I think a lot of folks are sleeping on ECU. '16 was an uncharacteristically bad season. The Pirates could be the trap game on a lot of schedules. It all depends on how much the Defense shaped up in the off season, the Offense never had a problem lighting up the board.

I'll call it a 6-6 season with a low tier bowl win against a MAC babby or C-USA team.

If App runs the table, there's a real chance they'll threaten the NY6.

It just depends on how things shake out in the AAC.

Or if WMU's berth was proof that the committee will always choose an undefeated G5 team, regardless of strength of schedule, for the NY6 berth.

>Didn't he have two fumbles at the goal line for Clemson last year?

Yes, and yes. ECU also had some REALLY embarrassing red zone turnovers last year without him, especially at South Carolina, so maybe he will fit in.

ECU also picked up Wiggins on Defense from Clemson, and a D lineman from Minnesota. It was a good off season of recruiting for transfers.

But the problem with that kind of recruiting is the short amount of time for the offense to gel before the season starts. They won't even get an easy FCS game to tune up against a live defense, either. It's make or break out of the gate with JMU first up.

It doesn't matter. If you finish in the top 15, and you are more highly ranked than a P5 champ, you're in. Regardless.

It doesn't matter that they were undefeated, just that they capped such a high ranking.

Honestly it shouldn't have been them, but Houston shit the bed and no MW team was able to climb that high. A problem which will likely be corrected in 2017.

Hello Amerifriends, can someone explain why college [american] football is such a big deal in the US? Here in the UK we have university leagues for football but literally nobody cares except the teams themselves and the mates of the players, they're not even televised much less being the huge deal that college [american] football seems to be

Is it because people can't really connect to the professional teams the way people do in the UK here?

The NFL has only 32 teams (like 30 cities), college football is more akin to EPL (though without pro/rel), as there are 130 teams at the top level, then another four levels below that.

In the NFL, you can lose 7 games in your 16-game season and still make the playoffs.

In CFB, if you lose one game, you're likely fucked.

Good times.

Also the players are younger and therefore less developed mentality and physically. In the NFL, defensive players are bigger, faster and more disciplined, which means some offensive schemes simply won't work in the NFL like they do in CFB. This also means upsets are much more common compared to the NFL. Which isn't fun if you are a fan of a top team but is fun if you aren't.

They're all basically Real Madrids
Even with the 18-1 game the Giants only lost to the Pats in the regular season by 3 and held the lead in the 4th

That doesn't really compare with shit like the Boise-Oklahoma game, not even to mention App St-Michigan
>>
>>77783312

It's like Oxford vs Cambridge in the Boat Race but with the most popular sport in the country.

So instead of just two schools competing you have 100s of teams and many with the same storied history and rivalry as Oxford and Cambridge. The rowers on these teams are near Olympic standard. It's the same in college football, the best teams are full of elite players who will go on to be the best players in the NFL.

If a similar system existed in England then Dele Alli would only be starting his professional career this season after graduating from college.
>>
>>77784122
>Can there really be upsets in the NFL?
No not really, look at the patriots last year, they lost to buffalo (who finished 7-9) on the 4th game of the season. The equivalent would be roughly equivalent to a top 5 team losing to an unranked team. And what happened? they lost later in the season to the seahawks and still got 1st seed.
I think this plays into what >>77783990 said, and what you said. Look at Michigan losing to App-St. Michigan was expected to compete for the national championship that year and lost on the first game of the season to a non-p5 team. They were out of contention already.

This was true a decade ago, except for the 2007 season. Nowadays we're usually finishing the regular season with only one or two undefeated teams. With the playoff any good one loss conference champion could get in.

It's injected up to the eyeballs with traditions small and large. Every team is wildly different and these teams are people's identities, these are the places they live, make friends, fuck girls, grow into adults. The universities make gigantic spectacles out of these games and even the town or cities around get into it. It's really hard to explain but there's an electricity that starts to build up around early August that everyone get excited for. You see wild ass plays work that you would get fired for thinking about in the NFL and upsets are not uncommon so anyone can lose, winning it all is fucking difficult. At the end, you get a cool crystal coconut.

