But Kyrie has proven in the past he's just as good a scorer when his usage is higher. Put him on last year's Celtics team and the same thing would happen, especially playing with Bradley and Smart, having him hidden on defense.

Now add him to next year's Boston team with Hayward and it's hard to tell what his usage will be, but Kyrie is already more experienced with playing off ball and sharing on a team with multiple stars. If Westbrook was just after money he would've signed it by now, if he actually cares about winning and getting help like it was reported by Woj and Lee Jenkins after the Paul George trade he isn't satisfied with just Paul George, he should want a third player and not signing opens up the possibility of signing LeBron, Cousins, etc.

If Westbrook signs the extension it's a sign he's only in it for money like Wall and Harden and doesn't care about the team's cap or reduced odds of winning. Keeping the cap flexibility is a better option for the team and his chances of winning, otherwise they'd need to maneuver a salary dump trade of Kanter or Adams, and the only way you can trade Kanter like that is if you include draft picks and a young prospect player as bait for the trade.

I value rings highly as you see by my ranking but in Russell's cases, the league was extremely weak then so I have to take that into account. Bird I think was underrated and his rings mean a lot to me considering the East was good back then. In Wilt's case, I moved him up from what I originally had him (9 or 10) because of his per season ppg and 100 point game. Duncan over Kobe is just my opinion, you could flip them though, I think they are essentially interchangeable.

I just find it weird that people put LeBron top 3 so soon. That's why I got him at 9. He only has 3 rings, all of which were won in a tremendously weak Eastern Conference. Plus his shitty Finals record. I do give him some credit for beating that 73 win Warriors team, and getting Cleveland a ring so in my head canon he has essentially what amount to 4 rings (2 miami, 1 cleveland that's worth the same as two).

I will say this. If LeBron was to win another ring, I think I would be find with him jumping up all the way to top 5.

Our team has two major flaws, which we didn't address this off season. Lack of size and lack of rebounders. But there's a third one now, we actually got worse on defense because we lost a superior defender in Bradley and brought in Hayward who Utah had to hide on defense because he can't move laterally and Gobert was covering his ass whenever he got smoked.

So, we got worse on defense and we still (at this point in time) have to eventually play a Cavs team who we couldn't stop from scoring? We're still playing Horford out of position at C? We're now gonna ask Jaylen to play SG because Danny brought in 3 more SFs this offseason?

Granted, Tatum looks like an above average rebounder so that may help a bit if he's going to be play some 4, but we're still undersized.

This is troubling because we could potentially get knocked out in the first round if we match up with the wrong team, someone with versatile bigs who can spread the floor and a decent first step? If Horford is guarding someone like Porzingis or Embiid (unlikely to make the playoffs but just to make a point), and suddenly the lane just opens up because you got Brown, Tatum, IT and Hayward behind them? No, that's a recipe for disaster.

Which makes me wonder what Danny is doing. Howard was available extremely cheap, he would have defended and rebounded and Hayward would already be comfortable running similar plays with him that Gobert and him ran. Why not get him? Why try to get George and Butler (though Butler makes sense since he's primarily a SG and at least has a chance of slowing LeBron as a defender) when you already got all these wings?

One, I agree that, in some broad-high level sense, the reason that Bron is more efficient than Hakeem is because he's better at shooting and transition. But... that's in itself significant.

Two, I agree that the style of defense has dramatically changed. At the same time, LeBron's usage is much higher than Hakeem's was. He's taking a lot more shots which usually results in decreased efficiency. So there are factors that cut against Bron as well.

Three, at the end of the day, like... the goal of offense is to score. We can make all kinds of statements about how you should score and what ways of scoring require the most skill and are the most beautiful and all of that. But I think that the most important measurement has to be how much you actually do score. And LeBron scores more and more efficiently than someone like Hakeem or someone like Bird. It is really hard for me to believe that it makes sense to say that someone is a better scorer when they're less productive. If you score more points (adjusting for usage and pace and all of those things), you're a better scorer. They don't give you points for style in the NBA, they just give you points for scoring.

Now, if the argument is just that the difference in defensive styles is so significant that we should massively discount all scoring post-hand check rule, that would be a different argument. The Love/Wiggins trade was really good for them - Love has been a much better player than Wiggins every season so far and will be a better player than Wiggins again next year. Wiggins still isn't a good wing defender, and he's a volume scorer on offense which wouldn't help the Cavs much if at all. And selling out for championships now at the expense of the future is 100% the rational, correct thing to do when you have LeBron James on your team. And they did, in fact, win a championship.

The only real things you can criticize them for are, one, they didn't add a good wing defender last year - which might not have been possible, we don't really know what trades were on the table. And, two, they've completely fucked up this offseason - which is just a result of their FO and off-court situation completely falling apart due to LeBron leaving and Gilbert being an asshole. It's not like it was a decision they made not to trade for someone.

And plus, like, we're comparing them to literally the greatest team in the history of the NBA.

I think there's some wonky stuff going on with the ownership and the front office there. And then also, the problem is that when you draft a player like Anthony Davis, you're under a lot of pressure as an organization to build a winner around him. I think the fear about having a player like that leave in FA is really, really powerful and motivates a lot of the moves that a franchise like that makes. And that leads to making dumb moves and taking risks that are unlikely to pay off. And then, each time a risk doesn't pay off, you get a little deeper in the hole and you have to take even more risks to try and get back to where you were before. You don't have the time or space to stop and recover and reorient and figure out the correct moves to make. You start pressing. And I'm sure that it's worse when you're in a position where the relationship with the owner is tenuous as well.

I mean, you know, if you're the Pelicans, you make a trade like the Jrue Holliday trade, which I feel is a risk that really didn't pan out for them in retrospect. And then you hand out a few crappy contracts to get something going and make up for it. And then you hand out even worse contracts because you need to get some talent on the team to make up for the previous contracts that didn't pan out. And then you find yourself in a spot where you're in cap hell, and you need to give Jrue Holliday $126 million which there is no way on earth that he's worth, and you have basically 3 decent, healthy NBA starters on your entire team. But you still can't go and tear things down because you have Anthony Davis on your team and the ownership thinks you need to build a winner around him. It is a fucking difficult position to be in.
