HOW DO WE STOP TANKING IN THE NBA?
>>
Introduce relegation and promotion
>>
Stop rewarding tanking.
>>
>>78281789
but then you'd have 10 unwatchable teams in flyover cities
>>
The teams that miss the playoffs play a single elimination , march madness style tournament on a neutral court.

Winner gets 1st Pick, runner up gets 2nd pick.
Rest of the draft goes in order of worst record, so the team with worst record would pick no later than 3rd.
>>
Once a team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, every win they get should help them get a top pick. The earlier a team is eliminated from the playoffs, the more games they will have to rack up wins which will help their draft pick.
>>
There are 30 franchises playing in the NBA. Relegate the bottom 10 teams to a league with the 10 best D-league teams. Each league will have its own draft, so the tanking teams won't get to pick the new stars.
The new D league will only have 16 teams, but maybe they can add a few more so that each league will have 20, which is a good number for a league.

This has also the good side effect of making the NBA teams play less games per season, which at 82 is way too much.
>>
Make the draft lottery the bottom 10 teams and make each team only have 1 ping pong ball
>>
>>78281737
Simple. Every team who misses the playoffs gets 1 lottery ball. That's all.
>>
>>78281737

>>
Why did ((((Silver)))) become obsessed with stopping tanking anyway? Literally nothing wrong with it, the current system is fine.
>>
For anyone saying relegation remember that an NBA team's salary and facilities upkeep costs will bankrupt any relegated team which will be playing in front of 2000 people paying $5 for courtside ticket. Relegation is just not realistic.
>>
>>78281737
Remove the max contract limit. Teams won't be able to stockpile superstars anymore.
>>
>>78283010
Decrease in games is also not realistic because players will refuse to take a paycut.
>>
>>78283046
Players choosing to take a small paycut is realistic. NBA teams agreeing that 2-3 of them every year will go bankrupt is not realistic.
>>
>>78281737
No team can pick in the top 5 more than 2 years in a row.
>>
Tanking doesn't work usually. I mean the T-Wolves are finally looking like contenders but 4 years later the Lakers and 76ers are still irrelevant teams.
>>
>>78283193

>>
Relegation
>>
>>78283046
Do players get paid based off of games played or by season?
>>
Get rid of max contracts. If you have a hard limit on what a player can earn individually, teams can start pooling multiple superstars while staying within the overall salary cap. Remove this, and the talent will spread out a lot more and the entire league will become more even.

For example, Lebron and Curry are both earning around $35 million per year. They're both worth at least double that, easily, and with no cap that's what they'd be getting.
>>
>>78283287
By season. But if you reduce the number of games, you reduce tv money, so you reduce the revenue, so you reduce the salary cap....you get the idea. This is why the absurdly bloated NBA playoffs, where literally half the league gets in, continue to exist despite being completely retarded. The money is just too good.
>>
>>78283287
The NBPA is guaranteed 49%-50% of the "basketball related income" the league earns. The players themselves negotiate individual contracts that pay them by the season. The problem is that if you reduce the total BRI then the player salaries have to go down as well.
>>
>>78281763
Nice, but relegation to where the developmental league?
>>
If you really want to avoid relegation (top kek) then why don't you split the lottery half and half between the teams that did worst in the playoffs and the teams that tanked. That way you're giving the good teams that need a little something extra a helping hand and you're not guaranteeing that tanking will get you a nice pick
>>
The problem with rewarding failure is that there is no reason to be average. In football you can at least slowly build from an average team but in the NBA there is nothing at all beneficial from being average. You either contend for a title or try and be as bad as possible
>>
>>78281737
Get rid of the lotto. It incetivises tanking rather than detering it. Teams keep trying to 'win' the lotto but don't come close, thus reinforcing the need to try and tank next year and 'win' it. The lotto is suspect at best as an institution e.g. the Bulls drafting Rose anyways.

Just do away with a rigged system and have people actaully compete. If you tank, you tank, at least then you will stop tanking when you percive you got the best player for your franchise for a couple years. There are gonna be shit teams anyways.
>>
Another option is to make teams play less games and have two parallel playoffs, one with all the teams that didn't make the real playoffs, and let them play a single elimination tournament to compete for the draft picks. By keeping the total number of games the same you can reduce the retardedly lengthy regular season and keep the same number of games for TV revenue. This should actually increase the revenue, since games are more meaningful than regular season games.
>>
>>78283515
>let them play a single elimination tournament to compete for the draft picks

The kid that gets drafted is looking to steal a job from one of the vets. Why would the vets want to help their team replace them?
>>
>>78281737
Disband all small market teams.

Every argument comes down to this
>teams need superstars
>you either get them through the draft (so you tank) or free agency
>athletes in their 20s don't choose to play in Utah or Indiana (what a surprise)
Flattening the odds just makes it more untenable for GMs of those teams
>>
>>78281737
Since relegation and promotion is gay and most teams don't ooze money to work around it, let us assume the NHL where 16 team make playoffs and 15 don't. 17th place is the first non-playoff placing in most cases.
1. 17th place
2. 18th place
3. 19th place
4. 20th place
5. 21st place
...
15. 31st place
16. Lowest seeded team to get knocked out of playoffs in first round
17. Next lowest seeded team to get knocked out
...
30. Stanley cup runner up
31. Winner of cup.

The bottom 5 placing teams get extra compensation picks inbetween either rounds 1 and 2 or rounds 2 and 3 so tjey don't get perpetually fucked.
>>
>>78283864
I will add that teams who get a top 5 pick should not be able to get a top 5 pick 2 years in a row and would be moved down accordingly.
>>
>>78282471
>legate the bottom 10 teams to a league with the 10 best D-league teams

This is way too many. The quality would go way down.

You are getting rid of NBA quality players to go play in the D league every year. The only way this would work is if star players on shitty teams can be picked up by NBA teams regardless of contract.
>>
What if each team had 15 contract values and only one player could get each amount? I know this is incredibly unrealistic and terrible, but it would disperse talent, unless guys were willing to take HUGE pay cuts.
>>
get rid of the niggers
>>
Silver doesn't want to get rid of tanking any more than Stern did.

All he'd have to do is divorce the draft lottery from the team records. Make the whole lotto random every year. He won't do that.
>>
also, salary caps do not work. MLB has more parity than NFL, NBA or NHL.
>>
>>78284007
Salary cap in the NHL isn't for parity, its so Canadian and small market teams don't bankrupt themselves with stupid owners and have to move, as was the case just before the salary cap was instituted due to rapidly rising player salaries.
>>
>>78283939
Ans just too be clear, i mean every team would have ONE $20,000,000, ONE $15,000,000, ONE $10,000,000, etc...
>>
>>78283386
unironically yes

get rid of the need for college ball too
>>
>>78284051
That was also due to a tanking Canadian economy in the 90's
>>
>jiggaboojam
>>
make draftees better so you're not SOL if you miss out on the #1 pick.
>>
>>78283312
NBAPA is as strong as it is because they ask the stars to take less than their real value in order to help out the lesser guys. Those stars make significantly way more in endorsements anyway so it's OK. It's just following more in the way of MJ.

I hate to break this to you marks but tanking in the NBA is 99.9% myth. It's literally just inept coaches and FO staff going "Uhhhhh... I meant to do that" to keep their jobs and owners and fans alike fall for it every time.