The only egregious instances that caused were pic related and 2011. Texas, USC, and Utah have every right to claim the 2008 natty IMO, as well as Oklahoma State the 2011 natty. But that also means Auburn gets the 2004 natty.
>>
>>77790265

2003 was right up there with 2011 in terms of how bad the BCS fucked up. USC was #1 in both human polls they used but Oklahoma was so far ahead at #1 in the computers that it kept them at #1 even after they got BTFOd by Kansas State in the Big 12 title game and USC stayed at #3. According to everyone who wasn't a computer, the BCS championship game that season was #2 vs #3. That was such a mistake the BCS had to change how they weighted their formulas after that season so computers weren't weighted so heavily.
>>
>>77790889
USC got a share of the natty at least.
>>
>>77790916

Right, but the BCS was created to prevent split titles so they failed pretty hard in 2003. It's possible LSU doesn't get the Coaches Poll title that year if they weren't contractually obligated to vote the winner of the BCS title game #1 (a few coaches still dissented and voted USC #1 in the final poll after the bowl games). USC was #1 in that poll before the bowl games and they beat #4 Michigan 28-14 in the Rose Bowl. That would have been an even bigger disaster for the BCS if the winner of their title game didn't get a trophy.

Yep, no conference will take USF until expansion happens again. Even then, who? ACC and SEC won't. B1G probably wouldn't. Too far for the PAC. The only way they get snagged is if the B1G snatches FSU and the ACC and Big XII have to combine, then take one of USF of UCF.

my understanding is as follows

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/02/07/college-hotline-the-pac-12s-expanding-revenue-deficit-relative-to-sec-big-ten/
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/10/18/13309192/big-12-expansion-conference-realignment-grant-of-rights-inevitable-death
B12 will expire their grant of rights
B10 Fox deal for Tier 1 will expire
P12 will be far behind in revenue (by up to $20M per school or more)
UT's LHN will have about 5 years left on it with ESPN (ESPN if they are smart will not re-up)
ND, if they want to join any conf, will be forced to join ACC by 2026.
>>
>>77793208

All the other parts happen around 2024, by the way,>>77793208.
>>
>>77793208
>ND forced

ND makes too much money to be forced to do anything. They can do what UT is doing, have their own network, and make bank forever. ND isn't even a part of the conversation.

The question on the Big 12 is, "Do the members want this conference to exist?" Regardless of what they say, UT having its own network is a firm move toward saying no, fuck this conference. Could you imagine if Bama got their own exclusive TV network? Why even stay at that point? Make money and play as an independent, you're set.

When the current Big 12 TV contract expires (negotiated for a dollar amount based on the 12-team lineup, including Nebraska and Colorado, shortly before the conference shrank), they will have zero negotiating power because their product is so shit. If UT leaves, that's the end of the conference. If UT stays, the other members will have to eat shit.

If they were smart, the B12 would do what the ACC did and just add members to shore up viewer numbers and create the illusion that the conference is in demand. But the B12 is not smart, and will be utterly shocked when they implode, pointing fingers and assuming they should be handed something just because they had a very successful season in 2005.

What could be more Texas than that?

We're off to a good start
>>
I think the Big XII will certainly implode, and the bottom half of it will wind up in the AAC (or whatever the premier mid-major conference of that time is called).

Teams like Baylor, TTU, Iowa State, KSU are all fucked. They will get relegated to mid-majordom for eternity. WVU is good enough to likely get an invite somewhere. Kansas' basketball will save it a spot in the B1G. Texas can go independent. The Oklahoma schools will get picked up, OU for sure at least.

The 4x16 Power conference setup seems to be the inevitable endpoint of all this realignment. There just aren't enough chairs, and there will be some very upset fan bases when the music finally stops.
>>
>>77793665

JMO, I think the future is 20 member mega conferences.
>>
>>77793665
>>77793696

>The 4x16 Power conference setup seems to be the inevitable endpoint of all this realignment.

>20 member mega conferences

UNLESS the playoff expands. Then we could see the opposite happen, and a re-balkanization of college football with smaller conferences. Smaller, lighter conferences with one or 2 heavyweight teams would have a lot more negotiating options--especially if ESPN and today's cable-centric contracts fallacy finally fails, and streaming becomes the norm.
>>
>>77793724
I doubt there will be any consideration for the playoff in conference realignment
>>
>>77793784

If TV deals go away, and that money becomes more important, you bet your ass it will be. And small conferences would split that money with fewer mouths.

