Josef Newgarden has an average finishing position of 16th~ at the GP of Sonoma.
His highest finishes were 6th in 2014 and 2016.
He will need to step it up and qualify extremely well in order to clinch this championship.
If Scott Dixon, who finished 1st in 2007, 2014, and 2015, gets out ahead then Josef's championship hopes are screwed.

Basically what I'm saying is you can love it or hate it but I doubt Nascar would ever go back to pure points racing. I feel like a lot you that gripe about it are too young to remember how boring it was to know who the champion was going to be 5 or 6 races before the end of the season. Yes others had a "mathematical" chance but everyone pretty much knew who was going to take it at a certain point. 1992 only happened in 1992. Most years it was the complete opposite, the last few races were stale and boring as everyone (including the broadcasts) asspatted the presumptive champ and team.

It's not much different than the chase where everybody pretty much stays out of the way of the chasers.

The only difference I see is that the drivers get fucked by the chase, where as they were actually rewarded through the old points system.
