>How is hitting a ball with a stick considered a sport tho?

It's probably useless to explain it to you, but hitting is one of the most difficult skills in sports, and hitting major league pitching is arguably the most difficult (primary) skill in sports.

>Luck

Luck implies we all have an "equal" chance at success. Fun fact. The average bat speed of an MLB hitter is about 90-100mph. The average Joe's bat speed is about 30-40mph.

You only have a 120ms window to get the bat around to hit a 95ish mph fastball. From comparisons I've seen, the average Joe takes about 300ms to get a bat around.

And this is only the athleticism part of swinging. A good swing requires precise execution of mechanics. Any hiccup, and you won't see success. If a hitter is 7 milliseconds off either way, a foul ball is likely.

http://www.businessinsider.com/science-major-league-fastball-brain-reaction-time-2016-4

One of the hardest things to learn along with all of that is how to visualize the strikezone. Even MLB players have trouble with it. Then, you have to learn the tendencies of 100s of pitchers and how those tendencies relate to your strengths and weakness.

Miguel Cabrera, for instance, will remember what a pitcher threw him on a 2-1 count with a man on a base in a 2 out situation 7 years ago.

>Teammates say Cabrera has something that approximates a photographic memory when it comes to his swings. The story goes that he can remember several seasons’ worth of plate appearances in almost pitch-by-pitch detail.

There's nothing "lucky" about it. The Luckswing name is probably one of the stupider names for baseball I've seen.
>>
>>78132025
This like saying the world champion is the winner of the Champions League and not the winner of the World Cup. It's a nonsensical comparison because their each the world champions in their respective areas.

Viewership is increasing by double digits every edition int the US and it's already a huge thing in every other baseball playing nation. It's never going to be on the scale of the World Cup because very few countries play baseball. The US is the only baseball country that doesn't watch it atm.

>Im saying its not a sport.

Why not?

The only physical attribute baseball doesn't challenge is stamina.

The average player speed in the MLB is 18.4 mph, which is as fast as Robben ran during his famous World Cup sprint. In fact, baseball players consistently reach higher sprint speeds in game than soccer players.

Average vertical leap of an MLB player is 28". Average NBA vertical? 28".

A pitcher generates about 1200 pounds of leg power, same as a soccer player when they kick a ball full power. MLB hitters generate 8000 pounds of power during a swing.

Sure, a few fatties who are exceptionally skilled as well as athletic (fat=/=unathletic) finds themselves in specialist positions, like DHs and relief pitchers, but fatties aren't the rule in baseball. Out of the league's top 200 players, you'll only find find one fatty (CC Sabathia).
>>
>>78132185
the WBC was founded in 2005. we're not making excuses, we're just not participating because it means nothing.
>>
>>78132160
>This, at least boreball is a valid critique.

Indeed. I'm not going to tell people what to like nor criticize them for their taste. If the pitcher/batter matchup bores you, you'll never like baseball. I like most sports, and baseball is simply a different experience than goal sports. I'm just as entertained watching Joey Votto draw a walk after 13 pitches that ends in a razor thin take of a ball a half-inch out of the strikezone as watching Lebron, Curry, Odell, etc, etc.

But I can understand why the former bores people. They want to see constant running and jumping. Fair enough.
>>
>>78132230

>>
>>78132270
How is that an argument? The T-Rex can't held properly the baseball bat yet still beat the MLB player.
>>
>>78132352
It's gotta start somewhere. Baseball is an international sport, it needs and international competition that's credible. The US has a history of making excuses in international conference competition whenever there's a challenge desu.
>>
>>78132441

T-Rex's are beasts. They have great natural bat paths, and due to their extraordinary vision, the ball just slows down for them.
>>
>>78132450

Fat=/=unathletic. Fielder was clocked at 18 mph on the basepaths.

In his prime, Fielder ran a 6.8 60 yard dash, which translates into a 4.5 forty. Of course, you gain speed, but a safe estimate is around 4.7.

Cristiano Ronaldo ran a 25m dash under laboratory conditions in 3.61 seconds. You can give Ronaldo Usain Bolt 10m split times and his 40 yard prorates out to about 4.8 seconds.

>tell me, what makes a good pitcher.

Velocity.

Movement. There's some pitchers who have blazing velocity but can't produce movement so they're easy to hit.

(For starting pitchers) Need to have shutdown 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th pitches, e.e. a great curveball, slider, changeup in addition to a moving fastball.

Ability to almost robotically deliver every pitch the exact same way. Hitters can pick up on body language cues, changing arm angles, changing arm speed, and the like.

