Generally I think dubbing is for illiterate faggots like Russians, Italians and Americans, but good and accurate subtitles for some of the Japanese movies and anime is hard to find.

Dubbed versions at least try to put translated text into context, so we can understand why they are all shouting.
>>
>>555255
Me too. But this only applies to anime. In feature film it's ok.
>>
>>555298
japanese version with subtitles
>AM GOIN TO FUCKING KILL YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
dubbed version
>am... gonna fucking kill you mmmmok

yes subtitles were hard to find but not nowadays there are literally thousands of fansubs in every fucking possible language you can imagine, so no Sr. I have to disagree with you if we were in the 1990s ok but not now.
>>
>>555298
>illiterate
Well it's not our fault that we don't happen to grow up in Japan or attend a a Japanese language school... Nor do most of us wanna dedicate a large portion of our time to learn Japanese just so we can watch shows. I honestly don't know what the problem is with English dubbing. The studios usually hire really good English voice actors whereas with Spanish, Italian, and Russian, they tend to hire any tard they can find. I remember watching DBZ once in Spanish and it sounded absolutely ridiculous. Sounded like some ranchero was wailing into a mic.
>>
>>555312
What's wrong with watching it in Japanese with English subtitles now? Not all of us are that otaku to become a fluent in Japanese weeaboo like you. Subtitles at least let us enjoy the original material.
>>
IMO voices are also part of the acting, dubbing cut that part so i prefer original voices (no matter the language) with (good) subs
>>
IMO voices are also part of the acting, dubbing change that part so i prefer original voices (no matter the language) with (good) subs

>>
>>555232
I'd download these if I didn't already own most of them. I will take Death Powder though, thank you very much. Japanese Cyberpunk is one of my favorite movie genres. Rubber's Lover is the best of the ones you posted, and easily one of the most beautifully shot movies I've ever seen, perfect use of black and white. It's a bit misleading to call it a prequel to 964 Pinocchio though. It could kinda be considered one, but it's really a standalone movie (plus the plot/tone/cast/etc is totally different).
>>
>>555602
Industrialpunk is actually pretty accurate. These films are heavily influenced by industrial look and pollution. Surrealism + industrial style = Tsukamoto.

The Animatrix (????????) is a 2003 direct-to-video anthology film based on The Matrix trilogy produced by The Wachowskis, who wrote and directed the trilogy. I find it hard to believe anything that involves death by drill penis is anything but 20th century style surrealist/absurdist tryhard pseudo-art schlock.
"ohh look how deep I am! Please overrate me for my hollow attempts at pointing out the meaningless of existence by giving you absurd un-tertainment that'll just make your retch. Here's a closeup of some maggots eating a woman's eye! GIB MONI PLX: AM GUD ARTIST YES?"

There's a lot of that going around in Japanese movies, it seems.
>>

When you go into a movie with at attitude you're bound to hate it.
What did the movie do wrong that wasn't "being DEEP"? Because I didn't see any point or agenda he was pushing, instead he just wanted to creep the audience the fuck out. And when you want to creep someone out, you go for the genitals first.
>>
>>574675
It just seems way too easy and way too on-the-nose. It just appeals to a niche of viewers who react to gross-out moments by promptly overestimating the thought that was put into it.

I go in to be told a story in a way that differs from the "safe" mainstream Big Mac entertainment, and what do I get?
Interesting new storytelling techniques; Not likely. Something that deviates from standard formulaic approaches; Usually. Unusual characters; Probably. Some combination of shit, piss, gore, vomit and blood; almost certainly.

If the plot supports it, and puts you in there with the characters, it can work when it's sufficient for the point that's being made in the scope of the narrative be it for plot reasons or for exposition.
But that's not what's going on at all.
It "makes sense" up to a certain threshold - beyond a certain level, the focus of the act/scene in question becomes the ridiculousness/horribleness of itself, and not why it's significant in the greater whole.
The movie begins to "wank" - not because now would be a good time to wank and it makes sense to do it now. No; it wanks because it gets a rise out of knowing that you EITHER may or may not necessarily want to watch it wank, which happens to be a win/win for it.

The people who make movies outside of the mainstream all too often just resort to meaningless gross-out scenes for the same reason that a monkey in a lab might push a button to get a banana.

Being grossed out is not exactly a big deal for me, and that's exactly why it bothers me that I have to deal with it because, much akin to opening a forgotten Tupperware container filled with rotten meat from the back of the fridge, I'm not exactly shocked but I'm not exactly having a blast with it either.

Anyone else have this problem?
>>
>>574684
I really liked Tetsuo, but I understand your criticism. Without the gore and gross out effects there's not much left.
People that make these movie outside of mainstream movies because that's the only way it will ever be made. Restrictions are much looser, so they decide to go all out. But sometimes going all out just isn't enough, and the movie fail.

