This is fact. This is also why if Jordan went up against teams like the Spurs and Warriors, he would not have 6 rings. Sorry, but he just wouldn't.

Thoughts?
>>
>>78131400

Shit, that' 8 years away. By that time we'll all be proclaiming someone new who hasn't even been drafted yet is GOAT. Either that or durant/curry after they win like 5 in a row
>>

LeBron as the GOAT is the most forced "debate" ever. Someone will surpass Michael Jordan but it's not going to be that gigantic faggot.

>>
>>78131045
lmfao
>>
>>78131451
It is what it is. Pippen got drafted in 87 and wasn't ready to hit his potential until 89-90. Jordan was extremely selfish (given his immense talent and competitive nature, anyone else would be) until year 2 of of the Triangle. He hit his prime just as Bird broke his back, Magic got old and revealed he had HIV, and the Pistons eventually broke apart.

So given all that, and how the Bulls played in the first 3peat, it would be extremely difficult, if almost impossible, to beat last year's Warriors. Jordan and Pippen can only defend one guy at a time (although those 2 and Grant played great pressure defense) and Harper didn't come around until the second 3peat. Cartwright and Zaza pretty much cancel each other out and even if Javale plays only 6-10 minutes, those can be exploited.

All in all, the developments the game has taken pretty much favors the modern team almost every time. Getting into the whole thing about giving everybody modern training is another matter.
>>
>>78131718
Cartwright is far better than Zaza. He's like twice as physical, he will eat Zaza alive.
>>
>>78131002
He takes two steps, stops in place, then takes two more steps while changing the pivot foot twice.

"Yes, anybody can go win a championship. You see what KD did. What'd KD do? He took a paycut and went and teamed up with the best team. So a lot of these guys can now take paycuts, still make $100 million, go join the best team, .....then go be on a superteam and win a championship. This is facts. I'm not making this shit up. It happens. "
How a HOF truly feels about KD's move... He said this while ripping JR Smith lol

what did they mean by this
>>
Wait, Sidney Moncrief isn't in the Hall of Fame? That's absurd. That's 100% ridiculous.
>>
>>78131852

This is true. Back in the 90's and before you couldn't take a pay cut to be on a championship team since a the max contract was only like 5 million for a superstar. Back then players weren't paid a whole lot so they couldn't afford paycuts.

Nowadays you put up 10/10 from the bench and get hundreds of millions. You can afford to take a paycut whenever you feel like ring chasing, especially if you're an ultra megastar.

It seems the best way to fix basketball is to pay the stars less money and stop giving them ridiculous contracts so they can't afford a paycut.
>>
>>78131985
But then the leftover money from the TV contract goes straight to the jews at the top instead of the players.

You can't win in that situation. The money has to go somewhere.

Horford is a 4 time all-star and was one in 2016, it's not that bad to include him. With Butler and Millsap gone, there's even less talent in the East. If Drummond has a shit season offensively I can see Horford sneaking in if he averages 16/8/5 or something. I'm more confused how a guy who was an All-Star in 2017 in the stacked West won't make it in the East.

Why is Bill Russell considered better than Chamberlain despite worse stats?

Was he just the better man in the big important games?
>>
>>78151235

because Wilt is dead
>>
>>78151235
Because ringggggzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Actually, I don't think most people do consider him better than Chamberlain. Personally I am pretty confident that Wilt was better. Russell was an elite defender but Wilt was dominant and extraordinary to a degree that very few NBA players have been. But for people who think he's better, it's because he was a Gamer who played for the Celtics and won a million rings and was Unselfish and Played the Game the Right Way.
>>
Yao Ming >>> Dwight Howard
>>
>>78151235

>>
>>78151235
You have a bad mentality. Imagine if I pass the ball to someone who is in a good position to pass it to someone who is open to score. They score but no stat is attributed to me aside from a win. Wilt instead took basically every shot. Bill Russel did whatever it took to do to win. Getting his own personal stats up weren't the way to do that
>>
>>78151419
Being good at scoring is actually an important part of basketball, and Wilt was much much much much much much much much much much much better at scoring than Russell. Taking a lot of shots was the best way for Wilt to help his team win.

