They should have gone through the bollards rather than rejoining after turn 2

Matsushita was a complete dipshit and cut right in front of Leclerc, forcing him to take avoiding action by moving towards De Vries, but Leclerc was getting far better traction out of the corner than De Vries and either accidentally made contact with his rear tyre or De Vries tried to move to the right a bit and lost the rear, crashing into Leclerc and forcing him off track; it's hard to tell from the limited angles we were shown. When De Vries moved to the left, pushing Leclerc off track, I'm not sure if the contact that left him with a puncture had already happened or not.

Yeah Matsu forced Leclerc into attacking faster by kamikaze rejoin but it was clear DeVries just changed his direction at the beginning of T3 forcing Leclerc out, I don't remember if it was posted in earlier thread but in a shot from the back DeVrie's movement was clear with noone on his right side

Ghiotto got a massive advantage by not having to navigate the bollards, and Matsushita followed, imo that's a 5 second penalty regardless because he would've lost a position by not cutting the corner had the Lec/DeV crash been avoided. A bit like Hamilton at Mexico turn 1; it doesn't matter that he's ahead because he still came out further ahead of where he should've.

I still can't tell from the footage where the contact was made—there definitely was contact at some point as De Vries got a puncture—but what I can see is that Leclerc was gaining so quickly on corner exit traction that it caught both of them out when they had to avoid Matsoshit.

If the contact was at 0:12 in the webm it's Leclerc's fault as he could have moved to his left sooner; if it was after that point it's De Vries' fault as he left a shitton of room on his right and moved over on Charles. Genuinely can't tell whether when they both lost the rear and started to slide was because they made contact or they both tried to take avoiding action because there otherwise *would* have been contact. It doesn't seem to be overwhelmingly either of their faults though so I wouldn't penalise them for it, unless the contact was only after Leclerc was forced off the track.

2012 was before the FIA started to clamp down on moving under braking so that's irrelevant.
Senna's moving under braking wasn't even an extreme case, as he moved to the middle of the track to defend and then back to the outside, but left enough room on either side for Schumi to go to, so the moving under braking is even more irrelevant.
Schumi had massive closing speed on Senna and would've made the overtake if he picked a direction and stuck to it, but he panicked and turned into Senna's path while braking; just look at the first angle of webm related. There was more than enough space to go down the outside and he didn't take it.

I don't think it was really possible to actually go around the outside. He would have simply just been pushed out wide, and sent over the speedhumps and ruin the car. I think he was trying to just switch across toward the inside but Senna's much earlier braking point just caught him out.

Yeah, in my head my memory of it was much worse than that. I was wrong, and I did let my hero worship of Schumi get in the way. I just remember him flinging the wheel out of the car, and screaming idiot on the team radio. I just assumed that was toward Senna. I still don't think it was worth that sort of penalty though.

Only reason why, and it's not a very good one, is that I think in 08 Kimi hit Sutil in Monaco (albeit it was a drying track, and I think he went off line) but he got it wrong and went into the back of Sutil ending his race right there. It was investigated and there was no penalty.

Has anyone seen the crashes we've had over the years in the junior formulas? F1 drivers are the best in the world and most of the time they're good enough to avoid excessive accidents but the straight up hooligans in F3 and Formula Renault have given us so many big ones over the years. The thing is all of those hundreds, if not thousands of crashes were without the halo I believe we've had one fatality with Henry Surtees. That accident happened because the wheel tether broke, that's not something that happens very often these days.

The sport can't afford to take away yet another defining aspect of what people fell in love with F1 for. I'm all for safety and I don't ever want to watch a driver die but you can't neuter the sport chasing that 0.099% chance something happens.

There are tons of open wheel races each weekend all over the world. Yet not having a halo or similar device its proven each weekend that it's not necessary.

If you want 100% safe racing there's a thing called simulation software and there are some options out there.