Control. Most important. Every batter is different. Some batters punish low balls on the outer half of plate, some batters like the ball high and inside, and some, like Mike Trout, seem to have complete zone coverage. A pitcher needs to be able to hit those 3 inches boxes within the zone consistently. See pic. You leave a ball in the fourth row of boxes, Judge is making good contact. But if you can hit the strikezone just a inch below, his contact rate plummets.

Yeah, baseball is like an inversion of cricket.

>>
>>78134103

>>
>>78134218
>i bet DBs and safeties could keep up.

Soccer fans overrate the stamina demands of the sport, and any pro athlete who trains his body to sprint 4.3-4.5 40 speeds would have enough stamina by default to deal with soccer's endurance, which is similar to basketball and aerobics.

The whole controlling the ball with the feet thing is soccer's main challenge, obviously.

>>
>>78134296
>I didn't overrated, but it would be a big change of paradigm having to run all the time rather than having constant breaks.

A lot of NFL players run miles at a time for their conditioning. Jerry Rice would run 2 and half miles non-stop up a steep hill. .

Average distance covered in soccer match is about 7 miles over 90 minutes. Do the math and that's about walking speed.

NFL position players would be able to keep up. That said, I do agree that soccer players have an edge here since NFL players have more muscle mass, which affects stamina.
>>
>>78134247
>and any pro athlete who trains his body to sprint 4.3-4.5 40 speeds would have enough stamina by default to deal with soccer's endurance

Holy shit no. You have literally no understanding of how training as a pro athlete or training in general works
>>
>>78134326
>Football required almost no stamina. Energy in short bursts

But to achieve the athleticism to compete over those short bursts, you have to do a shitload of training which will naturally give you great endurance by default.

As I said, Jerry Rice would over 2 miles without stopping up steep hills. 7 miles over 90 minutes won't tire him out. Now is his stamina as great as a professional soccer player? Obviously not. Football players tend to be bigger, have more muscle mass, which all affects stamina.

But Rice wouldn't be "dying" after a soccer match, like most soccer fans assume.
>>
>>78134361
7 miles is not the average distance covered, it's the average distance run during a match.

The average NFL player runs 1.25 miles in about 11 minutes a play time, which is terrible.

That being said their different kinds of athletes so comparing them is pointless. One trains for endurance and the other for strength and explosiveness.

>>78134373
And
>>78134437
>>
>>78134373

What's impressive about soccer's stamina demands?

We're not talking marathons, triathlons, cross country skiing. We're talking 7 miles over 90 minutes with a 15 minute break in between. Calorie to Calorie, soccer burns about as much as aerobics.

If you don't think an NFL CB, Safety, WR, RB, many of which have off-season conditioning programs that exceed soccer's aerobic demands, could "keep up," then I don't know what to say.

And by keeping up, I mean they would finish an entire match without "dying." I'm not suggesting Odell Beckham could out-stamina Neymar.
>>
i'm pretty sure all these athleticism arguments are irrelevant cause we don't know how good these elite american athletes are with their feet
we know they can run and we know they can endure but the hard part is getting the ball to go where you want it to go using your feet

>>
>>78134437
>7 miles is not the average distance covered, it's the average distance run during a match.

It has to be distance covered as opposed to ran. Do the math. 7 miles/90 minutes= about 5 mph. Jogging speed is around 7-10 miles. Sprint speed >15mph.

If they only considered distance ran through jogs and sprints, you'd see averages of around 15 miles over a soccer match.
>>
>>78134530
this whole discussion is pointless
i have 0 doubts that nfl/nba/nhl/wtf athletes could endure 90 mins of jogging and some sprinting but the question is if they would be good or just pacy fat guys with no end product that can't even cross the ball
>>
>>78134566
>some sprinting but the question is if they would be good or just pacy fat guys with no end product that can't even cross the ball

Straight from their sport? Of course not. Don't soccer fans usually say it's a skill sport first and an athletic sport second?

I'm actually against the American opinion that all our best athletes would dominate soccer if we focused on it. Our best athletes tend to be taller than 6 feet at the very least across all the main sports leagues. Soccer is a low center of gravity sport that favors shorter people and shorter legs. The reason West African blacks are so fast (in addition to fast twitch) is because they have longer legs on average. And our best white athletes typically look more like Gronk than Donovan.
>>
>>78134680
I somewhat agree, but the best Football player of all time measured 1,83 meters, so there is that

300 pound NFL lineman run 4.6-4.8 forties all the time.

Ronaldo, in a LAB SETTING, ran 25m in 3.61 seconds. At that pace, his forty time rates out to 4.8-4.9 seconds.