Also, Wilt literally led the league in assists one year lol
>>
>Taking a lot of shots was the best way for Wilt to help his team win.
So why couldn't he win a title until moving to the Lakers then? He even played along Jerry West in the finals against Russel and still lost. Also by the time he got to the Lakers he realised that his non stop control of offence was actually hurting his team and passed more.

>>
>>78151505
>>78151580
>>
>>78151580
Wilt could have been a better player if he had played a more balanced game. He wasn't flawless. He was still an extremely good player the way he played, and he was still a better player than Russell the way he played. And the more balanced version of Wilt would still have taken a really high number of shots because, again, he was really good at scoring and that helped his team win. Whereas Russell didn't take a lot of shots because he wasn't as good at it, and this is basically not a good thing.

IMO the reason that the Celtics won all the rings is because they had extremely talented, deep teams with a lot of good players and were really well-coached. I don't think you can attribute that solely to Russell.
>>
>>78151419

imagine a team where everyone played like wilt. You couldn't stop them, no matter who had the ball you'd just get straight up scored on. It'd be an unstoppable force. The only thing stopping wilt was getting triple teamed, that's it. You couldn't triple team 5 wilts since even the most selfish wilt would have the common sense to pass it to an open wilt for an easy dunk. There's literally no way a team of 5 wilts ever loses outside of someone like steph curry getting insanely lucky with meme chucks and hacking the wilts to the free throw line.

Now, on the other end, imagine 5 people playing like Bill Russel. They would all sit in a circle passing the ball to each other looking for an opportunity to score that never arises, and then the shot clock would expire and they'd turn the ball over. If everyone just passed like you described that's exactly what would happen.

Eventually, at some point someone on the team has to be the aggressor, the shot maker who creates opportunities to score by forcing the defense to collapse on him. Yes you need glue guys too, but anyone can fucking be a glue guy, but only special cases can be someone like wilt.

Team of 5 wilts sweeps team of 5 russels and it's not even close. 1 on 1 would be even more of an embarrassment
>>
>>78151758
>>78151727
A team of 5 Wilts wouldn't work because each would want to get their stats up whereas a team of 5 Russells would try and do their best to play as a team, which is the difference between them. You want a guy with nice stats or a guy who can you titles. You have to think of these things in context.
>>
another thing with Russell and those Celtics teams, is that I personally believe that Sam Jones is deeply underrated historically. Fantastic player, ahead of his time, did a ton of different things on the court, and was better than anybody Wilt played with before he went to the Lakers. Outstanding player.
>>
>>78151758
I don't really think it works that way.

There are positions for a reason and players are to a certain degree specialized.

Teams aren't made of the same player.
It's just a flawed analogy.
>>
>>78151984

I didn't mean exactly the same player, I just meant someone who could score as effortlessly as wilt could vs. so called "team" players who aren't as good at scoring but get credit for passing.

IMO Passing is the most overrated stat in basketball, next to intangibles. You need to be a threat on offense and be able to get yours if you want to be considered a good player
>>
>>78151837
I don't like the team-of-5-Wilts analogy myself honestly. But I think anon does have a good point: being able to initiate things and get your own shot on offense is a really valuable skill. And Wilt was good at that, and Russell was not.

Listen, Russell was a great player, don't get me wrong. I believe that he was a great defender and his intangibles and leadership were real. But when you look at what Wilt and Russell actually did on the court - not their stats, but their ability as basketball players - it seems impossible to deny that Wilt was a better and more talented player. He was soooooo much better at scoring - the gap is huge. It is a massive crater between their abilities as a scorer. And Wilt was also pretty good at a ton of other things on the basketball court.

Yeah, sure, I wish Wilt's intangibles had been better. But I still think Wilt was a better player overall when you take everything into account.

