For good takedown defense you need to understand grappling. Which means you need to study it. Especially since you wont be always able to defend every takedown, so you need grappling defense and quick get ups. So grappling is always relevant, even if it's literally just to defend against it.

Takedown defense, by itself, isn't that hard to learn, unless the opponent has drastically better technique or more strength/stamina, you could stuff pretty much anything. The problem is that EVERYONE worth shit sets their takedowns up or looks to time them. And that's a whole other animal.

Boxing wasn't always like this. The boxing commission's tolerance for injuries has been whittled down by decades of media frenzies stemming from fighters getting permanent brain damage in the ring.
The same thing will happen to the UFC over time. Every time a major injury occurs the UFC softens its refs up just a little bit more. Eventually it will be just like boxing where the ref halts the fight 5+ times every round to prevent any traumatic moments for the soccer moms watching at home. In 20 years I guarantee the UFC will be filled with people like these modern boxing pussies who game the point system by forcing the ref to halt the fight every time their opponent takes a swing. Just like boxing, MMA will eventually turn into a shell of its former self where victories are determined by who utilized the ref better.
All fighting leagues suffer this same fate. The only way to fix boxing is to let its organizations die of old age so a new commission that isn't shackled to decades of controversies can spring up and take their place.