Fat=/=slow. Lean=/=fast.

>Its a shame America doesn't like baseball anymore,

Total myth (and meme).

A lot of those "baseball is dying" articles will either use ESPN ratings of national games to make their case, citing the increased age of baseball's average viewer (most people watch their own teams on regional networks as opposed to watching ESPN's game of the week or whatever), World Series ratings (the World Series often faces NFL regular season games), and baseball's lack of a national star (where's baseball's Lebron!).

Baseball probably won't produce a national star like a Lebron, Curry, or Brady because fans are fans of their hometown players first and foremost. If you polled 100 NBA fans, 60 would name Lebron as their favorite player, 20 Curry, and the last 20 would be split among Westbrook, Durant, and randoms. Poll 100 MLB fans and 20 different players would probably get 5 votes each.

The sport is healthier than its ever been arguably. It just can't beat the NFL.
>>
>>78135481
>Whats the deal with that. its the only thing you fat fuckers seem to enjoy?

It's the low supply of games coupled with fantasy football addictions and the way the NFL has positioned itself as a weekend "event." This means fans (and sports shows) have to get a lot talking about it done in a short time. Also, since there's so few games, every NFL game feels like a playoff game.

There's just not much material to "talk about" over any single baseball game out of 162. Baseball is also "bad" at generating off-field drama (flag protests, social feuds, LaVar Ball type characters) that can fill up Skip Bayless's or Screamin A. Smith's show.

But people watch and enjoy the sport. It outrates the NBA most of the time nationally and kills the NBA regionally.
>>
>>78135511
>The sport is healthier than its ever been arguably. It just can't beat the NFL.
Does it hold a similar position to cricket in this country in that it is a sport without casual fans? Cricket isn't huge here like it is in Australia or India, but those who love it really love it, and it gets healthy and surviving attendances and viewership from the loyal autistic fanboys.
>>
>>78135555
Why are there so many games
>>
>>78135587

I would say baseball's fans tend to a bit more diehard since following a team through the travails of a 7 month long, 162 game season emotionally connects you the team a bit more compared to other leagues. Baseball fans also tend to follow their minor league affiliates to keep up on the development of their top prospects. But teams like the Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox have a lot of casual fans.
>>
>>78135511
people really don't show up to games in full force very often anymore, outside of the playoffs. which has always been a slight problem, because sometimes they have to play at 1 pm on a tuesday. but i go to games sometimes, and when i compare the crowds that i see to crowds i've seen on film from classic games, regular season games even, it just doesn't appear the same. i see lots of families, drunks (the annoying kind) and otherwise quiet people who just stare.
>>
>>78135642

I think I like the Red Sox because they have a nice history and because of the Liverpool connection.

>it just doesn't appear the same. i see lots of families, drunks (the annoying kind) and otherwise quiet people who just stare.
Same thing is happening in every sport desu, getting rid of drinking in stadiums just ruined it for the people who would drink casually and made it so the drunks have to sneak in their own booze.
>>
>>78135618

I'm not sure. Since baseball is the country's oldest pro sport, it could be they decided to have so many games because it was the primary entertainment option in towns and cities in the 19th and early 20th century. More games=more profit.

Could be so that there's a large enough sample size to try and account for variance (I don't buy the luckswing idea, though. A great team can be great over 10 games or 162).

I'm okay with it. Makes roster building and farm systems more challenging and important.

>How do I get into baseball? Is there a regular highlights show? How do I decide a team?

If you appreciate cricket, baseball should be a relatively seamless transition (I don't think the sports are competitors to each other. They're kind of yin (cricket offensive) and yang (baseball defensive).

Tactics and strategy can be pretty dense. It's not an Xs and Os sport like goal sports and the tactics (like cricket) center around the "mind games" batter and pitcher engage in. A good starting point is to get familiar with player tendencies and then the batter/pitcher matchup will no just look like a couple of guys playing catch.

Check this site out.

http://www.fangraphs.com/

Type in a player and you can see his various strengths and weakness, how pitchers attack him, and so on.

A good site for highlights is MLB.com. They also have a cool feature called statcast that shows player sprint speed, batted ball exit velocity, and so on.

It's true. And the Flynn effect projects black and white IQs to relatively equal in a few decades, the last thing the white boys had over us brothers. Turns out, lower IQs are typically the product of malnutrition and stress in the womb rather than some voodoo genetic component (which has never been discovered. There is no "IQ gene").

And brothas and sistas here and in Africa faced dire malnutrition at the hands of you whiteys raping our land and people.