>>78152094
It's tough because passing is really important and I value ball movement on offense a lot. I don't want to diminish passing ability at all - but it's pretty clear that it is much less important than scoring ability. You can't rely on someone's passing ability to make them a great NBA player. Passing has to come on top of other NBA abilities. Passing takes a team from good to great but you have to have some other skills to dine out on. Like scoring, or shooting, or defense.

That said I think the analogy you're using is very silly. Passing is very valuable. It's just a secondary skill in the NBA.

Not him, but kiwi started the false analogies by suggesting Wilt would have won by playing like Russell. However Wilt's teams were usually inferior, so that doesn't make any sense. What would the result have been if Wilt and Russell were switched? Wilt didn't always play selfish, and he had difficulty even finding someone alpha enough to coach him. So serious basketball question. Is the way GSW team is currently constructed the wave of the future for the NBA? I mean for them the PG position is vey important be they only really have two of them. If you include the two way contracts the dubs have like 9 Forwards? Only two legit Centers while the third one can be a forward also. So what I'm asking is drafting 6'6 to 6' 11' guys the 'IN' thing to do to form the core of an NBA team now. While going with really tall picks is going to be a thing of the past because of the speed of the game is much faster now? So heavy footed player are a liability now. So unless you can move like a guard no matter your size you're SoL now, right?
>>
>>78152294
Stockton was a very good shooter, could score out of the pick n roll, and was an underrated defender. That said, he's probably the closest that you get.

And he still never won a ring. Although obviously there are circumstances there.
>>
>>78152425
*very important but they
>>
>>78152425
Yeah, I think in general that's true. It's interesting to note that Curry is the only player on the Dubs roster who is under 6'6.

I don't think it's as stark as you make it out to be - there's still a place for players in the league who can play center and point guard. But you definitely want to have lineups where you can have 3 players who are capable of playing the wing at the same time, especially for your playoff rotations, and the more that you can have at the same time without fucking up your system the better. People like to shit on the idea of "positionless basketball" but the basic idea of dividing things into PGs, wings, and centers is a correct one. And you can also see this trend in the devaluation of power forwards who aren't jumbo 3s and can't move up to play center, like Kevin Love, and how awkward it is to game plan around those guys. You really cannot have enough SGs/SFs right now.

> Is the way GSW team is currently constructed the wave of the future for the NBA?
No, they are just taking advantage of their strengths. The entire myth of the Warriors small ball era comes from the fact that Curry is a great shooter, and Drayvon can defend centers at 6'7 almost as well as a star center can. The Warriors didn't sacrifice rim protection or post defense, they just happen to have a great undersized defender. They didn't revolutionize 3 point chucking, they happen to have one of the greatest 3 point chuckers ever. They have to keep recycling some positions because of players getting paid in FA like Bogut. You better believe for the Warriors, the positions recycled won't be 1-4 because they have stars at each.
If some team comes out and wins with a dominant big man, you'll say big ball is back just as quickly.

It's not a question of whether you can have good bigs on a championship team. IMO of course you can.

The question is what kind of lineup do you put around them. I don't think you're ever going to see something like the days where you had a twin towers with Tim Duncan and David Robinson, or Hakeem and Sampson, or shit like that. If there's a dominant big man on a championship team, he's still going to have to be on the floor with a playoff rotation with 3 wings. That's the lesson to draw from the Warriors.
>>
>>78152774
So the argument is that power forwards will cease to exist? I'll have to get back to you on that. Non stretch 4s like Faried and Julius Randle are pretty useless I guess.
>>
>>78152860
I think they'll still exist because they're situationally useful and can be good in the regular season where lineups and scheming is a lot less tight.

But it's really hard to have your best lineups be two-big lineups or commit a lot of money to a non-stretch PF and expect to be a title contender, and I don't think smart franchises will do it.

>>
>>78152988
I contend that not featuring PFs has more to do with the league lacking PF talent. You can't tell me old Love, LeMethuselah, crypt keeper Dirk, crap market brainlet AD and manlet Green would be winning more championships in the Duncan/Garnett era.

