I think it is. If we look at the other competition for best defender in the league today, Draymond comes out on top. Rudy Golbert (and most traditional big men) just can't protect guards at all (as we saw him get shit on by Curry) and the only person who comes close to Draymond is Kawhi. The problem I have with Kawhi is that if you stand your best player off to the side and have him do nothing then Kawhi no longer is a problem where as like I said Draymond can be on every player in the same play. If we need a team to guard a modern NBA team then it starts with Draymond

I think the bigger problem for Kawhi last year was that he was expending too much energy on the offensive end? It's really murky but I don't really buy the "teams just took their guy out of the play" explanation for why his defensive on/off numbers looked so bad. It seems really implausible.

Obviously, most of the reason his numbers looked so bad was because he was playing with Pau Gasol and LMA, and because when he was off the court the Spurs had units with good defenders like Dedmon and Simmons instead of those guys. But I don't really know whether that explains all of it.

Draymond doesn't even guard the opposing teams best player most of the game though, it's usually Klay or Iggy or now Durant some times. Where as Kawhi he will most likely be put on guys like Durant/Lebron etc when you need it. Draymond is more of a help defender all around.

If I were to start a defensive team I would start with Kawhi because I can put him to defend the star players when I need too.

Most guys start a play defending their opposite position and this is probably the weakest era we've ever had for offensive power forwards, where as to your point this is prime small forward era. Kawhi is definitely the best one on one defender but like I said Draymond can run a floor unlike Kawhi who's solely focused on his own task. And again to my point Draymond can guard all positions and so he can be moved around to the best player if need be

It is true that Draymond is better at help defense than on-ball defense, but he's probably the best in the league at help defense. It's his single best skill. He is an all-time great help defender. He's really good at it, and it helps the Warriors defense be good, and it is a significant contribution to the Warriors winning. I don't see how you can dismiss him for being an elite help defender. We're talking about playing good defense, not playing one specific kind of defense.

Obviously, that's not to insult Kawhi, who has been an elite defender in his own right.

i looked it up. he had 3.0 defensive win shares last season and a defensive rating of 104. his DWS place him in the top 30 of all players that played more than 20 minutes, while his defensive rating puts him at #16. so not bad. he's still a great defender.

what's also true is that he got somewhat worse on that end. his DWS averaged out to 4.0 between 2014 and 2016, and his Drtg was the best (99.5) during that same time too. he was a top 20 defender overall during that time.

honestly it fits my >eye test. i still really really like him on defense and want him on the floor a lot, but it doesn't feel like standout defense anymore.

honestly the 2016/17 team confuses me. i just wanted to say that their defense felt murky and muddled throughout the season when i remembered they were literally the best defensive team all year, a half point ahead of GSW in defensive rating. such a weird group. i wish the roster had a cleaner look and better defined roles.

With Levine you had someone who was basically just Wiggins but worse, which is to say someone who is a pretty good scorer but that's it.