The playoff is what started the Big XII madness last year anyway, after they got shut out.
>>
>>77793818

>>
>>77796057
Why can't you move out west?

The comfy west can be pretty inexpensive depending on where you live. There is more job growth there than in the east, too.
>>
>>77796438
I don't think Nebraska will leave, although they did lose their AAU status shortly after joining the B1G and are very much the academic red-headed step child of the bunch. The most realistic B1G expansion after the collapse of the B12 would certainly include Iowa State and then they'd try their best to get Texas to beef up the West and everything else Texas brings with it (prestige, academics, athletics, fanbase, TV market). Iowa State fits geographically, gets Iowa annually in-conference and is a decent basketball school. Purdue goes to the East division.

Northwestern
Illinois
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Iowa
Iowa State
Nebraska
Texas

East:
Michigan

Clemson played like garbage in the regular season last year. They should have lost to NCSU and Troy.

I think the ceiling is pretty high this year, but we may just as easily be fighting for bowl eligibility in late November. STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. OR ANOTHER YEAR OF OVERRATING MIDWESTERN PROGRAMS, TO BE PRECISE.

THIS WEEK MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THOSE ANNUAL TRADITIONS WITH SOUTH (WEST CENTRAL) FLORIDA V. SAN DIEGO STATE (NOT A STATE). ALL ACCOUNTS ARE THAT CHARLIE STRONG AND QUINTON FLOWERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO EMBARRASS THE AZTECS, BUT IF YOU GOOGLE SEARCH USF'S SCHEDULE FOR 2017, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THEY ARE RANKED 19 FOR THIS GAME, THEN UNRANKED FOR WEEK 2 AGAINST STONY BROOK, THEN BACK TO 19 AGAIN WEEK 3 AGAINST UCONN. GOOGLE CLEARLY THINKS THE BULLS GET CORRALLED THIS WEEKEND - AND CHARLIE STRONG IS NO STRANGER TO THIS - SO I THINK SDSU KNOCKS THEM OFF.

NEXT UP ITS THAT TEAM YOU USED TO KNOW BUT THEN YOU REALIZE DAVID SHAW STILL HAS A JOB. STANFORD WILL PLAY RICE. NOW I'VE HEARD OF CUPCAKES BUT COME ON. IS OUR GENERATION SO CODDLED THEY PLAY AGAINST PIECES OF MEALED GRAIN? CAN IT AT LEAST BE BROWN RICE? STANFORD ALSO HAS GOING FOR IT THAT THE SATURDAY MORNING WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT RADIO SHOW ON ESPN RADIO NAMED ITS MASCOT THE COOLEST IN THE COUNTRY. THIS WAS IN BETWEEN STORIES ABOUT RAPE AND MISOGYNY IN SPORTS OF COURSE. I'M NOT SURE IF THOSE WOMEN KNEW IT WAS A TREE, OR IF IT'S SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF AS A STANFORD FAN, BUT I THINK IT MEANS A WIN AGAINST SNAP CRACKLE AND POP.

THURSDAY'S GAMES BRING US MIKE GUNDY LITERALLY UNFIREABLE ASS AND HIS BEDLAM SQUAD TO PLAY AGAINST TULSA IN WHAT IS SURE TO BE A DISPLAY OF BIG 12 SUPERIOR- AH WHO ARE WE KIDDING, THE GAME WILL END 75-72 WITH OKSTATE FEIGNING SURPRISE AT "HOW GOOD TULSA IS". FINALLY WE HAVE BLOWHIO STATE WHO IS SOMEHOW RANKED #2 IN THE COUNTRY *AGAIN* DESPITE GETTING MUCH WORSE AND DESPITE THE B1G'S AWFUL SHOWING IN BOWL GAMES LAST SEASON. THIS ISN'T THE WEEK TO LOOK FOR URBAN MEYERS FIRST LOSS, BUT EVEN IF IT WAS, SHITHIO SHIT FUCKEYES WOULD STILL RUN THE TABLE AGAINST CONFERENCE POWERHOUSES LIKE RUTGERS AND MARYLAND.