On the other hand, if Love, Nowitzki, LeBrick, AD and Draymond were all just coming into the league, they would begin a new era of great PFs.
>>
Still pissed Durant ruined Cleveland's first championship and never allowed us to know what it's truly like to be champions.

Part of the fun of being NBA champs is that for a year, everyone fears and respects you. Everyone talks about who can dethrone you the next year. That fear and respect is part of what makes being an NBA champion so fun, and yet we never got to have that because all of the fear and respect was with Golden State. Everyone was trying to beat Golden State this year and the cavs were an afterthought all year... it's almost as if GS were the real 2016 champs and we were just another good team.

It's just the cleveland way. Even when we're the best team in the league and the defending champs, we're not REALLY even the best team. Fuck durant. Cleveland didn't win fairly in 2015-2016 just like GSW didn't deserve the win in 2014-2015. But with everyone mostly healthy on both sides this last time. GSW won out right and yes with KD but why didn't the Cavs have an answer for that? You can't say they couldn't get someone or didn't have time to prepare. So the Cavs and their 'fans' have no one to blame but the Cavs themselves for not winning the finals this year.

If anyone was going to be able to make it work, it would be AD, because he's just such a complete fucking freak. That said, even for AD, I think the odds are that if/when AD is on a title contender, he will play center in their best lineups.

>Draymond Green: of course he could be the exception that proves the rule.

That's a fair point. It would probably make more sense to say "PFs with a lot of positional versatility" rather than talking specifically about stretch PFs, which is a more specific category.

>>78153626
Lebron doesn't really fit into this discussion. I do agree that PF is his most natural position at this point in his career but he also has a huge amount of positional versatility and range, and plays SF all the time and it was his position for his whole early career.

Love, on the other hand, I think is a pretty good example of a guy who is really talented and good but who also has really issues finding his role on the Cavs in the playoffs. And it'll be interesting to see where AD's career goes, in terms of what roles he plays. And WRT Nowitzki it'll be really interesting to see how Markkanen does - not that he's as good as Dirk but there's similarities in their likely NBA roles.

averaging 20 in 25 minutes, allowing only 44% shooting at the rim sounds elite to me. Embiid's "going all out" results in lots of turnovers and fouls too, he was trying to do everything possible. Short minutes wouldn't make his stats that much better.

Those stats and elite defence don't make you an MVP. Davis is a better defender and had better stats and he shouldn't be MVP either, especially seeing as Embiid has so far a losing record
>>
>>78156384
right, MVP is really a team award because nobody can wrap their heads around a GOAT having terrible teammates. However, that does mean someone can play "like an MVP" without winning or being a real candidate. Embiid's stats would look great expanded to 30 mpg and a championship.

He's playing in the wrong generation. He'd be top tier if he was playing in the 2000s, pretty sad he was born 10 years too late.
>>
>>78159577
He'd be exactly the same if he was playing in the 2000s. It's a meme that today's game rewards different skills. Passing and shooting were always highly valued, there just aren't many bigs who can do it, not now and not 10 years ago.
>>
>>78160022
The game is all outside now. There's no space for playing in the post and aggressive bullyball. It's impressive that Blake was still able to shit and dunk on people despite this fact.

He'd be a monster back then. Imagine a holy trinity of KG/Duncan/Griffin.
>>
>>78160128
Wait, why does the emphasis on the outside game make it harder to play in the post?
>>
>>78160128
>There's no space for playing in the post
What the fuck? Are you retarded?
>>
>>78160288
Less touches, playbooks designed around getting the 3 pointer and overall less utilization of the traditional PF/C.
>>
>>78160382
That allows spacing for post players. You might get less touches but you should get better quality ones, especially seeing as coaches spend their time trying to figure out 3 shooters rather than post players
>>
>>78160567
No it doesn't because all the emphasis is on trying to get the memeshooters open that everyone forgets to pass the PF once the play is over because there was too much effort exerted into getting the meme shooter open that they'll be damned if they don't take that shot instead of giving it to the post player because the mid range is defined as "the most inefficient shot".