But Tetsuo still has a little more going for it, a lot of Tsukamoto's camera direction is experimental and they get some really cool shots in. Over half the film is you trying to figure out just what exactly is happening, which adds to a frantic (and confusing for some) pace throughout the film. Which really helps it, because if they had the explanation of why the man was transforming in the beginning it would be very boring. Each and every character is a terrible person, and when you see their bodies mangled up in metal it at least feels like they deserved it partly.

I'm not sure what other non-mainstream movies you've been watching, but I've still never seen another movie like Tetsuo the Iron Man.
>>

I wholeheartedly agree that movies like this have merit.
Sometimes these strange and unusual movies truly take us for a ride through strange landscapes both visually, narratively, technically, and emotionally. That's what's so fascinating about them. And sometimes I do find that a particularly imaginative gross-out scene will often really burn itself into your memory in a way that makes a movie unforgettable, for better or for worse.
Thanks for some real 5-star posts, discussing has been a pleasure.

Has anyone here seen this:

I got it from Amazon a couple years back and apparently it's sort of hard to find now. It has a really similar vibe to Tetsuo and it's probably the best thing Andrey Iskanov's done.

Yes, its the first one you should watch (not the first one chronologically tho). If you're interested in the rest I recommend you the following:

>Ghost in the Shell (Movie from 1995)
Or the alternative version: Ghost in the Shell 2.0 with some 3D ugly scenes and different voice actors)
>Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Another movie)

>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Series)
>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (Series)
>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society (Movie)
The "Stand Alone Complex" saga has different setup than the movies, so its better to start from here since the series will explain the world around the movies much better.

>Ghost in the Shell: Arise (Will be 4 OVAs, only the first was aired)
This also have a totally different setup than the previous, much more modern bullshit. But if you're a fan of GitS you can take it. Chronologically its the first of all and the main character is a lot younger.

dude what?
Tetsuo doesnt really have gross out moments. That whole scene was like 5 minutes and still continues with the whole "im turning into a machine" deal thats been happening thus far.
Theres no real "gore" in the whole movie really. It does make you feel uncomfortable but not in that way.

>While the electronic rebellion genre known as "Cyberpunk" may have been created by a computer illiterate, it was fully adopted by the Japanese, who would be the dominate species according to foundation of this brave new world
I don't think that an actual japanese would make such an disrespectful statement

That "computer illiterate" wrote more of the language of computing and system design than you know and more of cyberpunk than any japanese have contributed to the genre since (99% of these stories are concepts lifted from Gibson).

The japanese have done the best so far of rendering the stories and themes to animation but what have the japanese contributed to the cyberpunk genre other than their worship of giant mechs that they've had since the 70's? (Yeah, I know, ironic considering how this post began.)
They should make an anime with giant monsters, mechs and cyberpunk. Call it a Tokyo Trifecta.

PS: Neuromancer seems to be in the pipe to come out from Hollywood next year. How bad do you think will they fuck it up?

It was initially envisioned to have Mila Jovavich (presumably as Molly) but she is off the table I think, and according to wiki Mark Wahlberg or Liam Neeson are on deck as Case.

Just want to say that I dig the thread and comments. Bruce Sterling, one of the very first authors who ever created the genre cyberpunk along with Gibson, NEITHER has had any movie made from their work, and Sterling's most cyberpunk work was called The Animatrix, at least 2 decades before the Matrix animation came out with the same name. Right now, there is a giant "inclusion" effort for underrepresented voices in SciFi, so we get a shit load of adolescent vampire lovers, hunger games crap. Cyberpunk stuff like Ghost In The Shell stays contemporary not because of violence but because of the ethical questions it asks. I want less ghost movies, less horror stories, less teen murderers, less suicide and more android outfreakage in high quality animation. By the way, I feel the animation was better than the Ghost manga. And I'm tired of giant robots. Just my 2 cents.

Also: >>590121 What I want to see is Sterling's Animatrix short stories in outer space brought out and done well. I want Yoko Kanno to do the music. Even though it is probably better for Gibson to be treated like Phillip K Dick, it would be cool to see the Cowboy Trilogy and Idoru Trilogy each get a treatment from possibly Wachowsli Bros. or Ridley Scott.

Arise isn't in english, neither is Innocence. Ironically they're both considered the weaker parts of the franchise, but for opposite reasons.
Start with the movie or manga, work your way through SAC, by the time you're done Arise will probably be half dubbed.
Innocence... doesn't that much demand for a dub.

The talent pool for English voice actors for these things is limited at best, the voice don't convey the same feeling, emphasis or... acting that the original voice actors and writers put into the script. For anyone who actually cares, its as grating as badly translated subs... but even more so if you know anything at all what good voice actors actually sound like.