>scientific formulae and algorithms
The BCS computer polls were subject to human bias just as much as human voters. They were programmed by people who weighted different criteria with varying levels of importance...just like human poll voters do. If that wasn't true, every single computer would have the exact same results but they didn't because their creators had different priorities in determining who the top 25 teams were. Plus, the formulas weren't required to be public so we had no clue what they valued. It could have been whose cheerleaders have the biggest tits or which team has the most hoodrat nigs on their roster.

The bottom line is the computers put a team that just got slaughtered 35-7 by 10-3 Kansas State (who lost to Marshall that year) in the title game and the rest of the CFB world agreed it was such a huge mistake that the computers should have less influence. If they were superior, we would still use them instead of a committee.

>Week zero

It's a recent meme term. Technically they're considered part of Week 1, but the season's official kickoff is NEXT week, so they call this weekend "Week zero" informally to differentiate it.

It almost never has marquee matchups or 5 star talent. It's for the more dedicated/nerdy fans who follow some of the more low-key stories in CFB.

USF will likely thrash SJSU, Stanford will do the same to Rice, and BYU scheduled a mediocre FCS team in Week 0 for some godawful reason.

They played damn near 50 different people, and over 30 are returning, I'd say 6 wins is the floor and 10 is the max, lewerke looked like the real deal when he was in and a full offseason knowing he's the starter can only help, along with scott, holmes and london to hand off to.

Either Independence or Texas bowl. We will either go 8-4 or 6-6. Praying for a good season because we sure as shit are overdue for it with the talent that we have been pulling recently. Best case scenario we could reconstruct into a 10-2 team this year. They have an incredibly talented live band that comes in and plays every weekend, they are 10/10.

It's also a weekend where college football doesn't have to compete with the NFL (at least not REALLY, the preseason doesn't matter).

Therefore there is more potential viewership, advertising, revenue, et al.

Mayweather ruined boxing. Winning on points is NOT interesting to casual fans.

There hasn't been a good brawler since Tyson was at his prime. Tyson always put on an entertaining fight--one way or another.

Baylor firing Art Briles makes ZERO sense. I get it, I get it; they had a somewhat disappointing 2015 season. And that MSU loss in the Cotton Bowl probably still stings. But you can't deny the improvement that Briles has made for the program. A decade ago, if you told me that Baylor would be a perennial Big XII powerhouse, I would have laughed in your face. People forget just how bad Baylor was for so long. For the first time in the modern football era, Baylor is finally relevant. And they are throwing it all away.

This is Bo Pelini all over again.

I can see the mid major schools starting now. but for the other power conference teams the big pay is veterans day weekend
>>
Final predictions before the season starts. Quote me on all of this.

The CFB playoff will look like this:

1. Alabama
2. Wisconsin
3. Washington
4. Ohio State

Alabama is self-explanatory. They are the best team in college football and it's not even remotely close. They will be undefeated in the regular season yet again. I suspect that they'll win every single game by double digits and will never trail in the fourth quarter.

Washington is interesting; they will be incredibly overrated and will be carried by a meme victory over USC (who is also overrated). They are trash but will glide into the playoff due to being overhyped.

Wisconsin will be 12-0 (have you seen their schedule?) heading into the Big Ten championship game, where they will face an also 12-0 Ohio State team for all the marbles. Except not really -all- the marbles, because Ohio State will lose but still sneak into the playoff (solely due to brand name recognition). It will also help that the ACC and Big XII are trash - neither conference will have an 11+ win team and thus be essentially eliminated from the playoff discussion.

Onto the playoff matchups - Washington vs Wisconsin is a snoozer, ends up finishing something like 21 to 17 with one of the teams running away with it. It really doesn't matter, because Ohio State vs Alabama is the de-facto national championship. Whoever wins it goes on to EASILY win the national championship. I say that Saban gets his revenge on Meyer and destroys Ohio State, then goes on to easily stomp the winner of Wisconsin/Washington.

Overall this will be a pretty boring year, but I suspect the whole "two Big Ten teams in the playoff" thing will be interesting.

>Miami never should have knocked down the Orange bowl.

I went to some Miami games back in 2011-2012, and the atmosphere really wasn't too exciting. ECU puts on a much better show.

>I just cant see that happening. Veterans day is a big weekend where its seems like a nice start where everyone is off

It's not like they aren't having games then too. More games + less TV competition = more money.

