The military's service academies have football teams. And in most cases they're quite good and competitive; not necessarily because of sheer athleticism, but because they have decent athletes who are intelligent and well disciplined.

They all use offensive schemes that rely on the system, and not necessarily individual players, to succeed. Not to say that there haven't been some breakout athletes though, especially at Navy in recent years.

In hindsight, BYU, Boise State, Colorado State: all better choices than WVU. The Big XII just didn't want to gamble on a mid-major.

They got the football performance they needed, but the cost was probably too great.

Picking Louisville would have caused the same problems too.

Filling in the gaps doesn't make WVU any closer, it just means more travel for all schools involved. And again, WVU needs them, they don't need WVU; the Big XII doesn't care how much WVU has to spend travelling, or how much it hurts them to be geographically isolated. WVU has no power in the conference. Like you said, they were just a warm body.

If the Big XII were looking to survive as a conference, they'd drop WVU and add all 3 of those schools I mentioned earlier. But they don't. The Oklahoma schools can't wait to get out without losing face, and Texas doesn't have a care in the world thanks to the Longhorn Network. It's the other schools that will get burned: TCU, TTech, Baylor, Iowa State especially, etc.

1) While the Big East did have an AQ at one point, in their final years they did not play well enough to keep it. BCS rules dictated the conference champ must average a #15 finish, on average, over a 3-year span. The conference blew this, particularly after Miami and VT left, then legit changed the rules to protect themselves, even counting Louisville's final ranking in their last CUSA year, to keep the Big East afloat. The last few years of the BE were trash, and were far inferior to the current AAC.
2) Being the top team after the three actual best teams leave, doesn't earn you shit. If tomorrow UT, OU and OSU all left for the Pac-12, is the TCU football team suddenly P5 worthy? Fuck off.