Fuck the 3 point line.
>>
>>78160382
Literally nothing you said has anything to do with spacing or lack of space.
>>
>>78160637
>mid range is defined as "the most inefficient shot".
Are you trying to say that it isn't? Because by every stat it is. Also if you actually watched basketball you would know that paint play is still a big part of things. Because of the death of the midrange it means you either go 3pt or you go in the paint. Plenty of guys like Boogie and AD still go off in the paint it's just that the good teams don't which should tell you something
>>
>>78160382
But that's mostly driven by coaches choosing to emphasize spacing because they think it's a better strategy than post-ups (also partly a reaction to changes in defensive rules and strategy).

>>78160637
>instead of giving it to the post player because the mid range is defined as "the most inefficient shot".

I'll be damned if I can understand what the fuck you're talking about here. like.... why the fuck are you talking about midrange and post play like they're the same thing

Jordan's defence wasn't that great at this point. He guarding the third option while Malone and Stockton was being guarded by Pippen and Rodman
>>
>>78161634
i doubt it, he'll play close to 30mpg, he's second offensive option unless you think Batum will be. I don't even know how Charlotte plays, thats how forgettable they are. possibly more than Orlando but idk, all my years i haven't heard of Charlotte ever trying to get better or go for a top tier FA. So i hope he gets at least 18/10/3
>>
>>78161512
Howard was actually not bad in Atlanta statistically, he was just really boring to watch.

Charlotte is weird because they're definitely a good team but they don't have a shot at being a contender and they never will. Their players are all annoying, limited, overpaid, or some combination of the 3, but that's not the same as being bad. They have a deep rotation of guys who are basically fine basketball players but no real stars. Kemba is a legitimately good scorer, MKG is a really good defender even if he's completely unable to shoot, Marvin Williams can get buckets, Dwight Howard is still a good defensive center who can get points and do stuff in the pick and roll. Batum and Jeremy Lamb are completely palatable rotation guys. Cody Zeller is OK off the bench and Malik Monk should be a fun rookie.

It's not a sexy team. It's a fucking ugly, disgusting, overpaid team with no clear path to improve. It's also probably the 5th or 6th seed in the east.
>>
>>78161579
OK, now post Russell's statline this season against whoever the second best guy was in 98
>>
>>78161929
Westbrook: 31.6 PPG on 24 shots, 10.7 rebounds, 10.4 assists
Malone: 27 PPG on 18 shots, 10.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists
>>
>>78161880
Batum > Howard. At this point I expect Zeller and Howard to be competing for minutes.
>>
>>78161884
agree but they should blow it up. Give Cleveland Walker and Howard and Gilchrist for #1pick 2nd round pick and IT4. Not like they're going anywhere for years to come.
>>
>>78162337
It's a real bastard of a situation to be in. It's hard to blow up a playoff team, especially in a small market like that, and they do have a lot of useful rotation players. The Batum and Zeller contracts are the real killers there.

>>78163785
NBA players are macho guys who respect one on one talent. Draymond is most talented on help defence.
>>
>>78163736
He thought Kwame was good talent before he drafted him you fucking dumbass. How does your example apply to a league of players voting for the best defender they go up against?
>>
>>78163977
My point is that being talented and being able to see talent are too different things. LeGM keeps bringing over people to the Cavs that turn out to be busts despite having plenty of time to see them play in the NBA and being an all time great himself
>>
>>78163736
are you fucking stupid? gtfo.
>>
>>78151235
He did outperform Chamberlain a few times but Chamerlain was generally better. Bill Russel was a better team player but always had a superior team
>>
>>78164023
Your example was about a guy who still didn't prove himself at top level basketball in the NBA. Jordan judged based off minimal evidence. Drafting is literally a gamble.