I dont how I am going to treat this fight. I like mcgregor's attitude for the trolling purposes. but there is no way its going to be interesting unless he does some crazy shit like biting an ear off.

>>77814716
but it would make that weekend less special. Remember that mistake they went away with tradition two new years ago when they didnt have people tuning in for bowl games. College is more about tradition.
>>77814716
well you are not old enough to see miami game packed and rocking. Miami is not the greatest college football city but when its a big game that atmosphere is fun
>>
>>77814676
Love memorial stadium to pieces, but Berkeley weather is overall just a little too cold for me. The nice thing about the bay is how many microclimates there are, so you can live in a different temperature and precipitation range by moving less than 30 miles.

The views from the hills in Berkeley are some of my favorites in the world though.
>>
>>77814761
I dont mean just bay area. I like LA too. I dont like south florida, although its the california of the east coast. Its just too humid and stays this way from March-October even then we still have humid days outside of that time frame. you have to drive a long way to get out of it.
>>
>>77814741

>mcgregor

The memes and keks have already made this bout one of the best, and it hasn't even happened yet.

>Miami is not the greatest college football city but when its a big game that atmosphere is fun

Granted they were NOT "back" in '11-12, but it doesn't feel as special when a team shares an NFL stadium.

>>77814741

>but it would make that weekend less special. Remember that mistake they went away with tradition two new years ago when they didnt have people tuning in for bowl games. College is more about tradition.

The NCAA knows what they're doing. All the BIG games are Week 1, and the kickoff games have gotten a LOT better thanks to the playoffs and the strength of schedule consideration.

Week 0 could be a spotlight for up and coming programs and "BCS buster" mid-major prospects.
>>
>>77814741
basically when you go west you substitute seasons for changes in climate over a short distance
>>
>>77814845
Yeah NCAA has gotten better with the OOC games. Every team seems to be scheduling better games outside of the sec and urban meyer bitch ass.

but my point being.. is that the fight is going to be shit. I am only going to pay for it if my friends are going but it wont be more than 20 bucks
>>
>>77814840
Ah yeah, sorry about that, mang. I can't stand the humidity at all. Sounds disgusting to walk outside in the summer and instantly become drenched in sweat. Dry heat is where it's at.
>>
>>77814741
>well you are not old enough to see miami game packed and rocking.

Not a Miami fan in the slightest but this is my personal favorite game in the Orange Bowl.

https://youtu.be/Qc5erbhNYao
>>
>>77814845

As soon as a 2 loss team with a really tough schedule is left out of the playoffs in favor of a 1 loss team with a chickenshit schedule you will see big schools scheduling fewer big nonconference games.
>>
>>77814932

>BCS-era cupcake games again

The CFP promised that strength of schedule would be the primary factor in selection. Hopefully it'll never turn into the cancer that OOC game became in the late BCS era.
>>
Proposition:
8 team playoff. Champions of the power five conferences are in plus three wild cards based on rank. Long enough to make it more interesting, makes conference champs matter even if you have three losses, not long enough to moot the regular season like NFL and NBA.

To mix things up, three weekends per season, the top 16 must play each other in tournament style brackets. These are weekends where there are no games and effectively a bye week for those not in the top16 but do not see rank increases. This forces greater OOC play and a real chance for those possible wild cards to show their stuff and move up.
>>
>>77814962
Edit:
But not brackets as in a total tournament just what the matchups of a sweet 16 alone would be.
>>
>>77814962

5x P5 champs, top ranked G5, 2x at large is the superior format.

The tournament style brackets are dumb.

The conference slate is the meat and potatoes of college football, everything else is just fixin's. Don't break that up.
>>
>>77814978
I'll take that 12. Breddy gud. I don't want the playoff getting too big and unwieldy
>>
>colorado
>probably UW to open P12 play, CCG redemption in Boulder, or if we're actually 10+ wins again than USC in November in Boulder

So did Clemson, but everyone conveniently forgets this.

There will be blood week 2. Most of the Chryst talent is gone now, and a lot of their best returning players are suspended or got kicked off the team. Last Chance U star Kam Carter may not even be allowed at the stadium because he got banned from campus. He says on the show that it was for marijuana, but theres at least one, maybe 2 girls he beat up.

I hope JoeMo doesn't stop the Tuddie Train until the clock runs out.
