said "scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't put it down. This is old-school horror at its best".
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there—which makes Scoutmaster Tim's job a little easier. It comes to them in the night. An unexpected intruder, stumbling upon their campsite like a wild animal or biological nightmare.