NBA players who go against other league players can easily judge who was the best defender they went up against during the year.
>>
>>78155175
almost 6'5
>>
>>78164142
But that's one on one play. Like I said Draymond is the best defender because of his help defence. Playing in the game gives you a clouded view
>>
>>78164218
Kawhii is still the best all around defender. Draymond only won the award because of voter fatigue and because Draymond constantly talked about winning it and how he wants it. It got to their brains and clouded their judgement.
>>
>>78164330
No he didn't. Kawhi's defensive numbers were down all across the board this season and the Spurs had a better defensive rating when Kawhi sat.
>>
>>78164350
>advanced stats

they don't prove a thing
>>
>>78164462
guess that means lebrons whole career is a bust then
>>
>>78164462
The Spurs gave up less points when Kawhi wasn't playing than when he was. You can't just say the eye test disproves every number saying otherwise. How can you say someone is the best defender in the league when their team is better when they don't play?
>>
>>78164500
So the celtics were better without Isaiah Thomas because they won 1 playoff game against the Cavs when he sat out? That shit can apply to any superstar who sits down and their team suddenly plays well enough to win. Plus the Spurs were far from being scrubs defensively.
>>
>>78164482
His basic career stats are 27/7/7. That's better than anyone in history
>>
>>78164218
>best defender
>is never put on the opponents best player down the stretch
>>
>>78164627
You provided a one game example where as we have 74 game span of Kawhi Leonard playing for the Spurs and hurting their defence while on the floor
>>
>>78164799
Draymond is a roaming defender. He guards every player on every play
>>
>>78164842
How about an entire career example of Kobe being the worst statistical shooter all time and still winning 5 rings for his team? Advanced stats don't mean a thing.
>>
>>78164915
That's not even a close comparison. It would be a fair comparison if Kobe Bryant was awarded with the best shooter of the year award despite not obviously being that. Kawhi Leonard was not the best defensive player, defence is told through stats.
>>
>>78164886
>he guards every player on every play

He doesn't.

And he's not the best defender because he's not good enough to guard the best players 1 on 1 for large stretch of minutes whereas Kawhi can
>>
>>78165048
And Kawhi is terribly at help defence whereas Draymond can cover for any defensive liabilities that his teammates create. One on one isn't the only kind of defence and there's more important defence for winning games
>>
>>78164970
1on1 defense isn't judged by stats.
>>
>>78165103
Yes it is. You can look at the FG% when somebody is being guarded by a specific player, as well as how many turnovers they commit
>>
>>78165093
>Kawhi is terrible at help defense

Prove this
Also
>can't play elite individual defense
>b-b-but he can do other things!!
>>
>>78165093
and Draymond gets to play with a bunch of young all-stars where as Kawhi gets to try to carry the AARP of basketball. Anyone with good talent can look great on GS. Does that appear in advanced stats? There's a reason most people say they're useless for judging shit
>>
>>78165216
But he does play elite one on one defence. Not as good as Kawhi but still elite. You can watch Kawhi play any game and he stays locked on just his own target. It's partly why he's so good one on one but limits his help defence. Draymond can not only guard every player on a single play but can also command the floor and direct his teammates whereas Kawhi is happy to be a stoic individual and focus on his own target
>>78165253
Yeah he gets to play with great defensive talent like Zaza and Curry. Klay is good but not great and Durant is average at best
>>

not even going to lie, im tired of young players and young "talent". I've been watching interviews of the lakers youth and well they're all retarded milennials. We should have gotten rid of clarkson, and should still before camp. The only ones with any type of maturity is Randle, Nance, Ingram, and Zubac, and i don't even know about zubac because his accent makes it hard to tell how retarded he is. Ball is making me regret the Lakers drafting him, he has too much publicity on the side, makes me think he wont live up to his potential like Howard. Should have gone with fox, he looks like he has tons of heart and toughness, like IT4 and a Kyle Lowry. and desu is faster than ball. but i need to see more of him.
I understand why pops like veterans, they know what it takes and they dont do stupid shit like smoke weed, cause when they do they end up like JR smith, not saying he is a bad person but someone who doesnt go as far as they could, he's a good guy off the court but you just cant rely too much on him on the court (debatable desu), what we're doing with ball is the exact same thing we did with Dlo, i won't be surprised if he goes out like him too.
I'll be rooting for ball because he can play, and i want him to succeed but i wont be surprised if he fails.
