Sweden is the only exception I can think of.

They have better prospects than us atm and a revamped youth system. They'll be a conpetitor in concacaf soon if mehico and america don't get their shit together.

if your parents have money and care about sports you play hockey
our good black athletes play basketball, it's a way out for them, they can get ncaa scholarships if they're good enough

few local clubs to have good development, if mls let canadian players count towards quota it would help

fields are snow or mud november-april, baseball seems to take precedent on most fields from may-july

it's hard to express how much of society is geared toward hockey here
calling it a national obsession would be understating it massively, it's just reality. even people who don't follow hockey and don't like the sport at all know about players, teams, results, etc. because it's just embedded in everything