My Afro-American heroes are Morgan Freeman, Thomas Sewell, and Nell De Grasse Tyson. You're confused hood culture with African American culture. Hood culture has only been prominent over the last couple of decades.

Why do you think older blacks like Freeman are so much more well spoken? Now, I lament the rise of hood culture, but that was obviously a whiteman invention to sell "danger" to bored suburban white children. Hood culture would've died out if white kids didn't buy all those rap records, since there would be no money in it.

I always love when foreigners act self-righteous.

Here's how split times in the 40 yard typically go for sprinters in the NFL:

Athlete 1

10 yd - 1.59
10-20 - 1.06
20-40 -- 1.94
40 yd - 4.59

Athlete 2

10 yd - 1.70
10-20 - 1.05
20-40 -- 1.95
40 yd - 4.70

Let's give Ronaldo the 20 yard split time in the first example of 1.94 (.97 seconds per ten yard split). Adding that ten yard split to his 25m (27 yard) time of 3.61 seconds, we get 4.58 seconds. And there's still 3 yards to go. 3 yards is 30% of 10 yards, .97 x .30 = .291 seconds. 4.58 + .291 = 4.871 seconds.

Give Ronaldo Usain Bolt's fastest 10m split time and his 40 time would be projected to 4.6. Ronaldo ain't accelerating like Bolt in this universe.

He's not that fast. I don't care how shredded he looks.
>>
>>78136315
>the origins of hip-hop

There was no ghetto hood gangsta culture associated with early hip-hop. It was about block parties, having fun, and dancing.

LA record companies invented gangsta rap and by extension hood culture.
>>
>>78136410

Over 40 yards, the more athletic NFL lineman certainly can.

"Fast" is obviously relative. Over 100m, NFL lineman would peter out. But the fastest DBs, WRs, RBs would obliterate Ronaldo over 100m.

>>

>Zlatan is 6'5 and is an amazingly skilled player.

There's always exceptions. Like the NBA's Isaiah Thomas who is 5'7" (he's listed at 5'9", but the NBA always adds inches), or the MLB's Jose Altuve (5'5" and a power hitter) but I think shorter players have the advantage in a vacuum in general.

I'm aware of that article, and they "if and but" throughout to give Ronaldo a few fractions of a second. Even so (his time by not making excuses for him about starting from a 3 point stance),

>It’s a safe estimate to say Cristiano could run the 40 yard dash between 4.64-4.70 seconds,

That's with giving him the extra .10 of a second. 250lb linebackers run those times consistently and some fatass lineman can log those times.

I'm not saying he isn't fast. Anything below 5.0 is actually fuckin' fast. Just that he's underwhelming speed wise compared to athletes in other sports and the hype he gets concerning his athleticism seems to have more to do with his physique than actual performance.. They also tested his vertical in that To The Limit show. He posted a pretty bad 17" no step and a 29" running vert.

Then Frenchy chimed in with his disbelief that fat guys can't be faster than Ronaldo over any distance.

That claim is obviously false. It's like you people don't watch any other sports aside from Divegrass. Forget American sports. There's plenty of fat ass rugby players who can motor.

There have been and is plenty of faster players than Ronaldo. Also been fat is unathletic, yes i known how fatsos can do a quick dash with great acceleration over a very short distance. They are not athletic, thier recovery time for that run is much longer than a healthy person. And fatso cannot keep doing that 40 run at a repeated pace wich is what an athletic sport should have.

Well of course "it is" since your favorite sport is soccer. I could easily make the argument that a sport where a twink build like Neymar's can succeed is also not an "athletic sport."

Throw that height and build into any other non-weight class sport (aside from stamina contests like marathons and cycling), and he fails. Neymar would also become exhausted playing the o-line much faster than a fatass because his lack of muscle mass would mean he would have to "work harder" dealing with the upper body strength requirements than a big lineman.

Endurance manifests itself in more ways than just jogging around. Also, if fat is unathletic, then what are all those 300 pounders doing in rugby (which is also a good test of stamina)?

What was Foreman doing winning the world title with a beer gut?

It's just cultural differences. European sports fans and the soccer heavy South American countries typically enjoy and appreciate more feminine male body types, so their main sport reflects that interest.

Americans have always preferred size, explosiveness, and power. Like in high school. Cross Country running was typically a sport for girls and nerds. Same with tennis and even soccer. Those were "skinny" people (and by skinny, I don't mean lean. I mean looking anorexic). An American athlete wouldn't be caught dead looking like this while this build is prized in Europe and SA.
